Long-time Superman fan here, love the first Donner film, slight apologist for the Singer film, completely split down the middle on the Snyder film. I'm not a fanatic for any of them, and I think there's still room for the "perfect" Superman film. I hoped Gunn would be the one to do that.
The latest teaser kind of destroyed that hope though.
It's not that it looks like a bad film, but I was crushed to learn that Henry Braham would be shooting it, the guy who shot The Flash and The Suicide Squad. He's not good at lensing epic imagery - to me, his stuff always looks like glorified television visuals - and even JUST from this teaser, it's super obvious to me he was mismatched for this material.
I wish studios and directors would realize the cinematographer is probably THE most important person on these comic book productions. They're the ones in charge of the literal PANELS. When you look at the truly best comic book movies, they're the ones with fantastic cinematographers with the experience needed to capture the AWE of the material.
Unsworth on Superman. Pope on Spider-Man 2. Pfister on The Dark Knight. Fong on Watchmen.
These were guys with a trained eye for visual weight and scale. Without that, it's almost obligatory to me that Superman Legacy won't be worth all the dramatic anticipation. It really just looks like an okaaaay comic book movie, like a cut above Aquaman but that's it.
To be clear, I like the cast and I like the fact that they're going for a very COMIC BOOK vibe. But you can't JUST have a vibe.
It's just disappointing to see. But idk, maybe I'm being too cynical? What did you think of the teaser? Maybe some of your positivity will rub off on me.
Earlier I saw a tweet saying "Superman is inherently right wing because he's a strong white male." Another guy said "Superman is actually inherently left wing because he was created by a Jewish man and beats up a wife beater in his first issue". Not only does NEITHER of those criteria have anything to do with what political side you're on, but it shows a fundamental misunderstanding of the character.
Superman is a small-town Kansas farmer who fights for objective morality, law and order, truth, justice, and the American way.
Superman is also a Metropolis urbanite and the ultimate immigrant of the world who fights for equality for all people and is a champion of the oppressed.
He is family oriented and fights for family values but without all of the racism and homophobia that fascists pervert it with. He'd hate extremists in general (like Hitler or Stalin) but there's no way he's inherently one side or the other.
Edit: Changing the title to clear up confusion. A lot of people interpreted this as me saying Superman is never political and we need to keep all politics out of it. That is not the argument.
Upon my initial viewing in 2013, I wasn't impressed by it. In fact I was quite critical.
But having seen a long slew of bad comic book movies since, I've come to appreciate what was in fact a very good, respectable effort from Snyder. It took those terrible cookie-cutter movies to remind me that MoS....
....so yeah, I felt compelled to write this post having seen the new Superman trailer - which, despite not being impressed by it, I'll try to reserve judgement. I've also been very critical of the Snyderverse (which I still believe was a complete disaster and most of the movies were awful), and so I felt it fair to give Man Of Steel its props.
Your thoughts on the early comparisons between MoS and the new Superman trailer?
A dumb joke I thought of while discussing if Gun would dare to kill Krypto
he’s had enough.
I've only ever been a "moderate" Supes fan. I saw the trailer today and figured "why not?" as I clicked it. Before I say anything, let me say I am one of many who have been overtly critical of DC's recent projects. I believe that better stories could be told and that the studio has really shot itself in the foot over the past decade.
That being said...
I have had a terrible year. The kind of year that turned me from an optimist to a nihilist. I've had a year of death and loss and I'm not out of the woods yet. And I clicked the trailer thinking "why not?"
I don't care.
I don't care if the movie is absolute dogshit from the get-go. I don't care if every single review on earth tells me not to waste my money. I don't care if James Gunn sinks the DC relaunch from the first swing.
That trailer made me flat-out cry.
Starting with our protagonist on the ground, wheezing in near-defeat. We still hear wheezing as we see Clark Kent. Then we see him whistle, and our re-enforcement arrives. A companion modelled after a rescue, just like the dog who has been my steadfast companion through this hell year. Then, we barely see our Superman in strife again as he fights, both damning and praising chants in the background.
And every time the music swells? The whistle plays in the background. Until the last note, a rallying cry to get the fuck up and get moving forward.
I don't care. Make fun of me all you want. I needed this, and so did the 8 year old in me. I don't need dark and edgy, I need hope.
So, the Superman teaser trailer just came out, and based on reading other threads and thoughts, I think I have some rough predictions for what the plot of the movie could be. I would just like to say, I have no idea whatsoever if this is correct in any way, so I'll mark this as a spoiler just in case.
So, we have Superman, a couple years into his career, feeling out the idea of him and his place in the world. Lex Luthor doesn't like Superman (probably because he's an alien) and creates Ultraman (basically the Bizarro of this movie) a Superman clone who is working with Rick Flag Sr. and The Mechanic, who is part of the Authority, a government team of superheroes in DC. Sooner or later, the DCU's version of the Justice League (or maybe Justice Society?) comes in to (maybe) apprehend or talk some sense into Superman. At the same time, "kaijus" are wreaking havoc on Metropolis, possibly being set up to be Superman's fault.
Thoughts?
^!
Personally I’d reveal Batman in a super café bit where they both talk about the events of the movie before ending at “BECAUSE I’M BATMAN”
How much inspiration do you think will have taken from All Star Superman? According to the teaser, there are a few things that stick out for me that looks a part of this storyline but many that isn’t. What are your thoughts?
Mr. Terrific costume actually looks decent but Gardner and Hawkgirl look like cosplay.
So last night I watched the latest episode of Creature Commandos, and now finally the last episode of Peacemaker. Bruh, why are the Snyderverse characters here? Wasn't this supposed to be the new DCU? The last episode of Creature Commandos made reference to the events of The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker. And now we have a glimpse of the DCU's new Superman in Creature Commandos. So my question is... what is happening here? Is there any justification for why characters from the Snyder universe are in the DCU? Will this be explained? So will Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn appear on The Brave and the Bold? I'm so confused lol
