Thank you for the education

So, after posting earlier today, and being chewed out for following the (incorrect) feeding instructions that were given to me. I took the mouse out of my Savannah monitors enclosure, and I went and grabbed a few of each: dubia roaches, mealworms, deshelled snails and crickets, I also had very few people who were kind enough to not be rude while helping me to understand what my girl needed. So I got some calcium powder, but I also got gut load blocks. I also got two separate containers for the crickets and roaches as well as a mealworm feeder that suction cups to the side of the enclosure. The only thing that I could not find clear instruction on was how many of each thing to feed her and how often. So if anyone could kindly help me with that, it would be very much appreciated. If the only purpose of your comment is to be hateful and rude, then I would just ask that you not comment. If I would have known that what I was doing was incorrect I never would have done it and I definitely wouldn’t have posted it on the Internet, so if you can’t show grace and compassion to someone who took immediate steps to correct a mistake, then your comment isn’t needed. But I will take any and all tips and education that I can get to make sure that I’m taking proper care of my girl. And before anyone comes after me in the comments the enclosure in the background is for a snake.

Ackie feeding costs?

Hey, all! I'm really really considering an Ackie monitor, I may get one in a couple months. Someone told me babies need to be fed 10 crickets every day, Juveniles need to be fed 5 times a week and Adults need to be fed 4. All this with Calcium/Multivitamin powder dusted on 2-3 times a week. If this is wrong, PLEASE let me know! I'd love to learn and want my husbandry to be perfect.

My other concern is costs, they're Insectivores so I'm probably going to get mass amounts (1000+ at a time) of crickets, roaches, etc. All I wonder is how much is it yearly to feed an Ackie? (Mainly a baby lol)

Thanks!

How much to feed a sav and how often

Considering getting a juvenile savannah monitor. Only had beardies and leos before but I have more space and funds now. I’m aware they need insects, not meat or rodents. Only thing I’m confused about is what the appropriate amount of insects to feed them is and how often. Haven’t found any resources on this.

Female ackies sharing same space

Hey guys,

Wondering if anyone has had success (or horror stories) in keeping two female ackies together? I know two males are a big no, and female/males can work, but seeing if anyone has had success with two females? Especially two females that haven’t been raised together.

Through a series of circumstances I’ve ended up with two ackies, and would have to look at rehoming one if they’re unable to live together in the same enclosure.

Thoughts?

What does yawning indicate with Ackies?

Hello everyone, I'm still learning some of the body language with my ackie. He let's me pet him and be in his space but sometimes when I do pet him he yawns. What does this actually mean? Is it a relaxed thing or a GTF away from me signal? Never tries to bite and doesn't run away when I'm petting him.

Monitor taming

So I figured I’d share this to try and help others. This is one of my baby white throats I’m guessing 6months old maybe and this is a taming thing I’ll do with all monitors I’ll start by just touching the top of there tail and work up as far as they’ll let me without them trying to bite. When I first got her a few months ago she was by far the most aggressive monitor I’ve owned and still the only lizard that’s successfully been able to bite me and break skin so I would say this is good progress.

Will this sweet girl ever find a home due to her tiny stature ?

The sweetest sumbawa.. a rescue. We’ve had her for a little over a year now and nobody seems to want her. I wonder if it’s because she’s just so little..

I’d keep her forever if it was up to me, but the more monitors I hold on to, the less opportunity I have to save more of them!

Snoot poking!

Whenever I wear this shirt that has these gathers (rusching if you come from a garment industry background like I did lol), Liora LOVES it.

She must investigate every single one of them to see if her mommy has hidden anything interesting.

Red Ackie Monitor

OH MY GOODNESS!! I'VE FALLEN EVEN MORE IN LOVE!!! Let me explain. Yesterday I went to a reptile expo to get some f/t feeders for my snakes and to check out some awesome herps. I went to the back of the expo and I saw a red ackie, which is something I've wanted for a while. I asked if I could hold it and the vendor said "Yeah, go ahead and pick him up" I hesitantly put my hand in there not knowing the temperament of it, and picked it up from the underside. As soon as I had it out of the tote, it climbed up my arm, around the back of my neck and down the other arm to my hand. It then proceeded to climb up my chest and use me as a jungle gym. This thing would not sit still, and I loved every second of it. Especially because it was my 1st time holding an ackie let alone a monitor in general. It sat still on my shoulder for a quick second long enough for a not so blurry picture, then ran all over me again, lol. This one was $500 and I saw another one for $1,000. Are these normal prices for them?

TLDR; I held a red ackie for the first time. It crawled all over me and I've fallen even more in love with them.

Anyone else with a litter box trained ackie?

So, I know this is just an adaptation of natural behaviors, but I still think it's pretty cool.

Our ackie is basically litter box trained, and hasn't pooped in his enclosure in months. The day after a feeding when he's active, we will let him out if he wants (we have one of those shallow tupperware storage bins that's 2' by 1.5' by about 6" deep that we line with paper towels). We open the enclosure door, dock the bin to the door, and if we wants to, he'll come out. And do his business. Sometimes he'll hop straight back into his enclosure, sometimes he'll hop on one of our shoulders (his sign that he wants to go play.) If he does this, we take him to our ackie proofed room, let him run around for a 10-15 minutes, and when he wants to go back, he'll climb up onto one of our shoulders again.

Kind of like a dog scratching at the door to go out.

Update on my baby mangrove

The little pellet BB sized bump on lower back now has a puss-like bubble & has gone down. I’m thinking maybe it was an insect bite(spider bite), I’m all ears on second thoughts tho. Glad it’s going down & hopefully recovers fully.
