I'm kind of bothered by some of the discourse around the FL in LBFD because there are male main characters who are just like her, without the feminine presentation, and nobody bats an eye. Bilbo Baggins has also never left his hometown and his house is his happy place. He seems harmless and he's definitely not a fighter (like his dwarven companions) but he is clever and uses guile to accomplish his goals. Yet he's also embarrassed by this, and thinks of himself as a very dignified and proper Hobbit. He feels intense homesickness frequently--the narrative repeatedly comments: "not for the last time!" Bilbo isn't an innocent, but he is rather ignorant of the world outside Hobbiton. He has to level up on the road, acquiring magic objects that assist him in his quest.
Now I'm not suggesting a pastiche here and the characters aren't completely alike. Orchid is very emotionally perceptive and has very strongly held beliefs and values that drive her actions. Whereas Bilbo is being nudged all along by Gandalf, the wise old wizard whom he loves and respects.
One thing I like about LBFD is that the characters are both more mature, but navigating a relationship for the first time. We see them continually have conflicts and work through them, have conflicts and work through them, using as much emotional intelligence as each of them is capable of bringing to bear on the situation. It's notable because often xianxia dramas have characters who are supposed to be hundreds of years old, but act very immature.
I'll admit the first time I watched this drama I wasn't in the best place emotionally and I really watched it in the context of having binged a LOT of trash and thinking this was just more trash that had to hit all the stupid notes and get paid. The show got my grudging respect by the end of it (of course I really did love the visuals and art direction from the beginning; they really took things to a higher level). On rewatch, I can see I was really blind and seeing the show through anger goggles. It's very unusual in a romance drama to see realistic (not concocted) conflicts and very nuanced and realistic (and respectful) communication. Of course the ML is a murderer and can be a bit rude at times, especially when he has no empathy, but this isn't one of those "red flags are sexy wink wink" kind of dramas. I've noticed that when they argue, they give each other the space to express themselves and they don't force answers or conclusions, but let the other person think about it and come back around.
Even the storytelling in other scenes displays a lot of grace and subtlety, for example when Orchid sees the Moon Tribe women wearing a certain flower and tries to imitate them. There's a lot of different ways those scenes could have been written.
I'm glad that we're all on a LBFD rewatch kick. I was going to let it run in the background for listening practice and ended up watching closely. Which is kind of funny because I thought I would NEVER rewatch this drama (plot too thin, don't like the genre, etc), but it is so good on rewatch. Don't be me, don't limit yourself.

I love Imperial Coroner and been dying to find another historical Forensic investigation type drama like it. Ended up finding Miss Truth, and it did not disappoint! It was soooo good! Everything I wanted that was like IC, I got more of it in MT. Quick breakdown of the similarities and differences between the 2 dramas...
The plot is about the same in both dramas where ML hold high rank position in investigation and FL is smart/genius forensic/coroner investigator. They both work and solve cases together, with mind mapping analysts and forensic methods. They also both have their own personal mysteries to solve.
The difference between the 2 is mostly the main leads.... IC has the sweet innocent leads/couple which is very different from MT. MT has the arrogant, bold leads that likes to argue and bicker all the time. They work well on solving mysteries/cases but they lack that "like minds think the same" like in IC.
For everything else that IC has, MT has it, but a lot more of it. ML in MT can fight, so there's a lot more action scenes. Romance(s)? Yea there's a lot more of that too >!love triangles +1!< There's more conspiracies, schemes, secrets and mysteries... and of course the drama is much thicker and everywhere in this one, keeps you on suspense most of the time. Some of the cases they work on is different from others I've seen so that was also a bonus.
Overall, while I wait for IC2.... this was a really good drama to fill my craving curious mind with more forensic investigations mysteries till then.
This is the discussion for episode 28 of Blossom so expect spoilers for this episode and those before it. If you are an express viewer please mark any spoilers beyond these episodes.
Episode 28
So I was wrong about the imperial exam being a plot point in the coming episodes, it is over by the 10 minute mark. Song Han won both the written and martial exams, using brutal means for the latter, even breaking someone’s leg. Maybe it was a subtitling issue, but Minister Lu seems to be Minister Mu in these episodes. As a prize for winning, he asks to fight a poisoned Song Mo, ending in a draw, and to marry the princess.
