After seeing the score after the IU blowout (combined with the season in its entirety) I started wondering if it could be legally argued that gross non-performance could constitute “cause” during termination proceedings or at least be considered as part of a reduced buyout?

1. Defense had no answers for the machine that is Indiana football offense which marched to 582 total yards and 66 points.
2. Offense couldn't handle the heat from The Hoosier Defense. All the offense could muster was 67 total yards of offense, 0 points, and 0 3rd down conversions.
3. This team has plenty of good players. The focus going forward will be keeping these good players at Purdue for next season. This will be a tall order. Perhaps one too tall.
4. 5-19 in two seasons leading Purdue football, 3 shutouts in year two, Went winless all Autumn long in 2024 (Purdue's lone win came in the final weekend of August), loss of highly rated recruits, gargantuan levels of regression in one season, and mismanged player development. The biggest question facing Purdue Athletics right now is Buyout aside Can you truly afford to keep Ryan Walter as head Coach for another season? (I like Ryan Walters, but personally after tonight, I can't see how they can believe he can turn things around)
5. This loss to Indiana was the worst loss in Purdue athletcis history and this season arguably was the worst season in Purdue football history. This football program faces an uncertain future filled with too many questions and too few answers.

On a closing note, I didn't expect this program to win enough games to qaulify for a Bowl game this season due to the brutal schedule. That being said, never did I expect this Boilermakers football team to regress and take massive steps backwards this season. I thought thy would be more competitive even in the toughest of games. I was terribly mistaken. I feel great pain for the players of this football team and the fans who have supported and stuck with this team from start to finish this season. The players and the fanbase deseve better. Coaches and The Athletic Department need to take a good look at themselves in the mirror and hold themselves accountable because they let the team down big time. So much work to be done before next season. Sadley things will get worse before they get better. Props to the players on the team who never gave up and kept playing hard for the full 60 minutes each game. And huge thanks to the seniors who will be graduating with their degree from Purdue and best wishes in the future. Trey Kaufman Renn continues to thrive in a life after Zach Edey

• In two games, TKR had 47 points, 21 rebounds, and 5 assists
• He's truly improved his conditioning and everything NC State and Ole Miss threw at him, he handled with precision.
• Can get a tough bucket when you need it and tough to score on in the paint. There's plenty that Trey Kaufman Ren does that makes this team stronger.

Myles Colvin is coming of age in his sophmore season

• His defense in both games was very very good and he looks to be improving on the glass snatching rebounds.
• Palyed a massive role in The Boilermakers holding on to beat Ole Miss. That Bcuket he scored to seal the game was pure Colvin in the clutch.
• Myles's situational awareness and basketball iq has also improved alot. Not only is he the most improved player on the team, He's becoming a secret weapon of the Boilermakers in more ways than one.

One could say alot more was learned about the toughness, grit, and poise of this team.

• Against The Wolf Pack, The Boilermakers started slow, but kept calm, took the lead, and kept a controlled pace in the second half.
• The Boilermakers had a strong first half in the second game, but The Rebels would give Purdue fits in the second half on both sides of the ball. The Boilermakers were in trouble, but they showed resilience and were able to fight back and earned a hard fought win against a terrific Ole Miss team led by Chris Beard.
• Both games were good tests of the resolve of the Purdue Boilermakers. This young team had enough to go the distance and win another feast week tournement.

Things to improve on.

• Once more, This team needs to clean up turnovers.
• This Purdue team may be one that will play with an okay defense all season long, however both paint and 3 point defense leave plenty to be desired.
• Free throws always make a difference in the out come. Let's keep working hard on Free throws.

