Guide for determining hair type
PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING: Some basic tips on going No Poo:
No-Poo has a variety of meanings, but they all refer to eliminating the use of sulfates & harsh chemicals (commonly found in modern, commercial shampoos) that strip our hair & scalp of its natural oils, which causes dry, frizzy, damage-susceptible hair & makes our scalp's oil production go into overdrive.
There are many ways to go shampoo-free & still get clean-looking, nice-smelling hair! Every method can do something different for your hair. This is a learning process; don't get discouraged if one method doesn't give you the perfect results right away. There is a method that works for every hair type, it just takes a bit of tweaking to find it. That's what this sub is for!
Before you put anything new on your hair/skin, make sure you use the recommended ingredient amounts & ratios, and follow the directions (to avoid drying out hair, irritations, etc.). Try new ingredients or products in small amounts first, especially if you have any skin sensitivities or are trying something completely different from usual.

I am looking for recipes for a deep clarifying shampoo. I have quite thick hair and I use oil based pomade as a styling product. I have looked around and some sources say that castile soap, Apple Cider Vinegar, water and Baking soda is a good mix. I do not want to try anything or buy ingredients just to find out it does not work.
What do you guys think? Any other suggestions?
Feeling more confident and healthy than ever! thank you everyone for introducing me to this!
Hi all!
New here and just starting my own hair growth journey - I lost weight rapidly years ago and my hair hasn't been right since - it's thinner than ever and I have made my own natural & organic hair oil that has been helping a ton with hair length (castor, coconut, rosemary, saw palmetto, pumpkin seed, stinging nettle oil(s)), but I want to go a step farther and make my own shampoo to help promote folicial support/strength.
I feel like once I use store bought shampoo it's strips my hair so so badly! So I've started doing some research and really want a decent cleansing (not stripping) shampoo that's natural, I'd like to add my own ingredients that will also promote hair strength and thickness!
This list is what I have so far, please share your thoughts and personal recipes - what worked best for you and why, any advice would help! ❤️
my hair looks and feels the exact same as before I started I've been trying different methods for ages and nothing seems to work I even got distilled water and still nothing. I've tried so many different remedies and nothing works
My hair doesn't get oily without shampoo so I Just use conditioner because no matter what I do it's always dry. It's a bit wavy but It starts to curl when wet.
I've been meaning to try texture powder and It seems I'd need shampoo to wash it out but I'm worried my hair will dry out even more.
Would conditioner be enough to get it out and can I use it every day? or at least for most of the week?
Here's the brand I bought:

So I know this is an incredibly basic and amateur-ish question but I'm having trouble knowing what actually counts as no-poo. Geologie Co-Wash doesn't have silicones in it—is that sufficient to make it no-poo compatible? Here is the full ingredient list:
Water/Aqua/Eau, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Cetearyl Alcohol, Cetyl Alcohol, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Behentrimonium Chloride, Glycerin, Squalane, Stearyl Alcohol, Fragrance/Parfum, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Panthenol, Hydrolyzed Rice Protein, Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil, Menthol, Humulus Lupulus (Hops) Extract, Behentrimonium Methosulfate, Cetrimonium Chloride, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Propanediol, Citric Acid, Potassium Sorbate, Benzyl Alcohol, Sodium Benzoate, Limonene, Linalool, Geraniol

