Bonus points if that place isn’t around anymore.
Anyone seen the tamales ladies today, the ones who sell out of the back of their car? I know there’s several spots in Austin they can be at.
Let me know if you’ve seen one today! The really wanting to go
Tis the season I guess. Just posted about Zoe Tong and then got this email about confituras closing their shop. At least they’ll still be around at farmers markets etc. Their brick and mortar always seemed unnecessary especially when they moved to only curbside pickup
I grew up in New Orleans but have been living in Austin for the past ~25 years. One of my favorite things about the holidays (and almost all other gatherings) growing up was the ubiquitous finger sandwiches. They are so simple: white bread with the crust cut off and some kind of filling like turkey, ham, or roast beef and then cut into quarters. But man did they taste amazing (and I could eat an embarrassing amount of them). My favorite was the egg salad and turkey but they are all tasty. Does anyone know if there’s any place in Austin that sells them? In New Orleans they were available at (just about) every grocery store, but I’ve asked everyone I could think of around here with no luck.
This might be a long shot and it's not Austin related. My family and I are headed out to the hill country to check out some Christmas lights. Does anyone have a dinner recommendation near Boerne?
Never had the chance to go :( will try and squeeze in a meal before the new year
Alright y'all, who has the BEST French toast in Austin? I desperately need some mf French toast in my life. Help a girl out!
This might be a long shot, but are there any grocery stores around Austin that sell this heavenly Polish holiday treat, also known as “angel wings”? Feeling homesick for the ones we’d have back home in western New York.
New to town and looking to try out some new spots. All recommendations are appreciated!
Where and when?
Looking for spring rolls with bubbly rice paper wrappers like in the photo, or Chinese egg rolls with bubbly wheat wrappers.
Posted this in the regular Austin subreddit, and apparently that was a mistake 🤷🏼♂️
So the basic question is, I meet my dad on Sundays in south Austin, we normally meet at Chilis cause he’s a simple man. He likes burgers and Italian, TexMex (we used to meet at El Patio a lot)
I’d just prefer to try some new places, no disrespect to Chilis.
Where can I find tamale addiction? I know they sell them at farmers markets on weekends and I’ve had them at Epoch coffee on Anderson Lane. Where else can I find them?
I’m a fan of the atmosphere, apps, and drinks at Aba. Looking forward to seeing what they do here!
I was out of town and did my usual order of eggs over medium which I know is annoying. They nailed it. When you get those perfect jelly yokes though, it's magical. I got lucky once at the Waffle House on 290, and Counter Cafe was close. Have tried to order them at Jims (183/burnet), Cafe Java, Omlettery, Austin Diner.
Inspired by the other thread looking for quietest restaurants—let's call out the ones where a conversation is impossible. Comment on the top level with a restaurant that is infuriatingly loud, upvote the ones you agree with.
Rip relleno burrito
Is there a local spot that I can buy syrup /concentrate from? I could order off of Amazon, but would rather avoid that. I've recently gotten into home drink preparation. I'm enjoying making my own extracts and syrups, but my kids are not as enthused. I'm getting a lot of "it's just not Sprite". I'd prefer to leverage the carbonator I have and be able to play with the syrup ratio, so I'm really looking for just the syrup, not a machine. Ideally I could find a few flavor options. Does anyone know of a place I can buy this kind of stuff that does not need a restaurant license and that isn't the little Sodastream bottles you see at HEB?
I host for Christmas and love to have local snacks/treats available to family as we are lounging around the holidays. What are you fave “order ahead” to pick up before the holiday.
I’ll start:
-Antonelli’s cheese/charcuterie board
-Perini Ranch beef tenderloin, always order this for 12/24 delivery. No prep necessary. Serve for Christmas dinner.
What are your favorite places/traditions to order from and support local?
Any suggestions for a soup like that in the Cedar Patk/NW Austin area (can't drive right now so must be deliverable)? I really want one that's more like a casserole than a soup and the only one I can think of is Chili's but I like it a lot less. 😅
Anyone notice how loud restaurants have gotten? I find myself unable to enjoy my meal because I’m having to yell to communicate. Any area of Austin.
Hoping to get a list going of restaurants that are on the quieter side. TIA :)
it's so hard to find traditional burritos that have both rice and refried beans, anyone had any luck?????
***EDIT****
Thanks for the suggestions but looking for something more traditional!!
Hi! In the wake of numerous news of private equity firms owning everything in sight, I feel compelled to support small businesses to help balance things out a bit; just a bit haha.
What are some restaurants (or even coffee shops or businesses) where the owner or owners work at the shop/restaurant or are at least seen regularly there? AND Hopefully these restaurants haven’t been sold to private equity and through some deal have the previous owner temporarily manage the restaurant as the steering wheel is successfully passed on to the next owners.
One that comes to mind is Casper Fermentables. And oh my. They are really great. The food and vibe are on point in my view. Everyone is very friendly too.
is there a sit down restaurant that offers birria tacos? i know many food trucks offer it but im looking for a place we can sit down and eat
Color me...disappointed? I am guessing The Switch has a more limited menu than Stiles Switch? Is it the same? Don't know for sure.
The $14.50 St. Louis Pork Ribs were meaty but tiny. There was maybe 1 full bite each.
The non-meat eater in the group had the highly spiced and salted $19.50 Fried Catfish plate which was basically inedible. Accompanying 2 hush puppies were burnt black and there was a grand total of 12 "homemade french fries" on the plate.
The $16.00 Switch Chopped Salad was okay. Nothing wonderful but nothing bad. It was fine for what it was.
The $16.50 Prime Brisket was half dry and half moist. The moist was good but the dry was very, very dry. The spice rub was very present in the taste of the meat. It came with the usual bread and onions.
The restaurant itself seemed small but there was a large smoker area attached to the side so you could look in to check out work in progress. We don't drink but the menu back had a full selection of beer and margueritas. All in all, I doubt my group would go back.
I'm planning a high-end corporate dinner for approx. 20 people and I'm curious about the best private dining rooms in the downtown area. I've never been to Austin and I'm hoping to wow guests with a wonderful experience. Please help!
Edit: La Condesa (Flour House) is one I have my eye on—has anyone been to an event there? How was it? My fear is that it will feel claustrophobic.
Thoughts from last year? It's like ACL prices, but for just 1 day? How was the food and music?
