So, I need your guy's expertise in all things questionable.
I have a scene I want to write, where one of my FMCs is locked in a room to wait to be executed. I need a way for her to smuggle a pill through a competent and thorough body/cavity search. In the scene, she'd be wearing a knee-length dress, stockings, lab coat and high heels, no jewelry.
She would have known this was coming, so I'd say she'd have had about a week of prep-time, but wouldn't know where she'd be locked up.
Any ideas?
So for further context, this series was originally going to be one fic but as I’ve kept outlining I’ve realized that this story would be Uber long as one fic and would work better as a series of interconnected long fics (around 30 chapters and 100k words or so).
Anyways, the protagonist doesn’t find out that his love interest(s) are both demons till the end of book six of a seven book (though I may do more after the main series ends). My reasoning for having the wait for the reveal be this long is that it would have made it more impactful and also I wanted to have the main love interest of our protagonist to have mostly finished her redemption arc as well as have her father completely warm up to him to make the drama post-reveal more spicy.
But at the same time, with the talk of length and pacing in this sub I am worried that readers of this series might become impatient and that what I’m doing is bad pacing?
What should I do? Should I stick to my guns or should I go back to my outline and tweak it to where the reveal happens earlier (like say book 3) and find unnecessary stuff within each book to cut for the sake of pacing and making the series shorter?
Another writer on AO3 gifted me a fic today because I was such a big fan of one of their earlier works on that ship. I'm so flattered 😭
I've seen this quite often.
"OC's are just poorly hidden self inserts."
"If you wanna write an OC, write your own damn book."
"Cringe self insert trash."
And so on.
Why do various people throw so much hate towards that kind of story?
Whenever I have a new fic idea I always come up with the action and conflict first... then I start to write it and realize I need to establish the setting, introduce the characters, etc. I wish I could skip over the entire beginning and ending, and just write the fun part 🤣
i'm curiose to see what yall got, no male x male pairings and time travel fanfics if possible
so trying again, i'm new to posting stuff on reddit
i need help again finding a fanfiction by Ayame4679 called "watching the movie"
i've only found one who had copied it and added their oc into it which i don't like compared to the original
so once again help please and thank you
I've been debating writing a fic where canon happens in the background and the main characters are a few of my OCs. If you've written/read a fic like this, how was it?
Sometimes when I start writing I wonder "what if people don't like my interpretation/adaptation of canon" then realize I shouldn't care. Remember you write for yourself only, and if you're really afraid of getting hate, just don't post it. You can write anything you want!
So I forgot the name of a particular ASTV fic and I'm not sure if anyone knows the name. But here are a couple pieces of info.
Miguel was repeatedly getting pranked ↪Perpetrators include: Pavitr, Miles, Hobie (?), etc.
Each chapter ended with "Did you get it?"
At the end of the fic, it was revealed that the crew was actually compiling a set of videos where Miguel gets pranked one way or the other.
It's found on AO3
There were 5+ chapters
The name is not "Just Meant to be a prank"
I've struggled with ADD and disordered thoughts (among other as of yet undiagnosed thinking disorders) that impact my day to day life in the worst ways.
I want to write for myself as an outlet of sorts, but I really struggle to make my words interesting and coherent. I can seem to write something that's just over 1000 words, and that seems like a real accomplishment once I get it out, but I am not satisfied with a story that short. Then it becomes a chore as I try to bulk it up into an actual story. I end up abandoning everything. I have learned to stop publishing anything at all because it's so much of a struggle. I think there must be a way to organize thoughts in order to write that first draft but I have no idea.
If there's anyone else in this sub with this disorder, I would like to chat about your process. I just want to be able to word vomit and edit later but I can't! Ugh!

I recently got a beta after a few months of working on my multi chapter story. They have helped me so much and have given me some great ideas, and overtime they convinced me to go back to the first few chapters to do some modifications.
After doing a reread of my story recently, I have noticed it’s slowly taking a different turn than what I had originally wanted and planned. The entire tone has shifted and most of the modifications I had to do in earlier chapters consisted of adding and taking away dialogue, scenes and details in order to make sense of the ideas Beta had given me for the future.
I have heard that in the publishing world, many authors end up having to scrap at least 90% of their work and redo it in order for it to be more successful. I have never worked with a beta before, so I don’t know if my feelings are valid, or just part of the process, but I’m starting to feel as though this story isn’t mine anymore and I’m getting ready to abandon it.