Alright so I haven’t used Shampoo in roughly 2 months and I’d like to put it in back in my routine with at least like once week. But I also need to grow my hair decent amount through November and I’m wondering if I starting shampooing again like even once a week I’ll have an imbalance of oils and my hair will start growing slower until it gets used to the oils I’m putting in.
Aqua, Aloe Barbadensis leaf juice, Rosa Damascena (Rose) Extract, Caprylyl/capryl Glucoside, Decyl Glucoside, Glycerin, Glycerin Glycerin & Aqua & Sodium Levulinate & Sodium Anisate, Sorbitol, Hydrolyzed Oat Protein, Guar Gum, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Olea Europaea (Olive) Oil, Xanthan Gum, Copaifera Officinalis (Copaiba Balsam) Oil, Citrus Sinensis (Sweet Orange) Essential Oil, Citric Acid, Pelargonium Graveolens (Geranium) Oil, Lavandula Officinalis (Lavender) Oil, Cananga Odorata (Ylang Ylang) Oil.
I just took a trip from San Diego to New York City and realized the significance the better water quality had on my hair during no poo.
In NY I didn't have sticky hair that would get clumped. I also didn't lose hair as much as I do in SD.
I found that NY water is 10-30 ppm while San Diego is 180-300 ppm.
To address this issue, I'm wondering if using a squeeze bottle with filtered water would work. I can just squeeze it on my scalp with one hand and scrub with the other hand. This may be more convenient as I shower in the gym vs a acid rinse.
Does anyone do something like this successfully?
So my sebum is naturally waxy, and it comes when washing hir with only water. In my country we don't hvae hard wayer so that shouldn't be problem. Is it normal?? Is it bad for my hair?
So I have been nopoo for 3 weeks. Week ago I had to use shampoo on my hair because ai got paint in it.. so if that counts then I have been no poo for a week. I have washed my hair once with silicone free conditioner otherwise I have washed my hair with only water.
I have to wash my hair with water everyday because the hair gets so oily so fast. I know it might do that in first few weeks into this journey, but I was wondering that could I go longer between washes in the future when (/if) the oily phase is over? Like if I could go at least one day between wash days, I would be happy.
About co-washing: I really like it and I think I might do it maybe once or twise a week. My conditioner has ph 3.8 so it should be good for hair and I think it might do good for scalp too if used few times a week since water's ph level is 7(neutral) and I've heard that scalp's ph level is somewhere between 6-5 (I could be wrong, but this is what infornation internet gave me:D). There is only one downside for me in co-washing, it doesn't clean ny hair as well as just water. It might be that I just didn't wash the conditioner out properly even tho I really tried to scrub it out with my fingertips.
I want to remind that this is my experience with co-washing and it might work differently for someone else:).
I've been using (and LOVING) new wash for the last 3 months. I have used the red boost which works surprisingly well on my bleached and red dyed hair, but is a bit too red and not copper enough for my ideal color.
I want to try adding semi-permenant dye (like ion/loreal) to my new wash and was curious if anyone else has tried this?
Hey there! I’ve been on the no poo train for almost a year now but I also have very hard water. I have a water softener but it only does so much and I currently use ACV, egg yolk (once in a while), and co-wash with Hairstory maybe once every other week depending on what my hair needs. Otherwise, I do water only between washes. I’d really like to ditch Hairstory entirely but it seems to help remove some dirt and add moisture temporarily.
I’ve heard that Malibu C helps remove residue and buildup from hard water. For context, my hair is super thin, fine, straight, chin length, and I’ve been experiencing some thinning as I’ve gotten older (I’m 37).
I’m curious if anyone out there with hard water and does no poo has tried Malibu C, and if trying it maybe once a month along with my no poo regimen would be worth interrupting the progress I’ve made on my hair and scalp. The main reason I’d like to try it is because my scalp gets itchy between washes from what I assume is hard water buildup. Though, I’m conflicted about whether it’s worth disrupting the progress I’ve made– and whether no poo is even worth continuing with the hell that is dealing with hard water. Another piece is I feel like my hair has been looking and feeling flat and dull. Any help/advice is greatly appreciated!
I did a baking soda rinse (for the first and last time, didn’t realise people had such negative results with it, yeesh!) and I was getting to the grease stage after maybe a week of no washing.
Decided to give ACV a go and then comb it through when dry with a BBB and for three days it looked AMAZING.
I have fine hair but not on these days. Curled nicely and when combed through held volume EVEN OVERNIGHT, which is unheard of.
But as the days have worn on results have been mixed. Had one day where I did a very thorough ACV wash and my hair felt too clean and limp, like how it gets when I shampoo it.
Anyone got any input / experience with the inconsistency of NoPoo? I’m not doing anything hugely different, I don’t think.
Thanks!
At first no poo was great and gave my hair more texture and volume. But even following a good routine and using bbb and filtered water my scalp began to run dry and I was snowing everywhere even to the point my friends would point it out and make fun of me. I’ve switched back to more hydrating shampoos and and a scalp conditioner. This works absolutely wonders and now I have the same texture that I’ve always wanted without having a dry scalp or flakes
What am I supposed to do?
In the first days, my hair got a lot of dandruff, itched and got oily. I'd say that 3 weeks after that, it isn't oily anymore, dandruffs are stopping and it doesn't itches anymore. I'd say it takes patience, and the results appears. My hair now has more volume and looks better. It is definitely worth it.
Does anyone else use rice water with ACV and have seen long term benefits? I used it once so far after my baking soda wash and my hair felt so soft when it dried and I'm hoping it'll stay that way.
Basically the title... Will it screw up my hair?
My family recently keep telling me my hair smells musty, unwashed, like a charity shop. I can also smell it sometimes to be honest. What recommendations do you have to care for it and remove the smell.
I have been on NoPoo for 10 years, and my hair only is washed with water, sometimes I put olive oil in it. It is only washed with shampoo 2/3 times a year when I go to the hair dressers. I have long hair naturally thin hair, just above my shoulders. No dandruff.
I play alot of sport, gym and sauna, every day. Therefor I sweat alot, my hair is covered with sweat after these activities. I always then wash in the shower with water, 90% of the time in a cold shower.
What recomendations do you have to remove the smell. They would be greatly appreciated.
My hair has always been super duper flat and it was pissin me off for a LOOONG time so I decided to go no shampoo and havent put anything in my hair for about 5 months now and my hair is feeling great! But recently it’s been going kinda flat after a couple of hours of showering. Is this normal? Should I be using something else to clean my hair?
My shampoo and "fragrance free" soap has been making me breakout all over my body for the past year and I've finally figured out that they're the culprit with the help of my dermatologist. I have long, thin hair, that gets oily pretty quickly, and it's gonna be tough to find a shampoo that both works for me and doesn't cause my skin to react. Is there a masterpost on this sub with how to follow the tenets of natural hair care? Thanks in advance!
Found a no poo shampoo powder on Etsy and I’m curious and kinda wanna buy it. I want to know if the ingredients are good. Thank u!
Ingredients - Yucca Powder, Soapwort Powder, Soap Nut Powder, Amla Powder, Brahmi Powder, Shikakai Powder, Flax Seed Meal, Ginger Root Powder, Bladderwrack Powder, Hibiscus Powder, Diatomaceous Earth, Horsetail Powder, Shavegrass Powder
I’ve tried a couple different shampoos and conditioners but just water washing gives it the best texture but it looks and feels greasy any recommendations?
Hair doesn't feel thin and frail anymore, which is a major plus! For some reason this last attempt at going nopoo didn't cause my scalp any itching, which used to be a problem before. No excess oil, I just wash with water two to three times a day while showering.
No reason to go back to shampoo for me anytime soon. But I'm not sure why the itching wasn't an issue this time, it used to make me mad before