Gu Yu begs the Emperor to not marry the princess to Song Han, it seems those two are very close and often support each other. The Empress suggests titling another woman to princess and having her marry Song Han and plot logic does the rest of the work. Miao An Su is selected (a woman of trade!) and the rank she is given is Gongzhu!! For those unfamiliar this is the highest ‘princess’ rank and whilst historically commoners were given this rank, it was for marriages into foreign kingdoms, not for domestic marriages to a lovechild with good exam scores.
Song Han seems to change his mind about the marriage but Miao An Su says she’s willing and things go ahead. The wedding is awkward, with me being reminded how much I hate Miao An Su’s family, and Song Han imagining people sneering at him from every corner. His paranoia about being murdered also hasn’t stopped and he imagines Miao An Su trying to kill him twice, ending up strangling her. Their wedding night ends there.
Ji Yong knows a storm is coming and advises Dou Zhao to leave Song Mo, but she refuses. He’s the man she loves, and she’ll follow him to the end. I think that after all that has passed between them, Dou Zhao is much more reconciled to dying with Song Mo again, if it comes to it.
A secret evil meeting confirms that the man who killed Song Mo in the past life is Eunuch Wang and Song Han is officially welcomed into the evildoers club.
The residence is tense with Miao An Su’s new status, not helped by the egging on of the Empress’ official who has been sent to Miao An Su’s side. She also has a maid by her side who appears to be one of the women from the dental clinic. Because of the clash of royalty being above nobility vs. family hierarchy I’m pretty sure it was more common for Gongzhu to live in their own residence with their Fuma, so by what (logical) reason they are all in the Duke Ying residence I don’t know. Miao An Su at least has the back bone to stand up for Dou Zhao though.
Miao An Su and Song Han reconcile after the choking incident, but I’m sure we all noticed he only ate the snacks after she did (did Miao An Su notice though?). And their discussion and hug at the end makes me wonder if Miao An Su could be turned away from Dou Zhao after all.

So I gave into the hype and started watching Blossoms.
Honestly, I get that rebirth and revenge are new trends. It is one that I enjoy very much, in any form. I will eat it up. So I am already super biased. The acting and production are very good, so it just adds to the experience.
BUT
There are a few things just off when it comes to plot logic. Like, the FL is OP for no reason...she doesn't really need to. Like most of the time he have a 'why' when it comes to the rebirth, but here it seems like a fated meeting...like correcting the course so she could marry ML instead. Even then, she doesn't need a spy network or personal guards. Nothing happened to her in the prev timeline for her to be so cautious. [I am only in ep 8, so maybe I will get clarity later, but man she is OP in an annoying way].
Also, why in the world is there ONE provider for paper in the country, and that coincidently happens to be the same company that collects waste paper from almost all families in the capital AND is owned by the niece of a seedy official?
ALSO, WHY IS THE FORMIDABLE DING ARMY SUBDUED IN A SECOND BY A BUNCH OF 'SECRET' ARMY PEOPLE. Two of them happen to be Song Mo's personal guards...and they are taken down by women half their size and experience. Like...huh?
Also...it's a little weird that the emperess's can nephew get arrested fot beating up an officer (who wasn't even on duty) but has the freedom to come in and out of his cell, intimidate an interrogating authority to back off, untie a 'criminal' under interrogation, and just stay in the same prison until his BFF is released...all because someone he never met and had no reason to trust told him to? Also why are people accused got beating up and officer and those charged with treason in the same prison?
P.S.: Guys, I have watched it at normal speed with reliable subtitles and my Chinese is good enough that I can recognize what is being said to a certain extent. I am not skipping content and nor am I dumb and missing nuances. My points are still valid regardless. I will continue watching simply cuz it is fun.
As a Cdrama fan who's going to China in a few weeks, I plan to visit the locations where most historical dramas were filmed.
Has anyone here been to Hengdian World Studios? If so, do you know if their student discount also applies to foreigners or only to Chinese residences? Also, when buying a ticket, can I buy directly from their website's online booking or through their WeChat account?
After watching the first episode of Blossom, I got really excited and noticed it only had 3 episodes out so I decided to find the novel to read while it finishes so I can binge it. (This was when it first aired) I'm currently in chapter 200 something and I wanted to share that I wish I had just watched the drama itself 🥲 - I'm in too deep to stop now.
