About New York

New York is a state in the Northeastern region of the United States. New York is the 27th-most extensive, the fourth-most populous, and the seventh-most densely populated of the 50 United States. New York is bordered by New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south and by Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont to the east. The state has a maritime border with Rhode Island east of Long Island, as well as an international border with the Canadian provinces of Ontario to the west and north, and Quebec to the north. The state of New York is often referred to as New York State, so as to distinguish it from New York City.

What about New York City is so great?

So, I'm a native New Yorker and I constantly hear people saying "it's the greatest city on earth", which leaves me puzzled. Would someone with a similiar view please explain? Is it the friendly people? Northern hospitality?Crowds? Delays? Safety? The wonderful public transportation system? Affordability? Struggling to understand.

Do New Yorkers give land use acknowledgments?

I’m from NY and lived there for 24 years. I then moved to OR. Recently, I noticed that if I’m attending a workshop for work, a city counsel meeting, or really any kind of organized gathering, the speaker will begin their presentation by acknowledging that we are on land that once belonged to specific Native American nations.

Is this just a West Coast thing, or have they been doing this in NY too?

Croton Point Camping/Sleepy Hollow trip

Heading to Croton Point SP to go camping this weekend, and have some different things scheduled for Sleepy Hollow & Tarrytown.

Having never been to the area, we're thinking our family of 4 (kids 14 & 7) are going to use the Metro North that's located right outside the campground to hit the different town stops.

My questions is the viability of using bicycles in that area, as opposed to walking. One of the kids being 7, I wasn't sure about bike lanes/traffic speed that'll be in place this weekend. We can certainly walk, but I know the bikes would make it easier and the kids would enjoy it even more.

How well known is fusion voting in NYS?

Are you familiar? Have you ever voted for a major party candidate on a minor party line?

For those who aren't familiar, it allows minor parties to nominate a major party candidate and vote on their party ballot line. Ex: voting for Kamala Harris on the Worker Families Party line. It prevents the spoiler effect while still giving you a chance to vote for the party that represents your interests. It's only really a thing in NY and CT nowadays but used to exist across the country.

Horror Movies Set In New York

With Halloween approaching, I'd share a project I've been working on for a few years, recording the locations of horror movies around the country and the world.

I am a big fan of horror and am a weird pedantic person who likes to make lists, and while people on r/horror don't seem to be as interested in this, I figured the state subreddits might. Especially if any of you are looking for new movies to watch this month.

You can check out my raw data here, or check out a more visually pleasing Letterbox list I made of New York's horror movies here.

Now to be clear about my methodology in how I organize these movies. These are organized by where they are SET not necessarily by where they are SHOT. Example: Most of the Friday the 13th movies are not shot in NJ, but they are all classified as set in NJ because in-universe that is where they take place. In cases where the film's setting is not outright stated, I used context clues such as license plates, driver's licenses, newspapers, references to cities, and so on. While I did take into account where the movie was filmed, I tried not to use that as definitive evidence (there is a reason why the tropes California Doubling and the Mountains of Illinois exist).

I go into more of the breakdown of movies in this post on r/horror if you are interested.

I have recorded 404 horror movies set in New York, placing the state at #2 in state rankings

According to IMDB, this makes the top 15 New York horror movies:

  1. Black Swan (2010)
  2. Rosemary's Baby (1968)
  3. King Kong (1933)
  4. The Fall of the House of Usher (2023)
  5. Ghostbusters (1984)
  6. Get Out (2017)
  7. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1949)
  8. Wait Until Dark (1967)
  9. American Psycho (2000)
  10. Saw (2004)
  11. Seconds (1966)
  12. A Quiet Place (2018)
  13. The Devil's Advocate (1997)
  14. Jacob's Ladder (1990)
  15. Sleepy Hollow (1999)

I hope you like this, and if you have any more suggestions or corrections you want me to make, please comment. You can also look at the lists for other states and countries here.

Dog Bite Nassau County

A neighbors unleashed dog ran up and bit me, while I was walking- I didn't see him behind a tree. Broke the skin and I got a prescription for antibiotics from a City MD. Owner was at the front porch and managed to run up and get the dog off me.

