Guide for determining hair type

Porosity Quiz

PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING: Some basic tips on going No Poo:

  • No-Poo has a variety of meanings, but they all refer to eliminating the use of sulfates & harsh chemicals (commonly found in modern, commercial shampoos) that strip our hair & scalp of its natural oils, which causes dry, frizzy, damage-susceptible hair & makes our scalp's oil production go into overdrive.

  • There are many ways to go shampoo-free & still get clean-looking, nice-smelling hair! Every method can do something different for your hair. This is a learning process; don't get discouraged if one method doesn't give you the perfect results right away. There is a method that works for every hair type, it just takes a bit of tweaking to find it. That's what this sub is for!

  • Before you put anything new on your hair/skin, make sure you use the recommended ingredient amounts & ratios, and follow the directions (to avoid drying out hair, irritations, etc.). Try new ingredients or products in small amounts first, especially if you have any skin sensitivities or are trying something completely different from usual.

Common Terminology:

  • WO: Water Only
  • BBB: Boar Bristle Brush
  • ACV: Apple Cider Vinegar
  • BS: Baking Soda
  • Co Washing: Conditioner Only Washing
  • CGM: Curly Girl Method

Hair Thinning

So I went no poo about 2-3 years ago and went from having pretty bad dandruff to almost none and my hair felt healthier than ever. The last few months, however, my hair has been thinning particularly on the front and I'm not too sure why. There's two reasons I found that could be causing it, having showers with hot water and using a towel to dry my hair which I will be changing from now on. But I'd also like some more advice, I've been doing the same routine for the last 2-3 years and only recently have been having hair thinning problems, what other reasons could be causing this? If it helps I have medium thick hair that's straight, like a 1c or a 2a and the rest of my hair grows pretty fast and feels smooth. I was considering buying some rosemary water but im not too sure how effective that is.

When to Shampoo and use Conditioner

Sorry if it seems like I’m asking a familiar question but I’m new to hair care

So I can’t seem to find a straight answer and when I did I hear something new, my hair as male was naturally wavy and textured however I believe with too much use of bad 2 in 1 shampoo for years I made it straight and flat and didn’t like it,

now I shampoo and conditioner twice a week and have wavy hair and texture coming back, however days I don’t shampoo and conditioner my hair feels a little thick but still keeps the waves but doesn’t flow the same, I do wash my hair almost daily when showering or wet my hair atleast before styling it.

Now I heard u should be shampoo 1-2 times a week but applying conditioner everyday, I use Pantene because it’s affordable and feels good for my hair. But am open to suggestions, currently I rock a middle part flow kinda hairstyle but only around 4-6 inches of length on top and shorter on sides and back about 1-2 inches

I am little confused on the mixed statements about when to wash hair, when to shampoo and when to use conditioner so some clarification or even your thoughts would be great.

Thoughts on the ingredients in this bar? Would I need an ACV wash? How often should I use it?

Dry scalp

Ive tried no shampoo for a while but gave up, i think i have low porosity hair. I put my hair in water and it floats. Im not sure if i have hard or soft water, the area i live in says it should be soft (3-4) but my shower head has stains of white stuff. Ive tried no shampoo for about 3-4 months but had to give up because of the dry scalp. Any help?

Dry hair

I have been no poo for like 7years initially not knowing it was a thing people did I just decided I preferred my hair on the days after I hadn't washed it for a while. I've never done a single thing to care for it beyond a trim (I'm a male with mid length hair on top, very short sides) never had a greasy stage just kinda always how I like it, never smelled no scalp issues. Recently my hair has been so dry I dunno if it's just the weather, dusty conditions and windy (UK weather, I work outside I'm all weather's) I do what I normally do, just wet it with water in the morning to flatten it and soak it in the evening in the shower. My wife says I should just wash it this once but I don't wanna ruin my streak. I've let it get a touch longer than normal but its got so wirey. Any help appreciated

Hair is so dry!

Hi everyone,

I have been a lurker in the sub for a while and have been no poo (water only) for just over 4 years. Recently, my hair, all over but especially the ends, has been SO dry. I have not had this before and I really don’t know what to do? I got a trim and it seems to have done…. Nothing. So, any ideas? Please!

Thankyou!

Dr Squatch

Delete if not allowed! Okay this is a body wash question not a hair question, but i feel like a lot of people here would know the answer. I recently got a bar of Dr. Squatch Coconut Castaway (for body not hair, i currently am trying conker soap and ACR for that), and I want to know if it’s got any bad ingredients. Ingredients as follows: Saponified Oils of (Olive, Sustainable Palm, Coconut), Shea Butter, Natural Fragrance, Coconut Shreds, Coconut Milk, Coconut Water, Titanium Dioxide, Kaolin Clay, Sea Salt

it sounds good to me, but it leaves my skin feeling kind of.. sticky? idk if that’s normal.

