Extreme tricks to reduce the weight of a fully packed bag

I was listening to a program by Alice Morrison, a journalist , BBC presenter and adventurer. She completed the marathon de sables a 250km race through the desert carrying water and supplies. She talked about extreme ways she resorted to reducing the weight of the backpack including cutting the handles of tooth brush.

Some of the airlines like vietjet are very militant about the carryon weights.

What are some of your tricks to reduce not only the size, but also the weight of the bag as we all lug around lot of technology these days.

REI Co-op Big Haul 40 vs. Roadtripper 40

I have a 2 week study abroad trip I'm going on in June (FL to Amsterdam). My first time flying was only a year ago for a week long camping trip out west, so I'm pretty new to air travel gear.

I want to make good use of my REI membership for the anniversary sale and REI bags are 30% off. I'm between the Big Haul 40 and the Roadtripper 40.

A lot of people seem to like the Big Haul, but the Roadtripper is about $50 cheaper. Other than the Big Haul having more straps and a sturdier material, are there any other reasons I should choose that over the $50 cheaper option?

I'm willing to spend the extra if it's worth it, but it seems like they both have pretty similar specs. Is something heavier duty like the Big Haul a safer bet?

Good sandals vs cheap sandals

I'm going to Indonesia for the first time, and I'm not sure if it's worth it to buy a good pair of sandals (Teva etc.) or just to get a cheap pair and do my walking in walking shoes. Is it really worth the money to buy good sandals?

I Hate My Patagonia Refugio

First time buying a dedicated travel bag. Went with the Patagonia Refugio 30L and tbh, I hate it and think it's an objectively bad bag.

Disclaimer that I will be bringing it on a two day weekend getaway with some light hiking. So I'll reserve full judgement until then. I want to be wrong.

As for trying it out of the box...

It doesn't stand up on it's own with or without luggage.

Neither the laptop holder nor bag itself have a false bottom, so your laptop is smashing against the ground with only a tiny strip of padding.

The straps are very thin and have a rough texture that scratches bare skin. They have almost no give to them and are super structured to retain their shape.

There's no padding at all for the top strap. It's also so close to the bag itself, it's very difficult to grab and go. Both ends of the bag on the side of the strap stick up and over the strap, so that's great for it not getting caught on anything, but it makes it difficult to grab it.

Worth mentioning all the padding sucks on this bag. If I had to sum up the bag, it'd be cheap. Everything feels so cheap. If you told me it was some generic Chinese brand bag that cost $30, I'd believe you.

You can't open or close the main storage with one hand. You must use two, and one must be placed opposite to get a ton of leverage when pulling.

It feels silly to complain about, but it's so annoying trying to open this bag without thinking. I need to actually set it down and intentionally place both hands and give it my full attention, to get inside this bag.

Some things I knew about before buying the bag but still suck, The inside isn't a different color from the outside, I got black, so I'm never seeing anything black like clothes or wires unless I stick my hand in to feel. My first time using a drawstring to hold something like a rain jacket, but it doesn't seem to hold it with any force, even tightened. If I jostle the bag at all, even tightened, both the rain coats I tried hang or outright fall out. I'd never trust this on a walk, let alone a hike.

Edit: forgot to mention, if you fully unzip the main compartment, your zipper tabs will likely fall into the side water bottle pouches, which is really damn annoying.

What's your favourite travel shaving machine?

I have a Philips, but it still weighs at least a pound. And carrying it the entire trips, just so I used it once every 1.5 to 2 weeks has started to annoy me.

I've started to carry just 2 guides, and don't bother with the charger either as it holds few hours of charge. But still think about it every time I have to walk a few hours with my bag.

So do you have any recs on a lightweight shaving machine with guides? I need guides I grow out mzly beard and need to trim every week or two.

Let's say you were building your ultimate kit but you had to spend it all on Amazon. This is exactly my scenario with a gift card I just received. For context, I'm a male, 5'7, frequent business traveler.

Would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions!