The story starts with Dou Zhao at 1-2.5 years old and I am so glad that episode 1 did not start there! The amount of characters that get introduced, the explanation that came with every single character - I'm exhausted! I've never read a novel so slowly. Has anyone seen a character map for this? Additionally, Songmo does not appear in the book until chapter 115! (400 some chapter to go!)
Many seem to be enjoying the drama so I'm very excited to watch it and see what they cut out and how they fix the narrative to pace it better. Wish me luck powering through this!
Now that Blossoms is a hit and Meng Ziyi and Li Yun Rui were given the opportunity to shine, who else should get a chance to be the leads in a drama? For me, I would love to see Wang Zhou Cheng and Liu Hai Kuan play the leads for once and not be stuck in supporting role hell forever.

The production team dropped a new OST music video《在人间》sung by Zhao Liangqi about half an hour ago. 在人间 can be translated as “In the World.” Along the River During the Qingming Festival Painting by Zhang Zeduan depicted 824 ordinary folk living their lives in the Song Dynasty. The OST music video shows reenacted scenes from Zhang's painting.
“A strange case of "the plum boat disappearing into a fairy" occurred in the Qingming market in the Northern Song Dynasty! Since then, it has caused a butterfly effect and serial cases, which almost shake the entire world situation. In Zhang Ze Duan's "A Picture of a River on the Qingming Festival", the fate of all the people in the picture is involved, and the conspiracy behind it has not yet stopped.

“Adapted from the novel "Qing Ming Shang He Tu Mi Ma" (清明上河图密码) by Ye Wen Biao (冶文彪).”
Synopsis from Baidu (loosely translated):
During the Northern Song Dynasty, a family of five with very different personalities, including Zhao Buyou (played by Zhang Songwen) and Wen Yue (played by Bai Baihe), lived in a corner of Que Er Lane in Bianliang City. Zhao Buyou was originally a clerk at the bottom of the Dali Temple, who only wanted to live an ordinary life, while his wife Wen Yue only wanted to buy a house and land. The family often quarreled but also lived happily. In an accident, the family was involved in the sensational Meichuan case. As the cases were solved one by one, the family members showed their abilities and embarked on a wonderful journey of solving cases while solving endless family problems and growing up. In the end, the family of five got to know and accept each other again, and each of them gained growth. They worked together to expose the hypocrisy and evil deeds of the mastermind behind the scenes, defending the happiness of their small family and protecting the well-being of the people of Bianliang.
I don't know, I saw this in Viki. Is it any good?
First thing to note is that I would not recommend watching that trash. Maybe hate watching but even for that, it‘s trash.
Quick summary: There are two women A and B who are best friends since childhood. A and B give birth to daughters on the same day. 18 years later, B abuses her daughter C until she is always covered in wounds and scars while doting on A‘s daughter D. It is implied that A married into a rich family and is cherished by her husband H while B married into a well off family and is now „raising“ her daughter on her own. B likes to abuse C physically and verbally in front of A. It is implied that C is a dropout while D is a prime candidate to enter Tshinghua University. On the day A‘s family is celebrating D acing her entrance exams, B reveals that she is D‘s biological mother and A is C‘s biological mother. Chaos ensues. People say she can‘t just swoop up a Tshinghua student and that A spent a lot of effort to nurture D. A is calm and quiet. D is shaken and H is oddly shocked immediately in protection mode. Because A is calm, C is angry and blames her for watching her get abused for 18 years and not comforting her now and jumps out of the window. She is injured. People blame A for driving her own daughter to suicide. A reveals that she knew about the switch and now people regard her as even more cold blooded. Then she shows video evidence that B actively swapped children at the hospital. Now H enquires if A is being threatened by B. B reveals that she actually hates A because even though they are best friends, A‘s life is way better than hers. H plays the loving husband until A reveals with evidence that H cheated on her with M (his moonlight) while she was recovering from child birth and that C is a test tube daughter between H and M. H used her as a substitute and surrogate without her knowledge. None of the girls are blood related to her. That‘s why she allowed the switch. H tries to stab A since she ruined her reputation and B takes the hit for A because her life isn‘t as good as she thought it was. B dies for A. H is arrested. When C wakes up, she is informed that she will be placed under CPS and thinks A her biological mother has abandoned her. So she ruins D‘s reputation online and says she is a fake daughter.
D is about to become the top new student but rumors have spread so she runs away. C and her friends bully D because „D stoles C‘s life“, A finds out and saves D. C insists she is A‘s daughter so she should abandon D and take her in and A reveals the truth. A also reveals that she was considering financially supporting C before but because of actions she will not do so. The End.
