I know they can be a divisive topic, but what makes an OC awesome and likeable? And creators of OCs, what do you take into consideration when creating your character?
Personally, I try not to make them flawed individuals and give them more of a personality besides being your typical oblivously-attractive shoujo manga-type female lead.
Hi, I was just wondering if anyone knew about a mha react arcane fanfic
In my fic on AO3, the big bad villain dies at the end. They are a pretty important character BUT is that what people will think of when they see the Major Character Death tag on the fic? None of the protagonists die, just the antagonist. Is it reasonable to tag, or should I leave it? Or should I just say to hell with it and tag it as Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings?
I seen stuff like this discussed a few times and it began to make me think. I CONSTANTLY swap between using American bs British words. I watched mostly American TV shows growing up, but I live in a British colonized place where using those words are normal. I'll say "colour" instead of "color", but I sometimes swap in a fic and I don't notice.
It really got me thinking if people are annoyed by that? People have said they hate when American characters use British words, but does the spelling of favorite/favourite matter or is it just things like bin instead of trash and flat instead of stuff like apartment?
this wasn’t a rude comment, not towards me or my fic anyway, but it was just weird.
in the fic, i included some internal dialogue of character A being annoyed at character B. it wasn’t bashing but was based on their canon dynamic where B likes to be purposefully annoying to A, A is very open in their annoyance and A and B know its all light-hearted.
the first comment just asked if i wrote A as hating B, and when i responded with essentially what i just said (based on canon, no its not hate, its just for fun) i got another, much longer response from the same person. essentially, they went on a rant about how they hate when fic authors make A hate B or they make B a bad person, and how no one knows how to write B blah blah blah, but they ended it with a compliment towards me for not doing that??
it made me uncomfortable to read them bashing other fic authors, especially because its a relatively small fandom with only a handful of fics, and it made me a bit nervous about incoming comments cause its my first experience with a not-so-positive person lol
any advice for something like this? im pretty new to the fanfic scene so i dont know a lot of etiquette yet but anything would be helpful!
I’m currently working on a fic, and I’m torn on some plot lines I want to use regarding two characters. The characters are two boys, one of whom is the younger sibling to a now VERY PISSED older brother (who used to be human, but let himself become a monster in order to shed the pain of his past) who’s furious at him for his betrayal. Now, this is what I’m torn upon: how would I write a reconciliation arc between the two?
Option 1 involves keeping the younger brother (and his friend dragged along) as is and having the two brothers reconcile.
Option 2 involves making the two boys drink an aging potion, (and almost drink another one that would have turned them into monsters) for the sake of revenge (with them getting stopped by another relative of the younger sibling and the local (well meaning) mad scientist.)
Option 3 would’ve involved the two boys drinking both potions, with the duo who had stopped them making them realize too late that revenge wasn’t the best option at all.
i remember reading a fanfic a couple years ago on wattpad and it was a sort of kaneki x reader, but in the fanfic you are amon’s sister and you are in the same accident as kaneki so you have an organ transplant and turn into a half ghoul and the all i remember of the readers kagune was that they were wings. its a two part fanfic and the second book (or whatever you would call it) is about re but i really want to reread this fanfic it is so well written and its quite a few years old. i do remember the cover of the re one being haise in the manga but thats all i remember, i dont remember anything about either titles annoyingly. ive looked everywhere in my archived and library and its not there and i have looked for ages on wattpad so i dont know if it was removed either but if someone knows the title of it please let me know 😭
I’ll start:
As an American, I do not care if my favorite American characters use British English. I don’t expect British authors to look up every word that is spelled differently/isn’t used in American English. That seems tedious and unrealistic, and seeing the occasional “bin” or “flat” does not bug me as a reader.
A fic can be a slowburn with a 5 digit word count. If there’s no filler, and the pining is intense, a good slowburn can be under 50k. It just takes more skill to accomplish.
Ok so recently my girlfriend found a post on her wattpad account and someone basically was like you should change your book cover. Basically saying that the cover of the book was bad. Like WHO DOES THAT SERIOUSLY! This whole idea of don’t judge a book by its cover they completely just ignore that idea. If they had read the fan fiction then they would have known why the author picked that photo. but guess what they did not read it bc they decided to look at that post and then be like no you need a better one.
Like as she is a small writer she was pissed and disheartened by this. I was enraged by this. Small writers have the courage to post their works and they don’t get the attention they deserve and when they do get attention this happens…
I use to write but as I don’t have time anymore but like for somone to just blatantly Say that enraged me. Most writers put a good bit of thought into there cover photos. I know I use to! The cover photo can convey a message, it can be symbolic, it can be so much. but for them to not have read it and then disrespect the photo because it was not the expensive photo finish is crazy. It does not have to be this crazy very detailed photo to be a good cover photo.
I know that that’s what we 1st see but I mean I thought people were better than to just see a photo and then disrespect on it with out actually putting in effort to understand where the writer is coming from.
