MITA is raising capital through a public bond offer

https://thesmbx.com/app/auction/MITA

MITA is raising money and letting the public participate in supporting them and likewise earning a return directly. The terms are 11.25% a year for 3 years repaid monthly, with a minimum investment of $10.

This is a win-win as both them and individual investors get a better interest rates than banks would provide either. These bonds are unsecured though, so you may lose all or some of your investment if they default.

This is through SMBX who I've used to invest in two other vegan businesses including DC's Sticky Fingers, and I've been happy with both experiences.

I'm happy to answer any questions about the general SMBX platform if folks are interested. I'm unsure if I'll invest yet.

Takoma Park Co-Op Reopens 2024 November 06

The Takoma Park Co-Op is a food collective in Takoma Park Maryland. All of the workers and all of the members are considered to be owners. It is a huge resource for local vegans with a large variety of vegan foods, vegan specialty foods, extensive bulk bins, organic produce, and more.

It has been closed down all summer while the ancient and worn out insides have been remodeled.

Cielo Rojo: great vegan menu with some irony

Went to Cielo Rojo in takoma Park tonight for the first time and delighted to see they had a Vegan menu and the food was great. Highly recommend it.

But it's also so ironic that all their menus come in leather binders. ah well.

fwiw there is a gas station across the road that turned its pumps into EV chargers too!

Maryland Renaissance Festival Food

FYI for anyone going to the Ren Faire.

  1. You can bring in outside food, drinks are limited to 1 sealed water bottle.

"Can I bring drinks or food into the Festival?" in the FAQ

"We do allow food through the gates, but the festival does not permit coolers or other receptacles for carrying food/drinks."

  1. there are some but very limited likely vegan options.

I strongly suggest bringing your own food if food is an important need.

Otherwise the options are spread around and from memory consist of

  1. Various potato stuff, baked, fries, sweet potato fries , "twist" basically ribbon chips
  2. Fried Mushrooms
  3. Fried Thai green beans
  4. Fried Pickle
  5. Dairy free crepe ( no idea about egg)
  6. Falafel Sandwhich
  7. Vegetarian Rice Bowl (hopefull vegan)
  8. Fruit stand
  9. Sweet nuts
  10. Pretzels (butter?)

As with all fast food though you're going to have cross contamination with meats and oil, and who knows what is in their batter for things, though in the past I seem to recall they have that information if you ask.

Shouk Georgetown is closed permanently

Was sad to see that it's gone in Georgetown.

Doubly sad cause we had planned on getting a snack there, and then we also discovered our backup Bakeshop now closed at 2 as well it is no longer all vegan :(

Tyra Bank's Smize ice cream is a skip

Tyra Banks has an ice cream pop up in Woodly for a month or two.

While the website lists 2 vegan flavors this one only has the Chocolate Cookie & Cream.

It's decent, actually creamy, but a little pricy too for the size, so I wouldn't go out of my way for it and preferably go to Van Leeuwen in Adams Morgan if you can

https://www.smize.com/our-flavor note this only shows you flavors on mobile.

Reopened

Reddit closes subreddits when they aren't very active.

I'm doing my part, I made this thread. :-)

What is your favorite vegan place to eat these days?

I've been going to Seneb in Takoma/DC again.

FYI new mod

Hey yall! I'm the new mod because the previous one seems to have been banned from Reddit.

This isn't the most active group, but if there are any automated things that have been hindering your use of it please let me know.

I'm very interested in promoting veganism through local community and support of businesses and initiatives in the DMV area.

PSA on HappyCow - use and contribute more please

HappyCow is not in the best financial state unfortunately. It's been around for 20 years, but a couple years ago they seemingly had to be acquired to stay around and as part of that their budget was reduced, though at least they still exist.

Eric doesn't give a lot of suggestions in the post below, but I think the more we use HC, contribute reviews, and update it (anyone can suggest updates) the better off it will be.

Also they have a store if you weren't aware and get a referal bonus if you buy through their links

I really appreciate Eric's (founder) candor and transparency:

Kid-friendly vegan restaurants?

Good morning! Looking for some kid-friendly vegan restaurants in the DMV area. Two most promising places I found with a search seem to have shut down (Sticky Fingers and Todd Gray’s Muse Sunday brunch).

Would appreciate suggestions!

FYI and warning: WiseGuy pizza opens in DuPont with Vegan slices!

Love WiseGuy for having vegan slices, it's the only* option in the area and now there's one in DuPont

https://www.wiseguypizza.com/locations

However be careful with the new DuPont location until they settle in.

I went in this weekend and

  1. They didn't have the vegan pie as they were waiting for the crumbles to defrost
  2. They seem to have had a lot of the vegetarian pizzas marked as vegan. I pointed it out and they removed the labels at least.

* We the Pizza technically has a vegan slice, but it's super deep, no cheese and lots of veggies/pesto. Good but not really pizza.

Here's a list I keep for hard to find things like this

Has DC Vegan food changed yet since they hired the Fancy Radish executive Chef?

When Fancy Radish closed last year, DC Vegan hired their executive chef. Does anyone know if they've made their mark so to speak on the food yet?

https://www.popville.com/2023/12/dc-vegan-executive-chef-fancy-radish-david-aaron-gravenmier/

I haven't really eaten there in several months, somewhat because I've found the food to be very much on the spectrum of "OK to bad". In particular I remember a creamy pasta that was just too much cream and with a way too tangy taste...

Has the quality gotten better yet?

---
I do love their cheese offerings and sweets, as well I visited the Botanical Bar recently and the drinks and appetizers were good.
