Mistborn era 2 question

edit:
It's been a long time since I read era 1, and I remember only vaguely.

What gender had you assigned to Harmony in your head, before the line:
"You can address me as Sir if you must."?

I'm german, and in german, "die Harmonie" is female, so I assumed, Harmony would be female.
Because that gender thing doesn't exist in English, I'm curious, what gender had you in your head, if any.

Mare

Have you ever doubted that Mare is dead? I'm think that it's very possible that Mare is alive, and Sanderson has been paving the path for the big plot twist with reasons below.

Mare never died: Mare is a Tin allomancer, but why choose Tin specifically ? Tin is one of the metals that is able to save you after passing out. It is very possible that when Mare passed out she just so happened to fall near some liquidfied investiture from the pits that is the Ruin's perpendicularity and woke up. In the Dragonsteel 10 years edition of TFE, it is changed that only Iron and Steel allomancies can break Atium, leaving room for Mare to use Tin without notice. Thus allowing her to escape.

Mare died but became a cognitive shadow and pinned herself back to the physical realm: This one is pretty straightforward, Mare is invested and died right next to a perpendicularity, note that I only state that she's pinned back because some WoB said that theres no cg of Mare hanging around. Another evidence of this is that Kelsier allegedly heard a voice telling him to "Survive" when he got out of the pits, as far as I'm aware, Preservation nor Ruin shouldn't have the power to even do that at the time, it seems more plausible to me that it was Mare trying to communicate with Kelsier as a cg.

So yeah that's pretty much what I've come up with, it's clear that Sanderson is avoiding to be clear with how Mare is doing and I'm really interested to see what he's planning to do with her. Let me know which theory you prefer though.

When I read this scene, I knew immediately I wanted to make a woodburn art/painting of it. Directly Inspired by Ben McSweeney’s art

I believe /u/inkthinker (is this your account??) made the digital art which is my direct reference for this, so more credit to them!

What twin born would you want to be?

As the title says what twin born would you want to be and what would you do with the powers. The context is that you aren’t on scadrial rather just here on earth and what would you pick to make your day to day life easier?

How do y’all feel that mistborn is going to be sci-fi?

Personally I’ve never read a story that switches genre’s from fantasy to sci-fi but I am curious in the case of mistborn and believe Brando Sando can pull it off. Got me thinking how y’all feel about it.

The Lost Metal - I missed something, I think

I finished The Lost Metal a few days ago. I loved it, it's my second favorite Mistborn book after Hero of Ages, probably. Anyway, at the end there, Harmony says that Wax probably breathed some Lerasium in the explosion, when they tried to split Harmonium, and Wayne says "makes sense". What does he mean by that? Is he referring to the fact that Wax could somehow see through the mists to see the ship? I can't think of anything else, so is that it, or did I miss something?

Just finished Book 1

So I just finished listening to The Final Empire a few days ago, and I loved it. I never really thought I'd enjoy a book that was like 70% preparation for the actual thing they need to do. But wow, it was a fun ride and I totally did not expect the ending.

So now, I'm 7 chapters into the Well of Ascension and I've got a question. If there's spoilers or it's resolved later you can just tell me that, but I find Vin's like hatred of the Kandra that's helped them a little jarring. I get it, it's some scary creature that can consume people and imitate their appearances. But Marsh is an Inquisitor now and Vin is just like "Hey Marsh, sup". So I think it's kind of silly she has such a problem with this thing eating corpses of people trying to kill her, but is fine killing a dog so that he can take that form. I get the line of thought that people are less likely to notice or pay attention to a dog, but her reasoning behind that seems to just be that she hates what this creature is.

Am I overthinking it, am I supposed to dislike him as much as her? It seems like her hatred of him is going to get in the way of him actually being helpful and useful to her.

Just finished Hero of Ages. Still had a question.

