Is lumix gx85 good for journalism student ?

Hi, I’m currently a journalism student and I intend to take some photography classes (include photojournalism). So I plan to buy gx85 for this, but I’m not sure if gx85’s good in the long run. Or should I go for a newer one (like g90 or something else).

    (My works are mostly stills)

    Thanks for your answers!

What does it take to be a New York Times reporter?

Straight off the bat: I’m not planning on becoming a New York Times reporter. I’m not even American.

However, as a multimedia journalism student, I look up to what the Times produces in terms of visual and interactive stories.

Their combination of good ideas, comprehensive research, and impressive writing, photography, graphics and software development, is really unmatched by my country’s media. The popular web framework Svelte, of which I am a hobbyist user, was even made by a Times graphics editor.

I like to think that by learning from the best, I could one day help elevate the level of multimedia stories whereever I end up working, of course within the financial constraints of a not-the-freaking-NYT organization.

Because I’m not American though, I have no idea what it really takes to work at a prestigious U.S. paper; what skills people cultivate to stand out and work at a place like that. For those of you with a better idea, what do you think it takes?

Of course, it’ll depend on what role you have. Even though I do have skills in photography, graphics and software, all of which I have been interested in since I was a young teenager, I primarily think of myself as a reporter.

What are some of the most popular "hit-piece" articles of recent years?

Specifically interested in "hit-piece" journalism that seems to have gained in popularity in very recent years. Apologies if that is the incorrect terminology to use. Trying to get a gauge on this trend which has seemed to take aim at many pop culture figures in America, including scientist Andrew Huberman just a week ago (NY Mag), so curious if you all have any that come to mind? NOTE: I'm not looking to start a conversation regarding what's right/wrong in regards to journalism, or the validity behind some of these articles. I'm simply looking for more 'hit piece' articles like this, directed toward modern pop culture figures of influence, so that I may further my own interest into this style of writing and get a better understanding of the motivations and efforts that go into this type of writing. Cheers!

    question: Evan Gershkovich

So, here's something that I've been wondering about Evan Gershkovich ever since he was arrested by the Russians: had the Wall Street Journal been paying his salary (direct deposit to his bank account or to his family) ever since his arrest? Did they cut off his paychecks after he got arrested? If so, is someone taking care of his family financially now that their breadwinner is in prison?

What is the standard practice for this when a journalist is arrested in a foreign country? Do foreign correspondents take out insurance for these types of situations?

How to get into journalism as a non-journalism student. (Southern California, USA)

    Hi all,

I’m sure you get a ton of posts like this all the time; so I would like to apologize beforehand. I’ve even done a similar one before.

But basically I majored in political science and religious studies in college. I did two journalism internships, one film and one political. Both were unpaid, but I do have writing samples as a result and I know how to write in AP style and am knowledgeable about the SPJ ethics.

Since then, I’ve done a few odd jobs. I did a volunteer year during COVID at a food bank and the Presbyterian church and then worked for two solar energy companies (one as an analyst for a legit company and then as a door-to-door salesman for a scammy one).

I currently kind of work for the state regarding energy and conservation work.

I am wondering if it is too late to jump back into journalism, freelance or staff. I much prefer journalism to the odd jobs I’ve done.

As a student, I was my dream to cover politics of some kind (I did major in political science) for a paper. Now I feel I could write about a variety of topics, like about environmental issues, energy, and even film & media along with political news

Thank you all, I apologize if the post isn’t detailed enough or if it is the millionth post like this.

    Career advancement in copy editing?

Hi all! I have been a copy editor and paginator for the past 5 or so years, since straight out of college. I’ve worked for two really great newspapers, and have a lot of experience in pretty much every area of the newsroom. I am good at my job.

But I’m looking to advance beyond copy editing, which is hard to do. I don’t have experience leading larger projects, like developing stories or photo assignments, among some other more editorial-based duties.

I’m wondering if anyone has any advice or personal experience in how to move beyond that role. I’ve been considering maybe getting an editing and publishing certificate from a university to a little more experience in that area, but am unsure if there are better avenues to pursue that I’m not thinking of. Thanks!

Need help in making grad school decision.

Hi ! I know this question has been answered in one way or another here and y’all are sick of it but it’d be so great if I can get some insights. I’ve gotten accepted for the MS journalism programme in Columbia and Masters in journalism at Berkeley. The problem is I like the curriculum of Berkeley way more than Columbia but I’ve been told that the ‘Brand Name’ of Columbia is what’s gonna take me places. I’m just not sure how 10 months is gonna help me yk cause the Berkeley programme seems so much more in-depth. The amount of money I have to pay is about the same as an international student but obvs for Berkeley I will be able to work while studying so that might take the load off of parents’ shoulders a bit. Please help me make the right decision. Thanks! And yes I wanna go to grad school so pls don’t say anything about exploring other options instead! 😭

    Investigative Journalism - Companies

Hey! I am doing an investigative journalism project. I am trying to figures out the individual persons that went to Heather Podesta per company and spoke with her in 2022. Ie. Pepsi was her client in 2022, who from Pepsi sat down and spoke with her about their needs as a company. Not the lobbyists at Heather's company Invariant that went to Washington to lobby. Does Bloomberg Gov have that API? Also, if not, who does?
    Thx. Amanda

I'm leaving journalism next week and freaking out about it

    As the title says....

How did you get through the phase where you're overcome with guilt, regret, disappointment and "what ifs"? I know I'm making the right decision: My salary, work-life balance and mental health should improve greatly in my next gig (comms), but I still feel like I'm grieving a major loss and stuck in the "You're a good reporter. You're being praised for your work. Why would you leave this industry?" self-talk.

I've got some time off in between jobs to reflect (and hopefully just relax), but I'd love some support from others who have also experienced and gotten through this phase.