Hair Help

Apologies for the vague title and long post, im very new to nopoo and not sure exactly where to get started. I have medium length wavy hair that im currently trying to grow out. I have tried cutting out shampoo from my routine and apply conditioner only but after 2-3 days of doing this my hair becomes stiff/hard to run my hand through. Because of this I typically just put shampoo again to reset my hair. Overall so far I have a decent bit of dandruff and my hair is just a mess with no shampoo. Do I just need to be patient or are there other things I can do? I want natural looking hair with little to no frizz and want my hand to easily run through it. One other thing to note, I shower both at my parents house and my college apartment and what Ive noticed is that my hair at home is always more frizzy, sticky, and stiff while at my apartment my hair is a lot smoother definitely a lot less sticky. I assume this is some hard/soft water thing but given I am on summer vacation I will be at my parents house for the most part and want to get around this water issue.

Update: Just looked into hard and soft water, I believe my apartment has hard water due to the gunk build up around my sink and none at my parents home. However the hard water feels so much softer on my hair and more slippery on the skin so Im not sure if im confusing the two

Hair loss - transition week 2

Hello! I’m currently entering my second week of transition. So far I’ve washed it twice: first time just one whole egg, second time whole egg + acv rinse. I’m still figuring everything out as I go, it’s so much information which is pretty exciting and overwhelming at the same time. I plan on slowly trying different methods so I can find what works for me, although that’s hard to say during transition.

Hair context: no hard water, low porosity, shoulder length, fine and wavy hair.

During both washes, as I massage my scalp, I’ve noticed massive hair loss unlike 2 weeks before starting no poo. I’m assuming it’s because of all the oil buildup, since my hair when greasy had always tended to shed more than normal. But even for my standards, I’m totally sure it’s a lot.

I’m a bit worried since there’s still a long way to go. I can deal with oily hair, but losing so much of it is a little scary… should it get better as transition follows?

Thank you!

minimal use of shampoo bar for safety

Hello everyone, I started my journey in nopoo, my last journey was not so successful, I washed my hair only with water every day for about a month, after which I bought myself a shampoo bar and did not think that I needed conditioner, by the way, after a month of nopoo my hair began to become less oily , now I bought myself a balm bar and just between washes, out of interest, I tried to wash only with it and was surprised, I plan to continue washing my hair with the balm bar and increase the intervals between washes, but my question is what is the minimum amount of shampoo I should use to avoid infections and germs on my head (I have a natural shampoo bar)

Troubleshooting stringy hair

I’ve been no poo for over a year now, and was previously low poo (washed with a shampoo bar once a week) for several years. The first few months were rough (I always wore my hair up in public), but once I realized I was dealing with waxy buildup I was able to troubleshoot better. Currently I do a wash every 3-4 weeks with either egg, chickpea flour, or applesauce (I also tried apple cider vinegar and lemon juice, which didn’t have the same effect) after which my hair looks really great, but will start to look stringy again after about 10 days. I live in an area with hard water so I would like to go serum only, but can’t seem to solve the stringy problem. Interestingly, although it may look greasy in the photo it does not actually feel greasy, it feels soft and silky. I have low-porosity, fine, straight hair. I use a bamboo comb and boar bristle brush, and do scalp massage.

Suggesting and feedback appreciated.

Could no shampoo help me?

I’ve damaged my hair a fair bit in the past by the way that I used to dry my hair. Now my hair gets quite frizzy and when I use shampoo or conditioner my hair either feels super fine or very straw like.

The sides and back of my hair can be quite coarse and thick but the top is usually thinner. Could no shampoo help my hair build up more thickness to it and be healthier?

Shedding Hair

It's been about two weeks since I started no poo and it's going relatively well, but I noticed while brushing my hair today that I shed more hair than usual. It's nothing alarming but I wanna know if it's normal or if it happened to any of you guys.

Should I use different brushes before and after showering?

So I’ve been doing no shampoo or conditioner, just washing with water every day.

I’ve been trying to come up with a routine.

Would it make sense to use a boar bristled brush before showering, to distribute oil, and then shower, and scritch my hair under water (so basically going in circular motions with my finger tips to remove oil) and then after I get out, dry my hair and use a different brush to style my hair with?

Would that make sense? Because the brush I’m using prior to showering would be dirtier, right?

So I shouldn’t use the same brush after showering to style my hair?