First off awesome series, I haven’t been interested in reading for probably the last 10 or so years. Got TFE from a friend recently and the rest is history. I guessed the Lord Ruler was a terrisman early on (pretty proud lol) but was completely blindsided by who the Hero of Ages actually was. I was sitting there laughing like a madman because I literally hadn’t even thought about it being him for some reason.

But basically I was taking some notes while reading and the only thing I didn’t check off was “why did vin get a weird feeling when she was going to meet hoid?”. So yea what’s up with that?

Seeker + TLR + F-word

So Brando confirmed that Seekers could sense Feruchemists using their powers. He also said that it would require training, as Seekers focus mostly on detecting Allomancy.

We take knowledge of Feruchemy for granted, but probably most of Seekers didn't even knew about Feruchemy existence.

But there is Lord Ruler who had hundred of years to practice, was top notch allomancer AND had great urge to find all active Feruchemists.

Making sure I understand this right

I'm not entirely sure I have the right of things with how the Feruchemical Medalions work. Here is my understanding:

  1. You can make an Unkeyed(?) Metalmind by storing Identity via Feruchemical Aluminum while storing another Feruchemical Power F. This Metalmind can be accessed by anyone with the matching Feruchemical Power F.
  2. You can make anyone into someone with the Feruchemical Power F by having someone who already has this Power store their Investiture via Nicrosil, while also storing their Identity via Aluminum, and having someone else tap the Nicrosilmind.
  3. You make a Medallion comprised of an Unkeyed Metalmind for Feruchemical Power F and an Unkeyed Nicrosilmind filled with the necessary Investiture to become a Ferochemist for Power F.

Is all of this right? Also if I understand this correctly you will always need someone with at least 3 Feruchemical Powers; The Power you want to store and access, Aluminum to store Identity and Nicrosil to store Investiture. The only way to achieve this currently(Era 2, no full Feruchemists) is with Hemalurgy correct? So the best way to make a Medallion that grants multiple Feruchemical Powers would be to have a Ferring of either Aluminum or Nicrosil, then spike them with the other more or less permanently and spike them with whatever Power F you want to create a Medallion for, switch the Power Spike and repeat.

So I dont get why the Bands of Mourning are such a big deal. Yes they also give the Allomantic Powers, but those should be just as easy to create a Medallion for. The Southerners had knowledge of these things for a long time, so why not just create their own Bands?

An odd theory of a possible power overlap

Ive an odd idea that uses F. Duralumin alongside A. Nicrosil or A. Chromium.

Now its gonna get weird, i know, stick with me. So we know that some different combos of misting and ferring can have some strange but powerful uses. Examples being things like wax tapping weight, getting titanically heavy and shoving on things with steel or storing weight while in flight to move faster. Or wayne using a speed bubble while storing health to essentially store or use health at a rate significantly faster than they should be able to to, letting him be more efficient and such things. I discuss these things to lay the groundwork of strange overlaps that arent immediately visible.

Now, what i think might be possible, a big maybe, is the ability to store connection to someone, and then tap it, and burn nicrosil or chromium to leech or burst at a farther range if theyve been close to the person. Obviously more useful as a booster to boost your allies.

A second, far less likely thing is being able to do something with F. Aluminum. Using a lot at once to gain so much identity that you can perceive everything around you as part of you. Eveything that touches you being part of you to extend your touch. I think this is a lot less likely than the F. Duralumin idea.

Lmk what yall think.

Im also curious about yalls thoughts on otherfun combos like maybe A. pewter and F. Steel, letting them store speed faster than most and the biggest weakness of steel is the limit of how hard tou can hit without obliterating yourself in the collision, which pewter helps with.

Question about The Lord Ruler

I was rereading TFE, and noticed the Chapter 14 epigraph:

“Sometimes I wonder if I’m going mad. Perhaps it is due to the pressure of knowing that I must somehow bear the burden of an entire world. Perhaps it is caused by the death I have seen, the friends I have lost. The friends I have been forced to kill. Either way, I sometimes see shadows following me. Dark creatures that I don’t understand, nor wish to understand. Are they, perhaps, some figment of my overtaxed mind?”