They don’t have any stories posted or anything like that I should mention. To me they don’t really get to say that when they never written and posted something before. The whole experience is a journey and take a lot of thinking and planing out but they obviously did not see that
Have yall had this experience before where someone make a post to just belittle your hard work? Or has anything bad like this happened to yall? I am curious about yall thoughts on this?
PSA I apologize for any misspellings of any kind or any grammatical errors. Writing is not my strong suit I just like writhing my ideas down
I don't know why but whenever I enjoy a non-problematic/nice character, I feel irrationally guilty because I feel like I should like problematic characters a lot more. I feel like I should only appreciate flawed characters and not imperfect but kind characters.
What should I do about this? You don't have to answer because I don't think there's anyone else who has this affliction.
I’m looking for the funniest fanfics you’ve ever read. I love situational comedy but really give me anything that made you laugh out loud. I’ll read any fandom. I’m down with crackfics but would appreciate if it’s more than just ‘lol I’m so random’ humor but some of that is fine.
This one was a lot of fun last time so let's give it another go!
How to play:
Comment with an emoji. It can be any emoji and you can leave as many comments as you like.
Reply to an emoji with an excerpt from your fic that you think matches. It could include a vibe, a word, or even the emoji itself. It's totally up to you how literally or loosely you want to interpret the prompt, so go nuts!
Remember to upvote and comment on people's excerpts, especially the ones you receive. The best part of these games is building that encouraging community and getting to know our fellow writers.
Have fun!
Hi everyone!
I’m looking for fanfictions set in the Harry Potter universe that feature an original female character (OFC) as the main character. Just to be clear, I’m NOT interested in fem!harry fanfic. I’ve read a lot of those already, and while they’re fun, I’m ready for something fresh.
When it comes to relationships, I’m open to anything, but I especially enjoy GxG romances. If you know any great stories with a sapphic relationship (whether it’s the main plot or a side story), I’d love to check them out.
Thanks so much for any suggestions!
Heya!
Just finished the fic, Leap of faith, which was awesome! It had great character development, cute/funny moments, and story telling of the MCU/DCU. Especially cute moments of (we want to adopt) Peter Vibes.
I am looking for similar fanfics, I have already read the masterpiece Dark Matter. Looking forward to your insights
I know “feels like fanfiction” is often an insult, but what are some examples of the opposite?
I know I've read it a few times but for some reason I never saved it?? Spoilers for the fic if you never read it and it sounds cool, like super spoilers So basically it was a like dream smp and third life type crossover, Tommy and tubbo signed up for a game something called like Pandora's vault or something like that. I can get more info detail but basically it was a life game series that Tommy and tubbo got tricked into. It turns out that they'd been in a cycle of games, probably hundreds of games and they slowly realize this and are trying to break the cycle. It ends with them begining the game again remembering everything, realizing they have to keep trying. Some super notable things I think, I'll probably remember more as I wait; techno started with 2 lives and no one knew why but it had something to do with their past attempts to get out possibly, Phil had only one life because hardcore, everyone had 3 lives otherwise. Tommy gets down to one life pretty quickly but someone I can't remember who gives him a life but no one understands how not even the one who did it. They get tricked into the challenge by Dr dream I can add more if this isn't enough
So I've just recently read the fic Death before Inaction and thought it was amazing. Are there any other stories like it where spiderman started being a hero before the avengers or is just really strong.
In a recent conversation with a relative about a book I was reading, I mentioned how I liked the way the story used PoV. My aunt then stopped me, asking what PoV meant. It reminded me that PoV isn't a common acronym for point of view in most spaces.
What are some similar slip ups you have made?
I don't hate it actually, because I love to see the development of two characters going from rivals to lovers, but I still wonder why people love this trope so much. No offense, I just want to discuss it because I love to learn
My favorite trope is…. dun dun dun: unrequited love! Especially when it comes to hanahaki disease. I know that itself isn’t liked by many, but I am obsessed with it. And the angst and pining in itself.
Hi I just joined this subreddit. I love listening to podcasts specifically fictional ones. I'm currently listening to Fae And Fiends. I want to write a fanfiction about it when I finish listening to it.
Do you have any tips or advice? Have ever written a fanfiction based on a podcast?
Note: links will be finalised after all posts are up! I have several things to juggle today so please be patient with me 😅
It is the holiday season for many of us, and in the spirit of giving, we are going to be all about giving out them comments this December! We will be running a variety of comment-centric events, open to all comers, skill levels, and designed so that you can choose something that fits your own personal schedule. This post is to provide an overview of events and to be a space to ask questions. There will be separate threads for each event to keep things from becoming too messy.
For those of you who remember last year’s comment-a-thon, note in particular that the “comment race” event is different this year. Instead of tallying up all comments across the month, we will be running Comment Race threads which are open for a limited time period, and you must comment on as many fics as you can in that time. I’m hoping to run at least one of these a week. Here’s hoping you can make at least one!
