Survey for parents/caregivers to children aged 2-12 - looking at what children know about sharks

Hi everyone,

I am a scientist from Australia I am looking for participants, across the world for some new research I am doing.

Are you the parent/caregiver of a child aged 2-12 years? If so, we kindly invite you to participate in our short online survey about sharks. We are interested in what children know about sharks, so this survey involves you completing a couple of questions about sharks, and then asking your children some questions about sharks. You will then be asked to write what your children say or what they do (e.g. if they use hand gestures).

LINK TO SURVEY:

https://research.unisa.edu.au/redcap/surveys/?s=XYPHMNMKFEJR7H4P

Please also feel free to send to any one you know who might be interested.

The survey takes approximately ten minutes per child to complete, if you have more than one child aged between 2-12 they can all participate.

This study has received ethics approval from the University of South Australia (#206267). If you have any queries, please contact the lead researcher: Brianna.lebusque@unisa.edu.au

How do I save local pond??

Hello! I am a resident of Newport, RI where a local beloved pond, Almy Pond, has become unhabitable due to high levels of pollutants. My university professor has been conducting research on the water quality for the last four years, but so far the city has not cared one bit. How can I convince my city to care about the pond and its health? Many plants and animals living in/around the pond have suffered and even died due to its health decline. The pond has high levels of e. coli and other pollutants, but the city refuses to track the source.

Should I make a petition and go door to door? Would that even work? Does anyone have any cost-effective or time-efficient suggestions? Any advice is welcome. Thanks in advance!!!!

Anyone working to clean pharmaceuticals out of waste water?

There is lots of research on pharmaceutical pollution in waste water. For instance, the Cary Institute alone has several articles on it: https://www.caryinstitute.org/search-results?search_api_fulltext=pharmaceutical .

There are now plenty of places allowing safe pharmaceutical disposal to keep people from flushing unwanted pills, but the real problem is that nearly everyone is on extended-release drugs that are being excreted in their waste. The pharmaceuticals remain in the water after treatment. It's been known to be killing wildlife for more than twenty years, but it's only a matter of time before it starts affecting humans as well.

The drugs are in the water in unknown concentrations and unknown mixtures, making the effects entirely unpredictable. Every form of life is taking them in with the water they drink, and many of them build up in the body over time. Every drug used by humans and domestic nonhumans—prescription, veterinary, or street—is going into the water faster than it is being broken down. Some of them have such long half-lives that there is no way to know if they will ever be gone.

I cannot, however, find anyone even talking about doing anything about it. It does not seem to register as a problem; when I talk about it, people are dismissive, even though literlally eveeryone they know—including their children—is exposed. Minoa, New York, put in a system a dozen years ago, but as far as I can tell the program that set up their system no longer exists, the scientist moved back to the UK and retired, and I could raise no response from the Minoa water department, even though I am also located in NYS.

I have been looking for years for anyone who is trying to solve this problem. In the interest of full disclosure, my sister, who suffers from severe anxiety issues, refuses to take any meds, even though they are the only thing that ever helped her, until and unless our city's waste water is so treated. She is completely incapacitated by this decision, but I can see her point. Something must be done, and I cannot interest anyone in doing anything toward that end.

So . . . is anyone here aware of any group trying to do anything about this, even if it is just trying to raise awareness outside the scientific community?

Thank you.

Who’s responsible #Climatechaos?

Who’s responsible #Climatechaos? https://hamishcampbell.com/whos-responsible-climatechaos/ The climate crisis demands urgent and radical action, to balance this pushing of mess, while individual choices play a small role, placing the burden solely on this as the oil CEO does is adding to the mess and a distraction from the path we need to take.

Global Action Against Polluters and Destroyers of the Planet

We, citizens of the world, concerned about the state of our planet and the climate emergency, call upon the following environmental and legal organizations, as well as those who wish to repair the world with us, to join forces to organize a global action to hold polluters and destroyers of the planet accountable for their actions.

We call upon these organizations to contact each other to organize an international trial aimed at prosecuting companies and individuals responsible for pollution and environmental destruction.

This trial should:

-Gather solid and well-documented evidence of environmental damage.

-Use international laws to prosecute the responsible parties.

