Welcome to the Daily Discussion Thread. This is the place for asking noob questions, venting about netplay falcos, shitposting, self-promotion, and everything else that doesn't belong on the front page.
If you're completely new to Melee and just looking to get started, welcome! We recommend you go to https://melee.tv/ and follow the links there based on what you're trying to set up. Additionally, here are a few answers to common questions:
Can I play Melee online?
Yes! Slippi is a branch of the Dolphin emulator that will allow you to play online, either with your friends or with matchmaking. Go to https://slippi.gg to get it.
I'm having issues with Slippi!
Go to the The Slippi Discord to get help troubleshooting. melee.tv/optimize is also a helpful resource for troubleshooting.
How do I find tournaments near me or local people to play with in person or online?
These days, joining a local Discord community is the best way to find local events and people to play with. Once you have a Discord account, Google "[your city/state/province/region] + Melee discord" or see if your region has a Discord group listed here on melee.tv/discord
It can seem daunting at first to join a Discord group you don't know, but this is currently the easiest and most accessible way to find out about tournaments, fests, and netplay matchmaking. Your local scene will be happy to have you :)
Netplay is hard! Is there a place for me to find new players?
Yes. Melee Newbie Netplay is a discord server specifically for new players. It also has tournaments based on how long you've been playing, free coaching, and other stuff. If you're a bit more experienced but still want a discord server for players around your level, we recommend the Melee Online discord.
How can I set up Unclepunch's Training Mode?
First download it here. Then extract everything in the folder and follow the instructions in the README file. You'll need to bring a valid Melee ISO (NTSC 1.02)
How does one learn Melee?
There are tons of resources out there, so it can be overwhelming to start. First check out the SSBM Tutorials youtube channel. Then go to the Melee Library and search for whatever you're interested in.
But how do I get GOOD at Melee?

Hi fellas, bit of context. Ive been planning a bit of a campaign to introduce new players to melee, as a bit of a personal project of mine in my college. One of the main problems i noticed while introducing it to some friends, is the neccesity of gamecube controller when arriving at local events, like tournaments. Prices for gc controllers are rising every day, and to buy a controller that, at least here, is not exactly that cheap to use in 1 niche game is not exactly ideal. (Plus more money in an adapter for slippi that if is not from a good manufacturer can break your controller)
Of course, these issues are solved when playing slippi, which has remapable controls, but then another issue arises: How will these players adapt to in person events, using a GC controller which by my own experience, they have found weird and not comfortable (shocking, i know :o)
Here is where the 8bitdo receiver enters.
This, in theory, should allow more people to enter the game in our local tournaments and should solve the accesibility issue on one end.
My main question is with the latency. The manufacturer claims there is no added latency despite the wireless only nature of their product which i had my severe doubts on, for very fair reasons.
Doing my research for this product i sumbled upon THIS video, which was the only lag test with video i could find.
https://youtu.be/jW3tPsVRbxU?si=IlCRUQE4Fbk8CCqU
Appereantly, in this test it is true that there is no added latency. But i find this sketchy and maybe not proper due to the use of what i assume is a wii u with nintendont with a wii u adapter that may or may not be overclocked.
Ive seen melee players claim that there is lag but i could not find any source with a video rather than all over the place claims.
Do yall have experience with the receiver? Or have any alternatives to this problem? Id love to read yall!
We know they have solid fundamentals from being pros in another Smash game so what do you think their Slippi rank would be? I’d guess they’re at least Platinum 1, maybe even Diamond or Master for someone like Kola. I’m mainly talking about players like Tweek, MkLeo, Sparg0, and Riddles who have played Melee.
Seeders are massive DK haters.

I have been learning falco recently, and have been experimenting with two different grips.
I have played claw on PlayStation for games like cod for most of my life, so the grip feels pretty natural. I have noticed two distinct differences when I play claw versus normal.
When playing normal, I can wavedash very consistently, including wavedash out of shine, even somewhat consistently in game. However, I mess up short hops a decent amount, which makes my SHFFL super inconsistent and makes me laser much less often.
When playing claw, I can short hop much more consistently, allowing me to utilize lasers and SHFFL a lot better. The problem with claw though is I can very rarely wavedash. Especially out of shine (I end up with the full lag out of a shine pretty often too).
As a pretty new player with not a lot of muscle memory built yet, what is the consensus on which grip I should continue using?
I know this is a pretty subjective question, it wondering if claw is pretty common in smash or not. I could see claw potentially hurting my hands during long sessions with how high the APM of this game is, but admittedly I do feel a lot more in control of my character, with the downside of wavedashing feeling pretty awkward
I really enjoy this games movement and been playing for couple of months seriously now. I don't really get mad that easily, but loosing in this game makes me so salty sometimes that it takes the motivation out of me to keep playing. Especially if I loose against people, that I know I could beat.
I know this is a stupid post, but anyone know how to overcome this?
must be people still playing melee competitive today, even tho it would be sick to see M2K, Armada, Ken, and PPMD get back into playing
With OnlyNoobs approaching it's 200th and final iteration, many I imagine have been looking for a new online tourney that will match players of similar skill. Some of the NY S-Tier folks (the former region of Jmook) have been putting on a special online ladder tournament. Basically, starting at 6, you queue through start.gg/practice-makes-perfect-4, and then you get matched with other players with similar records. During that 2 hour window, you can play as many sets as you'd like, then at the end of the 2 hour window, the top 8 players with the best records compete in a double elim bracket.
Should provide as a great way to play against players of a variety of skill levels (had 32 entrants last week). I know top Upstate NY fox player Agent and NJ ganon Abe have shown up to previous iterations, but also a lot of other upstate/new england players have entered as well.
Tournament is open to east coast only (please check map in link). Hope to see some people there and enjoy some games with a bit more stakes than spamming ranked/unranked :)
Starts tonight at 6pm ET, ladder lasts until 7:50 pm

Hey peeps. I'm new to learning the movement mechanics of Melee (muscle memory is currently used to Ult). Just need a little help with something.
I'm working on getting better with my consistency in L-cancelling after fast fall aerials, but I keep getting stuck in place when trying to get moving again afterwards.
Like if I try to FF bair and then L-cancel and then trying to start dashing, it's like the input doesn't register and I stand still with the stick fully at the left/right position.
Am I just too early with the input? Is this character dependent at all?
Many thanks.
yo will this controller

Newbie here, I recently started playing melee and probably have ~30 hours in slippi, and attended my first local recently, which was super fun, but I almost feel bad for the people I play because I clearly have no idea what I'm doing and find myself spamming smash attacks.
The issue is that when I use a character, I have no idea what moves I should do in any situation, and trying to make my character do a move at any given point in the screen feels random, like I'm throwing darts at where I want my character to go. I don't feel like I can even pick a main yet as I feel I haven't really experienced what playing any characters are really like. It's hard to formulate a game plan outside of wiggle around and occasionally throw out a random move in the direction of my opponent.
So I guess my question is what can I do from here so that I get to a point where I feel like I can move my character to where I want to and know what moves to throw out? Should I work on learning mechanics like short-hop, fast falling, and wavedashing, or should I just play target smash for like 20 hours to practice movement? Should I just binge flowchart videos?
I know this is a really weird question, but this game seems awesome, and it's frustrating to feel like I'm fighting my controller every match. I'd appreciate any tips on how to practice the game. Anything is appreciated :)
