So I may be lactose intolerant as I get gasy and bloated when I eat dairy

Does it matter what type of Lactose pills I take, can I take a generic cheaper pill and be okay or should I take a name brand pill ?

Things I Can Eat

I don't tolerate milk or ice cream and that is why I think I am Lactose Intolerant. I can tolerate hot pockets with meat, cooked from pre-made frozen eggplant parmigian, and home made Tiramisu. Can you suggest maybe more foods as I am new to this? Am I lactose intolerant if I can't have the first stuff but yes to the other stuff?

How Is This Not Lactose Intolerance?

Hello all,

I recently took a Lactose Tolerance blood test. This consisted of fasting then drinking a lactose solution and having blood drawn every 30 minutes for 2 hours.

Below are my results:

  1. 93 mg/dL
  2. 95 mg/dL
  3. 90 mg/dL
  4. 86 mg/dL
  5. 86 mg/dL

Additionally I had cramps and diarrhea nonstop after the test.

The administer of test says “An increase in plasma glucose greater than 30 mg/dL is normal. Those with lactase deficiency will demonstrate bloating, cramps, and diarrhea, and will show a glucose increase of less than 20 mg/dL.”

Despite clearly seeming LI positive, the practitioner who read my labs said I came back negative.

Thoughts?

Why is my stomach fairly okay with ice cream but not with cheese

Like whenever I eat ice cream my stomach may hurt a little bit but it goes away after but when I eat cheese HOLY SHIT it feels like HELL in my stomach. I was just fighting for my life on the toilet after having some pizza but if I were to eat ice cream I'd be completely fine. This doesn't make since because isn't ice cream more milk than cheese? And it's really just ice cream I'm fine with, when I eat stuff like Alfredo for example my stomach hurts really badly too like it does with cheese

Lactose free fudge

I’m trying to make a lactose free fudge. The basic fudge recipe is basically 1:1 chocolate to sweetened condensed milk, which is obviously a problem. I found this recipe online:

  • 170 g chocolate
  • 63 g butter
  • 260 g powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup almond milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla

I would like to not use so much sugar. So far I’ve tried:

  • Making it with only 80g sugar, didn’t set at all
  • Making it with 80g sugar and using like 60g or so of peanut butter. Set absolutely wonderfully, but obviously this doesn’t give you pure chocolate fudge, only chocolate peanut butter fudge.
  • Making it with 80g sugar and boiling for very long time, like 10+ minutes, to try to evacuate all the water. It kind of set but wasn’t great
  • Making it with 90g sugar and 1/8 cup almond milk. It set more than previously but still not really.

The main issue is how to get that fudge structure that is stiff enough to cut into squares but not so stiff that it’s just rebranded chocolate bars lol. Does anyone have any recommendations on a good lactose free fudge recipe that isn’t like 40% sugar by weight?

PS: Also sorry for the formatting. On mobile and Apollo has been struck down (yes, I’m still salty about that)

Is Camembert low in lactose?

Hello, is Camembert safe to eat if I’m lactose intolerant ? I’ve never tried it before and on the packaging is written “naturally without lactose” so I’m not sure if it does contain lactose or not.

Thank you

Son's lactose intolerance gave him failure to thrive. Any advice or perspective?

I am not LI, but my husband is. My son is 5 and had fallen off the growth chart weight-wise this past year. I knew milk made his stomach hurt, but the doc thought that only LI couldn't cause that severe weight loss so we did a lot of tests to rule out any other issues. Endoscopy came back negative for everything but LI.

He gained 2 lbs when I had cut out dairy and then lost the 2lbs when we were a little lose and free with the dairy for a few weeks over his birthday. We went to the allergist and she confirmed that he doesn't have an allergy (he drinks a lot of water and seems to have issues swallowing when he eats dairy), and recommended we don't completely cut it out so as not to make an allergy. So we are trying to keep dairy to once or twice a week. He seems to be doing really well and eating in his own. When eating too much dairy he has very little to no appetite and it's near impossible to get him to eat - like won't even eat cake at a birthday party.

Anyway does anyone else with LI have issues like this? My husband just gets a grumbly stomach when he eats dairy but it doesn't prevent him from eating. He's only 5 so it's hard for him to communicate or even understand exactly how things feel.

Why do you have LI as an adult but not as a kid?

I developed this shit disease around 4-5 years ago in my mid teens when I just wouldn't able to ingest milk and other dairy products at all. I was doing all good before that.

I want to know if there is any test for LI, asked my GP.. well there isn't any, said to avoid food and see.

I tried lactose free yogurt, doesn’t work for me, GP said to try A2 lactose free milk.
I've GERD -Gastroesophageal (acid) reflux.. and its making it even worse with the burning sensation.

Trying to maintan a good gut.. any suggestions pls, thanks!