Rant: I don‘t like how A is blamed. She is not innocent but people are exaggerating her villainy.
First of all, A is a victim by H. Forced surrogacy is rape. She held no responsibility towards C whatsoever. Not only that but she is also the child of her husband‘s mistress that she also had to carry to term. A does not have to like C and has no responsibility towards her. She has every right to hate her. Stating that A had any larger responsibility to protect C than any other adult should is wrong. C is neither A‘s daughter nor her responsibility.
Secondly, A was not the only one who witnessed C‘s abuse and neglect. H witnessed it and told A to distance herself from bad influences, teachers and relative witnessed the abuse and nobody did anything. Not a single person reported the abuse or protect C. The entire system failed her. At least (and that‘s the even the bare minimum) A and D would always criticize B‘s treatment toward C. Nobody else was shown to do that. Everybody else turned a complete blind eye. So didn‘t expect A to be a saint.
Lastly C ruined her own chance. I feel less strong about this point but I will still make it. Abuse does not justify abuse. C and D were admittedly collateral damage in A‘s revenge. BUT that did not give C the right to bully D. Even if she was hurt, D was also a victim.
Quite frankly I can understand why A likes D over C although neither are her own blood. D is a product of her environment and so is C. D was raised in a „loving“ family afforded all the opportunities. Therefore could afford to be nice and kind and most importantly not be a brat. Plus without being clouded by many grudges (after all the child B is abusing isn’t hers), A raised D for 18 years. There’s bound to be some affection.
C on the other hand has been abused by her mother all her life and then the person who provided her with a tiniest bit of warmth turned out to be her mother she became obsessed. Not with D‘s family/ life but only A as a mother. When this person rejected her, she snapped at the other only person who had been kind to her D.
In conclusion don‘t watch this Chinese short Drama it‘s a dumpster fire and doesn‘t make much sense.
So after 2 period dramas, I tried something modern to take a little break, and I saw of clip of this drama somehwere so I just decided to try this out. And it is a good drama. The pacing is great. It does not feel draggy at all. The premise is great as well. The characters are not the best. They are good, don’t get me wrong, but the side characters feel a little bit plain in some scenes. Not a big deal tho. The main characters have depth…..and some stupidity. For those of you have watched this, would know. I am currently on ep 11, and yes the ML has done made some bad decisions by letting his anger take over. But at least the character recognizes it as his fault and is trying to be better. The FL on the other hand has this one “friend” who the ML hates. They have fought multiple times over this friend. And I understand that the ML should be understanding and not trying to control who FL’s friends are, I feel like it would be so much easier for the FL to just end one friendship. I say this only because she is interested in getting back with the ML as well. My only annoyance is that the show recognizes the ML’s problems but never addresses how the FL too could just leave this one slimey friend. And she is so oblivious to his intentions!!! Smh. Anyways, this was my little rant. Thanks for joining!
At first it starts as a typical romance drama and then it gets super dark. There was a scene that even gave me the chills!! The acting of FL is SO GOOD!! This is a good criminal thriller with romance on the side and the typical Doctor FL / Police ML is also a good touch. It deserves more attention.

My Impressions/Thoughts
1. Re-introducing: Zhang Qiniang 章七娘
While it's likely not the first time for us to encounter a crazy evil female character with a tragic past, you gotta give it to 张馨予 Zhang Xinyu for capturing the role so well. Her admiration and envy of the love that Wen's found, her struggle between living as a commoner or in luxury, her love for beauty cultivated by the darkest and cruelest methods... She's strong and fearless, because she's got nothing else to lose.
2. Everything Else
Everything else paled in comparison to Qiniang!! Well except the tragic lives of the commoners that are starting to be revealed more in the drama. From Wu San ("cripple sister") to Chun Xi (wife of the deceased Kang Qian), Xiao-yi and Sun Bo, it seems like there's really no way to escape if the rich and powerful wants to take anything away from you.
Note that in the original novel, the story happened >!about ten years before the fall of the North Song Dynasty (to invasion from the 金 Jin people of the north) and Dongjing (also known as Bianjing) city was ransacked during the process.!<
I thoroughly enjoyed this drama. It stands out among modern dramas and feels reminiscent of Doctor Who's scarier episodes, where the Doctor and companion explore different times or planets.