Are these “dark creatures” that he sees a result of him seeing into Shadesmar? Are they either Cognitive Shadows or travelers that he’s seeing, or are these spren or a Scadrian equivalent? It just seems oddly similar to the main Truthwatchers’ (e.g. Shallan) comments about seeing Cryptics.

Listening to hero of ages

I’ve reached the chapter where spook is talking to the citizen’s sister after she’s imprisoned.

I’m having a lot of fun figuring things out, this I love about Sanderson’s world building, you learn more about the rules and as you go on you can look back and theorize.

Ever since ruin and hemaleurgy/lurgy? spikes were explained I’ve been convinced that Rin’s voice was ruin, and that reveal just came in the cave with Vin.

Alternatively there was a mention last book of Zane having a spike and he was always hearing voices.

Vin seems to think ruin can hear her thoughts in opposition to what the lord ruler had written, I think this is because her earring is a spike, she’s heard ruin for the whole trilogy pretty much, maybe she hasn’t gone crazy because it’s a small spike and because she removes it periodically?

Before we gained info on spikes we were treated to the whole spook/pewter situation, and there he mentioned something briefly about having a chip of metal lodged in one of his wounds, I thinks this is also a spike granting him pewter abilities and ruin posing as Kelsier to him.

Beyond the random predictions, I’m really enjoying Elend’s (Elden sometimes apparently) growth and how strong he’s gotten, great stuff at the village versus the Koloss.

I also like that Sett is getting a bit deeper as a character but I’m not expecting much more.

This sequence of events is heartbreaking

I’m specifically referring to Preservation’s final interactions with Kelsier and Elend. This post is gonna be part-theorycrafting, part-praise. RIP Leras, He did his best. He did what Ruin either could not or was no longer able to. He heard the thoughts of all humans. He listened to the hearts of men. Leras hoped and trusted in humanity and it paid off 😭😢🫶🏾💔

I have theories on why he interacted the way he did with Kelsier and Elend. Also, reading these passages again makes me tear up.

Leras’ death in the Cognitive Realm. Leras didn’t know if the atium in the Pits of Hathsin would be burned off by the atium Mistings. He didn’t know if before the Well’s next cycle he would survive the mental decay or Ruin’s attempt to Splinter Preservation. He even disagrees with Rashek’s actions.

I theorize Leras knew three things needed to happen for the atium Mistings and The Hero of Ages to finally occur: 1) Rashek needed to die, 2) the atium in the Pits of Hathsin needed to be “destroyed,” and 3) The Shard needed to survive Ruin’s direct attacks and get to Vin. 1 is impossible without a proper rebellion (Kelsier’s persistence) and sufficient Allomantic power (Vin drawing the Mists). 2 is impossible without someone with the drive to accomplish such a ballsy move. 3 is tricky because Leras’ mind is so frayed, so he likely needed a middleman to pass the Shard onto Vin.

I think Leras saw into the future at some point, and came to the conclusion that Kelsier might be the person for the job. So in Kelsier’s darkest moment - on the night of Mare’s death - he Snapped Kelsier and commanded him to Survive. Maybe gave him metal reserves to burn. I think Leras deliberately bestowed the power of Allomancy to Kelsier and inspired him to escape the Pits; to become the Survivor of Hathsin and fulfill the next steps of the plan. Much like how Kelsier himself told Spook to Hope and keep moving, or commanded him to Survive, or brought him into a vision. Kelsier did all that to accomplish a precognitive plan to encourage Marsh to rip out Vin’s earring; thus allowing Vin to take up the Mists and Shard.

I think Leras pulled the same con on Kelsier, but on a grander scale.

Whatever the reason, Kelsier felt the end like a long, drawn-out sigh. It sent a chill up his spine, and he scrambled to find a thread of Preservation. They had been all over the ground earlier in his trip, but now he found nothing.