To make the comment-a-thon a bit easier, we will also be posting an Authors Directory where subreddit authors can post their author profiles and (main) fandoms to enable a quick Ctrl+F action to find authors in fandoms you know. Look out for that thread now!
You can also check out the AO3 Collection for past subreddit events!
There are no prizes for this event, unless you count the shout-outs we will be giving to participants in our January wrap-up post. If you want a potential shout-out in January, you will need to track your comments in a google spreadsheet or similar so mods can check them at the end of the month. More details of what you will need to track for each event in their respective threads!
All events run from today, December 2nd, until early next year, January 2nd.
So, without further ado, let the comment-a-thon begin with…
#Comment Race
#Did you see anything that caught your eye? Click on the links above to check out the rules for each event.
Ships, character tropes, characters themselves, you name it. What opinion did you previously hold but have turned away from?
Welcome, welcome, welcome to our fanfiction treasure hunt! This is designed to be a low-stress event where you can choose how you spend your time, so do not feel pressure to complete comments or to reach an arbitrary points goal. These commenting events are just about spreading the love around in the spirit of the season, so approach this with that in mind <3
Without further ado, please find our comment challenges below! They have been generally ordered in terms of difficulty and points allocated accordingly.
There are no sign-ups for this event, you can do as little or as much as you want! Only authors who score more than 20 points will get a shout-out in our January wrap-up, but feel free to brag as much as you want about your points total around the subreddit. The more comments, the better! <3 But please read the rules before participating!

This is intended to mainly be of use for anyone participating in our Comment-a-Thon this December to make it easier to find comments, however, anyone is welcome to post their profile(s) whether they are participating or not! You can find the event overview HERE for more info. Of course, you are welcome to use it to find new reading material even if you aren't participating <3
Since this month is all about commenting, we thought it might be easier for those participating in our comment-a-thon events if there was a big list of subreddit authors somewhere… well, it’s here! Comment below with links to your author profile, fandom (or main fandoms if you’ve written for a lot of them), and whether you would like to opt-in to concrit or not.
To make it easy to search authors, please use the following formatting:
Fandoms: (List 5-8 main fandoms if you have written for a lot - full names AND acronyms recommended for those using Ctrl + F)
Concrit? Yes/no/ask me first/other custom response
Links: AO3/FFN/Wattpad/any other sites. If you post on any less common sites, you may want to mention whether people can comment as a guest or not.
Happy comment-a-thon to you all!
Having a bit of trouble writing dialogue that 'flows' rather than feeling blocky. Any tips that you have, or techniques that you do or don't like to see in fanfiction?
putting this in as discussion, because i dont intend for this to be a personal request, but something like a mini brainstorming session or an advice board anyone can come back to!
my tip would be: dont get too stuck on describing every single detail. i fall for this trap quite a bit too. the reader has an imagination; they dont need to be told about every single facial expression, every thrust, every time a character moans... you should give just enough information about mechanical details for things to make sense (anatomically or position-wise etc), but dont be afraid to leave some things to the imagination and focus on feelings/sensations instead!
My whole fanfic career, I've written on my laptop. It's so much easier. I'm a far better typist on my phone, and I can bang out words much more quickly. Plus, I never have to contend with my phone "correcting" names and other obscure words. I never really understood why people would write stories on a phone.
Then I adopted two cats.
I don't know how they know, but they just inherently know when I'm about to start writing, and they immediately spring into action. They'll just hop onto my lap because it apparently belongs to them, curl up, and push the laptop away. If I try to keep both on my lap, they will stretch out their paws to cover the keyboard and maybe add some letters of their own. I've lost literally weeks of potential writing time because of these two. So now my only recourse is to use my phone, because I can at least use it when my lap is otherwise occupied.
For those of you who write on your phone, why do you do it?
I’ve been reading fanfiction for over a decade now, and it’s become a huge part of my life. I’m on ao3 almost every night or whenever I have any downtime. I’ve never told anyone about this before because I have an irrational fear of being judged, and have been too nervous to engage with others online which has made the whole thing feel pretty isolating.
Recently, I’ve been feeling a constant dread that once I'm in a relationship and living with someone, I won’t be able to continue this hobby since it’s always been a secret, and it would feel wrong to keep it from a future partner. As much as I would want to share this part about myself with them, I wouldn’t even know how to bring it up and it's making me feel like maybe I should just stop reading fic entirely to avoid the awkwardness.
I know I'm probably overthinking it and getting ahead of myself considering I'm not even currently in a relationship, but this fear is making me feel hesitant to date entirely. Has anyone else ever felt this way or can relate on some level?
For the record, I don’t think reading/writing fanfic is something to be ashamed of at all, I’m just an extremely self-conscious person.