I also kept calling it spy-realm in my head and couldn't change that even knowing it stands for spirit.
Questions:
!did nobody question the fact that a npc virtual being can exit the game and enter the supposedly real world?!<
Demon Box Confusion:
!Why did RLZ resign himself to die? He knew they had the scissors and that he had a higher purpose. Why give up?!<
Plot Holes? My memory of the later plots is freshest so I’ll talk about those I remember:
!LDY’s Death: How did LDY die? He walked out of the door injured, which previously was shown to allow characters to survive. What happened to him between exiting the door and dying?!<
Despite some unanswered questions, plot holes, and weaker aspects, the drama was a unique and enjoyable experience. Its creativity and intrigue outweighed its flaws, though a more satisfying ending could have elevated it further.
The production is so good! The couple lead are gray characters, the story is very realistic and lastly, the slight FYI before end credits. At least in episode 2, production team utilized almost 300 people to recreate the scene at rainbow bridge. It's also interesting to know that gdp during song dynasty has high.
As we have new members joining all the time, and as we still get reports about spoilery posts, I think a weekly reminder about the importance of marking your posts with spoilers tags is in order.
If your post or comments contains discussions of major plot points (especially about deaths and endings), mark your post with spoiler tags or it will be removed. Here's how you do it.
This will work in Fancy Pants Editor mode, so switch to the mode by clicking on the “Switch to Fancy Pants Editor” button located at the top right corner of the text box.
To mark your entire post as spoiler-y:
Note: Your post will now have the symbol Spoiler next to the title.
To mark content on the text of your post body using the Fancy pants editor:
To mark your post as a spoiler:
To mark a comment with spoiler tags:
Use this syntax to mark spoilers on mobile: >!spoiler text!<
This will hide the text between the exclamation marks and display the spoiler text when clicked.
DO NOT include spoilers in the post titles
Make sure that your post title does not have spoilery plot points. For example, posts with titles such as "Love Show - everyone died!" or "Love Show - our main couple finally kissed in episode 20!" will be instantly removed, regardless of how many comments are under it.
DO include the name of the show in the title of the post
That said, please don't post overly vague titles. Please ensure that your post title contains the show's name at least. Imagine someone taking a chance to read the post only to be spoiled for a show they didn't want to be spoiled for.
Titles such as "A review" or "The ending of the show" does not tell you what show is being talked about. Even if they are marked spoilers, they will be removed.
Add spoiler tags to spoilery comments
If you're discussing a Show's plot point in a post unrelated to the Show, please tag your spoilers with spoiler tags, especially if you're dropping the comment on a post that has nothing to do with the Show.
Although I'm generally more lenient with comments with non-spoiler-tagged comments in posts marked as "spoilers", comments without spoiler tags under a post that has nothing to do with the show will be removed.
Posts such as Episode Discussions, discussions about a show's ending must be marked as spoiler or it will be removed.
What it said.
That's it!
Happy discussing!
Edit: I mean XianXia not Wuxia
It’s was perfect honestly I haven’t really watch any cdramas(or any asian dramas really) in a hot minute bc lately nothing hits the way it used to but the acting, cinematography, chemistry, etc. was amazing Ester Yu acted amazing and so did the male lead(he was so cute too). The story starts off pretty fast and sorta continues at the same pace for the until probably episode 15 I think, there wasn’t really any love triangles (well there sorta was but not really bc it only lasted like 2-3 episodes) but it was a great show that i finished in a day
This show also had a lot of heartwarming moments definitely towards the end
I really loved his gray hair but if he has to be poisoned for it, I don't want it anymore 🥲🥲 I hope they find a cure for him
P.S I love this edit a lot 💓 credit to ajinde_iye on tiktok
With CDramas airing the way they do, with multiple episodes per week and all at once, it's tough keeping up with them or watching them when they air. So most of us have resorted to putting them on our "to watch" list and coming back to them later.
Well, what drama are you finally catching up on? It may have aired just last month, or years ago. Let us know and do you think the drama is worth watching even after all this time?
Note: If you are discussing plot points or events that others may not yet have watched, please make sure to use spoiler tags. Consider also sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") as this thread fills up quickly.

You can also find some of these posts pinned when you sort the sub via what's "Hot". However, as things come unpinned all the time, and there's only the option to pin two posts at a time, we'd suggest that you use the sidebar buttons instead to navigate to the posts.
