Be Excellent To Each Other.

From eyeglasses, to office chairs, cherished childhood stuffed animals, and trinkets and toys. Doors, walls, furniture and floors, popcorn ceilings and ceiling fans. Appliances, kitchen utensils, drills, chainsaws, and machines of all ilk. Someone here is going to try to help you fix it when it's busted.

What we do

We strive above all to be a sub that provides a community service, and as such we hold ourselves to certain standards. Keep the comments on-topic, you can make jokes, it's fine, just don't go off the rails. Do not market anything here without asking the mods first (spoiler, we're gonna say no), don't be posting links to Amazon.com with affiliate codes in them either. Don't post about things you've already solved or made, /r/DIY is a better place for that.

Passing good fixes forward

Further to this goal of providing a service; If someone's comment provides you with a working solution to your issue (or if you just plain figure it out for yourself) post a comment singling out what the solution ultimately was and please flair your post as Fixed. Hopefully this will let future readers learn from our collective successes.

Posting for Maximum Effect

When you make your submission, post a detailed description of your issue and the friendly users here will do their best to sort you out.

Do your best to include:

  • A detailed description of the problem.

  • Detailed photos are often a plus. This can mean, for example, close up photos of a part as well as photos from farther back, and/or different angles, which give significant context.

  • If there is a part number or a model number on something you suspect or know to be at issue definitely include that.

  • A description of the event(s) or circumstances that lead up to or were present at the time the issue arose.

Safety

There are things that are too dangerous for us to handle here. This can include certain electrical jobs, or natural gas plumbing jobs for example. Rule of thumb, if there's any reasonable chance you could get hurt or killed if something went awry you'll probably be directed to find yourself an expert.

Basic Decorum

How can I camouflage this damage on my floating floor without replacing it? As you can see in the picture, the surface has noticeable wear, discoloration, and scratches.

Cat scratches

My cat scratched up the edges of my door frame. Moving out of my apartment next month and need to fix it ( or hide it well enough that they don’t notice). What’s my best course of action? Wood filler, sand it down, and paint it?

dryer squeaking - worse with heavier load, worse as dryer time goes on

ETA: Here's a link to a video that includes the sound.

Our dryer started squeaking about 45 mins into a load today. I removed about 4/5 of the load and the squeaking was significantly less, but becomes louder as it runs, but still not as loud as when it was cycling a full load through it. Does anyone know if this points more to the belt or to something else? TIA!

How to make stairs look better?

I bought an old house. I peeled the carpet off of these stairs and damaged the risers. I put down traction strips so I don’t slip. How do I make these look better? Can I cover them with easy-to-install vinyl that goes around the edge of the stair? Am I able to patch the wood chips somehow?

Frozen pipe, still don’t have normal flow.

I called a plumber in to fix a water leak I had about 2 weeks ago. It was the coldest day it had been, never getting above 0. He turned water off so that he could work on it. When we turned the water back on, every pipe (hot and cold) but the hot water in the kitchen (furthest pipe from the hot water heater) got back flow. Under the assumption of a frozen hot water pipe, Plumber suggested a space heater and opening the faucet to hot so we can know when flow is back and it would naturally unfreeze. We did that. It wasn’t until it hit above 32 last week did we get a hot water trickle. It hasn’t increased more than trickle though. It’s been about a week and a half since the frozen pipe. Any suggestions?

No clue how this stain got on my jacket’s sleeve, but it didn’t come out after washing it. Any ideas on how to fix it? 100% polyester if that helps. Thank you very much!

Washing machine

My guess is it’s broken beyond being worthy of repair but any ideas as to what’s happening? I know it’s a long shot but it cut out mid cycle and now it makes this horrible sound when I try start it and then keeps cutting off again. It’s been drained and filter checked etc

Gas oven randomly made a very loud buzz noise that wouldn’t stop

Sorry I have no video of it as I didn’t think about that, just rushed to the basement to shut the power

it’s a Maytag gas oven. Not sure if the power went out during the night but this morning it gave the “check that knobs are at off and press start” message, which shows up when the neighbourhood’s power cuts out

I just pressed start to clear the message, didn’t use it, but after around an hour while I was eating the noise just started. It’s not like a regular transformer hum, it was like an alarm kind of loud so that caused me to just get up and rush

Right now I have the power to it off in the electrical panel as I’m heading out the house for a bit and don’t want to risk anything.

Any thoughts or ideas on what this could be? Can I turn power back on and just leave it as normal? If not, where should I start looking?

Thank you!

Just laid new floors and the house flooded

Hello everyone- my mom just laid new floors this week on top of her stained concrete. The floors had just been caulked when they decided to turn the water back on since it was disconnected from this last freeze we had. When they did that there was no one inside and the whole house flooded because someone left the washer water spigot open ( the washer and dryer was still outside since they just caulked the house). The flooring that they use is just that snap kind that's vinyl planks with padding on them- so I'm wondering if we need to completely pull up all the boards and dry it or if we can just use some fans and it'll dry out underneath on its own.. we also didn't remove baseboards when laying the floor so water was still able to get under there even after being caulked. The water wasn't sitting for long but it is a lot of water and it flooded pretty much the whole house a significant amount. Any advice would be much appreciated! Thank you!

Toilet Tank Not Emptying After Flushing

Hello, I'm not experienced in this at all. When I flush and hold the flush knob, the tank doesn't fully empty. A bunch of water stays moving around at the bottom until I let go. When I finish the flush, the tank fills up normally and then overflows, dripping back into the toilet bowl.

Would changing the flapper fix this?? or is there a clog somewhere causing the water not to drain.

Mr. Coffee won't brew

Have had a lovely Mr. Coffee maker for years. It recently kicked out and won't brew. Just beeps twice when the "brew" or "clean" button is pressed.

Things I've tried:

  1. Adjusting filter
  2. Filling the reservoir
  3. Filling the reservoir with vinegar and 4. trying to start a clean cycle
  4. Unplugging it/ plugging it back in

I'd love to help out my little friend instead of replacing it. Any suggestions welcome. Thank you.
