Is anyone else experiencing adult-onset food allergies?
I have not had any sensitivities to anything I have ever encountered until now (mid 20s). And to something I eat regularly: EGGS!
I have been eating two eggs everyday recently (for breakfast and a snack for afternoon tea at work) to satisfy my savoury cravings.
I have noticed itching and a bit of swelling around my lips, itching on my forearms, my FACE and my ears turn red.
I can't think of anything new I've been doing recently, but I can't help but think it might be the increased consumption of eggs.
Is anyone else experiencing this?
I’ve had a “sensitivity” to dairy most of my life which is now a full blown allergy. I went from stomach upset to throat closing up on me now. I was supposed to see my doctor the other day for a checkup but had to cancel because of a work emergency. Anyway, my question is, and I hope it’s not stupid is does anyone else forget to check ingredients, and what do/can you do when you do? Today was the second time this week where I had to eat on the run (I’m a busy lawyer and caregiver to a disabled husband) and didn’t pay attention to how something was prepared until I was sitting at my desk and started getting sick and had my throat feel like it was closing up. I took some Benadryl and it got better but the extreme nausea hasn’t gone away.
sometime in the last few months they changed their recipe. because of internet nonsense i'm having trouble finding an actual link (google shows info to me but if i click it says i can't access it).
sorry i can't provide concrete proof other than screen shots but google "domino's new tomato sauce ingredients" and you'll see some selections show up. According to the google AI "Tomatoes, Sugar, Salt, Garlic, Black pepper, Oregano, Basil, Chilli, Peppermint, and Citric acid".
also notable is that most of the crusts don't have palm, the deep dish crusts do, so know they're sharing an oven with palm if that's an issue for you.
it was one of my safe foods so i'm really angry right now (and itchy all over). Stay safe fellow allergy sufferers.
For personal reasons I can’t visit a specialist for this atm, when I can I definitely will do.
I have been struggling stomach wise a lot. I got diagnosed in 2021 with IBS. And prior to that a tumor (non cancerous) was found in the point where your stomach transforms in your bowl. All this caused and causes a lot of stomach problems and pains. And somethings just get worse. I think I am getting an intolerance towards Lactose, but I am not 100% sure of it. If I eat cheese I am fine, but when I eat creme fraiche, well instantly the lactose intolerance symptoms pop up. I won’t go fully in detail. But if you know you know.
For the past 24 h I ate pasta carbonara, this was my partner’s request. But after eating it the first time my stomach was getting in a lot of pain. My partner thought the bacon strips were undercooked, but I have eaten them raw before as well without issue. Perhaps the wheat / cereals in the pasta give off the same reaction ? But otherwise it is definitely the creme fraiche (I always check dates and use everything within it’s time limit, so everything was good to use) but it just got drastically worse. My partner knows I won’t eat carbonara, but is pretty concerned. I want to make a little diet for myself eating x product in a week so I can check where the extreme pain comes from. But I am a bit clueless where to start or how I can make it easier. If anyone knows something of has a little advice, i am all ears and thank you so much!
I never reacted to sesame before but my mother once read somewhere online or in a magazine that people with peanut allergies (like me) have a higher chance of also having sesame allergies. So she made me get a blood test done when I was in early middle school. I tested positive and I have avoided sesame ever since then because my mother never really questioned the lab results and erred on the side of causation.
I assumed I was allergic for years until I decided to take the test again a year or so ago. The lab mixed things up and tested me for a sunflower allergy by accident. You can imagine my surprise when I got a phone call telling me that I was allergic to sunflower (0.54 kU/L) and should then on avoid them, but in reality I eat products with sunflower very regularly and fare just fine.
So I told them that there must have been a mistake and that I wanted a sesame test done. I got my results back after having to do some more blood work and got my sesame numbers (1.04). But ever since then and the sunflower mishap, I have been wondering if I should do a food challenge at my allergist's given how blood tests are notoriously bad. I've never had straight up sesame before because it was never a part of my culture's diet, but I have had products that may contain it before getting tested as a kid. Even if I find out that I'm only mildly allergic and can eat things that "may contain traces of" sesame, it'd be a huge relief for me and open so many doors for foods I can eat.
