/r/Tantra
Tantra is the physical, mental, and spiritual path that connects all paths. Think of it as a systems approach to spiritual science.
Compared with most spiritual traditions, most forms of tantra are notable for being primarily focused on personal growth and empowerment and less interested in soteriological concerns like mokṣa, salvation, karma, or the afterlife.
There are many tantric traditions from both Asian and Western communities. All are welcome here as long as they abide by our rules.
Tantra: from the Sanskrit tantram, literally "loom, warp," hence "groundwork, system, doctrine," from tan "to stretch, extend," from PIE root *ten- "to stretch, extend" (see tenet). Online Etymology Dictionary
The path that connects all paths.
Esoteric paths of transformation.
One meaning of "tantric" is "based on the tantras," a variety of traditional texts and teachings mostly concerned with ritual technique. In many ways, looking at original texts from the First Millennium, tantra was thought of as a kind of practical spiritual technology, not as a religion, which explains why it was adopted by so many different religions.
In Hinduism, the opposite of "tantric" is "vedic," referring to the mainstream Hindu traditions that are based on the great sagas known as the Vedas and the later scriptures in the same tradition. Vedic traditions emphasize caste and purity, while many tantric traditions were open to all castes, even those considered "unclean," and practiced rituals that involved "impure" substances and actions.
In Vajrayana (or "Tantric") Buddhism, the opposite of "tantric" is "sutric," referring to the texts and teachings known as the Sutras, most of which were written in the 1st through 5th centuries, before most of the tantras were written. However, this distinction is not clearcut and often leads to some confusion, because the Tibetan monastic traditions, in particular, are heavily sutric, but still claim to be tantric for historical and traditional reasons.
Most vedic and sutric sects and religions are ascetic, aimed at escaping from this world and from what they believe is the illusion of reality that chains us to samsara, the endless cycle of rebirth. They aim to do this through purity, self-denial, proper ritual and behavior, and the annihilation of fear, desire, pleasure, and all other emotions.
Tibetan monastic Buddhism is one example of this. These sects claim to be tantric, but they are in fact mostly sutric. They typically restrict tantra to a tiny elite who have spent decades as celibate monks mastering the sutras. Only then do they have access to tantric rituals and "secret knowledge," which has been repurposed as a way to achieve "enlightenment" and become a Bodhisattva or Buddha.
Similarly, Vedic religions generally teach that asceticism and self-denial are necessary for spiritual progress, and that the ultimate goal of spiritual progress is achieving "liberation," which means liberation from the cycle of life itself. Even if they claim to be "tantric," or to incorporate tantric elements, the tantric rituals they use have been entirely transformed and repurposed toward this goal of abstinence and "liberation."
By contrast, most tantric traditions with authentic roots are simply not interested in liberation, Buddhahood, or the afterlife. They are focused instead on personal growth and empowerment and on creating a better life in this world.
As part of of the focus on personal growth and empowerment, many tantric sects believe that sensory pleasure is not something intrinsically bad, but can instead be a source of energy and motivation that, if properly channeled, can make us stronger and more effective in our lives. In classical terms, most tantric traditions are Dionysian, not Apollonian or ascetic.
Also in contrast with many vedic and sutric traditions, most tantric sects believe that this world is real and that it's the only one we have. Theistic nondual tantric sects typically believe that the ultimate godhead IS the world and all living things, so you do not need to "seek" god or connect with god, you ARE god – and so is everyone and everything else.
Beyond these classifications, it's important to remember that although there are tantric religions – with theological beliefs that vary widely – tantra itself is not a religion. It is an approach to learning, understanding, and acting in this world and becoming a better, stronger, more effective person.
"A person who, irrespective of caste, creed or religion, aspires for spiritual expansion or does something concrete, is a Tantric. Tantra in itself is neither a religion nor an 'ism'. Tantra is a fundamental spiritual science. So wherever there is any spiritual practice it should be taken for granted that it stands on the Tantric cult." Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar

I hope its the right community to ask. I know tantra is so much more than sex, but for a couple looking to improve their intimacy and sex life, can someone recommend a book or course? Me and my husband would like to study and explore ourselves and each other, however he is not really interested in the consciousness side of it (which I know is limiting), but I would still like to practice the tantric principles with him.
There is so much misinformation out there..would really appreciate any advice. Thank you
I have been going through Charlena Ishani videos that are part of the House of Her. I'm not in a position to buy one of her workshops at the moment, so looking for some other good teachers that have affordable subscription or good free content. Please offer some guidance, I'm really enjoying the start of my Tantra journey, excited to learn fromasm many great teachers as possible.

How to prepare oneself to be able to find the guru? Preparation in terms of daily lifestyle, specific practices, special efforts etc.
I know , this might be irrelevant to this sub , there are other ones for this purpose.
Reaching point consciousness or " God state" is my current interest. And this takes deep meditation which I really can't do more than an hour.
As Hinduism and esoteric tantra always include meditation as a part of ritual , be it for invoking deities or tap into astral realm.
