Hi Folks!
Has anyone ever car camped for a night at Newfound Gap before?
https://maps.app.goo.gl/UHX4w2KZr1U7MGWZA
It's a great overlook and was trying to catch a sunrise from here.
I don't know if park rangers, cops, etc. heavily monitor the location.
Thanks in advance for your time!
I have been most places down jn Ga except for Yonah surprisingly. I just got finished with a few trails on Blood mountain, which isn’t too far. I know for sure I don’t want to go in the summer. I was considering winter but I was worried about ice. TIA
Has somebody been to yonah mountain after the hurricane?

We just moved to GA near columbus and want to do some car camping. we have a rooftop tent. any recommendations?
Looking for location ideas for an overnight backpack trip. I’m planning an overnight trip in December for a Boyscout troop, probably 10 kids who have never backpacked. Original idea was to go up to Springer Mtn. and do a loop. Then I realized some of these kids are small and couldn’t carry enough gear to keep themselves warm if it’s cold in the mountains.
Does anyone have any suggestions maybe south of Atlanta where we can have a 5 or so mile hike out and back and stay overnight. Appreciate any help.
What’s the weather like in northern Georgia in the winter? I’d like to be there Dec-Feb in my campervan but how often should I worry about my water freezing? 🚐
Of course I looked it up but what I hear from actual people seems really conflicting about the weather.
Also wondering how the hiking is in the winter and how frigid it gets up in the mountains.
Thanks in advance!
I plan on taking my mom on her first backpacking trip to Providence Canyon. We are still in the very early planning stage. I have done a good bit of reading about it, most people say bring in all your water, that it can get muddy etc. I haven't seen any comments about human waste disposal. I am assuming it is a dig a hole and pack out your TP situation. Also haven't read anything about wildlife. I did a lot of backpacking out in Idaho, and you always had to have your food and stuff in a bear bag or similar things. What about here?
I’ve seen lots of people mention preacher for good view and relatively easy hike. Anything i should know before heading out? I have Alltrails and GaiaGPS downloaded already. I plan to car camp the night before and hike up in the dark to enjoy some tea on top of the mountain with a sunrise.

Planning on camping and bringing my telescope so I need I big open area with lots sky, I found this field through looking on google Earth. I emailed the forest service to see if I am allowed to camp in it but haven't heard back from them in a while. Can you disperse camp anywhere in the park or does it need to be at an actual camp site? On street view there are signs outside of the field that say "road closes" and one that is to blurry to see. Appreciate any help and I understand it is very specific problem. :). Also if you know of any open sky camp sites in north Georgia that might be better feel free to share!

Hi Outdoor lovers!
Am thinking of car camping (2 adults 1x 2yr old) and was looking for some tips.
Using a large SUV with 3rd row gone and 2nd row folded up so enough space for a full bed as reference.
I've gone camping as a teen and adult but main concern is warmth in a car camping situation for a toddler as Nov 2024 seems to be lows of 40-50s.
What are safe ways to keep toddler warm in a car camping situation for about 1 or 2 days?
Toddler can wear thick clothing and jackets so worried about sweating and possible diaper changes if needed at night.
I thought about getting a USB heated blanket.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
Hey y’all! I will be in the Helen area one night and Dahlonega area the next night in two weeks. I am looking for recommendations for primitive camping sites, especially as the hurricane hit part or NE GA recently. I am open to car camping sites (preferably on the less busy side) or hike-in sites. Any good recommendations would be much appreciated!
Me and my wife will be camping at Cloudland Canyon next month and staying at walk in campsite 17. Can anyone tell me how the walk is from parking to the campsite? We’re planning on bringing a wagon to help with transportation but we’re curious about the terrain on the trail itself. Also, are bears an issue?
Hello! First time camping in Georgia and we will be at Red Top Mountain in mid-December. Do we need to worry about bears and prep bear bags or canisters? Read that they're more common more north. Thank you!
Hi! We are beginner campers going to Vogel state park the first weekend of November. Is there anything we should keep in mind for gear (tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, etc.) at this time in the season?
Hey trying to go on a camping trip and do some bushwhacking to get to a cool spot. Im thinking somewhere in the Chattahoochee national forest. looking for a good spot to camp and have a nice view in the morning
First time at Cooper Creek. Great little campground. Trout were plentiful on 10/14/2024.
I stayed at backcountry site #4 this weekend, and I wanted to share what a great time I had.
The site is private, it has a new bear locker, and a creek runs through it.
My favorite feature is that it’s just 0.2 miles up trail to a beautiful overlook where I enjoyed the sunset.
I can’t recommend this site enough.
Anyone been on the Mt. Yonah trail sense Helene? I wanted to try it out this weekend, the website says its closed, but wanted to see if anyone had checked it out.
I recently got a roof top tent for my truck and want to start camping. Are there any good drive up / overlanding areas in or near Augusta?
Wife and I looking to do some basic tent camping sometime in November, only requirement for her is a toilet within walking distance, which I know eliminates most of the government run sites which close after October. Any private campsites or any others anybody aware of that are open in November that have facilities available?
I will be driving down from NC and get into the area late on Friday night. I am hoping to find a dispersed spot that we can just sleep in the car as we will be getting in so late, that I really don't want to have to pay for a spot at a campground. I'm seeing that a lot of areas are closed due to hurricane damage. We will only be staying one night and will be up early on Saturday. Will be spending most of our time around Sautee Nacoochee. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Hi! My fiance and I are planning a cabin trip for late December/early January. Is the Chattahoochee-Oconee national forest a good place to visit during this time for hiking? Will the waterfalls still be flowing? We were planning on staying in a cabin near Helen, Ga. Is Helen GA a good place to visit during New Years? We’re in our twenties and love the mountains and are also looking for a cozy christmas-y vibe. Thanks!
My boyfriend and I are trying to plan a last minute camping trip the 18th-20th and fort yargo state park is already booked out. We’re doing a group kayaking tour there on the 18th so we’d like to find somewhere to set up a tent close by. Is there any where else that you’d recommend camping? We’re from Oregon so we’re not super familiar with the area.
Hi! I work at a outdoor day camp in the Atlanta area, and we are looking for more locations to bring our campers on field trips! We have a pretty decent list, but I wanted to see if anyone has suggestions to help freshen things up and give us some new ideas.
Our after school program takes weekly hikes to nearby parks with kids ages 5-11. We’re looking for hikes that are relatively close to Atlanta (within 30ish mins) and are easy-moderate. Time is also more limited, so we’d prefer hikes that are shorter and take an hour or less to complete, but we can always turn around on the trail if we need to, so distance isn’t a total deal breaker.
We also run summer and school break programs, and we’re fine with a 1.5 hour drive! We’re also open to easy-difficult as we have campers ages 7-15 in different groups based on age during the summer. We love searching for critters, doing stream ecology, and often end the day with a nearby swim if possible.
Anywhere that’s got a lot of natural features, flora, or fauna to talk about, fun to explore, and will help keep these kids excited about nature and hiking would be great! We talk about LNT, especially as it comes to being respectful towards nature and other visitors, but they are still kids, so we try not to go places that are super crowded on weekdays since we don’t want everyone in the woods to have to listen to them or navigate around us.
Want to go camping with a group of 4 of my friends this weekend for the first but not really sure where we can go can anyone give any recommendations where we can set up tents and everything with some privacy?