Conclusion

• While there is still plenty of growing pains to come, This younf Boilermakers basketball team is handling all that comes with a difficult schedule very well to the best of their ability. They have faced quite a bit of adversity thus far and are facing it well.
• Looks like going with The small ball lineup of Smith, Loyer, Kaufman Renn, Heide, and Colvin is doing wonders for this team. This lineup allows the Juniors to shine and sophmores like Cam Heide and and Myles Colvin To contiue building confidence. Matt Painter has made good adjusments since the Marquette game.
• Time for this team to return from San Diego and back to the grind. Next Up, The Boilermakers of Purdue play their first B1G road game of the season at Penn State adn will face The Nittany Lions. 1. Braden Smith didn't score a single point in this game yet Purdue still put up 80 points and won big. Congrats to Braden on 500 career assists.
2. Camden Heide is starting to find his rythm.
3. Myles Colvin returned to his scoring prowess in this game and contiues to be arguably Purdue's most improved player.
4. Really liked the efforts the Boilermakers had from the centers. Caleb Furst, Will Berg, and Raleigh Burgess all played pivotal minutes in this game.
5. Still plenty to work on for both sides of the ball. With that said, Holding Marshall (and with the help of missed shots and errors) to just 45 points gives thie Boilermaker defense something good to build on. Onto The Rady Childrens Inventational tournament in San Diego where Purdue will play North Carolina State in a Final 4 rematch. Boiler Up Hammer Down!

Hudson Card had one of his better games this season.

• 26-47, 342 yards,1 touchodwn and 1 interception
• While Card wasn't perfect and held unto the ball to long at times, holy cow he made some unreal plays.
• This was a game where Hudson was doing truly everything in his power to win this game for Purdue. Just wasn't meant to be.

Max Klare continues to show his potential to be an NFL tight end.

• 7 catches for 83 yards against the spartans
• He shown from time to time that he has a fantastic combination of speed and strength along with some athleticicsm. And can't forget his great hands He showed more of all of this tonight.
• Despite everything that has gone wrong this season, Max Klare refuses to stop balling and I salute him for this.

The Boilermakers had a golden oppotunity tonight to get a huge road win. that slipped away due to mistakes

• Too many dropped passes on a final drive will do a team in.
• Offense has to score more points in the first half. Also can't keep kicking oursleves with missed field goals.
• Defense needs to play more discplined football. They did better in the second half, but can't always let emotions boil over on the field.
• I feel terrible for Jahmal Edrine. He had a very good game tonight, but dropping a deep bomb in which he was going to score off of is going to hurt him inside for months to come.

Other observations.

• Ryan Walters was showing alot of heat on the sidelines tonight. The officials were in his line of fire in this game
• Tale of two halves for The Defense. First half was not so good, in the second half there was more fight in the Boilermaker defense.
• One can make the case that Dillion Theineman should have had his first interception on the season. In this game Dillon looked strong.

Conclusion

• It was good to see this Purdue team have a shot to win tonight. Sadley pain and heartbreak is what this team came away with tonight.
• I expect to get some flak for this, but for this game I actually felt bad for Ryan Walters and of course this whole team. In this game, he really was trying his best and giving his all to will this team to victory and end the season with somewhat of a high. He most likely won't return in 2025, but damn he and the team got punched hard in the gut.
• One game remains. Battle for The Bucket in Bloomington with The #5 ranked Indiana Hoosiers. Boiler Up!

Absolutely pathetic performance. Hard to decide if the defense or offense is worse.

Even if IU loses to OSU they’re still getting into the tourney. If Purdue beats them it will be the nail in the coffin for their chances.

It would be the funniest shit to ever happen in the history of college football. Please, God. I need this.

Tough first loss on the season. 5 takeaways

The Boilermakers made far too many errors on offense to win this game.

• Purdue had 15 turnovers on offense, 12 more than they did vs. Alabama.
• Plenty of self inflicted wounds in this game for the Boilermakers. Too many times this team forced passes and shots. The Golden eagles made them pay in points off of steals.
• Marquette deserves alot of credit for making the night a living hell for The Purdue offense.

This was a night were many shots did not fall for the Boilermakers

• The team made just 20 field goals and just 6 threes on the night. (The Golden Eagles also deserve some credit for driving Purdue away from the 3 point line.)
• Clean looks were hard to come by thanks to Marquettes defense. That said many of the shots inside the arc were forced.
• The missed shots placed pressure on the Purdue defense which proved tonight to be too much to overcome. This young team will have to learn how to find ways to win when the shots arn't falling

The Center postion is still an area of concern for this basketball team.

• It really hurts to see Will Berg struggling with the minutes he's getting. (And with the samll things on defense, rebounding, and catching passes)
• Caleb Furst has had some productive minutes and Raleigh Burgess has plenty of potential. One will only be able to do so much and the other is still green.
• Trey Kaufman Renn is The Boilermaker's best option playing center or the 5.

