Twin Falls or Boise

Which area is the best to live in?

I know they are both not the best in general, but if you had to choose one, which one would you choose?

Please check your Albertsons receipt.

I’m so over having to bring up how they never catch all the sales on your stuff. And if you aren’t paying attention you just pay whatever they tell you and move on.

Today was $4.12 refunded because “he didn’t get the grapes deal” the checker yelled to the service desk. How many people have gone through there since the ad dropped earlier this week? Without just asking “how much did those ring up as?”.

I’ve caught them for about $18.00 once on prime rib sale. “Oh sorry, it’s been doing that all day” they told me. I asked them what about the people who just paid and went on? Crickets and a blank stare.

Please look at your receipt. We are paying enough already.

2nd Congressional District Race

I just moved into the 2nd Congressional District, and I admittedly don’t know much about the incumbent Republican Mike Simpson and the Democratic challenger Dave Roth.

I lean left, but I’m trying to be pragmatic. I do know that Mike Simpson has been sponsoring bills to tear down dams on snake river, but his other votes have been… not aligned with my values. But there isn’t a whole lot of news on Dave Roth and he lost last time.

Thoughts?

Why are those voting for Trump more likely to vote no on prop 1?

I noticed it’s common to see no on prop 1 along with a Trump sign and yes on prop 1 with a Harris sign.

Honest last minute question: Do I need to change my party to be able to vote the entire ballot tomorrow?

FYI: I don't want to discuss politics (mainly with ppl in the MAGA camp lol) ,I simply am wondering if I need to change my party (day of) in order to be able to vote the entire ballot. Found out the hard way a few months ago that I basically didn't get to vote on anything because I wasn't registered as a Republican.

Property 1 Question

First off, to lay the base of my political feelings. I don't trust ANY politician any more. What I don't have a good feeling about Prop 1, is that there is NO mention of RCV in any add, radio, flyer, anything. And when I listened to a talk show about it, this same question was asked of the guest speaker. The answer? "I don't have a reason why". If its soooo good for Idaho, if everyone is so proud of it, why isn't it front and center? Not hidden and snuck in. Again, my distrust of politicians is way high on this smoke and mirror type of advertising.

Is it safe driving today around Boise to McCall?

Never driven on ice or in snow. I'm from Florida. Friend is already in McCall, says that his hotel, the entire parking lot is frozen up snow that took the shape of tire marks, boot impressions, and dark ice on the ground. How do I know if it's safe to drive in the area? I have AWD SUV.

This could be Shari’s last day..

Over the last couple of days, from reading newest reviews, the website displaying “No Locations Found” for the last 4 days, I hate that I to have made this post and so late as the website changed on Tuesday. it is becoming more and more clear that Shari’s will likely not make it through the holidays here in Washington and Idaho at least. It is heartbreaking to watch the decline of the chain. Down in California, the reviews seem a little bit better but they are also operating on a limited menu and have limited pies. Coco’s,(their substitute and Shari’s based chain founded in California, is the only restaurant seeming to get love in its primary founding locations but they too have closed many locations this year too it seems.)

If they close all Washington and Idaho locations, or file for bankruptcy tomorrow or this week I would not be surprised and should not take anyone off guard. If you can, Go get that last bite if you can everyone and sorry for the late Info if you really care about eating there before they close! The end of a historic restaurant is near..

Common sense gun legislation.

I used to work at a psychiatric facility here in Boise. Mostly in the ICU with people in severe psychosis or with severe mental health problems like schizophrenia. Some of them could be incredibly violent and deranged. I bring this up because today I was purchasing a firearm. I told the person processing my background check that you could walk right out of that facility and into a gun store and as long as your were coherent enough to check the No I have not been adjudicated to a mental health facility and No I m dont use drugs of any kind, then you could walk out with a firearm. This stirred an argument with the other person behind the desk who informed me that is simply not the case as they check mental health records. He wasn't completely wrong but this doesnt actually occur the way people think it does.

Federal law Prohibits selling or transferring a firearm to anyone who has been involuntarily committed to a mental health facility, or who has been declared mentally incompetent by a court.

  • Background checks Licensed gun dealers are required to run a background check on potential buyers through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). Some states have submitted mental health records to NICS.
  • State laws Mental health reporting laws vary by state, and federal law doesn't require states to submit mental health records to the government agencies that conduct background checks.

