PNW Ideas for slope

Any ideas for how to landscape this upper portion of our yard? It’s so steep it’s impossible to mow. Was thinking about lining the fence with some bushes to give some height but the steepness at the top isn’t the same. The right side is much higher than the left so I’m worried it will make the bushes look uneven.

Any ideas?

Recommendations: Gravel bed installation and step repair

In central Ohio:

I’m looking to replace part of a large bed in the back of my house with a gravel bed (green area). At the same time, the paver steps that were installed before we moved in have settled quite a bit and need to be brought back up/repaired ( if you zoom in you can see how much they settled based on the paint line).

My thought was to pull the steps up and clear the entire area - the try to relevel at the same time as the bed since I am assuming they need the same bases, etc. but I’ve never done a project like this so open to your thoughts around the best way to approach this (methods, materials, etc.).

The bed is approx. 14x3.

Thanks in advance!

Fixing up the back yard

As you can see, the back yard is awful.

My plan (1). Scalp all the grass/weeds (2) till up all the rock hard dirt, it’s construction dirt so it’s terrible (3) lay 2-3 inches of top soil all over (4) sprinkler system put in (5) starter fertilizer (6) sod

Suggestions or thoughts otherwise?

Tall columnar plant recommendations

Looking for recommendations for tall columnar plants that can be planted in bed near foundation. Zone 6b, full sun, faces west so can be exposed to winds. Already have 5 emerald green arborvitae lining patio to the right so prefer something different but complimentary.

Can I put down grass seed and plant flowers in the same area?

I removed a ton of weedy overgrowth along my fence. The area is all exposed dirt now. I was planning to put down grass seed, but I also want to plant some dahlias, lilacs, and other things. Can I do both? Can I plant the flowers then follow the procedure for seeding? (seed, rake, water, cover, etc.) I'm not a fan of flower beds where the flowers are surrounded by mulch, especially when the flowers will be spaced apart quite a bit.

Tarp and Rock Bed under soil

I’m working on planting a flower bed for the first time at my house. When I went to dig a hole for my flowers I noticed there wasn’t a lot of space to dig (maybe 3-4” until I hit something hard). After a little exploring of the area it looks like there is a black tarp that was laid directly under our flowerbed which was placed over a mound of round white rocks which are around an inch or two. There is no dirt mixed in with the rock, if anything they appear like they’ve just been cleaned.

Any idea why this could be? Our house was a quick flip and I know the previous owner had some water damage they remediated. This is right up against my house.

How to safely eliminate grass

I have a pretty large grassy area(0.69acres) and it’s mostly fenced in. We want to get rid of all of the grass and plant something more low maintenance, like clover. I just don’t know where to begin. So how do we get rid of all the grass in a pet safe way?

Drainage along fence solutions?

I’m like 99% sure a French drain is not the answer but I am a not a landscaping connoisseur.

When we get a lot of rain my fence becomes a dam + a creek flows along it. (and drowns my flowers RIP homies) I know that the fence is way too low to the ground so I plan on taking a sawzall to the bottom to trim it out but I don’t know if that will actually fix or even alleviate the issue.

I currently have a drain spout pointing towards it (which is getting changed) but all of the neighbors gutters spit out to the same area. The previous owners decided to build a fence in the swale path so now it is I who gets to suffer.

When it rains a normal amount, it is simply sorta kinda soggy. Is it worth it to do anything or should I just let this happen? I was thinking a trench with rocks to guide it but 🙃🙃 i don’t know. Anyone have some fun ideas?

What is this 2nd pipe?

I’m trying to make my ugly culvert look better and am adding a cap that slides on it. Upon excavating a little I found 2 pvc pipes that I would have to cut back. I’m assuming the one on the left is from the sump pump, any idea what the pvc going directly into the culvert pipe is and can I cut it back? I looked in my neighbors culvert and it doesn’t seem to be going there. Thanks !

Patio questions

Hi! I'd like to build a patio here. Roughly 14 feet x 14 feet. I'm a carpenter so have a wide array of tools and building experience, but don't have any experience with patios.

I'm wondering: how long would you expect to spend just putting in a patio this size? Would you need to build in extra support somehow to support a pergola?

I haven't decided yet on what type of brick or pavers to use, but it will need to drain fairly readily.

Need help tapping into my underground sprinkler for vegetable garden - got stuck

We have an underground sprinkler system and recently established a vegetable garden in one of the zones. There are four sprinkler heads in the zone, and my intention is to cap off three of them and garden hose access to the other in order to run an above-ground sprinkler in the middle of the vegetable garden.

I purchased a quick coupling valve and swivel off of amazon, as pictured.
Now, obviously I forgot to buy the key for the quick coupling valve. That is coming on Friday. However, when I dug down to my sprinkler line, I was surprised to find threading on the inside as opposed to the outside, as pictured. Thought I did my research and probably shouldn't have been surprised by this. Anyway, I imagine I just need to get a 3/4 male to male NPT adapter, place the QCV on top of that, an put the key into it. Then comes the next problem.

Why is the threading on the top of the key still pipe threading and not garden hose threading? I've watched videos where the people are just threading their swivels on to the top of the key, but I'm not sure if they have found a swivel that is pipe thread to hose thread.

What do I need to do here to complete this and have it in working order? Also, any tips to make sure there's no debris in my line before I start making my connections? Thanks in advance.

Help growing lawn

Need help growing lawn

I recently purchased a house in December and the last tenants did not take care of their grass at all. I spread out tall and fescue seeds and It was growing great during the winter but now it seems like the socal heat has killed most of it. I put down Bermuda 2 weeks ago and I’ve been watering it daily for at least 10 minutes and 2 days out of the week it gets heavy watering (about 25-30 minutes). The grass still looks terrible and I’m not sure what to do about it. Any help would be appreciated as I’m very new to this.

How big do you think this root system is?

I know this may be crazy… we love this rhododendron but it is too close to the driveway. Do you think it would survive being moved? And how big do you think we’d have to keep the root system or dig around it?
