Private cooking lessons

My son is 12 and has a passion for cooking. I’m looking for some private lessons for him. He has pretty advanced skills for his age, so most of the youth classes I’ve researched aren’t a good fit, and the adult classes don’t allow kids under age 18.

Wondering if there are any private chefs out there who enjoy teaching and would be open to private lessons.

Anyone know of a low cost/free mammogram?

I have a lump in my boob, I got it mammogramed last year and they said it was most likely benign but that I needed another one in six months to double check, which is right about now. The first one it cost me 500 dollars even with insurance. I can't be the only person that this is financially out of reach for. Any tips? I was lucky enough to have help to pay for the first one, but I don't this time, and I'm scared to not have it checked again.

How long does it take to hear back from them once you put in an application? I did the application two days ago.

Commute in Austin

Hello,

I have a job offer in the Arboretum. I was looking at apartments near the Triangle or Hyde Park area and used Google Maps to calculate the commute, which didn't come out to more than an hour. I wanted to know if this is actually true in real life or should I consider finding housing near the Arboretum instead.

Thanks

Potholes, speed bumps, and bike lanes

There is some sweet irony that Austin is spending a lot of money to install speed bumps, pedestrian islands, and bike lanes in my neighborhood (NE Hyde Park), even as they ignore massive potholes and pavement failures. How very Texan: ignore infrastructure while making it look like tax dollars are going somewhere useful. 🙄

You're not getting the level of local government you're paying for re: COA and TC telework policy

I'll preface this by saying I'm a very pro labor, progressive minded person.

While switching to a largely remote/hybrid workforce in 2020 was necessary and understandably came with an adjustment period where things would move slower, we still seem to be stuck in that period. The cogs that make these big machines move are plain slower and that ultimately makes the experience worse for you the public. Things like hiring, permit approval, paying contractors/vendors, just buying supplies that people need to do their jobs, all are slower, and they were slow before. Nobody is going to say they are more productive at the office but it's definitely whispered about how much less people are doing at home.

There's no real way to measure what I'm claiming, which I would argue is the problem. A department's performance and productivity are rarely measured and individual reviews are considered a joke by all as they are not tied to raises.

I'm not saying we need to all get back in the office now. There are departments that's can absolutely work remotely but just need to be held accountable.

Lost Foster Dog near Walter E Long Lake 78724

Lost Dog : Austin Animal Center FOSTER DOG named Marcela

last seen around 9301 Hog Eye Rd, 78724 near Walter E Long Lake.

Female Grey Pittie, about 55 lbs, has some white on her face and chest.

Wearing a neon pink collar, nothing else. Collar should have an AAC foster tag.

Her name is Marcela and has been seen in the area. She may try to approach you and your dog, but she’s scared, and not dog friendly. If out with you dog do not try to approach- please call the numbers below.

She will most likely approach humans, and she is very friendly w/ people.

She slipped out of the foster’s front door about around 9 pm last night and has been seen in the area.

I am not the foster. Just a volunteer friend of Marcela’s.

Thank you!

Advice for new photographer

Hey all, I just moved to Austin from Georgia. I am a photographer (also do videography) and I want to get plugged into the creative scene here. Any tips? I've joined some Facebook groups and gotten some interaction, but I want to find in-person groups and events too.

Hey Austin,

A friend just had a couch damage related incident and is looking for local repairs. Does anyone in the sub have a go-to upholsterer in the city?

What Texas DMV is best to try a walk-in without appointment?

Have an opportunity for a new job that requires my Texas license (I haven’t switched from Florida since I moved here). Soonest I can schedule an appointment is June.

I’ve heard some people have had luck with walking in to license offices at open and getting in.

Has anyone had a good experience at any specific DMV not in Austin? I’m willing to drive!

Why does Austin hate line dancing?

When I brought it up a couple of times, people said there’s no line dancing in Texas. Although I didn’t get an explanation. But one and two step are acceptable. It is a bit annoying as I don’t have a partner and I still wanna dance.

Allergist recommendation?

I have seasonal allergies, but man, I have not experienced allergies this severe in my entire life. Does anyone else feel this way with the pollen count recently? I am taking Zyrtec every day, and by the time my day is over my allergies are still so bad I need to take benedryl at night. And I still feel symptoms. I just want relief. Does anyone have any recommendations for an allergist in south Austin?

Wait at N Lamar DPS.. with two horses

Maybe the owner also didn’t have childcare so he has to bring them. Also Austin DPS don’t honor appointment times. Is that something new?

The Texas Traffic Inchworm

I've lived in many states with different kinds of hair-tearing frustrating drivers, but Texans seems to have some different breed that doesn't want to get to their destination. Simply put-they inchworm.

The two and a half minute red light finally turns green. The first person up takes 3-4 seconds to notice before finally letting off their breaks and moving forward. The second person doesn't begin to move until the person ahead of them is about 100 feet forward. The third person finally starts to move when the second is long gone, and the fourth starts to creep forward by the time the light is turning yellow.

I've lived in so many infuriating situations as "No signal Idaho, 'What's a lane?' Colorado, and '&%@% you' Connecticut", but the Texans don't seem to want to go anywhere. I watch I 183 from my office, and I see the inchworm. People are at a full stop for a few seconds as the car 4 ahead is long gone. I see across the way as a light turns green and only 4 or 5 cars make it through.

The easy answer is to blame it on people on their phones, but wouldn't that work in all of the other states? I'm sure every Stephanie and Michael is sitting there at a green light looking at the next Instagram post they don't care about, but why is it so bad here? I just want to know! Why does it take me 45 minutes to go 8 miles!?!? (Not to mention Parmer is clearly rigged to make people think "the toll roads will be faster, and that $11 to Leander is worth it!")

(No I'm not from California. We [Oregon] hate those pricks as much as the Texans)