I’m in pain

I (F18) think after this experience,I will just completely avoid dairy for the rest of my life. Last night (Sunday), I had Mac and cheese for dinner. elbow macaroni,Alfredo sause, and a small amount of Parmesan cheese. I didn’t even eat the entirety of what I made, not even nearly half of it. This was around 8pm and a few hours when I went to bed,I didn’t have any sort of reaction. 5am rolls around and my stomach is cramping like crazy. I can audibly hear my bowl movements a few times a minute. Like I could feel them passing through me from left to right. Now I’ve of course been through the whole “dealing with consequences after dairy” thing ever since I was around 12, but it has never been this extreme. 5am,I’m in a cold sweat and rushing to the bathroom, Liquid is all I hear once I sat down. Usually for me it would only be a little bit of liquid and mostly solid poop. I couldn’t wake up my parents because they would just tell me it’ll pass through. But by the time 7am came,I was feeling a bit better so I laid in my bed for a few seconds before the feeling I was going to shit my pants came back. I would continue going back and forth from my bedroom to the bathroom, more liquid coming out each time. 8am was where I had to finally get dressed and drive to school. I made frequent stops at gas stations just to shit. Luckily I only had one class today so I got back home at around 11. ITS BEEN 8 HOURS. And I had a statists class today. I know I could have just emailed my professor saying i wouldn’t be present in class but I hate missing class. I have a routine and I never stray away from it. I haven’t ate anything since last night nor have I drank anything.i can’t even hold down water, i keep throwing up. I had my best friend drive me to the emergency room. I just got back and they basically said I had explosive diarrhea. There have been days where I really tested my intolerance to lactose and the aftermath has never amounted to this from only a few bites of Mac and cheese.

Dairy free in NYC

I am an international student that just moved to NYC to study.
I am severely lactose intolerant, I will get really sick and get dermatitis (not allergic, I can have dairy free milk), and the pills don't really work. I could try taking more, but I don't really want to risk it.
I thought that I would not have issues in NYC, because it's a big city, but it's bad. I can find dairy free options in the grocery store, but if I go to a restaurant and say that I'm lactose intolerant and can't have dairy, they look at me like I'm crazy and ask what dairy is. I had to explain to my school that I am not vegan so I can have meat in my meal plan, but not dairy, and they where confused by the term "animal protein".
What the fuck guys?
Am I going crazy? Is being lactose intollerant that uncommon? I am Italian, and in Italy we even have dairy free pizza, I always find options at restaurants, and people understand what dairy is.

Cream Cheese and cream in coffee triggers, but not pizza?

Trying to figure this out: how can I eat 5 slices of pizza yesterday and feel nothing off but have cream cheese in my bagels and I’m bloated this morning?

I have cheese (shred and cottage) every night with my salad, but if I have cream cheese and then soda later, immediately eruption. Soda alone doesn’t do it as I can drink a large diet at the movie theater with popcorn and feel fine.

Is it just soda curdling the cream cheese? Is cream cheese more lactose oriented than mozzarella or cheddar?

I’m feeling I’m close to figuring this out.

Lactose intolerance in the stomach or intestines?

So as many of the people here I am trying to figure out my own reactions to milk products.

I have read a lot of posts that ask about how fast do people feel the symptoms coming on after eating milk products, and many have said that the reaction is almost instant. This is also my experience. However, as far as i understand lactose intolerance should be primarily caused by lactose malabsorption, due to lack of the lactase enzyme in the small intestine, and then further fermentation of the undigested lactose in the large intestine. How is it then possible that so many people feel the adverse symptoms immediately after the food reaches the stomach, where no lactose digestion happens?

Correct me if i am wrong, my biology knowledge is quite limited, but i don't understand how that makes sense. Is everyone who can feel an immediate effect from eating milk products experiencing a milk allergy, or perhaps some other condition that i am unaware of?

anyone else daydream about eating ice cream?

lmao this sounds so stupid but does anyone do that? I can't have it cause I work too much and can't take the time off to be attacked by lactose... we have no decent lactose free ice cream where I live, and I can't use lactose aiding medication cause it makes me feel just as sick!

I discovered that I'm lactose intolerance

I haven't made the blood test but I'm a physician myself and I had some issues with my intestine so I searched a bit on my own.

My basic annoyances were: a sense of bloating during the night and when i woke up, loose stools and a sense of my belly feeling full. The symptoms were more intense when I used to drink a protein shake where it contained 300mL of milk + protein powder (which contained a portion of lactose as well).

I thought it could be lactose intolerance so I stopped the protein, I reduced the milk from my coffee (now I'm drinking like 10mL of milk in all the coffee I'm drinking combined per day). I'm eating feta cheese which is okay for my intestine. After a couple of days the symptoms went away. Then I did a "challenge" test and i drunk milk again and the symptoms started. when I stopped they left again.

So I guess I joined the club

Lactose intolerance and anxiety

I have always dealt with pretty severe anxiety. About 5 years ago I figured out I was lactose intolerant I had constant reflux and nausea and gas. I also had an intense pounding sensation in my stomach. Over the years I have realized that if I mistakenly eat dairy I first notice the gi upset and nausea and gas etc. Then slightly delayed comes the anxiety flare up. This includes increase heart rate, increased worrying trouble sleeping etc. then in the next few days as my stomach settles, my anxiety settles with it. Anyone else notice something similar. I’m wondering if it’s just due to my body being under stress/inflammation. Regardless it strikes me as very strange and I only recently put two and two together.

