I’ve been playing melee for years now on and off and I will go through phases where I grind for like weeks straight and no matter how much techskill I practice I can never do well in an actual game because I have a complete inability to focus on the actual match.

I’m always having imaginary conversations and daydreaming while playing. I’ll go into a match and tell myself I am going to focus on what my opponent is doing etc etc and within fifteen seconds i’m blanked out and just running in endlessly and basically playing on autopilot (my autopilot isn’t very good). I want to be good at this game but it feels impossible. There’s just too many things that require active concentration.

I’m addicted to this game and it sucks that I have absolutely nothing to show for it. I hop on unranked and get my ass kicked by someone who’s beating me in neutral over and over and I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong because I have zero gamesense at all. I watch pro’s or even the people who are good in my local scene play and it feels impossible, my brain can’t even comprehend how they can move or think so fast.

All I do in my spare time is play videogames and somehow I still suck at all of them. I’ve grinded so many different competitive games like league csgo melee overwatch etc and never once made it past silver/gold in any of them. Am I just stupid? I have really bad ADHD and stimulents don’t help me focus in game they just make me sweaty and cold and my hands shake.

I know this is a stupid vent post about an old videogame but I feel genuinely hurt right now.

These days, joining a local Discord community is the best way to find local events and people to play with. Once you have a Discord account, Google "[your city/state/province/region] + Melee discord" or see if your region has a Discord group listed here on melee.tv/discord

It can seem daunting at first to join a Discord group you don't know, but this is currently the easiest and most accessible way to find out about tournaments, fests, and netplay matchmaking. Your local scene will be happy to have you :)

Netplay is hard! Is there a place for me to find new players?

Yes. Melee Newbie Netplay is a discord server specifically for new players. It also has tournaments based on how long you've been playing, free coaching, and other stuff. If you're a bit more experienced but still want a discord server for players around your level, we recommend the Melee Online discord.

How can I set up Unclepunch's Training Mode?

First download it here. Then extract everything in the folder and follow the instructions in the README file. You'll need to bring a valid Melee ISO (NTSC 1.02)

How does one learn Melee?

There are tons of resources out there, so it can be overwhelming to start. First check out the SSBM Tutorials youtube channel. Then go to the Melee Library and search for whatever you're interested in.

But how do I get GOOD at Melee?

I just switched to Linux Mint for Data Science, but I am still incredibly noob to the whole Linux thing.
I have a Mayflash Adapter and I cannot get it running. Anything I can find on the internet has not been useful so I am asking the brainful community for help.

The Adapter is not recognized as input. Btw, do I need the "Wii-U" or "PC" mode for Linux? I know it has to be Wii U for Windows.

I've been stuck in a plateau for years now. Looking for some inspiration.

On your grind was there ever a moment that something clicked for you and created a marked improvement in your game?

I'm excited to share a long-form combo video that's not a traditional combo video in the sense that it's not full of flashy movement and unorthodox move choice. This combo video is meant to show practical combo extensions and effective DI mixups that I try to use in all my games. Some combos may seem like the opponent is using bad DI, but really they're just getting mixed up.

If you pay close attention, you'll notice very similar situations repeat themselves, but whether I choose to read DI in or DI away is made ambiguous until the last moment. For example, you'll see a lot of people choose to DI away then lose their stock instantly to run>crouch>fsmash which might seem like a bad decision on their part. Remember that they've been conditioned to DI away by previous combos that were reading DI in.

If you can train yourself to combo in a way that forces your opponent to make a decision with their DI that may lose their stock, then your punish game will improve drastically.

For the last 3 years, my friends and I convene weekly on Tuesdays to watch every combo video released in the previous week. For the last year, we've begun tracking the videos in a spreadsheet. Two people in the DDT requested that I post a weekly wrap-up to stimulate more combo video discussion in this subreddit.

#Combo Video Tuesday, Week of 10/29

Short week because The Finest Ship by NightGhost1400 took up so much of our time. Interesting video but I always prefer short and sweet. Any combo video over 5 minutes REALLY needs to justify itself through some amazing engaging gameplay and this video doesn't hit that mark. Enormous demerits for the song during the Captain Falcon section.

If Melee Is Eternal , why is Justus showing us the same clips we've seen a million times before? Cool editing though, I enjoyed the combination of music and visuals and the combos are excellent of course. One of the best videos of the month.

HeavenAllAroundMe by Bobby Big Ballz (Falco) was just ok by his standards imo. Hate the piss yellow laser mod and didn't feel the Saba song added much energy to the clips.
