My Friend's Rant Actually Might Benefit Someone

I am not good at posting on this site properly so I apologize but I will be using another's format. Okay, so I am mainly here to rant. My friend was speaking to another friend and they told them that the solution to dealing with racist people is recording them. He used to walk into restaurants, stores, and gas stations expecting to have to deal with some racism and ridiculous rudeness. But he doesn't have that problem anymore because when he suspects attitude from an employee or a fellow guest he pulls his phone out and puts it directly in their face. Half the time not even recording. He even pointed out that stores are awesome enough to even give their employees shirts, usually with name tags, that let the world know exactly who they're representing.

Why would a person of color ever be conservative?

Throughout the world, conservative parties and their supporters are far more likely to

  • oppose immigration
  • claim that minorities are poorly integrated
  • claim that minorities are a burden on society - higher rates of welfare use, crime, terrorism, offensive cultural practices
  • resent foreign or foreign-seeming languages or traditions
  • claim that racism is a spent force
  • contend that claims of racism today are often invented to silence dissent
  • reject racism as an explanation for higher rates of poverty among minorities, blaming cultural factors among the minorities themselves instead
  • claim that international poverty can largely be explained by cultural factors
  • oppose any kind of affirmative action
  • believe that minorities promoted to high positions didn't really earn it but are "affirmative action hires" or "DEI hires"
  • oppose any kind of reparations or even apology for historical injustices
  • believe in a traditional curriculum, stocked with Western literature, and Western history told approvingly.
  • minimize or even justify historical wrongs such as colonialism
  • resist all efforts to re-evaluate historical figures in light of modern values on racism
  • believe that if white males are overrepresented in senior positions it's because they really are better qualified

And yet - many people of color are conservative. There is the prime minister of the UK, Rishi Sunak. There is Dilan Yeşilgöz, born in Turkey and now leader of the Netherlands' conservative VVD party. And in the United States, Donald Trump, despite a long history of racist remarks, is polling higher among nonwhites than any Republican since before the civil rights era.

I have never understood this. The reason I have an intense personal distrust and fear of conservatism is I don't believe they want me in their countries. And I don't understand why all people of color don't feel that way.

Police officer harassed me

Me (Asian 22M) was at a festival yesterday in DC selling good with my family. It’s a Japanese festival. At the end of the festival I went to get our van so we could clean and prepare for today (selling food two days in a row here) anyways I get to the gate and this white police officer comes to me with an attitude right off the bat. He says “are you supposed to come in or not? You need to be a vender” I say back “yes I’m a vender my tent is literally right there” (I point at the tent our set up was 50 feet from the entrance) he then says that I was being smart and he said I needed to leave for trespassing and said “why don’t you go back to cracking peanuts” I have no idea what that means? And the way he looked down on me… I went to go park the van somewhere else I went to my mom to get our certification papers and I went up to him and showed them to him and cussed him out. And then he used his speaker on his truck and said “go back over there and crack your peanuts” I started aggressively cussing at him and my family pulled me back. There was 4 black men there that witnessed the entire thing and they were disgusted with the cop. They work at the event and they apologized for what happened and said they didn’t like the guy either. Today when I came back one of the guys came to me and said he had reported what happened and the officer was then removed from the event and I wouldn’t have to worry about him. This is why I treat people with love and kindness to those who deserve it. There was plenty of people there who could’ve helped but at the end it was my black brothers who helped… because they understand and relate to the racism. Wish I could thank the guy again but I can’t find him. You deserve blessings my friend thank you. Please always stand up against racism.

Racism against Indian international students unreal in Canada.

Like we are the lucrative assets of the country but thier racism is raising day by day. They always say things like we smell like curry and follow no hygiene which is just hate and not truth. I am not saying every Indian is perfect but targeting entire nation and ethnicity says a lot about this country.

