Uoft makes me feel so dumb and I have no confidence in my work

I'm so frustrated with myself. I have an assignment that's past due as of midnight which I've barely made any progress on in the last few hours. I can still hand it in but lose 3% every day that it's late.

I end up spending more time on work that is later deleted than what work I actually keep. It so frustrating to lose all confidence in your ability to write a simple essay. Writing papers used to be my strength but it seems in the past few years that hasn't been the case. It's hitting especially hard in university, which of course was inevitable.

I'm at the point of giving up on this assignment knowing that more time I spent on it, the more disappointing the grade will be in the end.

I will still be handing it in, I just needed to rant.

PHY324 or PSL372 as a lab course for biological physics spec

I’m deciding between these two options to fulfil my program requirements.

I’ve taken PHY224 and found it kind of boring. I’ve heard PHY324 is just a continuation of that so I’m not too sure if I’ll enjoy it, especially since it would be very time consuming. The contents of PSL372 sound a lot more interesting and I really enjoyed my past bio labs if it’s anything similar. The only issue is I’m not sure if I will take the 400 level physics labs yet (not a program requirement) which I would need PHY324 as a prereq for.

If anyone has experience with PHY324 or PSL372 before, any advice would be appreciated :)

Prof got rly mad bc I asked a clarifying question during test

I asked a clarifying question about the exam and my prof took it as me pointing out a mistake in the exam questions. Got super offended and went on a long rant about the question being ridiculous in front of the entire class while we were trying to write the exam with not much time left. Is this normal?

Academic Integrity Violation on midterm exam because of mistake

Hey there, about a month ago I was doing a midterm exam where I made a huge mistake and I was looking for any advice on the matter for my meeting with a dean's designate professor. An explanation of what happened, I came in very near to when the exam was beginning and made the most stupid mistake of my life by forgetting to take my phone out of my pocket. I was sitting in the last column near the last row, so I was one of the first people the invigilator came to in order to check my ID and get my signature and whatnot. This was 5 minutes into the exam, so I am busy answering questions before all the information leaves my mind. As I sign my signature, the invigilator asks me to stand up and flip my pockets inside out. This threw me off guard as I have never been asked this and realized that my phone was in my pocket. I take my phone out of my pocket and tell the invigilator that I forgot to take my phone out of my pocket by accident so they tell me to put it in my bag and I do so. Soon after the invigilator returns with another invigilator and tells me to give my phone to them. I tell them it's in my bag and they tell me to go get it. They ask for me to unlock it and I do, they go through my phone to see if I was cheating but there obviously wasn't anything there as I had no intention of cheating. They then take away my phone for the rest of the exam. After the exam is done, I go to the front to retrieve my phone where the invigilators make me sign a form. This was really dumb of me but I signed the form without reading it as I just did a long exam that I spent a long time preparing for. I talked to some friends who took the exam and they told me that they didn't have to do any pocket search which I found a bit strange but I guess it is what it is. A couple of days ago I received an email from the academic integrity office saying that I have a meeting with a dean's designate professor so I guess I won't be getting a meeting with my professor. In my scenario, should I admit to an academic integrity violation? What are some do's and don'ts? Any advice would be incredibly helpful. Thank you for reading through my situation.

Regarding Transferring from other university (First year)

Hi there! I’m looking to transfer to UofT from McMaster. Hoping to major in economics if I can make it in. I was wondering if anyone had experience transferring to UofT economics from another university before? Any input would be helpful. The program I’m currently in has very specific specialized courses, so as far as I am aware none of the credits will transfer. So I would be starting from first year and applying to economics at the end (correct me if I am wrong!!) I believe? Any info regarding what GPA to maintain or any advice or your own experience, literally anything will be super helpful. This is the first time I have been on my own in terms of applying for a university program, so it’s a little intimidating and stressful. Thanks so much for your time!

Have any life science students taken mgt100? Advice needed

Hi! So this is for any life science students that have taken mgt100. I’m taking it in the winter for the business certificate thing. People say it’s a lot of memorization, but I feel like I can handle it since I’ve taken bio120/bio130/bio230. How do the levels of memorization needed for that course compare to bio? Any help is appreciated!

is it a bad look on ur transcript to cr/ncr two courses in a semester?

basically had a rly shitty time this semester, i’m using up my final 2 CR/NCRs on one breadth requirement but also a 200 level course that was supposed to fill one of my program requirements this semester. does it look bad if the other CR/NCR is just for a breadth course…?

Professor gave every grad student an assignment grade of zero for not attending a particular lecture

Just to preface this by saying that nowhere in this course’s syllabus was it ever mentioned that attendance may be tied to grading for any assignments in this course.

But essentially the professor threw a temper tantrum and gave everyone a zero for two essays worth 6% of the overall grade, all because only one grad student showed up to a particular lecture where the readings for one of those essays were discussed. This is also in a course with brutally hard assignments that are extremely time consuming and unlike a lot of other grad courses an 80 is NOT guaranteed if you put in a lot of effort.