“Fuzz!” he screamed. “Preservation!”

Kelsier… The voice vibrated through him. Goodbye.

“Hell, Fuzz,” Kelsier said, searching the sky. “I’m sorry. I…” He swallowed.

Odd, the voice said. After all these years appearing for others as they died, I never expected… that my own passing would be so cold and lonely…

“I’m here for you,” Kelsier said.

No. You weren’t. Kelsier, he’s splitting my power. He’s breaking it apart. It will be gone… Splintered… He’ll destroy it.

“Like hell he will,” Kelsier said, dropping his pack. He reached inside, gripping the glowing orb filled with liquid.

It’s not for you, Kelsier, Preservation said. It’s not yours. It belongs to another.

“I’ll get it to her,” Kelsier said, taking up the sphere. He drew in a deep breath, then used Nazh’s knife to smash the orb, spraying his arm and body with the glowing liquid.

Lines like threads burst out from him. Glowing, effulgent. Like the “lines from burning steel or iron, except they pointed at everything.

Kelsier! Preservation said, his voice strengthening. Do better than you have before! They called you their god, and you were casual with their faith! The hearts of men are NOT YOUR TOYS.

“I…” Kelsier licked his lips. “I understand. My Lord.“

“Do better, Kelsier, Preservation commanded, his voice fading. If the end comes, get them below ground. It might help. And remember… remember what I told you, so long ago… Do what I cannot, Kelsier…

SURVIVE.

The word vibrated through him, and Kelsier gasped. He knew that feeling, remembered that exact command. He’d heard that voice in the Pits. Waking him, driving him forward.

Saving him.

Kelsier bowed his head as he felt Preservation fade, finally, and stretch into the darkness.

Preservation’s death in the Physical Realm. This is much simpler, I think.

I think he probably wanted to give Elend hints of his plan for the atium Mistings. I think he was pointing northeast to an area near Luthadel - the Pits of Hathsin and the Homeland. The waves he gave for the questions on the mists and the pointing to Elend’s metals… Leras was giving hints that the Mists were Snapping people into Allomancers.

His final, hesitant wave. The sign that beating Ruin and surviving is a tiny possibility.

The mist spirit evaporating… that’s the Survivor taking up the power to give to the Ascendant Warrior. Preventing the power from being Splintered. Freeing the god’s frayed mind from its timeless burden.

The creature fell still. It was getting harder and harder to see it in the mists. Elend flared his tin, but that didn’t make the creature any more distinct. It seemed to be… fading.

“Where was it you wanted me to go?” Elend asked, more for himself than expecting an answer. “You pointed… east? Did you want me to go back to Luthadel?”

It waved with half-enthusiasm again.

“Do you want me to attack Fadrex City?”

It stood still.

“Do you not want me to attack Fadrex City?”

It waved vigorously.

Interesting, he thought.

“The mists,” Elend said. “They’re connected to all this, aren’t they?”

Waving.

“They’re killing my men,” Elend said.

It stepped forward, then stood still, somehow looking urgent.

Elend frowned. “You reacted to that. You mean to say they aren’t killing my men?”

It waved.

“That’s ridiculous. I’ve seen the men fall dead.”

It stepped forward, pointing at Elend. He glanced down at his sash. “The coins?” he asked, looking up.

It pointed again. Elend reached into his sash. All that was there were his metal vials. He pulled one out. “Metals?”

It waved vigorously. It just continued to wave and wave. Elend looked down at the vial. “I don’t understand.”

The creature fell still. It was getting more and more vague, as if it were evaporating.

“Wait!” Elend said, stepping forward. “I have another question. One more before you go!”

It stared him in the eyes.

“Can we beat it?” Elend asked softly. “Can we survive?”

Stillness. Then, the creature waved just briefly. Not a vigorous wave—more of a hesitant one. An uncertain one. It evaporated, maintaining that same wave, the mists becoming indistinct and leaving no sign that the creature had been there.

