Rules:

  • Flairs Required - All posts must be flaired with the correct flair. Please report posts that have an incorrect flair.

  • Use the Megathreads - We have megathreads for Self-promo, Invite requests, and sometimes other special topics or events. Please keep these topics to their respective megathreads. We won't be allowing individual posts on these topics.

  • Personally Identifying Information - Please do not include personally identifying information (usernames, titles, etc) in your posts or comments outside of a work finding request or recommendation.

  • Don't search for works from here - Please do not try to find works mentioned in the subreddit (outside of work search posts of course) using the limited details in the posts. This is a form of brigading and keeps causing harassment issues and/or mass reporting problems. If someone breaks this rule by commenting on the work on AO3, please report it via modmail, not by reporting the post that lead to it with the report system. (We won't ask how you found out about said comment) Obviously doesn't apply to promo/exchange threads.

  • Fic/Work Search Rule - Please make your own post to look for a fic/work. Do not comment to ask people to help you find a fic/work on another person's post. It clutters things and makes it harder for everyone.

  • Moratorium on AI posts/comments - Only posts about actual updates related to AI (either affecting AO3 or things like copyright law) and posts about novel subjects that we haven't seen in the subreddit before will be allowed for the time being. Please search the subreddit before posting anything related to AI.

  • Research Studies - Research Studies are allowed to be posted here and you do not need to ask prior to posting. All posts are subject to normal sub rules. Please use the 'Research Studies' flair for all studies and/or results. Studies must be related to something fandom, literature, or sexuality/gender, etc. in some way. If you have questions, feel free to send modmail.

  • Moderator Discretion - We are very open to what kinds of things can be posted here but we leave most things up to moderator discretion. The mod team discusses most changes and moderating decisions and ultimately everything is on a case-by-case basis. There are too many edge-cases to account for every situation. If something becomes a continual issue we will make a written rule about it.

  • Spam Comment/Webnovel Posts Moratorium We are imposing a ban on making posts sharing that you got one of the webnovel spam comments. We are not banning posts asking about them though. This is just a ban on the posts where the OP clearly knows about the issue already and is just posting that they got one.

Should I let them do this???

So I just go this comment on one of my works and I don't know whether or not to let them do this. Like I want to, but I don't quite know what it is??? If anyone knows what it is and whether or not it is a good thing and could let me know, that would be great!

It feels like someone is ripping off our stories and I don’t know if it’s worth bringing up or if I should just ignore.

So, this all started out as an “oh boy! Two cakes situation!” One writer put out a fic with a niche plot and it inspired others (including myself) to write our own versions, either with the same characters or in my case different characters from the same fandom. OG writer was thrilled about this because again “two cakes!” (In this case, more like 5 or 6 haha) While the basic plot was the same and there were a few shared headcanons, every fic still seemed original.

One recently seems to just be copying every single plotline, even sometimes right down to specific lines and wording. Like, myself or someone else will put out a chapter then this writer will the next day and it’s the same plot, similar dialogue. Of the whole fic, they introduced two things that none of the others have but it’s still pretty clear that they are taking it past just being inspired.

No one else is saying anything, though I have noticed that there’s been a drop in the other writers for this plot commenting on the fic, as well as a decrease in comments overall. I usually don’t pay attention to these things but there was a serious decline to the point that it’s noticeable.

Is it worth saying anything? Should I just continue to ignore the fic? This isn’t detracting from my fic in anyway so I’m trying to let it go but it is a little annoying.

I get leaving a comment on AO3, but following me to another platform to ask for updates seems a bit much

Ngl my first instinct was to feel guilty and check the document I created for the next chapter half a year ago to see if it was postable to find the same 300 uninspired words I left last time. Considered writing something quick and post that but honestly, between college, several fandom events I've joined, and my own temporary waning interest in this specific story have made it so I currently have no words and would rather be on hiatus than post something I'm not proud of

... mind you they didn't even leave a comment on the actual fic

Is it legal to do written story roleplay with underage characters from books or movies?

There's a big roleplay community online, very much like fanfic except it's done collaboratively.

If both writers are adults, is it illegal to write stories together about characters that are underage if they engage in sex/dating at times? As an example, two male characters around 15 or 16 that are from a book or movie, but writing other stories with them about their lives including sexual content at times.

Would this be illegal? I know a lot of fanfic writers seem to write explicit stories about underage characters etc.

Anyone Else Get Annoyed w/ Fandom/Shipping Drama?

I'm sure we all have the same answer; yes.

But I'm talking about smth very specific. Such as when character relationships (platonic, familial, romantic, queerplatonic, etc) is left up to interpretation and everyone in the fandom argues over which is the “best” or “most hinted at” in canon.