Neighbor is being cooperative and apologetic (provided proof of rabies vaccination so no need for rabies shot on my end, thankfully) and is offering to cover medical expenses, but obviously I want him to take action to ensure this doesn't happen again. He literally lives next door to a little girl who I always see playing in her front yard. Easily could have attacked her and it could've turned out much, much worse. While I was at the urgent care they had me fill out Nassau County's Department of Health Animal Bite report. Do I need to also file a report with the police? Has anyone else had experience with this?

edit: After calling the Department of Health, they transferred me to my town's precinct. When I asked if I needed to file a police report, the guy on the line told me they would have if I had called at time of incident and they picked me up in their ambulance (like I'm gonna pay $500 for a ride to get antibiotics...), but if I filled out the DOH form then they'll handle it from there. If anyone thinks this isn't the right course of action though let me know.

There are just 30 days to go until Election Day. Important links and FAQs

It’s important to remember it even if you don’t think the Presidential Election will be that close here in New York, plenty of other races that are as important or even more important may very well be close. Every member of the House of Representatives is up for election, as are all members of the State Assembly and State Senate.

FAQs:

Q: Is it too late to apply to vote/for a mail-in ballot?

A: No, you still have time. The last day to register to vote in New York is Saturday, October 26. That is also the last day for your county’s Board of Elections to receive an application for a mail-in ballot either through the online portal or by mail, they will continue to accept applications in-person until Monday, November 4.

Q: What are the two types of mail-in ballots?

A: Starting this year there are two kinds of mail-in ballots in New York. The kind that has existed for many years are the Absentee Ballots and the new one introduced in 2024 is the Early Mail Ballots. Both ballots are perfectly identical, the only difference is in the application process: Absentee Ballots require an explanation as to why you need it, including a permanent illness or disability meaning you’ll always receive a ballot for any election you’re eligible to vote in, while Early Mail Ballots don’t require any explanation but will always expire at the end of the calendar year.

Q: If I already have an Absentee Ballot application on file do I need to also apply for an Early Mail Ballot?

A: No. Under New York State Law, if you have an application already on file and you send in a new application then the new application automatically cancels the application already on file.

Q: I recently moved. Do I have to update my information?

A: Oftentimes after someone moves within New York State and does a transaction with the DMV that information gets forwarded to the Board of Elections, but it is still important that you check to make sure all of your information is up-to-date and that you are all set to vote. The deadline to change your address with the Board of Elections is Monday, October 21.

Q: What if I don’t like the candidate for my party for one of the offices? Do I have to vote for them?

A: In a general election like the one coming up in November you are allowed to vote for any candidate, regardless of their party or yours. If you are a registered Democrat and want to vote for a candidate on the Conservative line you are more than welcome to do so. The same is true for registered Republicans voting for Democratic candidates, Conservatives voting for Working Families, etc. The only time your party affiliation restricts what candidates you’re allowed to vote for is during a primary election.

Q: Is my vote secret?

A: Yes. While it is true that whether or not you voted in a particular election is publicly-accessible information, who you voted for is not. In fact, once your ballot is cast and counted there is no way to tie that ballot back to you.

Q: Do I need to have ID to vote?

A: Generally speaking, no. When you register to vote you are asked to provide either or both of your driver license number and the last four digits of your Social Security Number. If you do not provide either, or your information does not match in the state system, you may be asked to provide proof of identity when you go to vote for the first time, however most people do not have to worry about this. You can avoid this by making sure you update your voter registration information ahead of the registration deadline and include your DMV# or last 4 of your SSN.

Q: If I’m not asked to provide ID, how do they know it’s me when I go to vote in-person?

A: When you go to vote, the table inspectors will ask you for some information, including your name, date of birth, and address. They will then ask you to sign something so that they can compare your signature to the one they have on file for you. If your signature has changed, or you are not sure if you have a signature on file, please update your voter registration and be sure to include your signature.

Q: Can I do in-person Early Voting and where can I go to do it?

A: New York State does offer in-person Early Voting. The first day is Saturday, October 26 and it then runs every day until Sunday, November 3. You can vote at any Early Voting location in the county you are registered to vote in. For Early Voting times and locations for your county, please check with your county’s Board of Elections.

Q: What is on my ballot this year?

A: Every ballot in New York State will have at least the following races on it this year:

  • Electors for President and Vice President of the United States
  • United States Senator
  • State Supreme Court Justice
  • Representative in Congress
  • State Senator
  • Member of State Assembly
  • Proposal One, and Amendment to the State Constitution

There will also be other offices on your ballot in addition to these. For candidates for these races and the other races, and to see exactly what contests will be on your ballot, please contact your county’s Board of Elections.

