    Cox Farms (Any Different?)

My family and I have been going to Cox Farms for the past five years since we moved to the NCR. However, it’s been the same exhibits and rides every year. Does anyone know if anything is different this year?

    ISO: Sirloin tips

I looked here and didn’t find anything. Haven’t looked at the local grocery stores. Just found a recipe that suggests them that I’d like to make. I usually shop at Giant, Lidl and sometimes Harris Teeter. Are sirloin tips easy to find locally? I know stew meat is an easy alternative. Thanks!!

    Decision Paralysis: Bún bò Huế

All, I could really use your help in deciding on a spot to have Bún bò Huế at Eden Center. I am visiting, otherwise I would legit try bbh from every establishment that came up on my search for “Bún bò Huế” in Eden Center — results came back with 22 spots (a bit overwhelming).

Bún bò Huế was my favorite noodle soup dish growing up. My father’s family is from Hue so I was spoiled at home. My preference is a bbh dish must have huyết and gio heo (the city I come from, most Vietnamese places have stopped using gio heo). Would be great if there’s an option to request for sate and mam ruoc. For garnishing, huge plus if they have banana blossom.

I really appreciate your recommendation. Thank you!!

    LF Recommendations: Auto Graphics Shop

Ended up getting a hood scoop vinyl cover from Etsy for my 4Runner and I'm probably not good enough with that type of thing to do it myself without botching the job (hint: I already botched 1). Does anyone in the NoVA area have any recommendations of a shop or person that can do it for me? Don't want to trash another one... TIA!

NJ transplant looking for good pizza and bagels locally

I grew up around Jews and Italians my entire life and I’ve been spoiled with good bread (bagels, pizza, etc.). It’s been a bit of a food culture shock moving away from all that. Yes I adore the nice roads here, ample parking, wineries/breweries, etc. but that’s one thing I really miss that I can’t seem to find here. Is there any place in NOVA (not DC or Maryland) where I can find decent pizza and breakfast sandwiches? I’m in the Louden area and don’t really feel like commuting to Alexandria every time I want to eat a decent Detroit style pizza or Bacon Egg and Cheese on a bagel.

Side note 1: Sicilian isn’t Detroit style. What I’m looking for is something like Emmy Squared or Stracci.

Side note 2: Hot dog recommendations are also welcome. Something like Haute Dogs but not a 45 min drive in traffic away.

Any nova people going fishing this weekend? Where?

Hey everyone, I’m going fishing today and from hurricane Helene’s aftermath, I’m not sure where is best to be going fishing. Thinking of starting at Burke Lake Park before any rivers, but where do you normally go to fish? Any suggestions or advice is always appreciated. Thanks!

    I think I’ve had enough

I know we talk about how bad MD drivers be but today just really hit the limit. How do you cut me off then stick your long ass middle finger at me? Extremely dangerous cutting someone off in a lane that’s only turning left. Insane actually. That’s wild work and we’re in Arlington . Take that back to MD 😭

I rode the VRE for the first time.

The gallery cars are weird, man. Theyre super claustrophobic. The single platform stations are an... Interesting idea. This system has so much potential, I hope it can improve.

    Photography Groups?

I just picked up a new camera a few weeks ago after not shooting in years and have been wondering if there are any photography groups in the area? While I would prefer the Reston and surrounding area I wouldn’t mind driving down to the Arlington area sometimes if there are any groups down there.

Need to ship a rocking chair to Denver but it’s too large for parcel service - any recommendations?

My dad passed and left my sister a rocking chair that I’d like to ship to her out in Denver. It’s literally a few inches too big to a ship via Fedaex or UPs parcel service. It can’t be disassembled to be packaged in a smaller box.

But I’m a little overwhelmed at the FedEx and UPS freight service estimates. They’re coming in at like $1000!

Any advice for companies or alternatives to getting this chair out to Denver? This is totally new to me, the idea of freight shipping and it’s … confusing.

    Freddie’s Beach Bar Parking?

I am DD’ing for a group of friends tonight and was wondering if anyone has parking tips for the area? Should I even be concerned about this?

Fwiw, I am familiar with the general area as I work off Crystal Dr. but I really would like to avoid crossing Route 1.

Apple Cider Donuts: Cox Farms vs. Apple House Science Smackdown!

Someone recently asked where to get the best apple cider donuts. Apple House was an early contender, and I mentioned my local favorite, Cox Farms. Opinions varied, but we all agreed that SCIENCE would provide the real answer! And my friends: science has delivered.

You can argue I should have rotated the \"B\" donuts better for the photo, but that's just how they naturally positioned themselves. Science!

A double-blind taste test, administered to family visiting from out of town, accompanied by cold apple cider from each place.

    THE FIRST, SHOCKING DISCOVERY:

    Betrayal by cider?

My wife and I each brought home donuts and cider from one of the places. Looks like the real winner is Rinker Farms, who provides identical cider to both. As a side note, we all agreed it is much better -- thicker and flavorier -- than Wegmans' cider. But I'm not sure we really needed two gallons of it. (Not complaining!)

    BACK TO THE DONUTS

Identical plastic packaging. Cox Farms puts a sticker on theirs. Same size, about the same price. (To my shame, I did not write down the prices of either. What kind of a scientist am I?!?) (One who does not quibble over the price of my apple cider donuts. Every donut is magical and worth it.)

    APPLE HOUSE DONUT:

    https://preview.redd.it/pt3bg5nmvxsd1.jpg?width=2252&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5293b9f6069489b0480363403e7052c4a0dd95d9

    COX FARMS DONUT:

    https://preview.redd.it/nrvud6nmvxsd1.jpg?width=2252&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cf6f2d36fe40a2bddda3ad3197ef612276410195

The Apple House donuts clearly have more topping. Otherwise, they are the same size and weight and color on the outside.

Once you cut them open, the Apple House donuts have a much richer, caramel color (dare I say "apple cider color?").

The Apple House donuts have more intrinsic flavor in the bread, and the extra coating of topping is definitely effective at conveying extra flavor at the first instant of biting in.

The Cox Farms donuts are a bit denser? I dunno. I'm not a food critic, so I am not going to try and write about toothiness or a heady, nutmeg aroma or anything.

    WHO WAS THE WINNER?

    https://preview.redd.it/6b0vurudwxsd1.jpg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1ddcf4da03a795dd88fea2580d38397e03292040

That's the result of 6 children and 3 adults taste-testing and voting. (Science AND politics!) That's also the result of the vote form being set in the condensation from one of the cider jugs.

But the results are unanimous: Apple House apple cider donuts are the best!

Are they worth the extra half-hour drive each way?

In the words of one participant: "As long as you are the one doing the drive, Dad, then yes."

Happy apple cider donut season, everybody!

Religious people ringing my doorbell every Saturday

Have any of you been having this problem lately? For the past 2 months I’ve had people ringing my doorbell to talk about religion. This is getting extremely annoying.

I never open the door but I talk to them through my doorbell and I tell them that I am not interested. They seem to be targeting me for some reason because they are always talking to us in Spanish (Spanish is my native language) and they seem to come to my house and then leave, they don’t go to the neighbors. Some neighbors have mentioned they have had religious people soliciting but none of them are Spanish speakers.

Where are they getting this info? I really would like them to stop… I don’t want anything to do with any religion.

Edit: if they come today I plan on asking them where they are getting my info from.