One of the scenes just randomly popped into my head today and so I tried to find the story it's from. While I've been able to find pretty much all my top favs from those days, this one is being tricky and it's drivin me nuts.
As much as I can remember, it involves an Umbreon who lives in his old trainer's abandoned cabin who died some years ago. The time is snowy. He's having trouble finding food, so he goes out to the snowy woods to find something. but it's so cold or a blizzard starts so he hides in a cave for shelter. but there's another male eevo there. I think it's a Glaceon, and i think he was fat? idk. anyway, they talk about loneliness and blah blah and are like why don't we help each other out. the Umbreon is hesitant because he thinks he's straight, but eventually gives in and then loves it and they live happily ever after and such.
Yeah I don't remember the title or character names or region name or anything like that. The eevos might even be wrong too. Though I'm fairly confident the main is Umbreon cuz I know I was obsessed with them back then too. This was like, my middleschool days before and up to or around 2010. So yeah, very ancient.
Hello all!
Could I get some recommendations for some well written novel length Harry Potter fanfiction? I’ve read Manacled and loved it. Open to pretty much anything with a good plot. Thanks!
Guys, do you think there is an ideal size for a group of adventurers? It's because I created about 11 different characters (12 including the Dryad but I didn't see any point in putting a Dryad in the team since her role would be to be the guardian of the forest) I have
looking for the most well written examples of non-linear narratives that fan fiction has to offer
Post inspired by a YouTube vid of a similar theme, which made me remember the time I had a dramatic scene plotted of a character discovering his best friend has been murdered, by finding said friend's body. His nude body. Or, as autocorrect thought made sense, his rude body. Luckily I fixed it before readers noticed.
Hello!!!!
What is the difference between an omegaverse fanfiction and a multiverse fanfiction?
For context, I'm not indigenous, I'm white (latinx, I suppose, but in my country I'm considered white), but I wanted to make an OC of mine part of the xavante people of Brazil. I'm writing a JoJo's Bizarre Adventure fic mostly made up of OCs, and this character is based on the Brazilian band Sepultura (go listen to them btw, they're great), who collaborated with the xavante people for their album Roots, so I wanted to make her a native for this reason.
However, there's not many resources about them around, and I don't want to mess up the representation of a group I'm not even close to being a part of. I can't find much on how xavante people live in urban cities, nor much about what their personal names are.
And yet, I don't know if I should just make her another ethnicity or not. It feels cheap and cowardly, and like I'm erasing representation (even though I haven't even begun the draft, let alone her). I could just say "yeah, she's xavante" and include very little detail about that culture, including giving her a name that's not from it (JoJo has a lot of weird names already, so it would kinda fit either way), but that also feels cheap. Not sure if these feelings are justified.
Sorry if this came off as just a white person venting. I really don't want to mess up a marginalized group's representation, even if it's just in a little fanfic. Thank you all for reading this far.
I'm looking for a fanfiction where the MC is a female villain.
Female villain x female hero
Any suggestions?
Just curious really, what enjoyment does it bring for you?
For me, I like being able to offload my depression and issues onto a fictional character, or write a story that I wanted to see in the source material.
hello everyone!
i’m a bit obsessed with omegaverse/ABO and I’ve read quite a lot of tropes within different fandoms, but they never seem to focus on the development of the alphas.
as i’ve read a couple of “omega pretends to be alpha”, “omega gets in touch with their submissive side”, “omega is insecure with being an omega”, “omega just presented” tropes, I was wondering if anyone has recommendations for these tropes but regarding alphas? (any fandom will do)
thank you!!!!
Background info: I wrote this fic in 2014 for a then-tiny fandom. It was a multichapter fic exploring a particular trope that, at the time, no one had written for yet. It got quite a bit of attention, but I never finished it. By the time the fandom exploded thanks to an actor's newfound popularity, I had already left and had no plans on continuing that particular fic. I started getting a lot of comments focusing on the fact that the fic was unfinished- some very kind and hopeful, others quite rude and demanding. I still get them to this day. A few days ago I got another one of those nice comments hoping that I would pick this fic back up even though it has been so long, and it got me thinking about what (if anything) I should do about it, considering I'm definitely 100% not planning on finishing it (I mean, never say never, but I sincerely doubt it).
