Hey boy! The sub for all things Manx!
Welcome to the Isle of Man subreddit!
Surprisingly enough a sub for the Isle of Man!
News, discussion and pictures of your favourite place are fine. Good causes can also be promoted but please do not submit advertising for local businesses, we all get a copy of the courier delivered.
NO PERSONAL INFORMATION! I can't stress this enough, as we're a very small island and a very small sub, this is a golden rule. (Also, in light of recent events on the island, this rule is now golden rule number 1 never ever to be broken. Breaking this rule will result in a permanent ban)
Any submission must be about the island, either new stories, pictures or questions.
Please be civil. This isn't your personal flame board, this is a place for all redditors from the island.
Please refrain from personal promotion. This really isn't the place for it.
Please send any questions about the sub to the mod team via "message the moderators" and not via PM, this will enable us to recognise sub related issues.
No Political Canvassing This sub is apolitical. In light of the up and coming Manx elections, please open the floor with your ideas, not your promotional materials, manifestos etc.
THANKS TO /u/georfs FOR THE BANNER!

Thanks in Advance!
Guys, the hospice charity shop on the strand between M&S and Victoria road is selling Sealed Lego sets. I saw the ghostbusters firehouse(£500) and dr who(£130) among several others. It’s the window display.
In the last few days I have applied for a mortgage in principle from hsbc. I received an email response with an audit and a copy of the form I submitted but nothing else. Has anyone else applied through hsbc? Did you get a second email with a confirmation letter or something similar? How long did it take?
Hi,
Im planning to obtain a motorcycle license on the IoM. What is the general procedure to do so?
AFAIK:
Apply (and take) theory drivers test at IoM College. There are no prerequisites like minimum theory lessons taken.
Having passed the theory test successfully, I can book my practice test online straightahead.
However: I have no personal motorcycle yet. Do I have to take the practical test with a company like Ride Safe and they would provide me with a motorcycle? And: Are there any minimum practical numbers of lessons required to be taken before the actual test?
This is my first time buying and I'd like a professional who can advise me on all the technicalities, government schemes I might be eligible for, all the taxes and stuff.
Any recommendations?
I bought TT Isle of Man 3. I can't even ride 100 meters without crashing. I was always terrible at riding games but when I revisited Ride 3 after 4 years I actually started doing well with all assists on. Fast forward 4 years and I couldn't even do that.
I'm old. I got into gaming in 2019 because a friend told me it would help with my anger management which it has done. I play mostly FPS like Battlefield and CoD multiplayer which were brutal when I began. Even now I'm not very good after all these years but I can play enough to have fun.
I bought The Valentino Game which I could actually play with assists. It reignited my interest in racing games. So, I bought TT3.
I have one hour in the game. Should I keep trying until I learn it or should I just refund i?
Is it possible at my age of 41 to actually learn such a difficult game? I have no real life biking experience.
Thanks in advance for your input.
Was wondering if anyone knew where you can get toffee or candy apples on the island?
I've checked big stores like Tesco (website says they sell them during Halloween time but store here have none), but I can't think of anywhere else that might have them!
Hi there, been trying to sell a moped on Facebook groups but not been successful. Was a bit of an impulse purchase and now just trying to get rid of it at not too much of a loss…any suggestions please?
Might very seen my last post. Might aswell go for something like this instead as I doubt I'd use a gaming pc or laptop fully
Does anyone here know if/when Salmons shoe repair shoe on Strand Street will reopen? Or, failing that, if there is another cobblers shop that does good work? I have several pairs that need work.
Thinking about getting a gaming laptop on credit but kinda don't want to go with currys with how much they actually add onto the original price (£400 more).
Is there anywhere else that offers flexible payments?
Hello, I am a employed full time and am looking to take on a second job self employed earning a comission based income which means i won't always have an income but it could be significant amounts at times.
I am just worried about this tax wise - will this mean i will have to get a new tax code for my full time job? Does any one know how much I will be taxed on my secondary income? Sorry I am clueless when it comes to this.
I have never had a secondary income so am just concerned, i don't want to get totally stung by the tax man and it not be worth it.
Hi all, I’m planning on bringing a car over from the UK. My question is, since you can’t tax the car until it’s had a roadworthiness test, am I fine driving around in the car until then?
Looking for a job for my youngest daughter 13yo. Shop or similar I don’t mind doing it with her. We used to do the Courier till they stopped deliveries!
Hello, I visited your beautiful island back in 1979 when I was around 7 years old. I remember staying in what I thought was a large old terrace house with steps leading up to it, and I think it was called the "Granada" (Hotel?) But it might have been a b&b and not a hotel. If it rings a bell with anyone I'd love to know if I am remembering it correctly. Also, what street was it on?
So popping over (I hope) in November for my last visit of the year for a few days to do some wandering around the glens etc.
Any other suggestions that are worth while considerations (I'll prob bring the car) ?
Thanks
Terran
Ps does any one know when the lights go up in Douglas?
I'm convinced of a conspiracy, either deliberate or people just acting out of some kind of national compulsion.
I went for a walk in a t-shirt today (late October) and now I'm relaxing in the sun. I lived in southern-ish England for a long time and honestly didn't notice any significant differences there. Like yeah maybe it rains heavier here, but if its raining you aren't going out anyway.
Even yesterday someone from Iceland was warned about "the weather!!!". Like Jesus he's from Iceland I think he knows a thing or two about weather.
Anecdotally I would say there are more actual moments of sun in the northern parts (sunny Ramsey amirite?) than the UK.
Anyway perhaps the conspiracy is trying to keep people away and selfishly counteract the tax benefits. Who knows what chaos would ensue if people found out that the weather wasn't really that bad.
Hey everybody!
I’m thinking about going to the beautiful Isle of Man on a holiday next spring/summer. I’m from Iceland and I saw you have an mountain called Snaefell wich I thought was very interasting as we in Iceland also have mountain called Snæfell and a glacier called Snæfellsjökull (Snæfellglacier) and also Snæfellsbær (Snæfellstown). I also saw a town called Laxey (lax is salmon in Icelandic) Is there more places or towns with old norse names? Looking forward to go to Isle of man and learning more about your history and our similarities.
Do people not realise that most of the GPs, and general health service alongside many other government sectors are made up of migrant workers, why are we trying to scare this workforce away ?
Due to working at one of the hotels near the promenade, we're used to the usual rotting kelp smell but even guests have commented on the unusual stink. We currently think it's to do with the drains or something of the like
Abuse welcome, this is Reddit after all!
I wonder if anyone can vouch for a removal firm, UK to IoM? We have a range of quotes from (too good to be true) through to (mid range Kia) 😂
I need to thin the heard a little, we’d prefer to use island businesses :)
Hi guys,
With Labour’s planned hike on capital gains taxes, I am strongly considering a permanent move to the Isle of Man to shelter unrealised gains.
This is preliminary and I am weighing options.
I would have paid 20% as a fair share to maintain my life here in the UK, but some reports suggest it could rise to 33%- 39%; which is frankly absurd.
Apologies if this comes across the wrong way. I realise it is a privileged position to be complaining about CGT.
I was wondering if anyone else here has done something similar and has an experience to share regarding how it went for them.
Thanks!
I'm seeking to move into engineering industry, already tried with Astrea, RLC and Kiartys but seems like they're not interested. Do you know any other companies specialized in manufacturing/quality control or similar? TIA
I've just moved back to the island and am frustrated that YTP is not available in this region - Does anyone know why, and is it something that we can campaign for here through the MHKs or is it a Youtube side issue?
Cant seem to find it can someone please share the link?
