Going to Austin for my friend’s 21st birthday. Wanted to know if Terry Black’s is out of the question for a casual walk-in?

!!! I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO PLEASE DON’T JUMP TO CONCLUSIONS PLEASE !!!

Was wondering if Terry Black’s BBQ would be plausible for a mid-day walk in for some lunch. Never been, but I’ve heard people are RELIGIOUS about it. Don’t mind waiting like 15-20 minutes max.

If I were to go with the total 5 people in our group on the afternoon of Saturday February 8th, would we have a long wait time on our hands? By long we mean so long that we’d be better off going elsewhere.

If not, please share with me any recommendations for other nearly as good bbq restaurants in the greater Austin area that wouldn’t cost too much time where we could rather be celebrating.

23F Neighborhood Recs

Hi all,

I am debating a move to Austin in late fall. I currently live in Seattle and I’m ready for warmer weather, a culture change, and an extroverted city… all things I’m assuming I’ll find in Austin. I haven’t visited yet, but I’m planning a trip by the end of the month and staying in downtown. Hoping you all can provide neighborhood recommendations based on what I’m looking for and I’ll check those out while I’m there.

I am looking for a an apartment or room in a house located centrally in a charming neighborhood. I would like the surrounding area to be bike-able (flat) and walking distance to different things (grocery store, restaurant, etc.) I’d like easy-ish access to nightlife and bars. It’s important to me that I don’t live directly downtown, but I don’t want to be among solely families. I absolutely love swimming and nature so being near a swimmable portion of the lake would be cool. I am 23 y/o female. Where do young professionals live in Austin?

Logistics:

  • I work fully remote, so commute isn’t a factor whatsoever
  • I’m hoping to stay under $1500/mo on rent
  • I’ll have a car

I’ll be casting a wide net, looking in a lot of places until the right housing lines up, but what areas should I keep an eye out for? Appreciate any and all recs!

Where can I dump dirt mixed with sand?

I bought a house a few years ago and it came with an above ground pool, the pool eventually fell apart and underneath it was all sand. I tried to just let it go for a couple of years to see if stuff would grow over it or through it and it kinda did but I figure if I really want to grow anything there I will need to remove it all. Does anyone where where I would take all the sand/grass/dirt that will come out of that spot when I am done?

New to Austin – Best social spots/activities to meet people organically?

Hey! I am moving to Austin soon for work and am eager to explore the city while meeting like-minded people. I’m hoping to connect with others in person (not into apps) through shared interests—and hey, if it leads to dating someone awesome, even better!

My jam:

  • Aquariums/animal spots: Any cool aquariums, nature centers, or animal cafes where people hang out?
  • Hiking: Favorite easy-moderate trails or social hiking groups?
  • Live music: Dive bars or venues where people chat between sets (I’m all about the post-show convos).

Also into:

  • Coffee shops with community vibes
  • Casual sports leagues
  • Volunteering (animal shelters, parks cleanup, etc.)

Where do Austinites go to build friendships and maybe meet someone special? Open to all suggestions—thanks y’all! 🎸🌿

Where to get a "Makeover"

Are there any salons in Austin that will tell you, the client, what hair cut and color would compliment them + plus a similar makeup service? Does this exist anywhere?

Best Apartments in Austin to experience Austin

My wife and I are moving to austin soon with a baby on the way, what are some good apartment buildings/complexes that would put us in a walkable'ish area? We are keeping one car but I'd love to sell mine if it meant I'd be walking to more places. A back yard would be ideal but not required. We are big foodies too if that changes anything

State of Texas employees - has anyone heard rumbling about return to office?

Without getting political (please don’t - we’re all exhausted, pissed, and or weary at this point), I’ll just say that our state policies tent to mirror federal policies. And we all know the federal workers are being asked to return to office.

I’m just wondering if any state employees have heard anything gossip or fact. Just curious and seeing what’s out there.

Our agency hasn’t made any noise, and we have a significant work from home group and no space to put them.

Still, I can’t really shake the feeling that it’s coming.

