IBM and Lenovo ThinkPad laptop enthusiasts!
For IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad laptop enthusiasts.
Blog posts are encouraged.
Tips:
When buying a used ThinkPad, remember to check that the BIOS is not locked with a supervisor's password and that Computrace is not enabled and activated.
When buying a new ThinkPad, consider taking the IPS screen option if possible, as it doesn't cost much. Not only will it have better brightness, colour, contrast and viewing angles - you will most probably more than make up the investment when selling it. Corporate bulk purchasers don't usually go for it. (Comparison video)
The only tools you need for servicing a ThinkPad are a set of small screwdrivers and a nylon spudger (for taking the screen and keyboard bezels off), and possibly a pair of tweezers. A can of compressed air may be useful too, and a bottle of isopropyl alcohol and cotton buds are good for cleaning, but not on the screen. Never use nail polish remover (acetone).
When reinstalling Windows, try the Lenovo disc images, as longer battery times have been reported, probably due to custom drivers.

I'm happy just with the two P52 Xeons. Everything else is gravy. :) Nothing I could test had computrace, MDM, or management, so that's always a plus.
I've been using a P50 Xeon for about five years. I really only planned on getting one P52 out of the deal, and I assumed my P50 would be a donor, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that most of these worked.
I guess I have a P50 for sale :)
Hi everyone - I'm trying to fix up my disabled mum's X1 Carbon. It's running W7 and device manager shows the Intel Dual Band wireless AC 7265. If I go into networking / manage wireless networks and nothing ever shows up. It's behaving like when machines had a little manual on/off switch for wireless.
Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions how to get this machine on the wifi? Thanks!
I cannot for the life of me get windows 10 back ;-;
I tried linux but sadly got frustrated by some issues so im trying to go back to windows, but all it's saying is its missing a storage device driver?
I downloaded one of the storage controller drivers and none of them worked :(
If it helps its a: TYPE 20-EQ-S48H00
With a: sandisk sd8tn8u256g1001 SSD in one of the M.2 slots
I tried going through Lenovo's recovery order thing, but it just told me its a EOL Product :(
Update: Turns out, im a little silly, I forgot to add the first two letters of the Serial number lmao, leaving this post up incase anyone makes the same mistake
I have a T14s gen 4, and first one of the arrow keys started having problems where I had to push a little harder on it to get it to work. It no longer had the springyness to it that it once had, like there was something stuck under it. I tried to pop it off to clean it but broke the clip on it. It still works but it's just loose. I never found any debris under it.
Now the same problem is happening on the right side of the keyboard where it's almost unusable because I have to push harder on it, so I make a lot of mistakes typing. I'm afraid to remove it because I don't want to break that too.
I've never had this problem on any of my other ThinkPads. Does anyone else have this issue?
Hello everyone, Buying the right Thinkpad!! currently is a difficult call. I checked allmost every recent reviews but i got more confused. There is many series, i do know the differences and some specifications of each, but i do not know the right one for me. Here is what i want:
I'm a web developer & i do UX UI design i use : Figma, Indesign, photoshop, illistrator and some Dev Tools that need some resources. So it's a multi task job that need a performance machine so:
1- upgradable 16" Machine ( 2 slots RAM , 2 SSD) 2- Good Screen configuration ( i mainly use monitor ) Calibration is sometimes a nightmare.. 3- CPU, man i want something that make me comfortable and get things done, i don't need a monster. 4- Any a must have features you know and i don't
So, please guide me if i can get what i need 600$ 1000$ that's cool to
Hello I'm looking for a thinkpad I could play games on even if it means on lowest settings on windows 7 or xp does anyone have any recommendations (if anyone is wondering games like GTA,Minecraft, and some other steam games)
Hey everyone, does anyone know what could be the reason why the X13 Gen4 (AMD) is not yet listed as eligible for Win11 24H2 upgrade? The page [1] on Lenovo's website lists Gen 3 and several other older ThinkPads already support the latest Win 11 version.
Should I attempt to force an installation?
So my Lenovo G40-80 just died today (RIP) and I'm looking for a new laptop, and I heard good things about Thinkpads. I'm not really a tech guy, but I'll try to describe what I want as detailed as possible
Budget:
No more than 600$ USD for used/refurnished, 300-400$ is the sweet spot for me, cheaper is better but I'm afraid it'll hurt it's performance
Use:
Mostly productivity. Some heavy (by my standard) activities includes open around 5-10 heavy spreadsheet, opening around 10 heavy browser tabs (TikTok, Discord, Whatsapp Web), sometimes I also use Sony Vegas for video editing (no commercial use, for internal use only, so not that heavy). For webcam & mic, as long as it's not horrendously bad I think I'm fine with whatever
Weight & Size:
Preferrably on the lighter and smaller side, I'm not looking for PC desktop replacement since I do have PC at home for very heavy task like gaming or CAD
Display:
Not exactly a visual detail guy, so anything goes
Battery Time:
Longer is better (duh), atleast 2 hours with my usual use (see above)
Durability, Repairabilty, and Upgradability:
As much as possible, I want its parts like keyboard, battery, and RAM to be easy to fix/replace by myself
Features:
Prefer no "luxury" feature like touchscreen, Thunderbolts port, USB-C port, etc. since I don't need them
Hello everyone!! I have a t440p Was changing OS from zorin to prime OS Didn't know about GRUB and all now it's stuck in boot loop... I think it'll help with making another flash drive for zorin and flash it on ssd because if i use the primeOS drive boot it wouldn't let me even mount or unmount the ssd...... Help out if someone knows...
a friend gave me his old x230. He spilled water in the keyboard and it doesn't work anymore, the battery is dead and it was overheating before I dissambled it and cleaned it. I was thinking about getting a x220 keyboard on it because I personally think it's beautiful, would it fit in the x230 chassis or should I get a proper x230 keyboard? I want to change the motherboard too (it's a i5-3320m), can I put a motherboard from another series/brand or I have to get a x230 mobo?
