Mild intolerance symptoms??

My brother has started cutting diary from his diet for a biggest loser at his work, and told me his heartburn has gone down significantly since cutting out milk and other dairy products. It got me wondering about my own relationship with lactose.

I don't have a severe reaction to cheese/milk/yogurt, but I'm wondering if I have mild reactions? I've noticed after eating those products (and honestly maybe just eating in general so I'll have to pay closer attention, but it feels like after those products) I might feel like my saliva is thicker, maybe I'll feel the digestion process in my intestines (it will hurt because I can feel the air or whatever trapped inside, traveling through and that painful feeling will give me goose bumps), and my bathroom schedule isn't always regular. Do any of these sound like mild intolerance? Or maybe I just need more fiber?? Like I said, I feel like I notice these mostly after eating dairy, but I'll have to pay closer attention to monitor if it's always/sometimes after dairy or always/sometimes after eating in general.

I don't eat an insane amount of dairy every day, but it's definitely present in my diet. I'm going to switch to a plant based protein powder, cut out the yogurt for now, and try some vegan cheese for my wraps to see if that helps.

Any opinions, advice, or food swap recs are appreciated!! :)

Can you develop lactose intolerance after consuming dairy every day for your whole life?

I've been consuming dairy almost every day for my whole life (18F), and recently after consuming dairy, I've had to use the bathroom more. Any thoughts?

Daughter can handle cooked products, but not chocolate... Help me understand!

My daughter is lactose intolerant and I'm trying to understand more about it to help her avoid being in pain.

I've learned that she can handle hard cheeses (parmesan, shredded, etc), but no soft cheeses (cream, feta, fresh mozzarella). She can't do ice cream or yogurt. These all make sense to me. Here are the areas were I'm confused:

She seems to do fine with milk products cooked into dishes (i.e. casseroles), but she can't have milk or white chocolate. From my understanding, milk in chocolate products is cooked... so why would she not be able to tolerate it in those forms?

RECOMMENDATION: I can eat cheese cake again!!

Just recently found this brand "Green Valley" and I have been RAVING about it. Since they only make LF products and their packaging says that they test every batch I figured I'd give them a try and man am I glad I did. Can't recommend it more!! Green Valley ONLY makes REAL DAIRY aaaaand Lactose-Free products.

Their cream cheese is Delicious and bakes almost the same as regular cream cheese. Best results when baked 5-10 degrees F lower. Never going back to the plant base stuff again! anyone else have experience with Green Valley?

Edit: Here's their Cheesecake recipe https://greenvalleylactosefree.com/in-the-kitchen/recipes/pecan-pie-cheesecake

Question about lactose intolerance liquid versus solid form

Can you be intolerant to lactose in liquid form only, so milk, yoghurt, ice cream, etc, but fine with it in solid form, so cheese, a chocolate bar etc?

Europe vs US Dairy

I recently got back from a trip to Europe and I can't figure something out: I had zero issues with eating dairy in Europe. However, I pretty much always have issues eating dairy in the US. Is there some sort of difference between European and US dairy?

The only thing I could think of is that the US allows some sort of hormone or something that Europe doesn't allow.

I ate fettuccini alfredo, gelato, ham and cheese sandwiches, brie, and ice cream in Europe with absolutely no problems. When I got back home, it was business as usual.

Alternative to Ibuprofen (pain/inflamation meds) without lactose?

I'm having back pain due to sitting many hours at work, I need to take something like Ibuprofen due to the inflamation on the lombar region. But I'm afraid because last time I took one pill my digestion stopped and I felt so bad for a whole 2hours with burping, stomach pain, heart racing, reflux, etc

I only got diagnosed a couple weeks ago so this is all knew to me.

  • Do you know any medication like Brufen (Ibuprofen) that does not contain Lactose?
  • Is there an alternative without taking pills, maybe some other form of intake like inhalation meds?

Food/symptoms tracking

Do any of you use a good tracking app/system to track what you’re eating along with symptoms to try and pinpoint exactly what causes discomfort? Lactose in general kills my stomach, but I notice similar feelings when not eating lactose and I really want to narrow things down. Thanks in advance!!

Third-worst pain of my life. Am I suddenly lactose intolerant?

Incoming bathroom-related TMI.

I've never been a big milk drinker (only drink it with cereal and cookies) but for the last couple of years have noticed it can cause me mild stomach discomfort, especially while I'm pregnant (which I was up until a few days ago). I eat yogurt and cheese and normally ice cream with abandon.

Tonight, after not having much milk for months because of my pregnancy, I ate a cheeseburger and a large helping of frozen custard.

Thirty minutes later I was in extreme pain. Doubled over on the toilet with intense abdominal pain/cramping, third to only childbirth and ovarian cyst rupture. I sat there sweating, hunched over, honestly thinking I might be dying for at least 30-40 minutes until I finally passed a bowel movement (and then like three more that were very liquid). My lower abdomen was also suddenly bulging/distended.

Is this what lactose intolerance feels like??

The only other thing I can think of is that I've been constipated from pregnancy/medication and it finally caught up with me in a very acute way.