Q: How important is it to vote in this election?

A: While it may not seem like New York is that important for the Presidential Election, your vote is still extremely important. In New York State alone there are at least 5 congressional districts that will be close, and because there are so many in just this state it is entirely possible that New York decides control of the US House of Representatives. Each of those races will likely be very close, as many of them were won in 2022 by just a few hundred to a few thousand votes. There will also be state- and local-level races on your ballot that will likely be very competitive, as well as propositions on the back of your ballot that will need everyone to vote on them. While it is your right to do so, voting only for President and leaving the rest of your ballot blank only makes it easier for fewer people to decide who is going to represent you.

Is it normal to walk around in costume all day on Halloween?

H!i 👋🎃

I'm visiting America for the first time ever (from Europe) to attend a big concert on Halloween in NYC. I'd like to do some touristy stuff during the day, as well as eating and grabbing coffee etc. Would it be okay to do that in costume on Halloween day or is that weird? I won't have time to get dressed up otherwise! I'll be with a friend so that's less weird. And I'm just going as Elvira.

I ask because it would be weird to do that where I live but Halloween is absolutely not a big deal here.

NY school bus law - Pulled over

NYS. Failed to stop for a school bus and got pulled over. There were busses around but I genuinely missed seeing one stopped and signaling. I asked the cop where it happened at but he wouldn’t say. Is there proof that they show in court or am I expected to just plead guilty?

New vehicle registration- Q about vehicle inspection

I recently moved to NY and have to get my vehicle registered. Can I use my NYS vehicle inspection from Sept 6 if my DMV appt is on Oct 2? Online I keep reading that renewals require an inspection once every 12 months but I'm not sure if I need a more recent inspection for a new registration. Thank you.

EDIT

Update! They told me I can use my inspection from last month because it’s linked to my VIN and I have the official inspection sticker on my windshield

I am screwed on PFL, right?

I will keep this short. My wife was a bit over two months pregnant when the business I did the books for was sold to new owners. They had a large accounting team in place for their collection of businesses, had no use for me, and let me go. It has taken another month to land a comparable job and I don't start it for a few more weeks. I will have been there for under six months by a wide margin when our fourth and last child is born.

I will need to use unpaid leave supplemented with whatever little PTO I have accrued to be home with her. I would want to be regardless, but she will need to have a c-section due to how the previous births were and won't be able to care for everyone physically. I know I will able to do that, but I got screwed out of actually getting Paid Family Leave because of shit timing, right? There is no loophole or safety net for situations like this, correct?

Thanks in advance.

Decedent of Thieves

Okay so there's a notorious building in New York (247 Mulberry Street) that used to be a very well known social club for mobsters (started as a social club for a Prohibition gang then another mobster owned it, Lucky Luciano used to go there, John Gotti lived above it and was wiretapped, etc). It became a shoe store I believe in the 90s/early 2000s and then in 2009 it became a store called Descendent of Thieves, which seems to be an underground male clothing brand.

Apparently the brand's name is inspired by the designer Dres Ladro (Ladro translating to "Thief" from Italian). I'm not sure where the brand actually started (if it was this 247 Mulberry location in 2009 or if there was another location beforehand) but I do know it was founded/created in New York City and that there's another location for them too (203 Bleecker Street).

My thing is, does anyone know about this brand and company behind it? I think choosing to name your brand after an Italian designer is fine but does anyone think it's a lil ironic that it just so happens correlates with the history of the place?

It started off as a social club for mobsters, during multiple generations (it opened in 1926 and was active to the 90s I believe, when they were able to infiltrate John Gotti), so many notable mobster and union figures were seen there. It started off as a Prohibition gang's social club and then became a regular mobster place. So in a way the building and history itself is a Descendent of Thieves. Does anyone think it was just a coincidence that the brand chose to make it after an Italian designer as well as looking at the buildings history?

Googling about this I really don't see much. There's a few things about the Ravenite social club (which is what it was called after the Prohibition era and ownership transferred) and information about the current business, but there's nothing really connecting these two together.

Hope everyone is doing good and that everyone in your lives is happy, healthy and alive. Enjoy your day and thanks for any information! Just genuinely curious about this!