Perhaps this is just the fandom I'm in rn. But if ur fandom has something similar, lmk! It’d be nice to know this fandom isn't the only one w/ absurd drama.

Best fics in your fandom

I’m not really sure if I’m doing this right but anyways I want to get into new fandoms and I have no idea where to start so I’m request your favourite fic in your favourite fandom.

The only thing I’m really picky of is r*pe (I don’t know if we can use the word on this) I can handle it in like past mentions but I really don’t want lots of details and if it a re-occurring thing that happens.

Thanks you. 😁:)

Checked my history on AO3 and found that 4 fics I read in 2023 were deleted.

How do I find them if I don’t remember their titles or authors? Kinda wished the history at least leaves behind the author’s username even if the fic is deleted.

Worst times when a fic wasn't technically tagged wrong but...?

You know those fics that aren't doing anything wrong with the tags, they have all the warnings and the tags make sense? But they left out some stuff, or set up expectations for something entirely different? What are the worst cases you have seen?

Here's mine: A fic with a summary something like 'X character has finally found his soulmate'.

The relationship tags were X and Y. Rest of the tags:

angst - fluff - alternate universe soulmates - first kiss - first time - love

So you'd think this is about X and Y getting together, right? Well... nope! It's about X and Y in their relationship, until X suddenly ghosts and dumps Y, turns out he found his soulmate, Z, and ends up with her. The fic ends with Y crying and being alone.

Like ?????? No tags of X and Z relationship, or anything to indicate this was a bad ending fic. And yeah technically they're not wrong. But man do I hate this author now.

I hate when fic writers use "trashing"

I've seen it enough times in multiple fics that I know it isn't a typo. And I don't understand it. Maybe it's something I'm missing or alternative spelling because otherwise it completely sucks me out of the story. Plus I can't find a definition in any context other than "throwing something into the trash," so I feel like I'm losing my mind.

I do not want to be thinking about when the garbage collectors are gonna be passing through my sector while I'm reading a 7k smut fic, thank you.

For clarification: yes, I know they were probably thinking of thrashing. And if it's a one-time thing, that's completely understandable. But I've seen a lot of fics use trash/trashing consistently throughout the entire fic.

Again, please educate me if I'm being dumb in some way because otherwise, I hate it so much.

I've seen some writers complain about comments like these, but...

I feel super happy about it. 🙂 I'm pretty sure it's my first "Next chapter?" nudge by a reader. And honestly, even if they were pushy and disrespectful, I'd still feel happy and motivated, and give the same response, although I'm definitely not holding the fic hostage.

(I haven't updated in 3 months because I want the next batch of upcoming chapters to be cohesive for that whole Year the chapters cover... It turned into a runaway fic. I didn't expect to be working on it this long.)

What makes "locking" fics from guest readers "safer" ?

I can't choose what to do, what are the actual pros and cons of locking fics ? Thank you in advance !

Edit : Same question about making them unavailable to search engines ?

Trigger warnings and surprise endings

I am new to fanfiction in general and AO3 in particular, so forgive me if I say anything that's off.

I've recently posted a 3K word one-shot that I love dearly. The whole plot revolves around a character living in denial that the love of his life committed suicide several years ago. Like, the denial is the plot, but it is sort of hinted at several times throughout the story, such that some readers might guess it in advance. That means, tagging a suicide warning kinda ruins the fun. On the other hand, not giving any warning also feels wrong. It is a heavy topic and I don't want to actually trigger real people with my silly little tale.

Among the archive warnings, I picked the "creator chose not to display warnings" and I also included tags like dark and angst in the fic description. What would be the best way to add a TW on suicide or MCD in this case?

Thank you 🤍

Cruel Prince AU fic where Jude & Cardan run away to New York?

I'm trying to remember the title of an AO3 story where Jude kills Valerian and she thinks she will be executed for the crime. Jude goes to find Cardan and makes him come with her to the human world together. They spend some time living on the streets in New York, where Jude gets chased down by a man and Cardan helps save her. Cardan also gets ill from the iron in the air. Eventually the rent an apartment and become friends with one of the neighbours, woman who’s dad has a jewellery store. Cardan gets a job working in the jewellery store, Jude gets a job as a security guard in the same mall. But Jude is considered too violent and gets fired by her sexist boss after she tackles a thief. That's the last point I read up to.

Tell me about the time(s) your characters didn't listen or your one-shot grew a plot

My best friend doesn't believe me that my dead dove one-shot grew a plot without my permission and that it happens all the time. Help me plead my case pretty please!

[Note: I'm not mad, there's no need for shade or snarkiness. I just want to prove a point.]