Thoughts on an office bag. Debating Aer Flight Pack and others

At work I no longer have a permanent desk so I will need a bag to take my laptop and all others work and commuter items. Basically I need a mobile office that doesn't look like an intern s bag. I work at a bank so slightly professional(Not being used as a gym bag) I have the Wandrd Prvke Lite (my universal all airlines personal item) and concerned it's a hair too small. I been debating about getting the Aer Flight Pack 3 but not sure if too big and a bit too clumsy. My other thoughts is Bellroy Venture Ready (on sale) Bellroy Via, Aer Day Pack 2 X (on sale) and Evergoods PLC 20. I want to keep it personal item size in case I kno the Venture won't do that. Any thoughts?

Looking for Suggestions for a Work/Travel/All In One Backpack

Hi all,

I work in the tech industry and my current backpack's straps are starting to tear, so I've been looking for a replacement. All I've had in the past are cheap $25-75 backpacks that were functionally ok but there was nothing great about them. They were uncomfortable when loaded, organization wasn't great, etc, etc.

Now that I've started down the rabbit hole, I'd like to get a better quality bag. I wasn't looking at spending $2-300 on a bag, but here we are. I've just been reading Reddit and watching so many reviews that I'm getting a little bit of information overload and it's making the decision tough.

The bag will function normally as an "every day" carry type backpack. I put "every day" in quotations because I largely work remote and only go into the office once every 1-2 weeks or so. My job requires travelling, so I would like the bag to double as a travel pack.

When I do travel, I have a carry on size suitcase I normally bring, so I would like the backpack to be able to fit under a seat as a personal item. However, having the bag be able to function as a single travel bag for shorter (1-2 day) trips would be nice. In those instances where it's packed out with clothes, I would be fine putting the bag in an overhead compartment. Also to note, when I do travel, I try to fly Delta, so I'm not looking to conform to stricter Ryan Air personal item bag sizes.

The equipment I need for travel are:

  • Surface pro laptop (15")
  • Laptop charger
  • Power bank
  • Multi-device charger
  • Headphones (Sony WH-1000XM5)
  • Earbuds
  • Charging cables
  • Small work related devices (probably 2-3 on a trip at most, all 3"x 3" or smaller)

On longer trips, I'd also like to bring my personal laptop which is a Asus 15.4" (it's a little beefier in terms of thickness compared to work laptop), its charger, and mouse. However, on those trips I'd be bringing the suitcase so there'd be no need for clothes or anything in the backpack.

The choices I'm considering so far are:

Alpaka Elements Travel Pack X-Pac

  • favorite in terms of looks
  • like that it comes with the waist strap
  • they give a military/veteran discount
  • largest and obviously hardest to get under a plane seat

Aer Travel Pack 3 X-Pac (open to both the regular and small, but leaning towards small)

  • favorite in terms of organization
  • general consensus seems to be that this is THE backpack of backpacks
  • no included waist strap
  • no discount (unless I wait for Black Friday, which I'm open to)

STM Myth 28L

  • this is my "cheap option"
  • bag looks nice
  • materials/organization/utility underwhelming by comparison
  • no waist strap option at all, nor any load lifters

I am open to other suggestions as well. I'd really appreciate any insight anyone has, especially if they've used the mentioned packs in the scenarios I would be using them... especially if they've been able to compare multiple of them.

I don't really care for anything too flashy and would like it to be suitable looks-wise to show up with it in a professional tech setting. Essentially, I'm looking for a happy mix between a travel bag, an EDC bag, an personal item bag. I know I'm not gonna get one that does all of those "perfect", so I can live with things like it sticking out underneath the seat a little or being a little on the heavier side.

Thanks in advance. I'll try to be as responsive as I can to any questions you all have to help narrow things down.

Patagonia MLC Small vs. AER Travel Pack 3 Small

I travel a lot for work. I am either on a 2-3 day quick business trip or a ~2 week extended stay. For my two week trips I take a roller carry on (47.9L) and a Tumi Briefcase but for my 2-3 day trips this setup is overkill. After having to gate check my carry on for the last 3 business trips (and the last gate check was a nightmare), I’ve decided to invest in onebag travel.

I normally pack light, a few pairs of dress pants/button downs, quarter zips/jacket, socks and wayyy more underwear than I probably need. I only back 1 or 2 pairs of shoes. I wear the hybrid dress/gym shoes 90% of the time and sometimes bring gym shoes if my hotel has a gym and schedule permitting.

