    Plumbing and permits

We had a huge plumbing issue with our basement bathroom. The bathroom was added on by the previous owner.Thankful it was caught in time before any major flooding happened. When the plumbers came out they found a whole other issue including how the plumbing in that particular bathroom is totally not to code/illegal including sewage not being connected to sewer drain and can't be used. We recently bought this home and had a " thorough" inspection. I'm assuming they didn't pull permits since this would have never been approved. It's a huge repair job $$,$$$. What options do I? I'd like to find the contractor who did this work but not sure where to start or even if that's the right approach šŸ¤”.

Detailed explanation of the Bond questions on Nov 5 Ballot

Wanted to know more specifics of what exactly I was voting for, because the bond questions on ballot are pretty vague.

Fairfax County website has a pretty great PDF that goes into details of exactly what bonds will fund, if approved: https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/bond/bond-explanations

There's a FAQ section about topics like how bonds work, why they're used, and what effects they have on property tax

And Pros and Cons list of arguments for and against the use of bonds to fund public services.

Should've been included with the ballot imo.

    Damn Kids

I was running on the W&OD trail today over by Herndon. I've been trying to get back into the habit and decided to extend my range by a mile for a total of four. I just hit the two mile mark and turned around. After walking for about a minute I get hit from the back by a bike. I get knocked down scraping my hand up. I look down and there's a large gash on my lower left leg that's bleeding a bit. The kid that his me looked to be 14 or 15, starts apologizing. Then he sets me off "I'm sorry, I was on my phone." I looked down and the phone was still in his hand. At that point I lost it and totally chewed him out. I must have been screaming at him for 2-3 minutes straight before I just turned around and walked away. He had a friend there about the same age trying to explain that they were trying to find a friend's house. I screamed at him that I didn't care about his intentions or his apology.

I walked about a half mile then called an Uber to get back home. I haven't gone to the emergency room yet. I dumped a bunch of isopropyl alcohol on it and used some alcohol wipes. It still stings a bit and it's going to bruise up. I'm wondering if there's any other way I should have handled it. I don't know. I know this could have potentially been a liability issue but would it have been worth it? I don't like frivolous lawsuits. I thought about calling the police, not to arrest him. I wish his parents would take away his damn phone until at least the start of next year.

    Meteor in Dulles?

Driving on the highway in Dulles and saw a bright green flash with a streak heading towards the ground. Thought the Nuke finally came but assuming itā€™s a meteor?

Anyone else see it around 9:20 pm?

Is there a penalty for crossing the double lines on 66?

I was in the Express lanes while traffic in the regular lanes was stopped and in two separate incidents, a pickup truck crossed the double lines and over the flimsy poles to get into the express lanes. One of them almost caused an accident because the car in that lane had to swerve into the other lane to avoid them.

Iā€™m just wondering if thereā€™s any penalty for doing this, since presumably the camera would pick up that you exited the lane but never entered it. Doesnā€™t really matter but would give me a bit of satisfaction to know if theyā€™re going to get a big fine in the mail.

    Easterns Automotive dealerships?

I'm looking at a car that is being sold by Easterns and I've noticed that it (and, from looking, the ~30-40 other cars they have of that specific make and model) has sat for over 3 months with no price adjustments or anything, and I've since found some better deals at competing dealerships. Has anyone bought from here before, are they flexible on price (i.e. do they negotiate price - I've seen mixed thoughts on reviews)?

I'm looking to pay cash, no financing BS.

    Thank you!

Career changer pre-med shadowing/clinical opportunities in NoVa

I am a working professional a couple years out of undergrad working a full-time 9-5 job. I am considering a career change into medicine and I am seeking opportunities to get some physician shadowing and clinical experiences.

How straightforward is it to get these experiences here in NoVa as a full-time working professional who can only dedicate time to these things outside of core work hours? I know there are a couple of universities nearby with medical schools (Georgetown, GWU, etc.).

    Making friends in rural Loudoun

My husband and I moved to a rural part of western Loudoun county from DC to be in nature and have a bit of land for outdoor hobbies.

While weā€™ve made great relationships with older neighbors, we have found it difficult to find a younger community here. Weā€™re early 30s, no kids yet and enjoy backpacking, mountain biking, trying new breweries/wineries etc. Wondering how younger people are making friends out here in more rural areas?

Just so you knowā€¦a single slice of pizza at Kings Dominion costs $18

I just thought that was so absurd I needed to share. I went there this weekend and my group got hungry. I stopped in the pizza parlor expecting to overpay but FFS. I was shocked. We just had to laugh.