A 70 is a fail in grad school in case you don’t know, and this course grades like an undergrad course so expected averages are in the mid 70s. So this loss of 6% of our grades puts a good number of us in peril of failing this course, all because we didn’t attend a particular lecture because it was NEVER communicated to us that attendance is tied to grading.

Is there anything we can do in this situation?

Need recommendations for AI and plagiarism checkers

I haven't had issues concerning plagiarism since high school (no, i didn't plagiarize and i got it sorted with my teacher).

I want to make sure I don't hand in an assignment with improper citations or unintentional plagiarism.

how hard is taking 3 credits/semester (6 credits/year)?

I've been considering increasing my course load to 6 classes but I'm not confident that I can maintain my gpa with the extra work I'll have to do. is it better to just take the summer semester instead?

What tips would you give when editing a paper? (working on a debate paper right now)

I've used the same simple methods since high school (like peer editing and sites like grammarly) but I wanted to know if anyone has any other recommendations for editing work, whether it be a specific method or software?

Helpppp how bad is it if I take 4 credits my first year of uni

I am taking 4 classes in the fall which it says is 2 credits and 6 classes in the winter which it says is 3 credits. But I hate my anthro class and want to drop it, it’s a full year class bringing me down to 4 credits but I can add another half class. Am I screwed forever if I drop it?

UofT downtown VS Mississauga / Is downtown harder classes

Hello, I was just wondering on the difference between Poli Sci social science at UofT downtown and Poli Sci social science in Mississauga. When applying on Ouac i selected the missigaga campus and now on university info website i find that there is also a polisci at the downtown campus. It says the grade range is 75% for Mississauga and high 80s for downtown. Is the program different why is there a difference in grade ranges? is it just the location that makes it higher? When graduating on the diploma is it highlighted that i took my program in missisgua and not downtown. UofT is my top choice and i want my top choice to be the better program.

Is it okay to put a CS minor on my resume before completion?

I'm pursuing a CS minor and only have two courses left to fulfill the completion requirements. I haven't officially enrolled in it yet, but as long as I complete the required courses, I’ll get the minor. I've listed the CS minor on my resume, could this cause any issues during the HR background check?

HMB303 was a super disorganized course (Professor Hamel)

I’m a human biology major, and HMB303 (global health and human rights) was one of the worst classes I’ve taken in uoft because of how disorganized it was. On the course calendar, it doesn’t say that it’s a seminar course, but it’s just like one. The lectures are 3 hours long and completely useless and the professor was totally disorganized and unresponsive. The syllabus wasn’t finalized until the 3rd week of class! But generally, this is what we had:

SYLLABUS

  • Weekly discussion posts based on primary articles (20%)(There were weekly supplementary articles too)
  • “Weekly” in-class quiz based on either the primary paper or a paper he tells you to read on the Announcements (30%)
  • Case study (based on a current human rights problem) presentation (25%)
  • Mid-term paper (this year it was about Structural Adjustment Plans) (10%)
  • End-term paper (this year it was about climate change) (15%)

DISORGANIZATION

  • Did not finalize syllabus until week 3
  • Did not release the End-term paper instructions until 1 week before it was officially due. Granted, he did give us a penalty-free extension until the first Monday of exam season. However, if he had released it earlier, at least it have allowed students to properly manage their time better.
  • The prof would somehow never finish his slides? Even though the classes were 3 hours long, and there would not even be that many slides! It’s all because of how much he asked for the class to discuss.
    • This was detrimental when it came to the case studies. The case study topics were supposed to have been covered in lecture 1-2 weeks prior to the presentation, which would definitely help with contextualizing the presentation. However, for our case study in particular, he presented our topic on the day OF our presentation, so it was of no help to us.
  • Would air emails all the time, even when the TAs were emailed, they told us to email the prof and he wouldn’t respond
  • If the prof marked anything of yours instead of the TA, good luck getting your marks back. He gave us our case study (week 3) marks back on week 12! We could not decide to NCR the course in time because of this
  • For the in-class quiz, as a class, we decided that having best 6 out of 7 quizzes was a good option, in case someone had to miss one for whatever reason. The prof would arbitrarily choose what classes he would have the quiz, and at the end of the day, we only did have 6 quizzes. Forget choice, you had to be there for each one
  • Every new development and assignment was instructed and linked in the Announcements tab instead of in the modules; and sometimes the information was in 2 separate announcements. This made it so you would have to scroll through to find the assignments which I found to be messy.

USELESS LECTURES

  • 3 hour long lectures with the “weekly” quiz at the halfway point.
  • The material was not testable in any manner, so it felt like attending was a waste of time. Only the readings were testable/useful (for quizzes and they were useful for the papers too).
  • In addition, instead of the professor lecturing, he would ask the class (in a seminar style) for students’ input, so half the class time was wasted on that. Mind you, it didn’t say it was a seminar course on the calendar.

MARKING

  • Both TAs and prof mark harshly. The in-class quizzes were almost easy marks, but everything else is marked harshly. I got marked off for not having enough detail, but the limit was literally 2 pages.