ETA: Oh! I had to lie down afterward and would still get occasional sharp abdomen pains for the next couple of hours, and there was a thirty-minute period where I got severe chills, like lying under my covers but shaking and my fingernails turned purple 🤷‍♀️

sauces

Hi, I'm trying to reduce lactose-free dairy because I still get rashes, bloating, and other issues from it. My favorite sauce for salads and other dishes is dairy-free yogurt. I don't like using oil. What else could I have with my chicken and salads?

can endoscopy accurately detect LI??

I was thinking about this today- I think I might not be lactose intolerant after all. Back in October 2022, I had an upper endoscopy done and a biopsy was taken to be tested for digestive issues and stuff like celiac disease. The results came back that I had lactose intolerance and GERD. But I’m thinking about it, and all the times I’ve eaten dairy both before and after that endoscopy and I don’t recall having any noticeable issues (like diarrhea, bloating, gas, etc) besides acid reflux when I eat something chocolatey. There have only been 3 times I recall having any adverse reactions to eating dairy, all of which occurred when I was a young kid, and all of which might have easily been due to other factors.

Does anyone here know if getting a biopsy taken is actually accurate in diagnosing/detecting lactose intolerance??

Does lactaid not work for you?

I started having extreme belly issues around December of 2022. Turns out I’m lactose intolerant and sucrose intolerant. My enzymes for the sucrose intolerance work wonders, but lactaid never seems to help no matter how many I take. Is anyone else like this?

Substitute For Half & Half?

Hi all - would you please recommend a substitute for the half & half I put in my coffee?

I’m looking for that creaminess. I’ve tried almond milk (a number of different brands) but they just seemed watery!

I’ve become lactose intolerant but still don’t want to use fakes like Coffeemate.

I live in a very small town so options might be limited but would still like to hear your recommendations.

Thanks

How do you view dairy?

i'm curious on how you view dairy. for me i see milkshakes as a bad time in a cup with regret later on and nacho cheese as melted regret, i view dairy in general as hazardous to my digestive system

Has lactose intolerance made your life any better?

I recently found out I have it, and I've always liked cooking. I'm poor, though, so I didn't spend my money on trying to cook new dishes. If you make something new and it sucks, you've basically screwed over dinner for that night. Dinner with ingredients that cost money.

But lactose intolerance has forced me to cook new things. And now I've learned that I really love cooking. I try to budget towards making new dishes, and I'm making a list of what I like that's dairy-free. I haven't screwed up anything too bad yet (fuck roasted carrots), but the point is that this condition has given me a hobby. I haven't been passionate about something in years.

I see a lot of depressing posts here, and I'm not really sure if my positive one is welcome. I want to know if I'm not alone, though. Has anyone else experienced good life changes due to their lactose intolerance?

I take half a pill of 10.000 FCC lactase, is there anything wrong with this approach?

I have very mild lactose intolerance, to the point my symptoms are mostly gas and bloatness; it usually takes too much lactose to cause diarrhea. Because of that, I thought ingesting half a pill would be as effective, with the addition of being economic too.

Is there any problem with that, so long as it works?

gluten free, lactose free, no added sugars protein bars?

Hello, can people recommend gluten free, lactose free, no added sugars protein bars? Possibly available in Europe. Low sugar would be good. No added sugar a must. Thank you!

What things to avoid in a Sushi restaurant generally, for severely lactose intolerant?

Since I became very severely lactose intolerant I have really been to any sushi restaurants after the rimet they served me Endamame which I thought was ok but later discovered that it was actually covered in butter by that restaurant..and I got severe nausea diarrheah after...

What foods are ok for you in a Japanese sushi restaurant? I assume the sushi wrapped in seaweed is ok? The seaweed Nori or wasabi green chili doesn't usually have lactose does it? Anything else that usually ok?

Feeling sick after eating 4 cheese pasta. Need advice

So I’ve been trying to limit dairy and so far lactaid pills have worked very good against pizza, ice cream, etc. Today I wanted to test my luck and ate a four cheese pasta from a local restaurant. Well… even after taking 2 pills, I am now in the bathroom feeling really dizzy and miserable! It sucks and like I’m so dissapointed because I’ve had awesome luck with everything else but just 1 pasta has ruined my evening . Any advice to feel better?

edit: i realize i am brave, but stupid

is whisky infused Coconut whip cream possible?

I can't seem to find much info on what would happen if I tried incorporating a few tablespoons of whisky into coconut cream whipped cream anywhere.

I don't particularly have the time and equipment to test it before a dinner party where I'll be serving a bunch of friends. Half of which are lactose intolerant.

It seems the easier route would just to pop lactase pills and use dairy, but wondering if I could add liquid to whipped coconut milk.

Do lactase pills help with the brain fog?

Got some lactase pills, took it a few times but not too sure if they were effective. I'm trying to just stop dairy altogether for many digestive reasons but also because of the massive brain fog. Will the lactase pills help with the brain fog, outside of the obvious gas, bloating, discomfort?