I wanna to ask how people really do it? Where do they get so much patience , determination and inner strength with clear mindset? How ancient sages used to do it for so long time?
Hi all,
I have very weird question that some of you can shed some light on , I am a newly married man wearing hanuman and bhairav baba lockets with chain. While sleeping in nights i am removing chain and storing it in a box in mycloset . I am worried about removing it each and every night as well as storing it in wrong place . Is it okay if I remove it every night from my body and store it my closet will it lose any energy if I am doing it daily??
Should i be wearing it at all being newly married??
So like the title says, I'll really appreciate if you people can share your experience of how and when you met your guru, I'll like to know how you dealt with their tteachings like was their method different from what you practiced before you met them? How did their influence affect you and your thought process? How did you know they were your guru and not some trickstet Or fraud?
Whom should I pray I am confused Shiv roop like Bhairav or Narayan avatars like ram and krishna please share some valuable information
People keep saying it's dangerous. I would like to understand more deeply what they're trying to say.
What are the risks of practicing without a guru exactly?
Have you ever met someone who practiced without a guru and suffered the consequences? If yes, what were those consequences?
Thank you very much.
Can anyone provide an anecdote on outcomes of simulatenously combining tantric massage with kundalini activation work, hypnosis, or mushrooms?
As a Jain Tantra practitioner, I’m here to share my perspective and ask several questions. Being Jain, I often explore these channels to deepen my understanding of Jain Tantra, a highly secretive practice within Jainism. This secrecy exists to prevent misuse and to ensure that people don’t adopt Jainism solely for tantric purposes. In Jainism, Tantra practice is permitted once someone is on the path to achieving Samyaktva (complete faith in the Tirthankaras and their teachings about the soul and karma, particularly Ghati and Aghati karmas).
Exploring these discussions sometimes helps me gain context around certain beej mantras (seed syllables) and understand the lifestyle practices that accompany them. To make sadhana effective, practitioners must adhere to certain disciplined practices, such as:
So, I benefit greatly from the insights shared by you, fellow Tantra practitioners—thank you for this knowledge.
If beej mantras are indeed so powerful, why don’t practitioners just recite them instead of using full mantraslike "Om Hrim Shrim [Deity’s name] Namah"? Is this distinction what makes a Mool Mantra (root mantra) different from a beej mantra?
Here are my questions for guidance:
Additionally, I’m interested in any other suggestions for lifestyle practices that might help in making sadhana more effective and spiritually rewarding.
Thank you in advance for your guidance!
Hello people, if any of you have attended a sadhana shibir conducted by Vedic Sadhana Foundation - related to Om Swami before, let me know your experience and what to expect. I am going to attend the shibir to learn the Ganesh Sadhana. Your insights and thoughts would definitely enrich my forthcoming experience.

Hi all,
I'm interested in learning more about classical, authentic tantra yoga and would like to do some kind of intensive course or retreat in India. Does anyone know of any reputable ashrams or schools?
I hear that RIshikesh, Goa and Kerala are the hotspots and have found a few schools but am unsure of the quality of their teachings:
https://www.muktatantrayoga.com/intensive-yoga-retreat/#curriculum
https://www.shrikaliashram.org/14-day-tantra-yoga-retreat-holidays
https://www.amritapuri.org/ashram (this one i saw multiple times recommended in my research, but their website seems down)
THanks for any help :)
I am seeking some answers here. Since childhood I've seen weird things in my dreams, all sorts of animals especially snakes. I saw a two headed snake in my dream a couple of days back. Post that i saw a lion and since then I've had a strong urge to visit kamakhya and maybe chant kamakhya beej mantra for a week to have clarity. I've seen god vishnu in my dreams several times. And i know how this might sound but i visited a smashaan in my dreams and someone came to take me to kailash in that dream and I had a word with Shiv himself. I was never a big time devotee but i have immense faith in him. I also saw a dream that had a star mark drawn on my chest. I have always wanted someone to give me answers and always thought that maybe a guru can do that but i never found him. I praticed kriya yoga and now i wish to do kamakhya or vishnu sadhna but they are completely different energies if i am not wrong. Where do i get my answers? What do i do to know about my next steps?
As far as I have read & understood, mantras need initiation, thus I have been wondering do rings like manik etc need any initiation?
Hello :)
I just finished my tantra yoga instructor course. I live in South America and There aren't many books here, but my mom is in the US, so I was wondering if anyone recommends good books on tantra yoga or tantra in general so I can buy and send to her hotel.
Thanks
Hey guys so I'm going to try and keep this short but detailed here. So i had this dream where I saw a goddess in my dream in child form about 12 years I would say, I'll first play out my dream so you know what happened.
So in my dream I was going by a temple and I saw a woman(child) on the cables over the temple when I reached the temple I saw she fell from the cables and landed on the temples roof I thought she was hurt but instead she was embrasing a boy child who was about 8-9 years of age then she came down from the roof and I talked to her.