I’m between the MLC Small and AER Travel Pack 3 Small. Any advice? Or other bag recommendations?

Common Airlines:

  1. United
  2. Delta
  3. Allegiant
  4. Southwest

Western Rise Transit Overshirt

Hi everyone,

I am considering buying a Transit Overshirt. I've watched some reviews on YouTube. The reviews mentioned the shirt's weight. One reviewer weighed it. It weighed over a pound. Given this, I am assuming the best way to travel with it is to wear it onto the plane, to save on packing space and to stay warm while in flight. But if it needs to be packed, how compressible is it? Also, will it look like a crumpled mess when it is unpacked? I am a big fan of wrinkle- free clothing. I don't want to invest in something that is going to take a lot of effort to maintain while traveling.

Also, can you recommend a lighter weight wrinkle- free long sleeve shirt (think standard oxford cloth business shirt for men) that is similar in styling to the Overshirt?

Thank you

Hi all, first time poster. I have been reading so much reviews here and getting more confused as I read more. I am looking for a sling bag that ideally holds the below nice and snug (something below 7-8L). This will generally act as a travel+edc for work. Trying to keep it as minimalist as possible.

  • X100VI (Lens hood attached)

-Ipad Pro 11inch

-Slim Power bank (snapwireless)

-USB-C Cable

-Microfibre cloth

CodeOfBell X-POD II - Waterproof?

I’m trying to find confirmation on this . They are now using RE/COR RN66 nylon. The pictures seem to indicate it is, but I see they also sell a rain cover for this sling. Thanks!

PS: Also looking for any opinions of this sling as well. I’m fascinated by it and their larger X-PAK EVO.

Parks (cities) and recreation?

After falling more and more in-love with photography, I've been dubbed the family photographer..

So on top of me getting lost in big cities on my own while taking photos, i will now also take pictures of family outings. (Events, amusement parks, trips/vacation ect).

Too this end i need a Camera bag for my gear.. (Bag for solo and family city and amusement park visits across Europe).

My current gear is as follows: Sony a6400 Sony 70-350mm Sigma 56mm Ulanzi F38 travel tripod *and will get a ultra wide down the road).

Would be peachy if it also could fit: Sunglasses Powerbank/cables. Air buds/pods Cloth and dust blower Keys/card holder Air tag. Maybe snacks or bottle..

Pet peeve : I've gained in this hobby, is stopping fully to put bag on ground, to then pull out camera to shoot stuff, every... single.. time.

So side opening or bag that can handle camera clip would be aces. <3

(I would say sling/messenger bag works, but heard they give shoulder pain.. and don't handle rain..)

Any and all tips/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Multi-use Camera Bag

Let me know if this is the wrong sub.

I’m trying to find a 10-15L sling/bag that can safely carry a DSLR, but also fit other essentials (Nalgene bottle, packable jacket, snacks, etc…)

I can’t find anything that offers both features in a compact size so let me know if you have any recommendations!

Should i choose the second option?

I’m going on a 2 week trip and i recently discovered this subreddit. I want to travel with one bag of course, but i’m afraid the bag will be too large and i’ll have to pay a fine. I’m especially worried since Ryanair is notoriously strict about their baggage policy. What do you guys think?

I will be packing enough clothes for a week so i can wash my clothes halfway through the trip. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

I am looking to buy a leather mens wallet for my fiance that has a coin zipper or pouch in it. Preferably from these brands; Fossil, Polo Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, Tommy Hilfiger, or Guess. If you have any other brand recommendations, please come through as I cannot find any.

Breathable Hiking Boots

Unfortunately was diagnosed with a metatarsal stress fracture not too long before I'm due off on 2 months in South East Asia. Been told by two podiatrists I MUST wear hiking boots (if I even get out the boot in time...).

Not ideal given the temperatures, so I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with any breathable, stiff soled, non Goretex hiking boots they would recommend. Ideally not something too break the bank worthy, and am UK based if makes a difference to availability.