$18 a slice!!?! That would be $144 for an entire pizza. The kicker is that it looked like some $5 frozen gas station pizza. šŸ•

Can you get a ticket if you run a red light but see no flash? No camera?

My friend decided to speed up (in my car) when the light changed from yellow to red. And yes, I yelled him for having the nerve to do that since it's my car (we're taking turns behind the wheel on this long trip).

I didn't see a light flash. Can't tell if there was a camera or not since it was night time. But recently these cameras around NOVA/DC have been improved their technology. And sometimes they send you tickets you don't even recall. Is there a possibility there was a camera but didn't flash?

    Possible insurance fraud attempt

I say possible cause I have no idea but definitely a weird situation. I was sitting at a stop light in Tysonā€™s and I donā€™t normally let my dogs sit in my lap when I drive but we were one street away from home and let them move to sit on my lap to see out the open window.

I was minding my business with tons of space between me and the car in front of me and all the sudden I hear someone from the car next to me yell ā€œHonk! honk!ā€ And I look up and see the car in front of me rolling back. So I honk but they keep rolling back. Iā€™m not big on using my horn or road rage lol but they still are getting closer so I kept honking till they stopped because they were just about to hit me. They moved so far from where they were at the line at the light so idk how they didnā€™t notice they were rolling back or if it was an insurance scam.

I wasnā€™t sure if their car was having an issue or what but it was weird they kept rolling back even when I was honking. Shoutout to the car next to me for telling me to Honk šŸ«¶šŸ½ and shoutout to the universe for having my window open so I could hear them.

Either way Iā€™m about to buy a dash cam today.

Advice Needed: Where to rent in NoVA as a 30s couple moving for a job in Tysons, VA?

Hey NoVA! Been lurking on this sub recently and thought it was time to post. My spouse and I are relocating to the area soon (~2 months) for work in Tysons and would love some advice on where to live as we settle in. Weā€™re early 30s, no kids yet (but planning to), and both work white-collar jobs. Weā€™ve previously lived in Boston and Miami, so weā€™re familiar with both city life and quieter suburbs.

    1. What can we expect for NoVA lifestyle (or DC) compared to New England?

Since weā€™re new to Northern VA, weā€™re thinking of renting close to Tysons for 6-12 months, so we can get a feel for the area and decide if we want to eventually buy here. We are over the going out to a bar/club lifestyle and now value a quiet and safe environment, enjoy eating out, and tend to be introverted but like to meet like-minded, college-educated professionals. Looking to start a family soon as well.

    1. Is Tysons a nice area to rent for the convenience? Or is it significantly cheaper somewhere else that is commutable by train? Any cities/towns to avoid? Whether it is now or down the line? I hear that the DC area can be sketchy

Weā€™d ideally like a 2+ bedroom place, and Iā€™m assuming apartments are our best betā€”any recommendations on specific apartment buildings? Budget ~$3-4k/mo. Anything to avoid? Weā€™d appreciate any insights on neighborhoods and complexes, especially ones with a nice balance of quiet and convenience. Thanks!

Y'all were kind enough to offer your puppers as models when y'all learned i was trying to learn how to take photos - never caught your names but if y'all are on here, here's the pics and thank you to you both for your kindness!

Best place to sell a used car in NoVa?

Looking to sell a used car relatively hassle-free. There doesnā€™t seem to be a lot of used car dealerships in the area though.

Is the best way around here just to sell it to an actual dealership or Carmax?

Where to stay between DC and Richmond?

Iā€™ll be flying into DC around 9 pm, and need to be in Richmond the next day by late afternoon. Iā€™ll be renting a car at the airport, and Iā€™m looking for somewhere to stay in between DC and Richmond for that night. Basically, somewhere cool to walk around a bit and have lunch the next day. (Iā€™ve already spent time in DC so would rather somewhere new.)

Iā€™m fine with a 30m - 1h detour off that route to get to somewhere cool.

Any suggestions? (And if there is a more appropriate sub for me to ask this in, please let me know. Thank you!

ETA: Flying into IAD. Mainly just want to explore somewhere new, and I have no reason to be in Richmond before I can check into my hotel the next day. Iā€™ll be meeting up with friends there for a wedding, so Iā€™ll have some time to explore Richmond with them.

Update: Looked at my hotel reservation and realized I booked my hotel in Richmond for 3 nights instead of 2. šŸ˜† So, Iā€™ll be going to Richmond directly! Appreciate all the recommendations and tips, Iā€™m going to plan on checking out Fredericksburg on my way back to DC!