So would you do it?
ETA: I've also tested positive for cashews (0.88 kU/L) but can eat them and cashew butter just fine
I have a nut allergy but it's been a long time since I have had a reaction. I can be in a room with nuts and I can sit next to someone eating nuts. But I just can't eat them. It has also been a long time since going to a doctor about my allergy. I start if a few days and don't know if I should work at crumbl cookie or not.
Long story short, I have a 17 month old who is only able to eat corn and drinks amino-acid based formula (diagnosed mill-allergy from 2 months old). We have tried numerous foods, you name it, nothing seems to be fine. He has reflux and has meds for it, no constipation, growth is good (thank you "milk"). Is there anyone who has experienced similar and what helped or any suggestions if this could all be some other disease?
We are using probiotics.
So I just went down a rabbit hole but I’m not getting concrete answers.
Background: I’ve never been tested but I always suspected I had a mild lactose or dairy intolerance just case sometimes I’d have diarrhoea and cramps after eating certain meals containing it.
I could always have pizza, cereal, etc. but then I would randomly eat a sandwich or pasta sauce and all hell would break loose in my stomach.
I hadn’t had a reaction in ages but I went to a restaurant today and got their spaghetti carbonara. While eating I started feeling itchiness on my arms and started scratching without noticing. By the end of the meal my arms were red and skin was raised where I had scratched. This usually happens where there are dust mites which I thought was weird, but it’s mostly just annoying so I let it go.
Then after a few hours I woke up with the most intense stomach cramps I’ve ever felt in my life. I went to the toilet and let’s just say I was fighting for my life for 40 minutes.
Thing is my partner and I shared the plate so I didnt think it was food poisoning. I figured this must be one of the times I’m getting a bad reaction to the cheese. I found another reddit post where someone mentioned cheese mites? They live on aged cheese and are usually harmless but can cause an allergic reaction. Which would make sense considering the urticaria episode. However I can’t find much other info at all about it! Anyone had similar experiences or even have other theories?
Appreciate it!
Hi guys,
I only had one allergic reaction to a medication I had headache and chest pain, the nurse turned off the medicine infusion and I felt better . I have a sever autoimmune disease
Recently when I eat nuts and some of my regular medications I get short of breath with no other symptoms, I check I my oxygen it’s normal, could it be allergy? If yes can it get severe to point of throat closing up within minutes without common symptoms like hives ect?
I don’t have money to see a doctor 😓
Jumping in here to give my experience with neffy. I was given my first in November and I have not been the same since. This was my first time ever receiving epinephrine and my allergist insisted we try this new drug after I reacted to the flu vaccine. After receiving it I experienced your typical adrenaline symptoms but that evening when it all wore off I had this rush of fluid run through my brain, I instantly felt nauseas it woke me up out of a dead sleep it happened twice. Next day I had this incredible eye pressure and head pressure that would not go away I was very fatigued. The allergist insisted this can’t be epinephrine. Few days go by I just feel like I am getting sick by Monday I am at my PC office explaining my symptoms driving was difficult just constant brain fog couldn’t see right etc by Wednesday I was driving and felt this pop in the front of my head I then this rush of warmth and pain to the back of my head I lost all range of motion I was trembling thought I was going to pass out her to call EMS. Went to ER they took blood did scans X-rays everything came back fine. Saw a bad neurologist who tried telling me it was anxiety but I cried insisting it wasn’t. My symptoms got worse, I kept having burning and tingling in my head, ringing in my ears, heart arythmias, tremors, nausea, stomach pains, hands arms legs feet would go numb, intense muscle spasms, I would get these sensations of impending doom and felt like I was going to pass out but I never would. I keep having vertigo like symptoms. Muscle aches, body aches, neck tension. I had an mri done of head and spine everything is fine. Finally found a neurologist who believes something more is happening and she tested me for vitamin deficiency and I was low in D and Iron she said these could cause my parathesis but I’m not totally convinced because I am on vitamin supplements and I am having more attacks. I also have felt like I have been going into seizure like states so we did an eeg. During the eeg I felt like I was being electrocuted even though they tell me there no electrical current, I know what I felt and I was incredibly dizzy and nausea after the fact. I was told I was having an anxiety attack. I've had anxiety my whole life I keep telling these doctors it's not anxiety I am feeling! Rheumatology tried telling me it’s fibromyalgia. I refuse to believe it. I am a healthy active 36 year old female who was in the gym multiple times a week after taking this stupid drug I am some days bed bound. It’s awful and I can’t find a single person who has gone through this yet because it’s so new. I have yet to receive answers from doctors or feel better. I have more tests and appointments coming up but I am still always pointing the finger back at this drug. And now I am in an incredible amount of medical debt over a nose spray that I wish I declined because i was responding very well to Benadryl during my reactions. They even said “you’re our Guinea pig” this is a new drug. If anyone has anything to share or knows anyone who may have gone through something similar please reach out!
