OpenTTD is an open source remake of Chris Sawyer's Transport Tycoon Deluxe. The project aims to produce a fully open source version of the 1994 classic, while extending it with new graphical options, signal types, and much more. Best of all, it's completely free!
This subreddit welcomes any OpenTTD related content, discussions, and questions! Transport-related subjects are also permitted, but please try to keep it somewhat relevant to the game at hand.

Ignore the railway station
I have just started to completely overhaul my bus system. Taking out of service most (probably all) of my passenger buses, and replacing them with the most up-to-date buses, that have a 96 capacity. But, it only picks up exactly half, 48. I have tried paying with the order options, like making it Full Load Any Cargo, and turning off Non-Stop - but to no avail. I have a feeling that the fact it's only picking up exactly half it's capacity has some relevance?
Thanks in advance (this is my first game of openTTD) π
Hi..... When looking at specs before buying a new vehicle, what should I be looking for, and if you could also tell me why, that would really help. Obviously I know the obvious ones, but some of them I have no idea what they mean, and if I should be looking for a higher number or a lower number...! π
I have breakdowns turned off, btw.
As always, thanks in advance...
Hi gang. So I was mooching around some of the online maps that are out there, and I clicked on a UK map. So I just wanted to give a little shout out of appreciation to whoever created this. I'm from the UK, and the attention to detail in terms of geographical towns and even little villages is just next level. Not to mention the fact that there are loads and loads of non-standard vehicles, and I'm sure a shitload of other stuff. Bear in mind I am a completely new player.
I don't know if I'll play this map with the Android tablet that I'm using, because I think when I start building my business my tablet might just implode... or I will...! π
But anyway, apologies for this rather pointless post, I just wanted to show my appreciation for the hours and hours that must have been sunk into creating this incredible piece of work.

I have a steel mill and a factory that are both covered by one rail station. There is a consistent flow of iron to the steel mill and the station fills up with steel but that doesn't get converted into goods by the factory. Is this intended behaviour or is there a way to make it work
OpenTTD is an amazing game, but let's list down the most crazy and stupid part of it!
Question - Answered: Iβm at 2034 and Iβve had a failed auto renewal on a copter, but there are no helicopters available to replace it with. Is this just a lul or are all my helipads and heliports now redundant. Ferries just donβt cut it for the oil rigs as they are too far away from towns
I was playing TTD in 1997-1998 and had lots of fun. I liked building logistical train networks, optimizing that to pass more trains on the same railways, growing industry and beating competitors.
Since then I played many different games. I've completed Dyson Sphere program with all achievements. After that factorio, played Factorio PY mod. ATM I'm a bit tired from those games and would like to try something else.
TTD has its place in my heart and I would like to give OpenTTD a try.
Could you please recommend me a map and settings to play and challenge of the "average complexity"?
28 years ago I did enjoy playing the 'vanilla' map (coal and industries, no cones and sugar canes), I am not afraid of big maps and enjoy accessing new technologies and like experimenting.
Should I just start the same default map? I tried it maybe 10 years ago but after several ours... I game up. TBH, I don't remember why. Maybe create a bigger map size? Or maybe there is a more modern default map? Maybe I should use some mods...?
Please suggest if you've experienced something similar and found something in the game that gave you a new life.
These are my two twin cities. They are growing so rapidly that I have focus on them and can't focus on expanding my rail network. How to I stop them from growing outwards (i m tired of making new bus network for these two cities), how much more will they grow? is there any limit?
you can surely check out on the map, how much they have grown as compared to other cities.
So when I click on a bus depot, hit new vehicle, and as normal the list of available vehicles pops up. BUT every time I click on a vehicle to check out it's stats, it hides it from the list!! I don't have the hide button selected, there are no buttons selected at all - it's just the list of vehicles as normal. Normally, I can click on any of the vehicles and check out their stats... but it just keeps hiding the vehicle and I have to select unhide it again. It's a real pain..... I'm only using the same process that I've been using since I started the game.
Has anyone else ever experienced this? It's doing my little peanut brain in... π³
EDIT So I have started a new saved game, and the problem has stopped. I had only just recently deleted my old save files - but thankfully I had some autosaves.....phew!!!!
