Citizenship

Applied for my daughter’s citizenship while I’m here now in Jamaica. They told me the pick up date would be last week. I called and they told me that it’s not ready after way more than a month of waiting. So it seems like I will end up leaving the island without receiving it in time. I was hoping she would receive it before we leave because now she has overstayed her visa due to their diligence.

Do you think we will face problems at the airport even though it’s their fault it wasn’t ready in time as they promised?

Anyone else currently waiting on a citizenship to be approved through decent?

Food suggestions to send a friend in Kingston?

Blessings! I’m in the US and I’m making a gift box of snacks to send to my friend & her two boys (4 & 6yo) in Jamaica.

I want to add things that she cannot get in her country. Please let me know if you can think of anything you wish was available there.

She said they snack on potato chips, banana chips, and cheese snacks. The boys love Paw Patrol & Spiderman, so I got themed snacks too.

So far I have….

-Peeps (sugar coated marshmallows) -Cheez-its (cheddar crackers) -Combos (cheese wrapped in crackers, different flavors like pizza & pretzel) -Oreos (chocolate cookie sandwich with vanilla icing) -Kraft mac & cheese (Paw Patrol shapes) -Fruit snack gummies (Spiderman shapes) -Smores bars (marshmallow, graham cracker, chocolate melted together) -Nerds Gummy Clusters (my favorite, fruit snack gummies with Nerds candies all over them) -Fruit By the Foot (like a long fruit roll) -Apple chips

And from my area in Philadelphia

  • Tastycakes (variety of baked sweets, like coffeerolls, chocolate covered mini cakes)
  • Herrs Potato Chips (variety of different flavors)

We also have a lot of varieties of snacks like vanilla oreos, pizza “Goldfish”, macadamia nut & white chocolate cookies… it’s just harder to find them in small individual packages.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! One Love ❤️

What Goes on in Jamaica in June?

I’m coming for my bday with friends in late June, about 10 friends. I’ve been before and know it’s LIT but when I search online for parties or concerts everything seems to be in May and July. We’re party people so what’s fun to do in June besides the regular clubs & tourist attractions

Favorite American Liquor that can't be found in Jamaica?

Coming to Jamaica soon for a family funeral and want to know what I should bring to the party. Want to make fast friends with my in-laws! Any suggestions on good bottles to bring? Was thinking of some good bourbon (like Angel's Envy) but if there were something more well known than would be enjoyed by all, I'm all ears!

Any Jamaican music producers using FruityLoops (legal or cracked) here?

Recently I have been thinking of making music of my own, but I will need a DAW, and among the most popular DAWs are FruityLoops. However, the software is expensive, and as such people have used to uploading cracked copies to make their music free of cost. With that said, I have turned to the subreddit, as a Jamaican myself, to see among you who produce music using FruityLoops be it cracked or legal and give me advice depending on DAW or music production in general.

Building or renovating a house from abroad: suppliers? Thanks in advance!

How do people do it?! I've contacted 3 suppliers (known for renovating) via email a fortnight ago and have had no response. Is it simply just getting someone in Jamaica to do this on my behalf or can anyone recommend any companies?

Advice: Jamaican-American Woman Dating Jamaican Man

I'm in my early 20s, born in the US, raised by 2 Jamaican parents so I traveled to jamaica a bit throughout my life: my longest stay was almost 1 year when I was in basic school in JA. I currently go to college in the US and plan on leaving the US by the time I'm 30, and hopefully living in JA or at least abroad (this is set in stone since i was 18 and will not change).

When I was there this January I met a guy: he is a family friend, mid 20s. He's best friends with 2 cousins I'm close to down there, and my dad, uncle and grandma rate him. After I came back to the states, our cousins set us up and we've been talking for almost 3 months. When he met me, he thought I was born down there and just live in the US for college (I let everyone who I meet believe this to assimilate easier). He now knows I'm born in the US.

I went back to JA for spring break, where I got to spend time with him, meet his daughter (his only child) and he met my other grandparents. I also was around all his friends and he was with me at my uncle's house. I'm going back to see him and my family in 3 weeks. Both sides of our families know about each other, in person or via WhatsApp.

My mom's very skeptical of this relationship. She worries about him 1) breeding me or 2) using me for visa/green card/money. he has brought up marriage and us having children, mostly this week, referencing 2025 being the year. He adamantly expresses not wanting to live in the US, maybe for his wife and children and even then, preferably would stay in JA. [edit: i have told him i am too young to be thinking marriage and kids.]

So while I see the concerns my mom has, i don't see how this could apply to me because 1) i will be on birth control and using protection so breed who? 2) if i marry him way down the line (i'm not ready for marriage), that doesn't necessarily mean I would file for him. his daughter of course but that's because i will always provide opportunities for young black girls, especially Jamaican but for him, i don't see a reason to. 3) i am comfortable setting financial boundaries and he doesn't ask me for money, even when I've offered to give it to him for gas when he drives me around. I have bought stuff for him and his family but it was books and i choose to. 4) he is very close with my family and has a lot of respect for them so i feel like that decreases the likelihood of him doing something bad.

The moment we started talking he said his intentions were for us to be boyfriend and girlfriend. He was celibate when I met him so wasn't looking for women (so he says). I have been holding off on us being official because a long distance relationship makes me apprehensive and I am seeing other people as well as him and wasn't ready to leave them for him (I still don't know if I am).

But the main part of my hesitation is i grew up seeing too many people get BUN from ah yaad mon/ooman. i also feel like the babymama drama is going to wear me out, i've seen it in the US, I can image JA is worse, especially bc his bm is 10 years older than me and has has already expressed to him a disapproval of me and him.