Having worked in mental health facility I know first hand the process it takes to be committed to the state. Its a lengthy multi week process where someone not affiliated from the state has to come visit and evaluate you. After at least three visits over a certain period of time they can commit you to the state. This is pretty rare and only happens in the most serious of cases. The nuance here is that plenty of people come in with meth induced psychosis, schizophrenia, homicidal, suicidal ideations etc and after a month or two of hospitalization get discharged. These people as long as they can pass a felony check from the federal goverment could walk right out and buy a firearm, no questions asked. They were not committed to the state. There fore none of their mental health information can be shared. There have been people in that facility for 6 months. IF we can justify keeping there for six months someone please explain to me how we can justify allowing them to have firearms? I bring this up because at one point one of them tried to kill me in the nurses station. I fought him off and he was eventually arrested and charged with battery on a healthcare worker which is a felony. Normally I would nt charge someone who is sick and struggling with mental health. It does nothing to solve the problem, but this guy was not mentally ill he was just incredibly violent and the police didn't want to deal with him, so we had to force their hand to take him. We were not staffed or equipped to deal with that level of violence. and maliciousness. He got released and three months later stabbed a guy to death here in the treasure valley. We have to do something to prevent people like this from getting access to firearms. He couldnt because he was a felon, but many people can. I m not sure what the solution is, but the reality is one of those people could walk right out of the hospital, right into a gun store, and right back into one of our schools. We are begging for this to happen by allowing these loopholes. Again I am 2nd amendment supporter. I own everything from 22LR, to 300 win mag, and everything in between. I know firearms, I know the buying process and I m proficient in their use. We must do something about this. It honestly keeps me up at night.

Recent housing market in Idaho

I am looking for a single family house in Boise/Meridian, and saw some house builders are providing incentives, like 5000 to 30,000.

My buyer’s agent told me that incentives are for contracts closing before end of this year, and if I can not finish buying this year, housing prices will definitely rise next spring.

Try to negotiate with some builders but the price of my preferred house is firm without incentive, the builders would rather have the houses on the market over 3 months than lowering the price. The average price is 300-320 per square foot.

I would like to get inputs from the community… will everything go like the agent said, if I don’t buy it now, the price will go up or there may be chances for bigger negotiation room when the houses are on the market longer? Thank you!

So grateful I left Idaho

I was born and raised in Idaho. It was a great place to grow up but I am so happy I moved to Montana 3 years ago. I do miss my family but of all the friends I made growing up only one remains in Idaho.

My wife and I met in Idaho but she is from Montana and I went to the University of Montana so we knew we wanted to move here when we knew we would be together long term.

My wife and I were expecting our second baby when she started bleeding and cramping this week. This progressed through the week until today when her bleeding became uncontrollable. I took her to the ER and she just made it through a successful D&C.

If we’d been in Idaho there’s a chance my wife may have died because of this miscarriage. We have a toddler already, my wife is my everything and the thought of losing her, and my child losing her mother, because there are people out there who are either are so dissatisfied with their own lives that they feel the need to control others or have been manipulated into thinking abortion is somehow a religious issue is just too much.

Hopefully it won’t be like this for Idahoans, and many others, forever.

What's the deal with extremely slow internet in McCall?

Staying at a hotel in McCall currently and I'm getting like 900 KBPS internet speed. I couldn't even download a small 2 GB game off of Steam. So I went to the library which has 250 megabits per second speed test result... And then when I started downloading it, it's 2.5 megabits per second speed so there's obviously some throttling and limiting.... WTF? Like I get this is a rural area, but quick Google search shows that over 90% of the area has access to fiber or high speed internet. But I can't seem to get any sort of high speed internet at all during my stay...

Is Idaho the new California?

Seems like I am seeing housing being built on land that once was farm land (crop farms). If people from California are leaving their home state to here (or else where) then why are they making Idaho like California?

Covid vaccine, MAGA, and death in Idaho.

It is a simple statement of fact that more people (Proportional to population) died from Covid in red states than did in so-called blue states.

The reason? Trump called Covid a Chinese hoax, then a Democrat hoax even as people by the tens of thousands died, and elected officials were afraid to contradict him.

Still today, conspiracy theories are spread among the ignorant, the ill informed, and even among politicians looking to make points with MAGA.

Vaccines, they tell you, have little chips in them that turn you Trans, or Gay, or into vegans and democrats, or something equally stupid that only dullards believe.