Just wanted to say thanks for all the support on my last post! It’s been really great hearing from people who are using the list, and I made a few small tweaks based on what you all suggested (going to be adding a couple more requested allergens soon too).
If there’s anything else you’d like to see, let me know! Always happy to add things people might find useful, us allergy folks have to stick together :)
Also for anyone that missed the original post, I made a free tool for people to create lists of their allergies https://allergylist.org
After consuming a kiwi, my mouth and the surrounding area starts to feel a little prickly, and a tingling sensation is left on my tongue for a couple of minutes.
This happens with literally no other food item, just kiwis. I'm confused if it's normal or not? I'm getting so many mixed signals on Google.
I hope I'm not allergic; they're are my favourite fruit 😔
PLEASE HELP!! I developed an allergy to citrus when I was around 10 or 11. I’m 23 now and my allergy has just gotten worse. I’ve gone to the doctors and they’ve only recommended I use Kanka mouth pain liquid, and to mix milk of magnesia with Benadryl. It works but my allergies are becoming for sensitive. At first it was just fruits like oranges, lemons, pineapple etc. I could still eat apples, strawberries, bananas, grapes, watermelons lower acidic fruits. But recently I can’t even eat those anymore without triggering an allergic reaction I have to deal with Canker sores!! It’s very painful. I’ve completely cut out high acidic fruits in my diet now and I can’t only eat watermelons, grapes & apples in small servings. I also can’t have tomatoes, cucumbers, and pickles. I can have majority of vegetables. Another weird thing is that I can’t have any form of raw tomatoes. But I have pizza without any problems at all! My allergies are so on and off?! Anyone else have this same allergy or a similar reaction as mine? I typically get canker sores on my lips and tongue. Some the outside of tongue will look white as well. I’ll take any advice on how to manage a good diet, being more careful of citrus foods, and better ways to treat my reactions.
So I have a milk and peanut allergy. I use unsweetened almond milk and have no problem plus negative on allergy blood test for almond. Only mentioning to clarify since there's almond in this chocolate.
Any reason it would make my throat almost burn and feel dry? I took a benadryl because I was paranoid (also new to food allergies!)
I have eaten other dairy free /vegan chocolates and never had this reaction.
My allergies are flared due to weather change / rain in my town so that doesn't help as I've had drainage anyways so I'm wondering if my throat was just agitated and the chocolate didn't agree?
I take daily allergy meds for my seasonal stuff and benadryl is safe with it. It makes me drowsy but almost bed time anyways so figured better to be safe... maybe I'm just paranoid at this point.
Peanuts make it hard to swallow and breathing weird Milk response seems to vary from arms itching, tongue going numb, running nose, or tongue feeling swollen.
Anyone else allergic to black pepper?
Crossed off jo-jo's on my long list the other day, not tasting or even thinking it had black pepper until my throat started to swell.
It made me wonder if anyone else is allergic and what your symtpoms are.
Hi, I am in search of advice from people who had a similar issue with their kids or just have ideas on what could help.
Our 15 month old toddler has been having allergic reactions shortly since we introduced solids. He has confirmed allergies to eggs, fish, tree nuts and a bunch of other things.
He definitely has gut issues because he has not been digesting food well and what worries us most is that he has not been gaining weight and growing as much as he should.