GO Transport Limited are pleased to announce the multi-million pound investment of a new passenger transport system in the area of The English Riviera, including the thriving cities of Torquay, Paignton and the surrounding towns.
All of the old buses will be replaced with modern, 96-capacity buses, but here is the exciting news - a brand new electric tramway system, with vehicles able to carry 135 passengers, and travel up to speeds of 80 km/h! Initially, this will connect Torquay, Paignton and Brixham, but we have plans to expand into the surrounding towns soon.
We are now offering contracts to the lowest bidders for the construction of this new, exciting project, that will greatly enhance the lives of the great people of The English Riviera. As always, the company with the fattest brown envelope, left under the tree outside the CEOs office will win any contracts available.
Yours..... David S, CEO GO Transport
is there a way i can change from trains to monorails automatically or i need to change every single train manually ?
Just a quickie before I finally turn it off for the day. What a fabulous game - no comparison to the original version back in the day. Excuse the poor picture...I don't have Reddit on my tablet, so it's just a photo of the screen.
I also have some coal/iron ore/steel action going on elsewhere on the map. I need to overhaul my ancient bus system - I have been concentrating on the trains elsewhere and it is now old and creaky. The map above, that was some little towns connected, they are like one massive city now. I might get an electric tramway going. And I'm going to build up another area and get my first couple of airports in the go.
And I haven't even scratched the surface yet. Mental....!!!!
Thanks for all the help and your patience guys.... Cheers!! ππ
I play on openttd pro servers specifically the 2k & 4k Population ones.. more than often i find a random person using my username (PotatoPotato) joining the server. This is funny imo but I'm wondering if i should be worried
So my station is only picking up 58% of the coal produced.... just not good enough! I built a new train and added a couple of siding tracks (I think that's what you call them?) but the train just sits in the depot. Do I actually need to build a new station with two tracks and then double the tracks? Is there a better way?
Thanks.....
I now have a redundant road/depot/lorry station in the ass end of nowhere, highly unlikely I will use them. Are they costing me money? If not, then I'll leave them alone. If they are costing me money (I tried using the '?' info button, but that doesn't tell me any costs being incurred) is it worth the expenditure to demolish them?
Thanks ... apologies for all the questions! π
EDIT I have deleted the stations/depot
In response to an earlier post I made, a reply told me that as long as there is a vehicle picking up, coal mines shouldn't disappear - but this one clearly has (and another one I created). There used to be a coal mine next to that lorry park - honestly!!
So I have found the page that shows you how much each industry building produces - very handy! So I've found the coal mine that produces the most coal (234 tonnes per month), and I'm going to link it to a power station....using a railway! Ooooh....
Do you think I need to get out more? π
UPDATE (as I am sure that you are all utterly fascinated...π) Built an SH125, with 6 wagons, making Β£14k per trip - most satisfying! ππ
Will the coal mine eventually run out of coal?
Just hit FOUR million in the bank! I know most of you are reading this and laughing and thinking "ppffft, 4 mill, what an amateur!!"....π€£π€£π€£
Hi gang..... So with thanks to advice from you guys, I switched off breakdowns... definitely the right thing to do. For the little bit of realism it gives, it's just not worth the hassle. But, I would like the realism of vehicles having an age limit, so now I have switched off breakdowns are my vehicles just everlasting? I have a couple of vehicles in the red that need replacing... With anything happen if I don't?
Thanks in advance... πππ
How can I lessen the amount of passengers in the settings? or is there any grf's that can do it? I set passenger generation to linear but it's still too much, I just want to build a simple network and not a complicated one
I've got about 300 hours in the game and have played with many types of NewGRFs, ones that change the economy, engines, graphics, etc. I'm curious if there are any that change the way rivers are placed on the map.
One of my favorite things about taking Amtrak cross-country is when the train tracks follow a river meandering through mountains, and I'd love to be able to recreate that in some way in OpenTTD. As far as I've seen, rivers spawn almost independent of the surrounding terrain, other than interaction with other water.
Hello. My friend started to play with me, but he has huge troubles to construct juntions. Especially if they had multiple lines to connect. For that i created simple roundabout junction for him to solve those early problems :D
To all the veteran player can you flex your town or your works. I am new to the game. I want to get an idea how far can i go in this game.
could to give some tips for this new player as well.