Other observations

• The Boilermakers need to improve on free throw percentage
• Rebounding wise, Purdue was better in this game than their first 4.
• The Boilermakers had just 6 different players score points.
• Defense still needs plenty of improvement though the offense didn't help either tonight,
• Before this loss, The Boilermakers had won 39 straight non conference games.

Conclusion

• A difficult loss to take, but a loss that can only help this team improve going forward. And a young team like this Purdue team will have games like this where not too much goes right. Gaining experince matters.
• I really like it when Coach Painter schedules tough NCAA torunament teams like Marquette. Teams like the Golden Eagles will test Purdue basketball by attacking weakensses. Tough as it is, it's one of the better ways for this team to correct mistakes and bad habits. Iron sharpens iron. A tip of the hat to Shaka Smart and Marquette. They deserved the win tonight.

1. It didin't matter wether Penn State threw or ran the football. Either way, The Boilermakers defense had no answers for Penn State's offense.
2. The Purdue offense went just 5 of 14 on 3rd down conversions. Just another indication of the lack of consistent rythm for the Boilermaker offense this season.
3. Max Klare without doubt plays like an NFL caliber tightend and had a big game against the Nittany Lions. I can only hope he will find reason to return to Purdue to continue playing football for the Boilermakers.
4. I'm sure the Athletic department is asking themsleves wether or not the buyout of Ryan Walter's contract is too steep. What they need to ask themselves is can this program truly go another year with Ryan Walters at the helm. I wanted Walters to have success in West Lafayette, but I believe this program can't afford another year led by Ryan Walters and the team beleives this too.
5. Brutal loss in the Final home game of the season and a tough way to thank the Seniors for all they have done. Focus on finishing the season strong. Onto Michigan State. Boiler Up!

Player of The Game - Max Klare

....for Purdue to finally fire Walters? He's solidly in Darrell Hazell territory and keeping him around just keep digging the program's grave. We're going to keep losing recruits as the weeks go on and we're likely to lose any decent players in the offseason.

To those on this reddit feed who for years wanted to move on from Matt Painter, and they were legion, you can see the alternative.

To those who still complain that Painter doesn't make adjustments, and there are many of you here, you can see now see what a coach who doesn't make adjustments looks like.

Nate Oats, who is widely considered a top tier coach, admitted in a press conference, that he does not scout opponents. Admitted to having no clue that TKR had the ability to score in the post. Mind you, Purdue played his team last year.

Nate Oats, who is on everyone's short list for coaching hires, admitted in a press conference, that he was not aware that Mackey Arena got loud. That he had no clue what his team was walking into, much less giving Purdue enough respect to care to prepare his team.

That's the modern coach. 10% press conferences, 10% brown-nosing national reporters, 80% recruiting, 0% coaching, 0% preparation. Just go out, get/pay the best players, and let them play. We know he doesn't monitor his players off the court, nor does he discipline his players.

We Boiler fans need to understand there are two approaches in today's college athletics.

1. Have a coach that is great at game prep, and better at recruiting/developing players that fit their system.

2. Have a coach, and more importantly an athletic department and fan base, willing to spend millions to buy the best players, mash them together, and hope for the best. And, when that doesn't work, raise more millions to buy better/different players, mash them together and hope for the best.

Trey Kaufman Renn Was undaunted, focused, and in full control.

• 26 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists
• Trey's finesse was on display all game long. He took some of the finest jump shots I've ever seen him take and was an absolute bruiser in the paint and on defense. The Crimison Tide had no answers for Trey Kaufman Renn all night.
• Kaufman Renn did a great job keeping his focus even witht the fouls piling up. The Boilermakers are a tough team to beat with TKR balling out with energy and passion like he did tonight. On a side note, it may be best to keep Trey at The 5.

Go ahead, underestimate Braden Smith and Fletcher Loyer at your own peril

• These two combined for 34 points, 12 assists, and 8 rebounds.
• Another game where braden Smith was everywhere with the ball for all the right reasons and made some beutiful fade shots and jump shots.
• Fletcher Loyer looks like he has found and other gear inside the arc and consistency in his shooting early this season and has yet to cool off.
• Braden Smith contiues to lead the way and Fletcher Loyer contiues to burn down opposing defenses with his improved scoring prowess.