He has been on the elimination diet for a number of weeks now and lives off Ripple milk, oatmeal, zucchini pancakes, pasta, some types of bread and turkey bacon. We try to remove any food that causes flushed cheeks, gut reaction and eczema. He is a very picky eater but we try to make his meals and snacks as calorie and nutrient dense as possible.
We did a poop test and all possible parasites etc. came back negative.
Our allergist has been cheerfully dismissive and we are on a waitlist for a couple of other doctors.
But what can we do besides eliminating all the foods that seem to bother him at this point?
Hey everyone,
My son is going to junior kindergarten next year. He is severely allergic to eggs, dairy, pecans and walnuts. The school (we are in Ontario, Canada) is telling me that they are nut-free and will not ban eggs or dairy in the classroom unless it is airborne. Can anyone share with me some insight on how their children function with their allergies in a classroom that has their allergens present?
Sincerely, an anxious mama :(
Hey friends, I've had a bad food allergy for almost 3 years now which has sent me to the hospital a few times due to anaphylaxis, I'm in line to get a allergy test done, but where I live it can take up to 24 months to see a specialist. Here's the following items I have reacted to in wondering if anyone has insights, any help appreciated. Also, sometimes I get stray hives when I eat food that I think is safe, but I'm not sure if it's related to the food or not...
Pizza, Burrito with white tortilla, Bacon and Egg Bagel, a Chinese meal (Orange chicken, Pork, Noodles, and egg roll (by far my worst reaction ever almost died)), Burger King burger, Beer
This makes me think it's a wheat allergy, but not every time I have wheat I get a reaction. I've completely cut it out now after my most recent hospital visit, but I still get the odd hive and flushed face as I've mentioned before.
Any help appreciated
Helllooo! I was wondering if anyone here had advice on finding a good protein powder without pea protein (I am deadly allergic to green peas, chick peas, anything-peas, lentils and peanuts). I’ve seen some hemp protein powder and rice protein powder, but that company also process pea protein :( I am lost, any advice helps.
Thank you!
Throwaway account because I find this embarrassing. I've had a severe peanut allergy for as long as I can remember and growing up my parents built up a fear based relationship around food for me. I credit them somewhat for never having a reaction except the one I had when I found out I was allergic. Due to the fact I was raised to fear any and all food I started having panic attacks at 17 every meal time. Doesn't matter what the food was or how many times I checked the ingredients it always made me on edge and panicky for an hour or two after eating everyday. At 20 I just completely stopped eating anything I didn't cook myself and stopped eating anywhere but my apartment with my EpiPens on the table. I ate the same thing 3 times a day for over a year and still felt like I was gonna have a reaction every time. I started having vivid nightmares in which I was having an allergic reaction at least 3 times a week starting at 22. I'm 25 now and its just gotten worse. Around a month ago my anxiety got so bad that I was eating once a day and having a panic attack every time. Recently I just stopped eating because Its easier than having daily panic attacks and I have become extremely underweight because of it. I just want to be able to eat without panic. The fear of allergic reaction Is something I think about from the moment I wake up to the moment I go to bed and its ruined my life.
Hi, does food allergies always mean anaphylactic shock will occur if you have a food allergy?
I have symptoms that are somewhat mild but definitely bother me. Like the back of my throat will itch, so will my tongue, chest tightening/shortness of breath and my hands will go numb sometimes?
I'm 24M. Pure vegetarian. No outside food, no fried food. Only simple homemade indian food. From last 3 years I have headache. Not severe not mild. After noticed everything I found certain foods are factor for headache like milk, pulses, lemon, tamarind (imli), pure chocolate, mustard seeds (Rai), dried Fenugreek leaves (kasuri methi), tomato, almonds, water soaked raisins, black pepper (Kali mirch), gooseberry (amla), onion, chickpeas (chana and chhola), pickle, porridge or lentil rice (khichadi), soy chunks, carom seeds, sesame seeds, chickpea flour, finger millet flour (Ragi aata), all vegetables in dinner creates headache. List is still increasing after try out new things. Not instant but for next day from morning or afternoon. In starting I took allopathic medicine for 2 years by neurosurgeon not one by two doctors. but now from 1 year taking ayurvedic medicines. 50% controlled but still getting it after eating these foods. Sometimes I can eat above foods, I don't get headache. But I don't know how why. In allopathic medicine I took topiramate 25mg for long time. Then in ayurvedic I'm taking shirahshuladi vajra ras tablets and sutsekhar ras tablets. Nothing else. And my eating time is fixed. Morning 7:30. Dummy Paratha (customised by mom, taste like Paratha but actually chapati) and curd. In lunch chapati and one vegetable curry at 12PM. 4PM snacks is random 4-5 biscuit. In dinner at 6:45PM white rice with minimal spices and lite chiwda of haldiram. Nothing else in a day. I'm student. No worries, no tension, no financial burden, no stress. Problem is I'm still getting headache sometimes more or less. I'm tired of it now. What should I do now?