Help.......Casein or lactose intolerance?

Rewind to 9 month ago. I got SIBO. Cut dairy and gluten. Took an Antibiotic.

Right after, I was in Europe and resumed normal eating. I did not have any issues consuming dairy of any sort. I return to the US, my GI symptoms started up again after eating dairy products.

I try a small amount of Fairlife milk (lactose free) combined with taking Lactaid pills. Symptoms come back 2 hours later w a vengeance and I'm running to the bathroom while my stomach rumbles like WW3 is going on.
Lactaid pills were zero help when I tried eating mozzarella cheese.

I can eat oats with pure whey protein isolate. I can eat that all day long with NO issues.

Protein powder with a casein/whey protein blend is a no-no. Yogurt is a no-no. Symptoms returned with both.

I think based on the above, I'm sensitive to casein, not whey. I was thinking about trying A2 milk to test this theory. Am I on the right track? WWYD?

Could it be lactose intolerance? Months of not knowing what's going on

Hi everyone! Im sure there's thousands of posts like this but I just wanted to ask if anyone has ideas on what the heck could be going on.

I've been having stomache pain since February now. It's usually on my left rib/ center of stomache. It's a stabbing pain. Or gnawing/ burning. It gets worse at night. I'm vegetarian.

I've been on PPIs for months now. Taken SIBO meds.... nothing helps.

I still have yogurt and mozarella- though I use the one that says lactose free.

I'm not sure if that is enough?

Any ideas welcome ! Take care you all!

Here’s is a breakdown of lactose content per dairy product

So, what you need to understand is that Lactose intolerance is milk sugar intolerance. Hence when choosing dairy products, you must look at the sugar content on the label of the product. For reference, regular milk typically contains high amount of sugar: about 12 grams of lactose per cup.

If you see some dairy product you haven’t seen before, you can read the Total Sugars on the label and roughly understand how much lactose is there

Below you can find the list of dairy products and experiment with where you can draw the line.

1.	Regular Milk – 12 grams of lactose per cup
2.	Goat Milk – 10 grams of lactose per cup
3.	Buttermilk – 9-12 grams per cup
4.	Whey Protein Concentrate – 6-12 grams per cup
5.	Regular Ice Cream – 6-11 grams per cup
6.	Fresh Mozzarella – Approximately 6 grams per cup
7.	Soft Cheeses:
•	Ricotta – About 6 grams per cup
•	Fresh Goat Cheese – Approximately 4-6 grams per cup
•	Cottage Cheese – Approximately 3-6 grams per cup
•	Mascarpone – About 3-5 grams per cup
8.	Greek Yogurt – 2-4 grams per cup
9.	Sour Cream – About 2-4 grams per cup
10.	Feta Cheese – About 2-4 grams per cup
11.	Whey Protein Isolate – 1 gram per cup
12.	Brie and Camembert – Around 1 gram per cup
13.	Aged Cheeses (e.g., Cheddar, Swiss, Parmesan, Gouda, Edam) – Less than 1 gram per cup

Beyond lactose content, the type of milk protein also affects digestibility. Goat cheese/milk, containing A2 protein similar to human milk, is easier to digest than cow cheese/milk with A1 protein.

Another interesting observation among my lactose-intolerant friends is that when they switched to raw milk from eco-friendly farms, they stopped experiencing any reactions. This can be explained by the presence of natural lactase enzymes and beneficial bacteria in raw milk. You can try it out.

And finally, instead of taking lactase pills, you can work on populating your gut microbiome with specific bacteria which will digest lactose for you.

I still don’t understand why some people become lactose intolerant, but some research suggests that it could be linked to changes in the person’s gut microbiome after taking antibiotics. You can buy probiotic supplements targeting lactose intolerance to weaken your symptoms, but I’m not sure if you can fully get rid of lactose intolerance. That’s still something I want to experiment with.

I am very close to figuring this out. Help needed

So, for over a week I had been feeling really ill and my stomach felt like shit, I visited doctors and they asked me to reduce stress and avoid milk to see.

I asked here for how long I should wait before confirming LI and most suggested that I should wait and avoid lactose for at least 2-3 weeks before confirming it.

I did it for 9-10 days and felt a lot better and only nauseous under stress so I kinda thought that maybe it was stress all along.

Finally I ate pasta on a good day where stress was there but a lot less(only for exam time which is 2 hours). I felt really full afterwards and tried to eat as much as possible as it was weekend.

At the end of the day I decided to drink banana shake(milk, peanut butter, 3 bananas and oats). I started farting a lot afterwards and immediately had loose motion. Does that Finally confirm Li? Could it be pasta?

So… does it or does it not contain milk? 😐

I hate this so much. I get excited that I can enjoy a certain food and then I see this at the very bottom. It doesn’t mention any form of dairy in the ingredients list so I don’t know what to think now. I need some snacks from the shop for a trip tomorrow
