Where to get a computer

I used to get a desktop computer at My Tech Guys every 5-10 years or so. It was so easy. Walk-in tell them what I need to do and they recommended either a low, middle or high end machine they built and sold. Now I see My Tech Guys is sold.

Anywhere else in the valley that provides this service? The idea of going to Best Buy and sorting through all the marketing shit is extremely unappealing.

Snowmobile!

Hey! I was wondering if you can rent or share? A snowmobile for Mount Washington. I used to SM in the North West Territories and had a blast, even had to spike the throttle across open water. Any options on the island? I'm open to renting ftom individual or tagging along if you got more than one. I can offer Pay fuel, pay usage etc

Edit: I used mount Washington as a POI. I know you can't ride in park boundaries.

Passport processing

Random question for anyone that recently got a new passport.

I finally become a citizen next week, after 12 years of permanent residence. I’m going to choose the e-certificate option for my citizenship certificate… which should arrive in less than a working week.

How have wait times been lately for passports?

Is it worth missioning down to Victoria and going to the passport office in person. I’ll be travelling to Mexico with the family for Christmas… and need to have things ready to go.

Need moving supplies?

I have boxes (S, M, L) and some bubble wrap for breakables if anyone wants it. I’d prefer to see it reused, otherwise I’ll recycle it.

Let me know if you want it.

Salmon run this year

Hi all,

I'm looking for salmon enthusiasts wanting to share their knowledge, experience and fascination on these amazing fish.

I've a few questions I'm curious about, but please feel free to share anything about salmon you'd like. Also, book sharing is greatly appreciated :)

Do you know how early the salmon came to the Puntledge river this year? Last year I remember it being in the first week of September. When did they arrive this year?

Is it normal for different rivers to have salmon coming in earlier or later in the season? When the Puntledge was flooding with fish, I remember a river close to Victoria being almost empty.

Where can we follow updates on dam removals that help salmon migration routes?

Thanks all, have a good day!

Bike lane

Hello. I’ve pretty much using my e-bike ever since I got it. I am so thankful and grateful to the valley for being so bike friendly! Just a clarification, I needed to go to Courtenay downtown to vote during the provincial election and I noticed that much of the downtown streets don’t have a bike lane there. I know for a fact that you are not allowed to use the side walk for bike, so that time I used the road but then a lady started pointing and shouting at me that I am not supposed to do that. I am so confused and a little bit traumatized at that incident. Am I doing something wrong/illegal here? I always made sure that I am following the rules and not bothering anyone when I am on my bike.

I am not originally from Canada and just got my citizenship a couple of years back. I just want to transition peacefully and learn the rules so I won’t make a mistake again.

Am I missing something here? Should I just take off my bike and walk on the side walk if I am on downtown? Please help. Thank you nice people of Comox Valley :)

Trails or parks where I can fill a water bottle

I’m looking for a spot to hike or explore nature that has a tap to refill a water bottle. Had some recent health scares because of not drinking enough water and wanting to be able to exercise and get in better shape out in nature. Still only able to do moderate level activity so hopefully somewhere pretty easy to get to or maybe hang out around a fire pit. Maybe a disc golf course with a tap?

Personal trainers... anyone?

I know there are gyms and community centres where there are personal trainers that you can pay. I was more looking to see if there were any independent trainer that might work out of their homes?

I had a guy in Vancouver that had a small gym in his garage and would do personal trainer. I'm just looking to get some help with weight loss and strength training.

Since when is the marina locked off?

Used to love walking around the dock and looking at the big boats but now it's closed off behind a locked gate. Any idea when that changed?

995 ballots to be counted this weekend

Fromthe globe and mail (probably paywalled):

“These votes will be consequential in tight ridings; in Surrey-Guildford, for example, the Conservative candidate is ahead by just 103 votes, and in Courtenay-Comox, 234. The breakdown shows that there are 634 and 995 ballots to be counted this weekend in those ridings, respectively.Historically, late-counted votes have almost always favoured the NDP. Chad Skelton, a data journalist and journalism instructor at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, notes that the NDP has done better in late-counted ballots in every election going back to 2005, while the BC Liberals – the province’s main centre-right party until this year – have done worse.” “The counting of mail-in ballots begins on Saturday, starting with the closest districts, and will continue through Sunday…. and a final count for absentee ballots will take place Monday... an automatic recount is required any time the difference between the top two candidates is 100 votes or fewer. ”

So there’s still a chance RR could still win…. Still have that Arzeena split vote factor though….. but after all the mail in and absentee ballots, if it’s fewer than 100 votes, our riding might need another recount maybe?

So…why is it called a valley?

Forgive my ignorance, but why is comox valley called a valley? Is it not just mountain, fairly flat land and then ocean?

Weird couple at Browns tonight live-streaming dinner.

Seemed weird a couple live-streamed their entire dinner while chatting. Everyone was pretty annoyed around them as they walked out still streaming. Couldn’t see what platform it was. Like I said, weird

Seeking Government of Canada Internal Employment Opportunity

I currently reside in Courtenay and am an indeterminate AS-02 employee with the public service. Seeking a new opportunity in the valley, or within a reasonable commuting distance (e.g., Campbell River, Nanaimo).

If there happens to be any hiring managers on this forum, please reach out as I’d love to chat and send you my resume. Open to suggestions from anyone on connections internally as well I could try reaching out to. My current manager supports me for immediate movement.

I have been watching the internal job site closely but not seeing any recent postings relevant. I’m open to opportunities below my substantive level as well (e.g., CR-04). Thought I’d try a post here as you never know :)

Can you drive up Mount Washington with M/S tires?

My car had M/S tires but not 3PMS tires. Would it be safe to drive up there or should I find another way? I’m wanting to go to the little town area below the actual ski resort.

Cheapest phone plan

Do you guys have any suggestions which is the best cheapest plan in the valley? I am currently using Freedom Mobile with unlimited talk and text with 10GB for $65, round up to $72 with taxes.

Are there any cheaper plan than this? Thanks in advance.

Xeriscape my front lawn

I am looking to the hive mind for help in finding a company or individual to convert my front yard from grass to ? as well as a gardener/yard person on an ongoing basis.

I'm not interested in simply dumping a bunch of rocks and a couple of yards of mulch, nor am I needing or wanting 8 foot basalt obelisk towers imported from Alberta, architecturally installed, something in the middle.

We also are looking for a gardener. No mow, blow and go involved. Planting, pruning, care of existing beds, advice on what to plant where. I'm thinking someone with knowledge in this area is worth at least $35/hr. Key being knowledge. We are sadly giving all that up due to mostly age but also some medical issues.