-Raise public awareness and mobilize global support for this cause.

-Collaborate with governments and international institutions to ensure the effectiveness and legitimacy of this action.

Why is this important?

The current environmental crisis threatens the survival of many species, including our own. The actions of polluters and destroyers of the planet have devastating consequences on ecosystems, human health, and the climate. Unfortunately, many governments do not take the necessary measures to address these issues, and those who try are often hindered by corporate power and corruption. It is therefore imperative that the citizens of the world act together, without waiting for government intervention, to protect our planet.

It is crucial to remember that some corporate leaders, much like other historical figures, are fully aware of the damage they cause. Nevertheless, they continue their destructive actions, endangering the future of our planet and its inhabitants. It is time to hold them accountable for their actions.

We need your support!

By signing this petition, you are helping to send a strong message to environmental and legal organizations, urging them to unite for this crucial cause. Together, we can make a difference and create a more sustainable and equitable future for all.

How Can Brands Communicate Genuine Sustainability Efforts More Effectively?

Hey, guys! I was wondering if there’s something you look for to determine a brand’s sustainability efforts?

As a sustainability researcher, I’ve seen a huge rise in the demand for brands to communicate their sustainability efforts transparently. Stakeholders today aren’t just satisfied with vague promises or flashy buzzwords—they want hard facts.

However, many companies still struggle to get this right, often due to tight margins, greenwashing, compliance complexities, or simply not having the right tools.

And I think one of the biggest issues is a lack of understanding about what stakeholders really want to know.

Whether it’s real data on environmental impact, clear progress updates, or honest social responsibility metrics, most companies in my radar miss the mark by not delivering the right info in the right way.

What about you guys? What should companies be clearer about when it comes to reporting their sustainability actions? This conversation can help brands understand and better communicate their efforts, and we can all push for more transparent, ethical communication from the companies we support. Feel free to share your thoughts!

Embracing Hybrid and Electric Cars in India

India is facing a significant challenge in reducing pollution, lung diseases, deaths, and climate change. One of the most effective solutions is to adopt hybrid and electric vehicles. Here are some compelling reasons why:

Reduced Emissions

Hybrid and electric cars produce significantly lower emissions compared to traditional petrol or diesel vehicles. This is because they use electric motors that do not emit tailpipe pollutants. Electric vehicles (EVs) produce zero tailpipe emissions, while hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) produce fewer emissions due to their dual power sources[2][3].

Improved Fuel Efficiency

Hybrid cars combine the efficiency of electric motors with the power of internal combustion engines. This results in better fuel efficiency, reducing the amount of fuel consumed and the resulting emissions. For example, the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara offers a fuel efficiency of 15.40 km/L, significantly better than traditional vehicles[1].

Lower Maintenance Costs

Electric and hybrid vehicles require less maintenance compared to traditional vehicles. They have fewer moving parts, which reduces the need for frequent servicing. This translates to lower maintenance costs and less downtime, making them more cost-effective in the long run[2][3].

Enhanced Driving Experience

Modern hybrid and electric cars offer a smooth and quiet driving experience. They are designed to provide quick acceleration and responsive handling, making them enjoyable to drive. Additionally, they are equipped with advanced safety features, ensuring a safer ride for passengers[1][2].

Government Incentives

The Indian government is promoting the adoption of hybrid and electric vehicles through various incentives. These include lower registration fees, reduced road tax, and tax benefits. This makes hybrid and electric cars more affordable and accessible to a wider range of consumers[3].

Future of Transportation

Hybrid and electric vehicles are the future of transportation. They are already being adopted globally and are expected to become the norm in the coming years. By embracing these technologies, India can reduce its dependence on fossil fuels, improve air quality, and contribute to a cleaner environment[3].

Conclusion

Embracing hybrid and electric cars in India can have a profound impact on reducing pollution, lung diseases, deaths, and climate change. With their improved fuel efficiency, lower emissions, and enhanced driving experience, these vehicles offer a viable solution for a more sustainable future. The government's incentives and the availability of a wide range of models make it easier for consumers to make the switch. By adopting hybrid and electric cars, India can take a significant step towards a cleaner and healthier environment for all.
