Would love any unpretentious cheap non-chain places for dinner please. You know the kind of places that you'll steuggle to find on TripAdvisor/google reviews because they have no marketing dept but just make nice food?

A photo of my baptism at St. John's Church in Saint Peter Port, Guernsey in 1994. I was baptised by my grandfather who served as a vicar in a few different parishes over the years.

I'm looking to start paddleboarding and know there’s a few classes on the island. Does anyone know of any way to meet other beginners?

Cheap honest lunch tips

Stumbled across 'sunshine caffe' on Jersey the other day - cheap and unpretentious place randomly hidden on a back street that sells home made food and home made cakes. Wondering if anyone knows of a similarly hidden gem on Guernsey?

Can anyone recommend a football team to join?

Just moved from Ireland. Can anyone suggest a football team to play with? Not really interested in a team that takes it too seriously.

Thanks

Has anyone brought over a U.K. building firm for work in a personal project?

I'm in the process of trying to sell my late mother's house but the banks are making it very difficult. It may all fall through so I'm looking at other options. Have you used a U.K. building firm that you would trust again? If so who? Cheers!

What’s your view on Guernsey property prices?

I’m looking to buy my first property in Guernsey but considering the 47% rise in property prices since COVID really puts me off. I know there’s been a slight price correction over the past year but this outrageous rise makes me feel sick. It’s so difficult to consider buying a house for £600k that was sold in 2020 for £400k - it really feels like a massive rip off. Then you consider what £600k might have got you only 4 years ago.

These thoughts are making it hard for me to settle on anything. I’m concerned the housing market has been in a bubble or may continue to drop over the next year depending on interest rates in part. Has anyone else been looking and having these thoughts?

If I bought now I just see no way that property prices could increase any further or significantly over the next 5 or so years. It already seems at the level of being completely unaffordable for the majority of Guernsey.

Does anybody still speak Sercquiais?

I had read online that there are two dialects of the language : the Little Sark dialect and the bigger Sark island dialect. Is there still anybody using the dialects or is it just a language used at home by elderly people? Thank you very much for answering.

Best way to go from Paris to Guernsey

Hey everyone! I’m making a trip to Europe soon and one of the places my partner really wants to see is Guernsey. We are planning to be in Paris before going to the UK for a bit and was wondering if anyone has suggestions about the best way to get from Paris to Guernsey?

I’ve looked at flights as well as taking the train to a ferry but that sounds more complicated.

Is it safe to leave electric bikes on the road?

I want to buy an electric bike but I live in a top floor apartment and have nowhere to put it inside. Is it acceptable/ safe to leave it in the motorcycle parking on my road? I’d probably use a cover to protect it from the elements.

The Hunt for Lady Olive & The German Submarine

This documentary will be aired on Wednesday 2nd of October on BBC, then available on IPlayer, Prime and AppleTV.

Great local documentary which I am proud to have been part of.

This compelling, captivating and ultimately moving film marks the culmination of an epic four-year search for the Royal Navy 'Q' ship Lady Olive and the German Submarine UC18. These two vessels allegedly destroyed one another in a famous WW1 battle. They have lain lost on the sea bed ever since - along with the remains, in the case of the U-boat, of 28 crew. The details of the their deadly encounter have remained a mystery - until now.

The film is the result of painstaking research and dedicated investigation. It follows the trail of clues across the UK, France (including the French Military Archives in Paris), Germany (including Hamburg International Maritime Museum), Belgium and the Channel Islands. It also features spectacular underwater footage of the divers working far from shore and over 75 metres deep.

It documents extraordinary maritime archeological work with contributions from world leading U-Boat maritime archeologist Tomas Termote. And it captures every ounce of the passion and tenacity - as well as the tension - in Taylor's intrepid team.

Narrated by David Harewood OBE, 'The Hunt' features movie quality CGI reconstructions of the fateful battle plus detailed CGI maps depicting the search areas and key locations. It also features interviews with descendants of the Royal Navy crew and a former U-boat commander - the result is an unforgettable piece of documentary filmmaking that not only captures the intense highs and lows of its production - it also honours the tragic and heroic events of its inspiration.

Making friends

Hi, I am 24F and I have just moved to Guernsey for work and I was wondering what's the best way to make friends, I saw a post a couple of days ago asking the same and responses where about joining sports clubs, how do I find different sports clubs? Is there any pages I can join as I would like to meet new people, I start my job tomorrow so I know I will be around people and I hope I make friends there but I would love to make friends outside of work too.
