Is there really security cameras out in the middle of the woods?

I live in the PNW and sometimes go bike riding on tree farm property, this is allowed where I go, just no motorized vehicles allowed. There have been times I am miles into the woods and come across a locked logging gate with signs stating no vehicular access and so on, and many of them also have signs posted saying security cameras in use. I have never seen a security camera out in the middle of the woods, so curious is this actually true, are they bluffing? Or are they using something like game cameras to catch illegal activity?

Selkirk College or VIU forest technology program

Hey! Got accepted into the Forest Technology Programs with Selkirk college and Vancouver Island University. However I am having a bit of a tough time with the decision. Both locations I would be happy living in but curious to know if anyone has any input on their experiences at the schools are knows the differences between programs.

How to become a forestry tech or aide?

I am a member of natural resource and energy crew for the California Conservation Corps. I joined to get my start in forestry (I went to school for something completely unrelated).

Is there a way I can get started as a forestry tech or aide?

I do eventually want to go back to school for forestry or environmental studies, but is there a way I can get started now based on my experiences?

I have been on multiple work spikes to the Redwoods to build and rehabilitate trails and I have been on different groundskeeping crews. I also have previously worked as a land surveying technician before. I’ve done construction surveying, topographic surveys, and as-builts.

Would this be enough to apply for a technician or aide position?

I am located in the LA/Orange County area. I prefer someplace not too far, but I am willing to relocate anywhere

Thank you

Forest science research and higher education

Hello all. I’ve got a question for those who are involved with forestry research, or just scientific research in general in relation to forest ecology - where did you start?

I’m currently a forester in the northeast US. I’ve recently passed 2 years in this field, and i’ve discovered that while I care about forestry, I am much more interested in the research side of things. I want to play a part in answering some of the scientific questions we as forest managers face. I think a goal of mine is to work for one of the USFS research stations, or something of the like.

My question is - where do I start? I’ve gathered that higher education is necessary in order to become a scientist or researcher. I just don’t know where to begin. Which programs should I look into? I figure programs that delve into forest ecology and biology are a start.

Any advice is appreciated.

A new documentary film about American reforestation workers

I made a documentary about the guest workers who do most of the commercial tree planting in the United States. It airs nationally tonight on PBS, and I figure some of you all might be interested.

This is the website for it, and here's a trailer......

Forestry school

I am 16 years old, live in Ontario, get absolutely shit grades in school. After high school I want to go to Algonquin college in pembroke for forestry, mostly so I can be a wildland firefighter in Ontario for a few years through school and then move to somewhere prettier like bc or Alberta and be a woodland firefighter there. My question to you all is the difficulty level of getting into forestry programs, tell me your experience and let me know what how you have done it, thanks

Skid with mulcher head/ hourly price

In the process of acquiring ASV 135F and likely a vail mulcher head. This will be used for light forestry removal on individual plots of land and a large subdivision and also construction work. This is located in Missouri and from what I can tell there aren’t any other tree removal services or land clearing services around here that have any equipment this large. What would be an hourly rate that you guys would charge to run this combo or a per acre rate to clear? Thanks for the help.

Can anyone tell me more about USFS Pathways Internship positions?

Hi! I got a pathways position at the forest service for hydrology, and I'm wondering if anyone knows if that can be converted to a full time position at the end of the internship? I'm a student, but I have all my course requirements complete except one class. Can I take one class online and work full time at the end of the summer? Does anyone have any more pathways resources?

Becoming a Professional Forester in Indiana

I'm looking to become a forester in northern Indiana. Looks like Indiana Code requires either a four year SAF accredited forestry bachelor degree, or else a Bachelor of Science Degree in Wildlife management. I've added the referenced portion of code below.

I'm 26 with a son, and a four year Bachelors degree in Forestry isn't a possibility right now. On the other hand, an online degree in Wildlife Management, say with Unity Environmental University, would be possible. From the research I've done, it seems like the really good money is in being an Independent Forestry Consultant, since your earnings aren't dependent on your employer, so that's what I believe I'd like to aim for.

Would having a Wildlife Management Degree be limiting career-wise over a forestry degree? Is getting a degree even worth it in the first place? What does the difference in pay look like with a degree vs no degree, and being a consultant for a logging company vs independent? Many thanks folks : )

312 IAC 15-1-7 "Management plan" defined Authority: IC 6-1.1-6-16; IC 14-10-2-4 Affected: IC 6-1.1-6 Sec. 7. As used in this article, "management plan" means a written document prepared by a district forester, or by a professional forester or wildlife biologist and approved by a district forester, which meets the following requirements: (1) The plan is prepared in consultation with the owner or an authorized representative of the owner and signed by the owner or an authorized representative of the owner. (2) The plan adequately describes the forest plantation land, native forest land, or wildland being entered into classified status. (3) The plan prescribes management practices for the classified land that: (A) meet the objectives of the owner; and (B) satisfy IC 6-1.1-6 and this article.