C.J Cox Buy Stock Now!

• 11 points on night including 2 huge threes that one can say gave the fans the energy to blow the roof off of Mackey
• In addition to the spark plays, Cj showed more of that hustle he plays with on defense and in attacking the ball. This man always wants the ball and his efforts show this.
• As evident in this game, Boilermakers nation has fallen for C.J. Cox. These fans love a guy who gives it his all for the full 40 and CJ contiues to do this. The stats don't always tell the story. This young gun is a hard worker and is honoring another fan favorite Mason Gillis who made Number 0 a fan favorite number. Given time and experince, I think this guy will be a Boilermaker legend.

So many spectacular obervations

• The Boilermakers tonight got a lot of balance from the bench including critical contributions from the centers Claeb Furst and Raleigh Burgess.
• Myles Colvin didn't have any of his explosive highlight reel scoring plays in this game, but in an unexpected and awesome twist, his biggest highlight was his tremendous defense against one of the best point gaurds in the nation in Mark Sears
• Great to see Camden Heide on the scoring sheet again and making glue guy plays too.
• The Boilermakers where 56% from 3 and committed just 3 turnovers in this game.
• Still have plenty of work to do in keeping the Defensive glass clean. Rebounds beneffited Alabama.

Conclusion

• I've been to a game at Mackey Arena before and I will always believe that Purdue fans are the best. Tonight Mackey was electric and Boilermaker nation was elite. Oh my God, Mackey, tonight you were at legendary levels of all great things. Kudos To Makcey Arena.

This game is proof that Braden Smith is leading the charge for Purdue this season

• Braden Smith has a fantastic focus in terms of getting as many guys involed in the offensive rotations as possible. Tonight he was also our best rebounder.
• While he's been far from perfect so far this season, Braden looks poised to step out of the shadow of Zach Edey and make his case for being a contender for player of the year in the Big ten and college hoops.

Trey Kaufman Renn and Fletcher Loyer are playing with a new fire lite inside themselves.

• These two combined for 34 points and 6 assists.
• Trey Kaufman Renn has learned well from Edey on being a force in the paint. He's worked hard on his shots and taking those layups under pressure.
• Buffing up in the offseason is paying off for Fletcher Loyer so far. Loyer looks more confident driving into the paint and is doing a fine job drawing fouls to the benefit of the team.

There was Plenty of good from other Boilermakers that went around.

• Early in this season, Myles Colvin looks like one of the most improved players on the court for the Boilermakers on both offense and defense.
• Welcome to the new season Camden Heide! Great to see Heide had a big second half aginst the bulldogs and hopefully his confidence is all uphill going forward.
• First game with double digit points scored for C.J Cox. Get him experince and he will continue to bloom. This young man has great upside and promise.

Oh man so much for this young team to work on

• Rebounding, rebounding, and more rebounding. This teams needs to work harder on the glass. Lack of strong rebounding led to easy buckets in the paint and in transition.
• It's a good thing the offense has plenty of fire power because this the defense has a long way to go. It also doesn't help that the Boilermaker will struggle with rim protection with the absence of Daniel Jacobsen.
• 10 turnovers is too many. Let's work hard to bring that number down. Also need to work on the full court press once more.

Conclusion.

• Tip of the Hat to Yale. That's a team that could be back in the NCAA torunament as Ivey League Champs. They are very gritty and good.
• Not too many easy contests for the Boilermakers this season and that's a very good thing for the development of this young team. Tougher contests mean more to learn and work on.
• Next Up, a great test awaits the Boilermakers when The Alabama Crimson Tide comes to Mackey. Rematch from Toronto between two Final 4 Teams from last season. The Boilermakers will need to practice hard this week to get themsleves ready for a tough battle. Boiler Up Hammer Down!

I’m considering driving down from Chicago on Saturday and bringing my 3 and a half year old son to the game. Are there any issues bringing a kid that age? He went to a game at northwestern last year without issue. It’ll just be the two of us.

1. The Purdue offense moved the ball plenty of times against The Buckeye defense, sadley they couldn't finish at all in the redzone.

2. Ryan Walters needed to coach more aggressively in this game espescially when The Boilermakers had 4th and goal or were in the red zone.

3. Defense had no answers for The Buckeyes offense. Of course Purdue's offense hung the defense out to dry too with the errors.