I'm limited in experience in dating in JA, because I grew up sheltered down there. In the US, I've definitely lived much more and explored so I have a lot of experience with Caribbean-Americans (my other current partners are Caribbean-American) and I been with a few FOB Caribbeans, all who were very possessive and emotionally intense compared to American men. Caribbean American men are possessive too, they just act more nonchalant at first.

He told me he loved me within a month and after some weeks I said it back yesterday (still anxious about this), so I just need advice on how to navigate this. I also have never had sex in JA so he could be my first and my mom is also talking about HIV rates in JA.

Does Jamaica not use Imperial measures anymore?

Foreigner who just went to market a while ago. I had to buy produce in kg. I remember always buying in pounds though, so it kind of stumped me.

Jamaican Prosperity

This is a long one so strap in (Y - I know)

What's the political atmosphere on the island rn? Especially for folk downtown? I've always planned to come home, buy and build and all that but I really need it to be better than these large superpowers, namely US and UK. There's always been the xenophobia but I think it's become blatantly clear these last few years that these people who have had the reigns of the western world (and often much of everywhere else) in their hands have entered the era of the tik tok politician, and it seems they can't help themselves with how shit a job they are doing morally and practically.

So what's it like out there? Are there avenues for change? Are the people willing to get politically active? I imagine Jamaica as a hub in the Carribbean, heavily multilingual and as self proficient as possible. I want a developed rail system that connects the island, I caught word of a recommissioned train for school kids years ago but is that being improved and expanded? Are there any good looking new shows on TV that have been locally developed? Is the news crying anything but bloody murder? State of the art musems and arts centres, national reserve areas, better roads and clean up projects? Are free or subsidised healthcare and schooling on the agenda? Agriculture and responsible regenerative farming as a core module on the curriculum? Or program that sections the day into portions for working and another for theory, writing and arithmetic? I recall HEART programs, are these still going? Eliminating planned obsolescence in our manufacturing and design so we need to consume less natural resources over time? Are we investing heavily in renewable energy so we can stop relying on fossil fuel and being puppets of puppets? I believe we could be even more of a tourism powerhouse if we tweaked the system to take better care of ourselves. But lemme know what you think

I don't need exact answers to each question but it's just illustrate where my head's at. Thanks in advance👌🏾

MOVING ADVICE/WORRIES

Im actually about to ask the internet to help me make a life decision 😅😂 here we go:

I’m currently finishing up a degree in Social care and want to study psychology at Postgrad. I was wondering what my prospects would be back home with those degrees?

I’m interested in the mental health and wellbeing of kids & wrote my dissertation on discipline, parenting & education.

I’ve always said that when I get my education I’m going to take it back home. I’d love to work in a high school as a counsellor or maybe practice family therapy?

Also, people are telling me that if I move back home there’s a strong chance I’ll experience some type of crime. But there’s people here in the UK being stabbed for breathing wrong & SA related crimes aplenty 😑 They keep pointing out the murders of returning people. But I feel like they’re trying to scare me…

I’m in my 30s and the clock only goes forward… it’s time for me to p*ss or get off the pot 😅

Anyone else with stubborn parents in US?

Hi everyone! My father has lived in the US for 40 years and wants to get his Jamaican passport so he can go back home (he refuses to become a US citizen). It's been over a year of back and forth with the embassy (he's been trying since March 2023)

They're asking him to fill out paperwork proving he knows two people. Anyone have experience with this? Any advice on how to complete this long and stupid process?

For reference, I was born in the US. Took me three weeks to get my US passport. Also not sure why anyone would live in a foreign country almost half a century without becoming a citizen.

How to Build a Vibrant Social Life in Jamaica: Seeking Like-Minded Expats for Fun Adventures!"

"Hey everyone! 34-year-old female. I'm currently based in the UK, but I left Jamaica when I was 11. Despite the distance, I've made it a tradition to travel back to Jamaica every year for the past decade, spending at least one month there each time. My longest stay was for three months.

During my visits, I've always found comfort in being around my partner, who I've known since my very first trip to Jamaica. However, one thing I've struggled with is expanding my social circle and meeting new people who share similar interests.

This year, I'll be in Jamaica for an extended six-month period, and I'm eager to build a vibrant social life beyond my partner and his friends, with whom I don't have much in common. While I appreciate their company, I'm hoping to connect with like-minded souls who enjoy activities such as working out, going for walks, or even a run. You'll often find me at Emancipation Park, embracing the outdoors and staying active.

I'm also excited to explore all that Jamaica has to offer, whether it's dining out, sightseeing, or even hitting up the club scene. If you're someone who shares my passions and is up for some fun adventures, I'd love to connect and make the most out of my time in Jamaica! Bonus points if you're an expat like me."

Also, any suggestions on how to make friends welcome. I don't have a lot of money, so preferably independent people who nah look fi come dig!

Got my Jamaican citizenship, how should I use my new super powers?

I got my Jamaican citizenship last year, but haven't had time to follow up with getting a passport yet.

In the meantime, what do you guys thing would be the wisest, most practical, or most dastardly use of my new powers in the meantime?

So far, I have been casually reminding my wife that I am the only official, certified Jamaican in the house whenever she makes an unfavorable comparison to the cultural access of her south Florida upbringing to that of mine (NYC/DC/TN).

I have also made sure to wear lots of soccer jerseys, made some coco bread and have been looking for a good table to play dominoes on and some food fe nyam.

I am willing to entertain some more suggestions, though....