I get "critical battery error" when I try to boot up the computer. At first I thought it may have been the battery that's at fault as it runs out of energy in minutes, always have (bought it used), but now when I'm in a quiet space I can hear a constant, repetitive beeping coming from the power adapter. Is this a sign that it's the power adapter that's at fault, or the battery? I just became unemployed, so I don't want to waste money, so to say, by buying a new power adapter just to find out that it didn't work.
Edit: I want to add that it's not plugged into the computer, and only in the power socket in the wall.
I have an X1 Extreme Gen 1 with an 8850H.
I am using XTU to undervolt (set to -0.075V for now) and my temps barely break 65C. However, XTU is constantly saying I am either Power Limit Throttled or Current Limit Throttled. I don't mind my laptop getting hotter (I'd be fine with it up to 80C honestly) if I could get more performance out of it. How do I get around power/current limit throttling? I've tried changing "Turbo Boost Short Power Max" and "Turbo Boost Power Max" to absurdly high numbers and it doesn't do anything
I have this strange issue that occurs when my laptop is connected to my 2 T27h 30 monitors. With 1 monitor connected, or my laptop connected directly to the LAN (not through the monitor), I get a connection speed of around 800Mbps.
As soon as I connect the second monitor (both T27h's) the network speed drops to around 300Mbps.
I have tested both monitors independently and get 800Mbps as long as I am only connected to one of the monitors.
I have tried swapping everything over and it doesn't matter which one is the main monitor with the USB-C and LAN connection. The speed drops to around 300Mbps.
USB-C to monitor and DP daisy chaining
Both monitors have the latest firmware, I have tried factory resets, changing settings on the monitor etc.
I have tested 3 different laptops (Yoga X1 Gen 9, Gen7 and Surface 9) all Win11 24H2 and the result is the same.
Has anyone experienced this or resolved it?

I don't care how much it will weigh. I from Russia and bad speak English, but we have very little information about thinkpad’s. Because I ask Reddit community to help.
Thank you all in advance
Hello fellas,
I recently had a weird problem with my T470. It continuously does the 3 times blinking (both power button and screen) when plugged in, which normally only does once when initially plugged in. Now I have to use it on battery only... Does anyone have any clue about possible causes?
I checked the power adapter and the charging modules. They seem to work just fine. I don't know if this is a hardware problem but I do notice the fan gets quite noisy when it does this blinking. Thanks for any ideas!
Does anyone have experience with Windows 11 on a T430s with the i7 3520m? I know it does not have the TPM so I have to install via USB stick...
This is my daily driver so I can't have much downtime if any at all.
Thanks in advance!
Paging the RKIs... recently got a pristine refurb'd T490 w/ the Touchscreen display, forgot that Win-D-Bloze (Win11 Pro) is NOT Unix/Linux, and left it on, UNrebooted, for 2 days... came home to find this UNresponsive "Mildew/Water Damage Screen of Death" mess:
Hard button shutoff, rebooted several times, ran Diags, etc...
Eventually it cleared up, AFTER a period of FLICKERING display, "like it never happened"... but I'm coming to the end of my 30-day refund window... any ideas what this is, and could it happen AGAIN?
Thanks in advance!
PS: HOW do I get the photo to show with the headline, in the list of recent posts??
Hey all I'm seriously thinking about buy a sight unseen t480 for roughly 250usd equiv in the country I live in... I'm on the fence because I currently using a m1 air but REALLY want a tinkerer machine and a machine completely dedicated to learning code. Am I crazy for considering this... Ram and storage don't matter because I plan on maxing it out... Battery life doesn't matter because I plan on maxing that out... The real question is is the i5 8350U insside enough in today's world? I only really play retro games so I know I can turn my MacBook or my phone into that... The only game I'd consider on it would be Minecraft because 64gh of deditated wam... But just for everything today can it still keep up for coding in Go and Web development stuff as well as browsing? Also is the weight trade for customizability worth it over the t480s that's lighter but only max 40gb of ram and a not so stellar batterylife
So I found this offer with specs:
Intel Core i5-4200M @ 2.50GHz 4th Generation Screen Size and Resolution: 14" 1366x768 Storage: 500GB HDD RAM: 8GB Graphics: Integrated no gpu
I really want to use it for 2D gamedev with Godot.
Worth it?
Greetings Thinkers... ThinkPad...ers...
I am fairly certain I'll be buying a T480 this weekend (for 300 CAD, 213 USD) and I was wondering if there is anything to look for, in particular signs of wear or anything that could be red flags. New to the used business laptop shopping!
Is there also a way to tell which screen is installed? I might want to get a 400 nits panel anyway.
Thanks!