4. Happy to see Devin Mockobee contiue to give it his all in this lost season. And Dillon Thieneman played hard in this game too.

• Gicarri Harris had some sick passes in this game which led to points. He will contiue to improve ball distribution with experince.
• Despite missing some easy layups, I really like what Raleigh Burgess brings to the Purdue Boilermakers in terms of toughness, mobility and athletcism.
• I was suprised that CJ Cox wasn't out on the floor alot in the second half. And I hope Daniel Jacobsen isn't too badly hurt.

Things to improve on

• This team needs to work harder on the glass and rebound the ball
• Yes this team is young, but avoiding scoring droughts of 7 plus minutes will help them alot
• 13 turnovers is too many. Let's improve on this. Also Free throws.

Other observations

• Caleb Furst had a very good second half with 8 points. I beleive he will be a underrated contributor for this team this season. Experince talks.
• Though he wasn't perfect, Will Berg played some valuable minutes in the second half.
• The Boilermakers took strides forward on defense.

Conclusion.

• It's still early in this season, however this team is far from playing it's best basketball for now. Plenty more to work on.
• There areconcerns and so far the growing pains are very evident. It's going to take some time to build up the chemistry between the veterens and freshman.

Fletcher Loyer led the charge tonight for Purdue Basketball.

• Scored 21 points and kept hitting Big time 3's for Purdue
• Loyer did a terrific job drawing contact and fouls. Fletcher is also underrated when it comes to driving to the basket as seen in this game.
• While this is only the first game of the season, Fletcher will have his number called alot this season.

In addition to Fletcher Loyer, Purdue's veterens did plenty of damge on the court.

• Braden Smith was focused all night on getting others involved in the offense with 15 assists
• Trey Kaufman Renn continues to show growth in poise, attacking the paint and scoring 15 points
• Braden Smith wasn't lying when he said this is full of shooters. Myles Colvin is one of them and looks poised for a big sophmore jump.

The Boilermaker newcomers showed plenty of promise in this game.

• While it's safe to say the new big man is green, Daniel Jacobsen played a very good second half. He will continue to improve as he gets more court action and of course more time in the eight room.
• It looks The Boilermakers have something special in CJ Cox. This young gun already understands the Boilermaker work ethic espcially on defense.
• While it wasn't the best debute game for Gicarri Harris, I beleive we will see more of him and plenty of good things from him in the games ahead. Another guy that plays hard.

So much to work on for the next game.

• Can't afford to turn the ball over 16 times each game. Value the rock.
• There are guys who can play defense on this team, but it will take time for this team to build a consistent rythm on defense. Same with the offense. Just have to keeping hammering away. Chemistry is key.
• The Boilermakers will face plenty of teams this season with athletes like The Islanders of Corpus Christi. (And credit to them for playing hard) How the handle the pressure of these teams will be key in how far they go this season. The Islanders gave the Boilermakers fits all night so it's important for Purdue to get stronger in facing athletic teams.

Conclusion

• Not a pretty win for Purdue and there are some things to worry about. With that said, this was the first game in the post Zach Edey era. And in this game, it was also clear that Matt Painter was testing a vast amount of lineups on court.
• It'll be interesting to see what lineups Matt Painter has in mind for the next game based on tonight. For now it's back to the grind that is practice for these Boilermakers.
• This is only the beginning. Next Up, Purdue hosts Northern Kentucky at Mackey arena. Boiler Up Hammer Down!

Player of Then Game - Fletcher Loyer

I didn't proof read and was watching TV while typing...but some quick thoughts:

Team: It seems clear that the team is trying to figure out how the offensive is going to flow. Many times they were stagnant and it looked a bit off. Handoffs at the top of the 3 looked rough. Apparently the Islanders are known for their ability to turn team over and that showed. One thing that scare me is that the other team looked more athletic at most positions, even though they were smaller. The help defense looked like total crap tonight. Our rotations are going to need a ton of work which isn't too surprising given all the changes. Free throws were ugly but primarily because of Berg.

Smith - Got to be more aggressive looking for his own shot. I know he is trying to get a lot of new players involved, but he can't shoot as little as he did. He had tons of great passes.