Racist white man

Okay I’m just here to rant cause I’m super pissed off. I was walking back home today and I had my phone in hand and was about to cross the street when the pedestrian light turned on but there was a car coming super fast so naturally I waited till he slowed down a little to begin crossing and this guy reached the crossing and shouts “Put your phone down and cross”, mind you I glanced at my phone after I had already started crossing and then I pointed at the pedestrian crossing timer indicating that the timer is still on, its far from over so what are you on about and then he shouts again “Put your phone down dumbass”?? IT WAS MY RIGHT OF WAY. HOW DOES IT MATTER HOW LONG I TAKE TO CROSS WHETHER I LOOK AT MY PHONE OR NOT TILL THE COUNTDOWN IS OVER HE IS SUPPOSED TO WAIT. and the dumbass part. I know people have seen much worse but that was just so uncalled for and out of the blue for me and my entire time here in the states I haven’t experienced racism but I’m pretty sure this man had racist intentions because I had my scarf wrapped around my head cause my ears were cold and I’m guessing he thought I was Muslim. I feel horrible now because I’ve gone 7-8 months thinking maybe things are not that bad but I’ve realised it’s just not that bad for me. Why are people horrible human beings? It’s 2024. Why can’t everyone just be normal and nice. I’m so sorry for whoever has had to and continue to deal with this stuff often I can’t believe how frustrating and jarring it must feel.

Opinion

Do black males have to be exceptional to get raises and promotions at work? I’ve thought this for awhile, and this may only be true in my community, but I think black men have to be exceptional to get recognized. Meaning - if you have 5 workers and one is black, and everyone produces the same(average) when the time comes to make one of them in charge who gets chosen? I say this because I only see black men get positions of power when they are exceptional - second to none. And even then it still seems like it’s up for debate. Also when black men are just average, they get labeled negatively even though they produce the same. Just saying this is my experience in my community in the Midwest and I am sure it’s not like this everywhere but I would like to hear others experiences/opinions.

Thanks!

I was blocked for admiring Beyonce's new album

So I'm not a super fan of beyonce or anything, love her just as much as I love many other artists. I don't even know a ton of her music, more the chart toppers. Well...I have an acquaintance in my photography circle that I was friends with on social media, a white girl from the south. When Texas hold em came out she posted that she hates America for allowing beyonce into the country scene and that she knows nothing about country music. Her few white girlfriends proceeded to comment on her post further about how they "want to move out of this stupid country". I (an African American woman) then posted "while Texas hold em isn't my favorite song, I do think it's really cool that a Black woman recorded a country album and her song made it to the top of the charts." I got no response and then I wad blocked.

Can anyone else agree with me that it's kind of absurd to want to leave your country because a Black woman made some country inspired music?? I was appaled and kind of hurt that I simply stated my opinion and bam...blocked 🤔 is it all silly or is this really messed up?

Racism in the UK

Hey guys, I’ve been studying in the UK for almost a year now. I love the UK, and I’ve made lots of local friends. However, I’ve also experienced a lot of racism, and I’m feeling quite sad about it :((( These racist behaviors are both explicit and implicit. Some people would walk right up to me and say ‘Ching Chong’ or yell at me, telling me to go back to my country. But most of the time, I face implicit discrimination. For instance, once when my friends and I were in a restaurant with many white people, some waiters and waitresses just ignored us and didn’t serve us. Sometimes, when I was waiting in a queue, the staff greeted the white customers but ignored me as if I wasn’t there. I feel quite hopeless and sad about this. I’ve done nothing wrong and always try to treat others equally and friendly. But this is just what I get. Some may say it’s because people hate the Chinese government. But individuals aren’t the government; they just want to live their lives! Also, some news is just propaganda. Some people haven’t even been to China and accuse us of being rubbish. I’m not sure how to deal with all these emotions. Could someone tell me?

Fighting Racism in Europe

Hello to all.

I'm a black who lives in Italy and I've been and continue being a victim of racism of the justice system and the police because of the colour of my skin. Could someone help me with any sources, ideas or links which can help to effectively start fighting back because this hatred towards me is driving me insane.

Study: White Flight From Asian Immigration: Evidence From California Public Schools

Link to paper [PDF]: https://www.nber.org/system/files/working_papers/w31434/w31434.pdf

Abstract

Asian Americans are the fastest-growing racial group in the US but we know little about how Asian immigration has affected cities, neighborhoods and schools. This paper studies white flight from Asian arrivals in high-socioeconomic-status Californian school districts from 2000-2016 using initial settlement patterns and national immigrant flows to instrument for entry. We find that, as Asian students arrive, white student enrollment declines in higher-income suburbs. These patterns cannot be fully explained by racial animus, housing prices, or correlations with Black/Hispanic arrivals. Parental fears of academic competition may play a role.