Help picking safe affordable neighborhood

Hello ATX! My wife and I are moving to Austin this fall and will be working in South Austin. We are struggling to understand the safety rankings of these various south Austin neighborhoods despite visiting multiple times as the vibes flip drastically from one street to the next. Any of these regions you would recommend to avoid or pursue for a couple in mid 30s? Obviously Zilker is in the top but feels cost prohibitive. Thanks in advance !

Would anyone else like a sub for State of Texas employees?

I'd start one myself right now, but I don't think I'd make a good mod.

Also, I posted here first since I know there's a lot of us in this city. But is there a way to cross-post to r/Texas, or r/TexasPolitics?

Edit: PM me if you're willing to be a mod.

Edit 2: I'm also thinking it should have a pinned megathread for employment related questions. Because it would probably attract those kinds of posts.

Looking for apt recs for 1-2br under 3K around Zilker / South Lamar /Hyde park

Moving to Austin as a single 36F in March and looking for apartment recs close to Zilker Park / South Lamar / Hyde Park with lots of natural light. I work from home so location isn’t very important except I don’t want to be as far north as the domain Hoping to find a complex thats safe, more on the quiet side and close to a park so it’s easy to get outdoors. Budget ~3K/mo for a 1-2 br.

Thanks for your insights in advance!

South Austin/Sunset Valley/Oak Hill Gym Recommendations

Posted this on r/Austin already but just wanted more visibility and thoughts!

Hi,

I'm recently moved here to Austin and was looking for a new gym with my most important necessities being free weights with squat racks and benches (barbells, dumbells, etc). I also value a gym that isn't overly crowded, but it's something that's for sure not a super high priority. I'll only be here in 6 months, so I'll have to take into account things like annual fees and enrollment fees in addition to monthly cost, but I am willing to pay some premiums. Here is the gyms I am thinking about.

Gold's Gym Austin South - don't know anything about, looks like a bigger LA Fitness (never been to one)

Crunch South Austin - visited once during post-work rush, has all equipment I need but terribly busy but cheap membership

Southwest Family YMCA - Not too busy appears during post-work rush, but looks very small and okay membership price.

Lifetime - Terribly terribly expensive but I've had a membership at one and know how it is.

If anyone could give me any further thoughts and/or other recommondations it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Walkability to the Moody Center

Hi all, we'll be attending a show at the Moody Center Friday evening (1/31/25) and it's been years since we've been to the downtown area. How pedestrian friendly/safe/well-lit is it to walk to the Moody Center from about 16th and Lavaca? We're hoping to not use a ride share service if we don't have to considering how congested that area might get. We thought it might be doable since we're not crossing under the highway and since the weather will be much nicer than it's been this week. Thanks in advance!

ISO PCP/ medical practice that actually care for their patients.

I know it’s a tall order but I am really tired of having a sub par Dr. who doesn’t ask me anything beyond the basics or give me any personalized care. Sick of feeling rushed and treated like a number.

Looking for a new PCP and a practice that gives me the time of day.

Insurance is BCBS HMO Live in Southwest Austin, but will travel to another part of town for great care.

Been a while since I've been properly downtown. Where are the "good" parking spots if I'm going to a Thursday night Mohawk show?

I've parked on nearby streets in the past but it's been years since I've last gone.

I know a lot of development has been going on downtown so perhaps parking options have changed. Also, security is somewhat a concern (I know it's not Bull Creek or Mt Bonnell but figure it's worth mentioning).

Just checking here to hopefully avoid driving around aimlessly.

Sorry in advance for whatever someone will inevitably be annoyed by in this post!

Experience building with Scott Felder homes?

We are planning to build with Scott felder homes but wanted to see if any had experiences to share (quality, timeliness, price wise) as the few reviews online are not very helpful.

Bachelorette Night Out

I’m planning a bachelorette party for a group of women in their early 30s, and I’m looking for recommendations on fun places to party and dance. The bride loves hip-hop and pop music, so we’re hoping to find spots with great DJs or live music that play those genres. We’d love a lively vibe, good drinks, and somewhere where we can let loose and have an amazing time. I know 6th Street is a popular area for bachelorettes, but if you have any specific bars or venues there (or elsewhere) that you recommend, I’d love to hear about them. Bonus points if the venue has a mix of dancing and cool lounge areas! Thanks in advance!