(4) The plan promotes sustainable timber production, wildlife habitat management, or watershed protection as appropriate to the land type.

I'm having trouble finding businesses that sell logs.

I live in Western Pennsylvania and I am trying to find someone that will sell 100 to 150 logs so that I can mill them myself to build a house.

I did a Google search and got a list of everything within the state under the heading of forestry or logging or woodwork. I ended up with a list of 35 businesses. Most of them don't sell logs. Half the remaining don't answer their phones or email. The rest don't even seam to know what I'm asking or have no clue what it would cost like no one had ever considered building a log cabin before.

I ended up with one guy that said he could probably work something out but didn't know how much it would cost, and another guy that said he would sell me White pine at $1.83 per board foot. Since nobody else is giving me prices I have no idea if that's a good deal or not.

At this one point I'm wondering if I'm going about this all wrong. Is there a better way to do this? Are there log brokers?

I've also heard that you're not allowed to take firewood outside the county it was cut in. Is that accurate? Does that mean I have to buy logs procured from inside my county? I found one place that seems to be selling Southern yellow pine for $30 per log, but they are in Missouri.

I could really use some insight on this subject. I don't know much about it and I don't even know what questions to ask.

Co-worker is failing plots due to 1mm difference in DBH. Can freezing conditions affect dbh by that much?

We don't count trees below 9cm dbh and the auditor got 8.9. Can the water in the tree expand the bark minimally?

Help Identifying Bark Beetles

Hello!

I'm located in the California/Nevada Sierras. In the last few years we've had to fell a few pines on our property that were cut into rounds and sat in the backyard. This fall I chopped a majority of those rounds, and I found a lot of little critters in and around them while splitting. Most of them looked like beetles, but I wasn't able to find any images of Bark Beetles online that looked like what I was finding in the wood.

Any knowledgeable folks out there who can help identify whether any of these guys are bark beetles (and what species)? Also, is it fair to be worried about bringing any split wood inside if these are indeed bark beetles?

College Choices

I am a high school senior planning to study forestry in college. After getting my acceptances, I am having trouble deciding which college is the best choice for me. I am stuck between University of Tennessee Knoxville and NC State. From what I hear, NC State has one of the best programs in the country. However, they have given me no scholarships and the out of state tuition is very expensive. UTK gave me a $13,000 scholarship, and potentially more to come, which makes the tuition 10k less than NC. Is it worth paying 10k extra a year to go to NC State over UTK?

Is another degree worth it?

Would getting a degree in Spanish or a masters degree in a forestry related field be beneficial for my career?

Hi all. Some relevant background info- I work in the forestry industry. As such, I work with a lot of Spanish speaking contractors who either speak no English or broken English.

I know enough Spanish to get by, but not enough to feel confident in speaking it to the contractors. I'm wanting to get another degree, but this time online so I can still keep my job. I just can't decide if a Spanish degree would be worth it and/or valuable!

In this industry, I know it would be a huge advantage for me to be semi or completely fluent in Spanish. I just can't decide if an actual degree would be worth it, or if I should just try to continue learning it another way and then just list fluent in Spanish on my resume without a "certification" to back it up.

I know a masters in a forestry related field would probably be more beneficial in terms of another degree, but I'm also not 100% sure.

Thoughts, opinions, advice, questions all welcome!!!

Forestry programs

Hi I’m 24 and considering returning to school for forestry. I have BA in environmental studies and finance from a college in Iowa, I’m from PA. I have a couple years of experience with in field land stewardship and I loved it.

I had to move back home with my parents and got an office job at a small non profit and hate it lol. I’ve been trying to get an entry level job in forestry bc working with a chainsaw and trees made me realize how much I like it. Every job I apply to says I’m not qualified which is completely fair and accurate cause env studies has nothing to do with forestry tbh.

So my big question is it worth going back to school for a forestry degree? Is there another path that doesn’t require another 4 years of school? Should I get a bachelors or masters? I’d like to stay in the northeast so if you know of any programs please let me know!

Thank you for any help you give :)

Questions about Colorado state forest service.

So I graduated back in May of 2022, since then I tried to go the wildlife route which was fun (got to do grizzly bear research!) but ultimately forestry is where the job security is you know. Plus I love forestry anyway. However, all I have is a bachelors in forestry and wildlife management with no experience in forestry work. I’m applying to the Colorado state forest service “forester - open pool” position. The required qualifications state “two years professional forestry experience”. I do possess multiple of their stated “preferred qualifications”. So a few questions I have are:

1.) how negotiable is the required experience? I’ve heard people say it depends on different factors and agencies. What other factors could be considered?

2.) anyone here that works for CSFS that could give me some insight into what I should be advertising to them in my resume that would stand out the best?

2.) does anyone know if they provide housing in the areas where a foresters salary couldn’t cut it?

3.) is there anything I should keep in mind when considering working for them?

Any insight would be fantastic! Would love to hear some real world experiences and perspectives.
