This is a subreddit for fans of older anime and manga. It doesn't matter if you're a classic Toonami kid, a Usenet hero, or someone simply interested in the history of anime, everyone is welcome here. The focus should be on series and titles that were broadcast, or published before 2000, where older fans can gather and discuss the Usenet/BBS days, old school conventions, fan clubs, or whatever, and new fans can ask about those days as well as discussing anime itself.
Welcome to Retro Anime, the place to talk about classic anime and manga of the 90s, 80s, or even older. It doesn't matter if you're a Toonami kid, a Usenet hero, or someone simply interested in the history of anime, all kinds are welcome here.
Quick Rules - PLEASE READ!
Keep links, content, and discussions related to anime and manga series broadcasted or published before 2000.
Fan works are acceptable, so feel free to link to your fan art, fan fiction, cosplay, memes, wallpapers, AMVs, reviews, etc.
Regarding piracy: Do not post any links for illegal streams or downloads of any of the series that are legally available. Check the The Library first, if you're not sure. For series that are provably more difficult to access, do not submit it as a link, but instead make a self-post and link it in the text. Read a fuller version of the rules over in the wiki.
Asking for suggestions or making lists that could include newer and older anime mixed together is fine.
Feel free to link to episodes or sales on websites like Hulu, Crunchyroll, RightStuf, Discotek, Amazon, etc. For YouTube videos, make sure that it is from an official YouTube channel.
NSFW needs to be tagged, as this is a SFW subreddit. No pornographic material is allowed; take it to /r/hentai or other relevant subreddits.
The CSS of this subreddit is still a work in progress, if you find something broken, please let us know.

I think I watched this long back (20+ years ago) while channel surfing. I think it was on TV (although I watched through cable, I think it was broadcasted). I think it was Voltron but I am not sure as I don't follow the series.
The story stood out to me as being exceptionally dark for something American considered cartoon, and that's why I remembered it. In the beginning, the story seems to be about a princess (?) being imprisoned. She was later taken to another place. All I hear was she cried painfully implying she was tortured. That felt very strange to me. The plot didn't continue and switched to something else and I switched channel shortly after.
Was that an episode of Voltron or was it something else? I just want to find out the fully story of what I watched. How she ended up in that situation and what happened to her afterward, etc.
Really dug the whole style of it. It was an anime with more of a hang out vibe and less focus on the plot, even though the plot itself is kind of crazy. The main draw of it to me is the music and art style, where quite literally and metaphorically, the focus is more on the drive than the destination. Any chill, stylish, OVAS I can check out just like this? I just watched TO-Y too which has a similar vibe if not slightly different.
modern re-make of the original gigantor
Finally saw the full version of this Epic... even though the animation is dated the story still great... just started watching the updated version....
Saw an anime in the 90s that had in retrospect extremely stereotyped imagery but I’ve always wondered what it is -
Someone talking to someone else under falling cherry blossoms saying that there is a legend that beneath every cherry tree is the body of a samurai which is why the flowers are pink
I know it’s cheesy af - but I always wondered what it was as it stuck in my memory This was before visiting Japan and seeing the cherry trees and seeing umpteen other references to it so it might have been one of my first introductions to the concept
It would have been on VHS - I doubt it would have been on TV here in the UK which is still today (I assume) mind-numbing my awful for anime broadcasting unlike Spain, France, Italy, Germany and probably every other European nation.
It’s actually surprising how much I saw on videotape considering fansubs was the only way the really see anime in the mid nineties - except for manga video of course about which the less said the better. But then I did go to art college and a couple of conventions - including probably one of the las to allow the sale of bootlegged videotapes.
Nowadays anime has lost its novelty value since anyone can watch and get hold of anything at any time. Kids are spoiled for choice! But the quality of animation just seems to have been better in the 80s and 90s with a few exceptions of course.
Folks, can you help me identify what this anime is?
I used to love an anime when I was a child about some folks that were followed/helped by these pink-colored small rounded-face creatures, tiny legs and arms, big eyes, their forehead expressions seemed like they were always annoyed, even when the mouth smiled.
They were basically small pink balls with big faces and tiny members, I also remember there were female (with pony tale or something) and male creatures. Not sure if they were magical.
I can’t find this anywhere, also asked GPT but nothing 🫠
I saw this in the background of a picture of a lost loved one. Trying to figure out what it is because I didn't realize we had a shared interest in anime. I believe it's from roughly 2000.
Cyber city oedo 808
It was hard to find where to watch but I recommend this series, has a lot of action and drama. If you enjoy racing this show does not really spend a lot of time discussing specific car manufacturers, models, or engines in the way something like Initial D does. However, in my opinion it perfectly captures the rivalries, big personalities, and overall environment of professional racing in the 70s-80s.
I'm interested in getting into this franchise but I'm curious which series I should watch/watch first. Both were released the same year and have roughly the same amount of users on MAL. Is there a chronological order? or can I start with either? Is one a better place to start compared to the other?