First I asked her if she knew aghor sadhna she said no, then I asked if she knew tantric sadhna and she said yes. Then she demonstarted it to me she took me to a side of the road and we were joined by two more people a girl and that boy she saved, the girl who I assume goddess put three things on the ground one looked like a skull, she said this represent mind, body and spirit also past, present and future.
She showed me a sacrifice ritual where she staked all three of them and cut them then we changed locations we were in a room that was on the second floor of my house, it was dark but had sunlight coming in she said it reminded her of the days of 'kama' her world I thought about sex when the word kama came out then she said don't think about sex even God doesnt fa for it.
Focus on meditation close your eyes and focus I would also like to tell you that her appearance had changed now, if she was a dark tan skinned girl before then now she was fair and beautiful but still around 12 years of age.
That's the whole dream now I'm looking for someone who can teach and guide me can you guys tell me what you think of this? Also are there any temples or people's in Mumbai who can help me with physical guidence?
As what I have known that we cannot do sadhna without guru but can we do atleast chalisa or kavach of bagalamukhi maa without diksha?

I am interested in research of the various entities, both positive and negative that are accessible via Tantric practices. I am only interested in the entities and NOT the means of contacting them. This is for a book I am writing. I have been trying to find information on old Tantra texts. But it has been hard. Any help is appreciated in this matter. Any contacts, guidance for research material or direct information is useful. I have watched Rajarshi Nandy’s podcast but apart from warnings he doesn’t give more useful information about these.
Lately my practice is going good but also my libido and food appetite has increased immensely. I am trying to control both but it's like flood gate has opened? Any views on it?
Earlier I could fast... But lately it has almost became impossible.
I was doing Bhairav ashtakam and Bhairav chalisa and shifted to Vishnu sahastranam and hanuman chalisa so is it ok to shift from one deity prayer to onother I do it without Sankalp so it has any bad impact for shifting to onother and what about kul devi puja
For me I have found my focus has improved significantly
I've heard about braham mhurat a lot. People try to connect to god via that period. I want to know its significance and ways to connect to god, to feel god, to know his presence. How can I do that?
Are there any other ways to connect?
Hi
In short, I tried practicing tantra with a person who practices it with many other people, and for me it didn’t work. I just couldn’t feel pleasure and couldn’t relax my body. We tried different approaches and still nothing. I guess maybe I did feel some pleasure and softening but at the end, he also said it didn’t work for me.
I have a part of sexual abuse and I know it’s hard for me to relax internally but I wonder if some of you had similar experiences and whether you were able to overcome it eventually.
I realize that a belief in curses and black magic is still common in Indian society, but as far as I'm able to tell, the people claiming to have sorcerous power are all scammers and frauds and no such thing actually exists. More to the point, it doesn't seem to have anything to do with tantra as a spiritual discipline.
We already actively discourage posts about "tantric sex." Even though some people believe sex can be part of legitimate tantra, we ask people to post about that in /r/TantricSex instead of /r/Tantra. Should we ask people who have questions about curses and black magic to post on some other sub instead? (Like maybe r/occult?)
Please let us know what you think!
I hear that chanting mantras changes people from their core but is there any chance that I might get back fired by chanting Gayatri mantra without initiation because it’s full of veeja mantra and what kind of changes should I expect?
Edit: can someone please explain on how to do mantra japa like morning or evening and how many times should I repeat the mantra ?
The entire family is aware that certain individuals within our own family practice black magic. They are jealous of us and we believe they have performed some kind of magic on our family before, we tried to confront them but of course they denied the allegations. We all try to maintain our distance from them but we cannot entirely cut them off. They are visiting us for a few days, please suggest remedies to protect ourselves from their negative energies and/or black magic.
Am I a victim of Black Magic?
A couple of years ago, me and my mother went to a baba (we did not know much about black magic back then and did not know he could be a tantric). He is a married man with family. We had heard from a relative that he had cured their cancer. I was suffering from a back issue that no doctor was able to resolve. Tired of going to all specialists I thought blessings from a divine person could help. I went with my mom to his home. He had a separate room where he would sit and attend to his devotees. When we went in, he offered us “Prasad” which was some rice bath and a sweet. After eating, no matter how much we insisted on washing the plates, he forced us to let them be. Then we told him of our problems. After listening to us he demanded that we buy him an iPhone for his daughter. At this point we started doubting his genuinity. We wanted to get out of there so, We told he we didn’t have that kind of cash. After this he made a very strange request, he asked us to buy a new pair of slippers and give him a vest of mine (banian) pack it In a cover and leave it on his compound wall. We felt it strange but somehow felt compelled to do as he told us. We complied with him. This has always haunted me. I do feel unusually physically weak, I have spinal problems that one shouldn’t at my age, I always feel anxious about everything (my heart is constantly beating at 100 even at rest), there is no peace at my home. we’re always arguing on the silliest thing. I wonder if I and my family are indeed affected by black magic. If so, how do we get rid of it?? TL;DR