Getting a D in first year chemistry, will this affect my chances of becoming a zoologist?

I'm really worried about my GPA, I'm on the verge of failing chm135, but otherwise I'm doing decent in my biology classes. How selective is grad school about GPA? Especially first-year classes.

I’m in a POL class, my TA might be ignoring me, don’t know what to do

So, I’m in my first year in POL106 and my TA just marked my essay. Problem is she copy pasted the criticism and grade even when they don’t match. I emailed her but she isn’t responding and the Prof said TAs are in charge of grading. I don’t know who else to contact, there’s no exam so I’m really lost here.

Worried about the Chemistry requirement for applying

I am a US high school student (Canadian citizen though) applying to UofT Computer Engineering and their site says they require AP/senior level Chemistry. I only took Chemistry in 9th grade (Regular level, not honors nor AP) and Im worried this will cause me to get rejected. How strict are they about this requirement, and is there anything I can do about it given that the application deadline is in 1 month?

Breaking Up Before Finals: Seeking Support from U of T Mental Health?

Finals are just around the corner, and I’ve just been dumped. It was a long-distance relationship, which makes it nearly impossible to reconcile. I often find myself trapped in memories, and with my intense ability to associate things, everything around me feels like a trigger.

My parents don’t really understand my sadness, and I had cut off most of my social connections because of the relationship(a very terrible desicion). Now, there’s no one I can turn to. This has seriously affected my study and review, leaving me feeling down all the time.

I’m wondering if U of T Mental Health would be open to hearing my story. I really just really need someone to talk to.

Robarts is a LIBRARY pls shut up and be QUIET: library rant

I’m SO INCREDIBLY FRUSTRATED AT HOW LOUD PEOPLE ARE AT ROBARTS

like for what reason are people fully chatting and laughing loudly and hanging out in large groups at the tables in the main library. Especially the upper floors which are QUIET FLOORS. It’s actually ridiculous how many people are so insensitive and ignorant to their surroundings, if you want to talk to ur friends and hang out- GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. It’s so unacceptable that people are walking around taking phone calls or watching videos at full blast volume and just fooling around causing a ruckus. For the love of god have some respect, people like me go to Robarts for the quiet working environment of a library, did yall parents not teach you ANYTHINGGGGGG I swear I’ve seen toddlers better behaved in a library compared to these people.

It’s insane that these groups (who are always coincidentally very young… like first and second year students…) have no EQ or any understanding of social cues in a library to keep quiet. Everyone else is silent and working.. why do these groups feel that it’s ok to speak at full volumes as if they’re the only ones there????? Are yall not embarrassed??????? It’s actually baffling how people have full conversation with each other while completely ignoring the fact that they’re being extremely rude and distracting. (This specific genre of people infuriate and disgust me so much I’ve started calling them the Robarts Rats lol)

Robarts is a LIBRARY not a social club. I repeat, Robarts is a LIBRARY!!!!!!!! if you’re going to be there please respect the other people there and keep quiet. There are literally signs all around the building saying to be quiet. If you rlly wna chitchat that badly then don’t go to the library and bother people who are there fighting for their academic lives. Either do us all a favour and learn to shut tf up, or do yourself a favour and go back to elementary school to relearn how to properly behave in public.

Anyways. I digress. Good luck on finals to everyone except for the Robarts rats.

POL222 last lecture: Observation research design (Professor Ariga)

I can't believe he only spend like 10 minutes before the end of the final lecture to speed run 20 pages of slides about Observation research design (cross-sectional data, time series and panel data) that could potentially worth 20% in our exam? No one in my tutorial seems to understand what the hell those design are (And everyone were complaining the professor are speaking too fast with his thick accent). There's still over a week until the exam but I'm already panicking since I have 0 ideas about them.

Does anyone have completed CHM135 lecture notes they could possibly share

I’m on my 2nd year at uoft and learned from first year that going to lectures is honestly a waste of time for me… I can never focus properly and end up zoning out and not listening at all; so for my classes I usually go through the textbooks and practice problems, which have served me pretty well for most of my classes.

HOWEVER…. I’m taking CHM135 this year and realized wayyyy too late that just going through the textbooks and practice problems was not gonna work for me at all (basically bombed both term tests). The only other way I can think of studying is to go through the lecture notes (in addition to what I did previously ofc)…. But the issue is I didn’t go to most of the lectures and didn’t watch the recordings before they took them off.

So… I was wondering if there is any kind and beautiful soul out there willing to share their CHM135 filled in lecture notes with me 😭 Ik it’s a lot to ask for but atp Idk who to ask… I don’t have a lot of friends in this class (first years tend to lean away when I tell them I’m a 2nd year) so I’m basically alone and feeling extremely hopeless/helpless.

Also, if anyone’s up to dropping some study tips for this class, that would be amazing too ♥️♥️♥️

Thanks in advance!!! Good luck to everyone studying for finals~!