Matador Beast 28 Clone

I was browsing on Amazon and found this backpack:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CQXFYZMM?ref=cm_sw_r_cso_cp_apin_dp_FD5F0P7E03MX45NH677N&ref_=cm_sw_r_cso_cp_apin_dp_FD5F0P7E03MX45NH677N&social_share=cm_sw_r_cso_cp_apin_dp_FD5F0P7E03MX45NH677N&starsLeft=1&skipTwisterOG=1

Anyone have any experience with it? It looks identical to the Matador Beast 28 to the point where it might be the same backpack from the same factory just with different branding.

1 month trip to Europe

I currently have a Farpoint 70 bag and was thinking of using it to backpack across Europe but I am worried that it might be too big for a carry on even with removing the daypack and storing it under my seat. Does anyone have any experience using the bag as a carry on. I believe I could get away with it as a carry on in the USA as it looks like a duffle all zipped up but I am not sure about European flights. Any insight would be greatly appreciate.

3 week trip to Thailand and Vietnam - Packing Tips!

Hi!

I am going to be in Thailand and Vietnam this August for 3 weeks. I want to limit myself to one bag as this would make traveling much easier for me.

first, are there any bag recommendations that anyone has? that would be much appreciated.

Second, I am not sure how many pants/shorts/shirts I should bring for a trip like this. I am going to be in a remote part of Thailand for around 2 weeks with most likely no access to any place to do laundry. If there is any suggestions on how I may clean my clothes as well that would be great! maybe it would help me cut down on space.

overall, if there are any tips or suggestions on how many items I should bring or general tips that would be much appreciated

Thank you in advance!

Hiking shoes for the jungle

Hi there,

Weighing some different options for hiking shoes - heading to Indonesia and going on some jungle hikes, volcano treks, in addition to city walking, scuba etc.. Our Sumatra outfitter recommended something like Keen Newport H2 or sneakers. I'd like a bit more coverage than the Keen's....

Some contenders: Astral TR1 Mesh, Xero Aqua X Sport, Techamphibian

What do you think?

Need a suggestion for Boots

Hey all, I have a trip coming up that involves some work, some hiking, and some events that I'll have to be dressed up. This creates a very difficult situation for shoes, I don't want to pack 4 pairs of shoes.

I'm looking for a pair of boots that -has a steel toe for work sites -is comfortable enough to hike -is dressy enough to wear with slacks and blazer

This might be a fairy tale, but I'm hoping someone can suggest something

Have to check my 40L backpack because of liquid limitations upon my return. Things I should know?

Hi, I'm ending my first trip one bagging in South Korea, and the experience has been great so far. The only limitation I have right now is for cosmetic/liquids I've purchased as presents. I have one bottle that's 350ml, but even without it, I wouldn't be able to fit all the purchases into the 1L carry-on liquid allowance bag.

I've purchased a cheap foldable carry-on duffle at Daiso that I'll be using to store my electronics and anything sensitive, and in my actual backpack I'll be packing the souvenirs in with some clothing for extra cushioning.

I'm only wondering if my backpack will be able to stand the abuse of checked luggage? It's a tomtoc 40L. Unfortunately it doesn't have the ability of tucking away the shoulder straps, so I was thinking of grabbing a rain over with buckles and putting it on backwards to cover the shoulder straps (if that makes sense?)

I've seen people say that you can also check in a box, but I think that would be very difficult to move with on the day of the flight, where as I can slip on the raincover before checking it in.

Thoughts?

Anyone have advice for replacing luggage wheels?

Hello!

So, I have a nice Charriot hard suitcase with 1/4 wheels broken. I've scoured the internet off and on for a few days trying to pin down an accurate replacement. I tried contacting the company but they, I guess, no longer exist?

Has anyone had good luck in replacing Charriot parts, or have suggestions on where to look beyond Amazon/Google?

Thank you!

Please talk me out of buying a new bag

I'm doing a one week trip to Italy next month and I've decided to make it my first onebag trip. I own an old Timbuk2 Especial Medio cycling backpack that's about 30L, close to the volume I think I need for my packing list. However, it's shaped more for aerodynamics than cubic space efficiency or ease of loading, and I'm finding myself eyeing the dedicated travel backpacks like the MLC mini with envy.

How much does the shape of the holding space really matter? I have the money, but buying a new bag when I have one that technically fits the requirements feels silly.