You're being told vaccines don't work, or what's almost worst they try to mnipulate you, and convince you of that with subtle misinformation such as saying approving the vaccine was the 'equiviilent of approving their safety", implying they don't work at all.

Idaho, it's your health -- think about it and your vote.

See this:

Southwest District Health, a regional public health department in Idaho, is no longer allowed to provide COVID-19 vaccines to residents in six counties along the Idaho-Oregon border. During an October 22 meeting, the health department's board voted 4-3 to ban the administration of a vaccine that protects against the virus that causes COVID-19.

The number of people receiving COVID-19 vaccines in the health district, which includes three counties in the Boise metropolitan area, has declined from 1,601 shots given in 2021 to 64 so far this year.

Idaho state health department spokesperson AJ McWhorter declined to comment on "public health district business" to The Associated Press (AP). McWhorter did say, however, that COVID-19 vaccines are still available at community health centers for people who are uninsured.

Board members who voted for the ban argued that people can get vaccinated for the virus elsewhere and that providing COVID-19 vaccines was equivalent to approving their safety.

All COVID-19 vaccines on the market have either been approved or authorized for emergency use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Researchers estimated that almost 20 million lives were saved by COVID-19 vaccines during their first year in circulation. Despite evidence of the vaccines' safety, there has been skepticism of the vaccines' effects due to misinformation that has been floated.

Dr. Perry Jansen, Southwest's medical director, testified to the vaccine's necessity at the October 22 meeting. "Our request of the board is that we would be able to carry and offer those (vaccines), recognizing that we always have these discussions of risks and benefits," he said. "This is not a blind, everybody-gets-a-shot approach. This is a thoughtful approach."

Meanwhile, there were over 290 public comments made at the board's meeting that opposed Jansen's plea.

Board Chairman 'Disappointed' in Decision

Board Chairman Kelly Aberasturi, said in the meeting and to the AP that he was supportive of the board's decision to ban the COVID-19 vaccines but also "disappointed" in it. Aberasturi, who is skeptical of COVID-19 vaccines and national public health leaders, said the board overstepped the relationship between patients and their doctors. He added that the decision could open the door to blocking other vaccines or treatments.

Jansen and Aberasturi said that people getting vaccinated at Southwest District Health had no other options. Those that the health department helped included people without housing, people who are homebound, people in long-term care facilities and people in the immigration process. "I've been homeless in my lifetime, so I understand how difficult it can be when you're...trying to get by and get ahead," Aberasturi said. "This is where we should be stepping in and helping. The chairman added: "But we have some board members who have never been there, so they don't understand what it's like."

Aberasturi said he plans to ask during the next board meeting if Southwest District Health can at least be allowed to vaccinate older patients and residents of long-term care facilities.

With the board's decision, the health department appears to be the first in the country to be restricted from giving the COVID-19 shot. "I'm not aware of anything else like this," Adriane Casalotti, chief of government and public affairs for the National Association of County and City Health Officials, Casalotti said health departments have stopped offering the COVID-19 vaccine before due to cost or low demand but not based on "a judgment of the medical product itself."

Texas did ban health departments from promoting the vaccine and Florida's surgeon general did recommend against getting the vaccine, but Southwest District Health's new move seems to be the first outright ban.

Job hunt

Currently living in another state and wanting to move back to my home state! I miss Idaho! Currently trying to find a “higher paying job” that pays more than my so in order for us to move back. I’m a licensed esthetician but have years experience in fast food/customer service with lots of training and management position and going back to school next year online for marketing. Any jobs hiring or looking to hire soon. We want to finish our lease here but if we found something that pays more we’re willing to break it! Tia

Edit: I don’t need relocation assistance. I’m just looking for a job.

18, need some help.

Not disgusting personal shit to much to go over but I applied for a position at the Boise Aquarium, as I have been looking for a role that would allow me to gain experience, educate others, learn, and care for all kinds of animals. However, I have come across pretty concerning info about the company's past, allegations related to unethical practices such as animal trafficking. Don't want to to join an organization involved in such activities, I don't wanna be connected to that... but opportunities in Idaho to work with animals are limited, especially without a college degree or significant prior experience (typically 3+ years) and finding somewhere to volunteer is impossible...especially if you need to pay bills...Does anyone have any ideas or insights on LITTERALY anywhere i could get an opportunity like that without being a part of something that mistreats and abuses animals. trying to be better and make steps forward