Kaufman - Too many turnovers and plays that could have been turnovers...He had some nice post moves and a couple really good passes. Defense was decent but good abused a couple times.

Jacobsen - He is somewhat slow and weak, but we pretty much already knew that. He showed nice touch on some shots and free throws looked good. I liked what I saw when he was going after blocks. He is definitely the starter at center but still raw.

Loyer - Thought he looked the most consistent of any player all game. He needs way more volume though with his shooting ability. I would have to watch again to notice what his defense was like.

Harris - He was aggressive on defense without fouling but no real standout moments. He was almost invisible on offense which could lead to teams helping off of him and putting more pressure on Smith.

Heide - If you didn't know he got in the game, I wouldn't blame you. He had a could good rebounds but didn't do much else. It feels like he isn't confident in his offensive game in the slightest.

Burgess - Not many minutes and didn't do much...

Furst - He was in the game for a couple minutes and looked good on both ends. He had a nice offensive move and a great block. I could see him getting serious minutes at times this season as the backup center.

Berg - Well, he has some moves around the hoop, but I'm not sure what else he brings at this point. He doesn't look like much of a shot blocker and is too slow for bigs that are remotely athletic. Good lord he can't hit a free throw.

Cox - Dog. He is going to be a defender that teams absolutely hate playing against. His shot is smooth as butter and he doesn't mind shooting it. Handles could use some work.

Colvin - Hot in the first, cold in the second. More than happy to shoot when he is open which is more than I can say about others. His handles still look very yikes. Like Loyer, I would have to watch again to see what his defense looks like.

Missed opportunity for a win. 5 tkaeaways

1. This loss is truly one that falls all on the shoulders of Ryan Walters.

• The Boilermakers could have won this game in regulation. Bad play calling doomed Purdue's short final drive in regulation.
• Bad playcalling in overtime is one thing, but going for it all on 4th and 6th instead of kicking the field goal is asinine.
• There were times in this game where this team lacked focus on making plays and seemed more concerned with getting calls. And this falls on Ryan Walters. There is talent on this football team and Walters has let the guys down.

2. Purdue football needs to get away from the 2 QB system for the good of the long run.

• I'm glad Hudson Card looked very good retuning from his 2 week absence throwing for over 200 yards and a touchdown, however there were moments where he struggled throwing the football. And on Purdue's final drive of regulation, he held onto the ball too long on first down. Keeping him in the game for the final drive made sense based on how he was playing, but still in crucial moments he struggles and I'm not sure he did enough to get the starting job back.
• Ryan Browne should have had more looks early in the game. And being honest, I want to see him start the next game and play the majority of the game because his development is crucial for the future of this team. This is my opinion and I'll die on this hill
• In fairness to these qbs, Coaching is the big reason why playing 2 qbs will do little good for this football team. It's too late for Purdue football in 2024 and I don't think Ryan Walters knows 100% what he is doing here.

3. While the Defense wasn't perfect, this unit did everything it could to keep Purdue in the ball game.

• The Defense struggled in the first half, in the second half they showed all the fight they had. They bent but didn't break until overtime.
• The Defense did well against the wildcat passing attack, but the running attack overwhelmed the Boilermakers all game. 3rd and long proved problematic for the Boilermaker defense.
• If there's more news on the plus side, it looked like this defense was able to get plenty of pressure on Jack Lausch and force him to scramble.

4. Other observations

• I really liked what I saw today from Jahmal Edrine and Jaron Tibbs. Their contributions to The receiving core are underrated.
• Despite the efforts of Devin Mockobee, The Boilermakers struggled to run the ball.
• Nice to see other guys on defense come up with Turnovers. For example. Antonio Stevens

5. Conclusion

• Two weeks the Boilermakers had to prepare. The Boilermakers could have snatched victory from the jaws of defeat today. Based on this, It's not a matter of if Ryan Walters gets fired but a matter of when.
• Even whith the season going down the tubes, Boilermaker nation contiues to show up to Ross Ade. They deserve better than this.

I've been defending Walters all year, but this has me convinced. Two really bad plays, then we decide we can get those 6 on 4th down because why? Northwestern has a good kicker, they're not missing. If we fail to get at least 3 then we lose. Why would you risk that? How can you have so little faith in your defense?

Who would want to play for a coach that fights to get to OT then throws it away like that?