Also which brushes would you guys use - would a BBB be good for deranging hair before shower and then something like a wide tooth comb be good for after shower to just like make my hair neater/style it?

no baking soda but i have baking powder

i know baking powder has some other things mixed in it but its still soda bicarbonate.. would it fuck up my hair if i used baking powder? also i know its not for all hair types my hair is straight (literally as straight as it can be maybe a slight wave here and there) and its also dry. i wanna use soda b. to get rid of dandruff because i have a dry scalp and someone said that soda b. can help with cleaning the scalp and stuff

edit: (additional info) ive had dandruff / dry scalp problems ever since i was in like 3rd / 4th grade and im in high school now (almost 17 yrs old) so i really for once would love to get rid of dandruff its so annoying and i feel so gross because of it

Many questions about the science of sham/nopoo.

Some context to understand my questions: I have shortish hair and a beard and I just want to be like a cat, naturally clean, mostly to get out of the seborrhoeic dermatitis - detergent cycle (as my fungi are probably ketoconazole-proof by now anyway). I'm starting week 2 of daily hard-water only washing. So far so stable, dealing with the wax with mild dry brushing and ignoring, dealing with the eternal flakes in my beard by removing them by hand until seborrhoea hopefully stops and malassezia starves out.

  1. Where's the science for all this? Why can't I find a professional scientist that made experiments on this to determine the truth in all our amateur scientific experimenting? The few experts I've found are agnostic or talk with such bias it's ridiculous. So have any of you found some paper that attempted to shed light into the shampoo vs prior/minimal grooming methods?
  2. From the past 2 days of reading about this subject, it feels like the conspiracy possibility has some credence to it. That there is at least a little pressure applied to academia and the media not to go against the status quo and at least remain agnostic. What do you know about this and why is it so little discussed?
  3. The sebum regulating mechanism is a mystery to me. Apparently, corporal skin likes a 5 day build up of sebum then stops. Assuming it's the same for the scalp, what could the mechanism be? And do any of the nopoo methods rely on deceiving this mechanism?
  4. Since we wash with warm water and our scalp/hair is covered in hydrophobic oil, what exactly is the water dissolving? I'd tend to say "nothing", so why can't the mechanical removal of dead skin/dirt be accomplished 100% dry like cats? Thus avoiding wax btw. What's the water doing for us?
  5. To begin with, if the water IS removing oil, doesn't that defeat the purpose of building up oil? Same question for all the alternate wash products, or even the mechanical/dry cleaning and preening. From here, it looks like preening/brushing is just removing oil from that 5-day stock on the scalp to distribute it on the hair for no other reason than to protect the hair with oil, which is good, but also removing oil build up, thus prolonging the transition.
  6. In other words, if we are removing oil, what's the difference with shampoo. And if we're not, what's the difference with not washing. If the answer is that with water we're removing flakes/dirt but not oil, how does water manage to discriminate?
  7. What does this "moving of the oil", accomplished by massage, warm water or preening/brushing, really mean? Why would "moving" it prevent bacterial development? Why do the bacteria care about the morphological state or location of the oil? From here, it sounds like more removing of oil from scalp, to starve bacteria, instead of letting it be.
  8. So far there seems to be ambivalence on the attitude towards the oil on the scalp and whether it must sit there to prevent the glands overproducing and the idea that oil sitting will cause bacterial odor and worse problems like hair loss. Thanks for clarifying if there is in fact no contradiction.

Other questions :

Why is wax considered to dry hair but not oil if both are a hydrophobic coating?

Why 4 months of transition? Is this the time needed for the flora to balance? Or for the sebaceous glands to get weaker from so little exercise? Any suspected prevalent reason?

My scalp oil levels during this transition will get so high, how common are seborrhoeic dermatitis complications during this phase?

Thank you. As far as I'm concerned, shampoo just sounds like understudied capitalist bloat and I'm getting rid of it no matter what.

Best hair oil to moisturize the tips?

I’ve been water only for a month and it’s doing wonders for my hair. Only issue is where I’m still growing out my balayage from last year. The colour treated hair is super dry and I think I need some sort of moisture. I’d love to hear recommendations for hair oil or even silicone-free conditioner.

I've noticed dandruff flakes near my hairline for the first time about 6 months go, as the flakey part was really small about 1/2 inch I didn't give much attention

I finally noticed that the dandruff flakes part increasing near my hairline.

The hairline is the only part of the scalp which has this issue. (as of now)

The redness near the dandruff flakes happened because I'm plucking the dandruff flakes because it's very itchy

I wash my hair every day and shampoo every alternate day

  1. does anyone have a similar issue
  2. is this scalp psoriasis or seborrheic dermatitis?
  3. Will NoPoo help ?
  4. I got a dermatologist appointment after 3 weeks, should be worried enough to go to urgent care?
  5. I use dove Intensive repair as shampoo and do not use conditioner. Should I use something else?
  6. Any off the counter stuff/home remedies I can try before the doctor's appointment?

How do people like Sam Zia do nopoo?

He claims to not use shampoo but also uses texture powder, pomade and sea salt spray daily, but how does he wash it out with just water? He claims he transformed his hair from flat and straight to textured just by not shampooing.