I don’t know why Preservation decided to use his last bit of life appearing to Elend during his trek back to Fadrex. From what I understand, Elend didn’t really learn that much from the meeting. By then, of course, Preservation was but a shadow of himself—and that shadow was under immense destructive pressure from Ruin.

Perhaps Preservation—or, the remnants of what he had been—wanted to get Elend alone. Or, perhaps he saw Elend kneeling in that field, and knew that the emperor of men was very close to just lying down in the ash, never to rise again. Either way, Preservation did appear, and in doing so exposed himself to Ruin’s attacks. Gone were the days when Preservation could turn away an Inquisitor with a bare gesture, gone—even—were the days when he could strike a man down to bleed and die.

By the time Elend saw the “mist spirit,” Preservation must have been barely coherent. I wonder what Elend would have done, had he known that he was in the presence of a dying god—that on that night, he had been the last witness of Preservation’s passing. If Elend had waited just a few more minutes on that ashen field, he would have seen a body—short of stature, black hair, prominent nose—fall from the mists and slump dead into the ash.

As it was, the corpse was left alone to be buried in ash. The world was dying. Its gods had to die with it.

However, putting these plans into motion isn’t the same as knowing they’ll come true. Leras probably didn’t know if Kelsier would succeed in destroying the Pits’ atium or in giving the Shard to Vin. He certainly didn’t know if Elend would succeed in leading the atium Mistings to the Homeland.

Futuresight in the Cosmere, or at least the Hail Marys and fragile distant possibilities in Leras’ plan, seem to be split into maybes because of free will. If the figures in The Plan made the “wrong” decisions, made different decisions, or lost hope in the world, Ruin would’ve easily won. Their “right” decisions required them to just… live their lives. If Rashek, Vin, and Sazed lived different lives their Connections to the Shards might’ve been completely different from what we know.

Leras listened the hearts of men, gave them nudges, and hoped for the best outcomes. That’s all.

Abby and Brittany have separate stomachs! 👀

They have their own stomachs! Does this mean they could be two different kinds of mistings? One a Lurcher and the other a Coinshot? One a rioter and the other a soother? Or whatever other cool combos in a character physically like Brittany and Abby…

Which combo would you like to see? Could they also be separate types of ferrings? They share so much of the same body but they do have separate identities?

A character like them would be fascinating!!

Predictions for the Hero of Ages

First of HOLY SHIT the twist at the end was incredible and I knew that the Deepness was a shard Adonalsium (lucky guess). Im also guessing that the mist creature is a spren the only thing I’m wondering is why it manifests as mist when it appears to be opposed to the Deepness which manifests as mist also? I also assume that the Shard is Ruin because I’ve seen a list of the different shards and one of them was Ruin and Alendi’s quote about how it simply destroys because thats its nature reminds me of Odium.

Started my second re-read

Hey. Yesterday, I started my second Mistborn re-read. Reading Final Empire for the third time, it still feels new to me. I already know what happens, but I'm still getting that sense of " No way I'm stopping now, I want to find out what happens next. " I'm still picking up on little details that I never noticed before. The re-read also marks the progress I've made in my own life. When I read it first two years, I only had the one friend, who means the world to me. When I did my re-read a year ago, I had made a lot of progress with them. And now that I'm doing this year's re-read, I've made a lot of other friends. So, as strange as this might sound, when I didn't have many people in my corner, I feel like Brandon was one of those few.

Completed reading "Mistborn: the Final Empire", where is the membership card?

To be honest, this is the first fiction book that really get me going. I was a passionate self-taught programmer obsessed with programming, but his book really distracted me from the obsession for the past 4 days. It took me around 28 hours of reading time, it is worth it.

Ostensibly, the writer using the word "apprehensive" that it carved into my brain.

I also checked out is there any game related to it. There is one but there is no recent news about it, too bad.