The (potential) plan: Posting the chapter I have written up (but never posted back in the day for some reason) and, in a separate chapter, my plot outline. Editing the description to make it clear this fic is officially abandoned and giving people carte blanche to do with my idea what they will.
My reasoning: I frequently think about all the drabbles/ideas/plot outlines/unfinished chapters hidden away in my (and other people's!) files that never see the light of day, and the fact that published fanfiction is really just the tip of the iceberg. Maybe it would be cool for people to get an additional glimpse of my metaphorical iceberg, to put some of that never-published content out there. Also, after a decade of constant "why is this not finished" comments, I guess I want to give readers some 'closure', if one could call it that? I feel like maybe "hey I'm not finishing this, but here is what I was planning on writing" is better than just an unfinished fic collecting dust. Maybe knowing where I was going with it would make the Abandoned Fic Experience TM slightly less disappointing.
I don't want this to come off as dumping my unfinished fic leftovers on the readers, but... I feel like that might be preferable to a completely abandoned fic? And that some people might even find it interesting? I don't know. Would you be super mega disappointed to get an update email for a 10 year old fic only for it to be one (1) actual chapter, a plot outline, and definite confirmation that this thing isn't getting finished anytime soon?
Also, I should note that I know authors don't owe anyone a finished fic- those "wow this would be good if YOU ACTUALLY FINISHED IT!!!" comments stopped bothering me long ago- but I feel like maybe it would be nice to do this sort of thing anyway. Really close that particular chapter once and for all, you know?
TL;DR: Stopped updating a fic 10 years ago, still constantly get "author pls finish :(" type comments, considering just posting whatever I have of the fic in my files (including a finished unposted chapter and my loose plot outline) and declaring it officially abandoned. I'm hoping this would be preferable to the fic just sitting there and future readers having no idea where I was going with it or whether I was still writing it/planning on coming back to it. Would this be a decent thing to do, or is there something shitty about it that I'm not seeing? Would you prefer this to a completely abandoned fic that just... stops?
Do you ever get a cool idea for a one shot, think it’s going to be 5-6k words tops, you have the important scenes in your head, you know how it ends, it’s gonna be great. You start writing, decide that, yeah okay, maybe it’ll be more like 12k words, whatever, it’s fine.
You keep thinking about it as you write, because of course you do, so you notice opportunities to make the story more interesting, explore additional themes and concepts, and suddenly you realise what you thought would be the entire story is basically just the first arc. Good job, you’re writing a novel.
Because this happens to me every time.
I know that I could just… not write the novel and stick with the one shot, but unfortunately, once I start thinking about it, I want to see how the whole story ends (I’m primarily a discovery writer).
Last time this happened, I actively tried to come up with a plot that would be fit for a one shot, with an element that would disincentivise me from stretching it out - so of course I figured out a way around it. So I thought, maybe I’m just really bad at coming up with plots that could and should be shorter stories.
Still, I’ve read so many amazing, self-contained stories at 2-6k words, and I just really want to write one. How do you come up with ideas for one shots? Do you have advice on how to keep things short?
I just spent 30-45 minutes digging thru all my docs trying to find a WIP I knew existed, only to finally find out I had titled it "idk what to call this". Don't make the same mistake I did. I almost panicked that I had accidentally deleted it at some point.
I have never wrote on Ao3 before but many people have told me my writing is Ao3 worthy so im on now but the problem is that i'm not good at tagging,my work is about one of the characters genderfluid and going through somec dysphoria and there bf helps them, its supposed to be a soft smut but i don't know how to tag with good tags-, if someone can help that would be amazing
Have any of you ever submitted a fanfic you wrote as a paper for a class? Did you submit the fic just as it was or did you change it slightly before handing it in?
My biggest struggle is this, I have a pairing that has a British character that I really love. (The pair, not the character.) So I go and make the pair the focus of the story. But WAIT, I speak American English. And I don’t understand the accent at all, so I have to do TONS of research. Then, after, I still don’t understand ANYTHING. So, I usually make mistakes.
What are your biggest struggles? I’d like to hear them!
I absolutley love a good prison AU but I've ran out of them in my main fandoms. Does anyone have any good recs I could read potentially fandom blind?