I've got what I think are the weirdest food allergies ever. They don't really cause me any trouble given the nature, but I just saw a video (not important) that made me think about them so I thought I'd look them up. I've found exactly nothing on the subject.
I'm allergic to three very specific things:
Venison Rabbit Quail
That combination is bizarre. Three completely different kinds of animals. A large, hooved mammal, a rodent, and a bird.
I eat all other kinds of meat. Red, white, fish, you name it. I've even tried other exotic stuff like gator, and that's fine. Only these three.
I often suspected maybe it was what they had in common: all hunted in the wild. But then I've gotten contact contamination from venison that caused a reaction (Buccee's jerky...they make venison jerky and store/chop it using the same environs.) so I think that's ruled out.
Any ideas? It's not terribly difficult to avoid these three meats, but I'd still love to know why I'm a mutant. (And no, never been bitten by a tick on my life, plus I eat red meat like a caveman, so no alpha-gal.)
My wife has an egg and dairy allergy which adds a layer of difficulty when trying to find a place to eat out. I wish more restaurants had detailed allergen menus directly on their website rather than needing to review each menu and call in to confirm allergens. She isn’t a fan of most vegan food.
Does anyone else wish restaurants were better about having detailed allergen matrices on the websites? Or am I alone on this?
I have a soy allergy and am allergic to all forms of soy including oil and derivatives. I was looking a cold brew coffees and came across this. Have anyone tried this?
I'm not sure if this is it but we stopped giving my kid any food that gave him hives. But the list is like 20 things. I suspect some are actual allergies and some are just to do with histamine, like tomato or yogurt because cheese is fine
Sesame is fine but tahini is not. Oregano in pasta is fine but sprinkled on pizza is not. Raspberries sometimes gives hives sometimes not
Not even sure of what I'm looking for. Am I just looking at dosages? Concentration of food? Like no extracts etc?
I have a shellfish allergy, specifically shrimp and lobster. I used to not be allergic, but about 7 years ago I had a bite of lobster and had horrible stomach pains and I couldn’t think straight. Then one time I ate some Chinese food that was chicken and shrimp mixed, ate around the shrimp, and then I felt a lump in my throat.
I don’t think my allergy is major, or even that sensitive. I can be around the smell of shrimp, I can eat off a hibachi grill that had shrimp on it (that was wiped clean of course), and I’ve never had a reaction other than those 2 instances, other than peeling raw shrimp and getting itchy hands. Hell, I used to work at Panda Express and I would, daily, eat food that was either deep fried in the same fryer I fried the battered shrimp in, or eat food fried in the same oil as the non battered shrimp. Never a reaction out of me even though the oil is shared.
Lately I’ve been really scared of having a reaction. I haven’t had a reaction in years and the times I did weren’t life threatening, so I don’t understand why. For example, I used to eat chicken ramen all the time, and now I’m too scared to because the label says “may contain shellfish”…I’ve eaten it literally hundreds of times and have never had the slightest issue.
Am I just being irrational? I feel like I am, but there’s like a voice in my head that’s like “what if your throat starts closing up?” Not being able to breathe is a huge fear of mine. I’ve been to an allergist and have 2 epi pens in case of an emergency, so I should be fine regardless.
And another thing that makes me paranoid is randomly gaining allergies. Once I learned that it isn’t THAT rare to gain an allergy (already happened to me with crustaceans) I’m constantly worried that I’m gonna eat nuts and be allergic to them this time. Am I being over dramatic about that too, or is it a genuine possibility?