Need help apartment hunting!

Hi Austin,

I’m planning to move to Austin soon and am currently exploring different neighborhoods. I’d love to get some insights and recommendations based on my preferences. Ideally, I’d like to live near the downtown area and have already done some research, narrowing my options down to the following two locations:

1.	Downtown Austin – Specifically, the area close to Rainey Street.
2.	East Austin – Around 6th and 11th Street, near I-35.

I’m particularly interested in understanding the safety of these areas and what it’s like to live in the heart of the city. Are these neighborhoods vibrant and convenient, or do they come with challenges I should be aware of? Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

What are some hidden gems in Austin that locals love?

I've been living here for a while, but I feel like I've missed out on some of the city's hidden gems

Looking for recommendations on cool spots, whether it's scenic overlook, a quirky little store or a park that's not super crowded, I'm trying to explore more of what Austin locals love that you might not find in the usual tourist guides

Local Trucker Jobs

Hey y’all I need some help or a point in the right direction. My boyfriend has his CDL license and has experience but has been having a hard time finding a decent job. He picked up a shitty sales gig because he hates not working but ideally would like a driving job. Does any one have any advice or suggestions on any decent jobs in austin for drivers, he ideally would like to stay local. Or even any good tips to land more interviews and call backs that would really be appreciated. I know it’s a hard economy for everyone, I appreciate anything. Blessings.

Employment Lawyer

Does anyone have an Employment Lawyer they can recommend and that won't cost everything I still have left?

I was fired in November without much reason, was approved for unemployment in December, but just received an appeal. I'd like to know what chance I have at winning the appeal, or if I should go ahead and take the loss because there's no way I can win against a huge company with lawyers.

Planning to move to Austin w family, which area is the best for my budget?

TLDR: Expecting job offer near Austin Airport.** ** Not interested in living in Austin. I'm mainly looking for neighborhoods outside Austin that meets the criteria below:

Hello!

I'll am expecting a job offer for a job near Austin Airport. I'm married with a kid(elementary school) and we have a dog. We're considering a 4br house, we currently live in VA and own 3br house. Single income family.

With that being said we are looking for <350k houses, expected total income is 110-120k a year.

My wife is very picky about schools so it must be 8/10 or greater rating, for the elementary school. According to my research so far,Round Rock comes as an option, they have multiple houses under 350k 4br, or 3br but large house. The only issue here will be the commute but I should be able to handle that.

Any other suggestions for nice, quiet, family friendly neighborhoods that relatively closer to Airport but still have houses within our budget? I see Buda, Hutto and Pflugerville in that budget as well.

I currently commute to work 45 minutes each way lol but use the highway no tolls and very little traffic, so I am somewhat used but trying to stay under 30 minutes commute.

** Update: Based on feedback I received so far, I'm going to start looking into Buda and Bastrop as priority options and then look at RR or Pflugerville.

** We won't be buying a house right away but I need to identify neighborhoods and do some calculations so I can negotiate salary based on that.

Once we are sure we're moving there we will work with a realtor, but still good to know what locals think!

Thanks in advance.

Can I find coconuts in any market here?

Hello, I’m not feeling well and I don’t have energy to be stopping in different stores. I’m craving fresh coconut water but not sure if there are any stores that sell coconuts?

In other cities I’ve lived in I’ve usually found them in the Asian stores but I haven’t been to any here so I’m not sure. If you’ve seen them around recently please let me know! I’d greatly appreciate it. And yes I’m aware there are coconut drinks but looking for something fresh. Your guidance will help me tremendously during this fatigue time right now.

New families of Austin, how much are y'all spending for groceries?

Have a new baby (yay!!) and was wondering how much is it normal to spend on groceries. Currently I spend around $900 per month on HEB ($225/week). I remember maybe a couple of years ago we would spend $150/week. Is this a normal inflation+baby increase?

Somewhat Affordable Hair Dye/Cut Recommendations?

Hi. I have very long hair that I haven’t done anything with in many years. I’m looking for someone good with cut and color that would cost less than like 350. Any recommendations? I’m in North Austin so around there would be ideal, but open to traveling for the right place!
