Be Excellent To Each Other.

From eyeglasses, to office chairs, cherished childhood stuffed animals, and trinkets and toys. Doors, walls, furniture and floors, popcorn ceilings and ceiling fans. Appliances, kitchen utensils, drills, chainsaws, and machines of all ilk. Someone here is going to try to help you fix it when it's busted.

What we do

We strive above all to be a sub that provides a community service, and as such we hold ourselves to certain standards. Keep the comments on-topic, you can make jokes, it's fine, just don't go off the rails. Do not market anything here without asking the mods first (spoiler, we're gonna say no), don't be posting links to Amazon.com with affiliate codes in them either. Don't post about things you've already solved or made, /r/DIY is a better place for that.

Passing good fixes forward

Further to this goal of providing a service; If someone's comment provides you with a working solution to your issue (or if you just plain figure it out for yourself) post a comment singling out what the solution ultimately was and please flair your post as Fixed. Hopefully this will let future readers learn from our collective successes.

Posting for Maximum Effect

When you make your submission, post a detailed description of your issue and the friendly users here will do their best to sort you out.

Do your best to include:

  • A detailed description of the problem.

  • Detailed photos are often a plus. This can mean, for example, close up photos of a part as well as photos from farther back, and/or different angles, which give significant context.

  • If there is a part number or a model number on something you suspect or know to be at issue definitely include that.

  • A description of the event(s) or circumstances that lead up to or were present at the time the issue arose.

Safety

There are things that are too dangerous for us to handle here. This can include certain electrical jobs, or natural gas plumbing jobs for example. Rule of thumb, if there's any reasonable chance you could get hurt or killed if something went awry you'll probably be directed to find yourself an expert.

Basic Decorum

Don't engage in racism, sexism, creeedism, homophobia, transphobia, or general assholery. The banhammer is swift and unforgiving.

Last but not least. The Prime Directive

Above all else: Be Excellent to Each Other

Plastic nut spins but can’t tighten on bolt

I have this plastic wing nut on a (rusted) threaded bolt which tightens or loosens a clamp for a roof rack cross bar.

The nut can spin freely in both directions, but won’t “grab” the threads on the bolt to tighten or loosen. I’ve tried some liquid wrench and coaxing it with some banging/tapping with a hammer but no luck. Any ideas?

Dishwasher fills then drains without actually running

So have a dishwasher model number GDF450PGR3WW, that won’t run. When hit start it will fill with water then drain it all and light over start button starts flashing. Does this in normal and hard cycle, 1 hour cycle started to work for maybe 10-20 minutes, it filled up, started spraying the water then drained and started having the same issue, filled back up to immediately drain and start light began flashing. I’m assuming it’s an issue with control board but anyone else know what’s causing this?

Sash window won't open inwards on hinges for cleaning

I'm trying to clean my sash windows, but one of them won't open inwards on the hinges. It seems like it's locked somehow, since I can see the little tabs that keep it in place pull back completely when I pull them on top of the frame. The very top of the window can move, but it seems like it's locked a bit further down. It's only the bottom pane that's stuck—I can feel that the top one is loose and can be tilted inwards, but obviously I can't move in when the bottom one is stuck. All the other similar windows in my apartment opened without issue, but this one seems to have a slightly different sliding mechanism inside the frame, with the slider hidden behind two long vertical panels. Any ideas about what might be causing this? Am I missing some locking mechanism somewhere? Thanks!

Toilet seat unremoveable!

Just can't remove it. Tried WD-40, power tools, hand and tools, etc but I just can't open those screws. They rotate along with the nut behind. Nuts seem plastic in touch but I'm unable to get a better picture.

Please suggest a way!

Door came off top hinge. How do I fix it?

I was roughhousing with my cousin and I backed into the door with enough force to pop it off the top hinge. Anybody have any idea how to fix it (if it is fixable)?

Water pooling on old concrete

Hi! My house has an old concrete patio along the side of it between mine and my neighbor’s house, and it pools water in one particular area. I didn’t get a great picture but basically it’s all the dark spots in the photo that i drew an arrow to.

I live very close to my neighbor since we’re in a dense city area, so the entire space is concrete and slopes toward the street.

Any thoughts on possible solutions to level it out and keep it flowing toward the street?

I’m hoping to avoid digging or redoing it altogether — i planned to cover the hardscape with click tile or patio ceramic in time but i want to solve this first of course.

Might be a terrible idea but i was wondering if i could level that spot out with sand and just proceed with the patio click tiles on top of the full slab…

Burn on lino / linoleum

I'm facing an urgent issue: there's a burn in my dorm room, and I need your assistance. Here's my plan:

  1. Sanding: Use a mini electric sander to carefully sand the burn marks, ensuring not to damage the surface deeply.
  2. Filler Application: Apply filler to restore a uniform texture to the damaged area.
  3. Second Sanding: Sand again to smooth out any rough spots.
  4. Repainting: Meticulously repaint the damaged area to match the original color.
  5. Finishing Touch: Finish with a glossy coat of linseed oil to give a polished appearance.

I'm uncertain if this plan will be effective. Could you please advise me on the best course of action? Also, I don't have an extra piece of lino for this.

Squeaky second hand rocking chair, baby imminent

How do I silence this chair? We don't have a lot of money (or time before the baby comes). The construction obviously isn't the best, there's a lot of gaps in between pieces. It does seem to be real wood at least, so that's something. We've tightened all the screws to kingdom come but it didn't help. Google seems to think I need to either glue it or oil it. Those options seem mutually exclusive to me so I thought I'd ask advice first. Glue or oil? Is glueing even effective with such a big gap? And if oil, what oil? Silicone spray, olive oil, beeswax?

Fridge light query

So our fridge light hasn’t worked since we moved in. It’s an integrated fridge freezer (50/50) probably 10/12 years old (UK). It’s obvious there’s been a bit of heat damage but looking to replace the unit or cover. Also- can feel around the burnt bit and guessing there should be an opening where the bulb screws in. Help!

My washer dryer combo is still draining while off

Hi. My apartment came with a GE washer dryer combo. This is my first time using a combo washer dryer but I use it just like a regular one.

Turn on Load laundry Add detergent Turn nob to normal wash Press start

gfq14essnoww is the model number.

However, it’s still draining while it’s off. This is a first time for me since I moved here 3 months ago. Is that normal or something I should be concerned about. I’ve done about 40 loads since I’ve been here.

Is there something I could do to fix this on my end before I call the landlord.
