Super Bowl LIX

Let me know if this post isn’t appropriate for the sub and I will post elsewhere

Super Bowl is in a couple weeks, I’m not originally from Canada and I know that Hockey reigns here..

Does anyone know of any good sports bars or events taking place?

I’m a diehard Eagles fan 🦅 and I’ll probably be hosting a SB BBQ, but I was curious if there’s any spots good for watching or events. Thanks!

GO BIRDS!!!🦅 🦅 🦅

Explosion around 4 pm Jan 28?

Anyone know the cause of the loud boom heard in Courtenay, and as far away as Black Creek, Powell River, and Hornby Island? I have heard one unsubstantiated report that it may be blasting related to a dam in the Campbell River area?

Cumberland

I would eventually love to relocate to Cumberland, but as I’ve found with Victoria, heritage and character are discarded regularly. How is Cumberland with heritage and historic buildings? Are they protected? Or have developers just not found Cumberland yet?

Community activity

So Big Tech, oligarchy etc etc... hoping to move away from Meta but I rely on Facebook events and groups for keeping up to date with activity in the wider community. What good alternatives are being used locally?

Dry and Cold and Plants

This weather is hard on your shrubs and perennials, even younger trees. Not only is the ground moisture locked in so to speak but the 0 humidity is leeching moisture away, out of the plant.

When it warms up, if it doesn't start raining, I'm going to be sure and water everything well. Especially expensive or recently planted stuff.

Free water propagated plants 🌱🌱🌱

I saw a post offering up free jade starts the other day and thought that some people may be interested in some free water propagated plants.

Most of them are Tradescantia Zebrina, Heart leaf philodendron, and one has philodendron brasil, golden pothos, and tradescantia. Also I have one small philodendron (white wizard i think.) Most if not all of these plants would love to be potted up into soil asap.

Located in Union Bay.

CVRD Requesting your input on 4 new bylaws (Fire Hall, Artificial Turf, Supportive Housing, Homeless Services). Deadline Feb 18.

This is an FYI to all residents of the valley that the CVRD is going through a unified Alternative Approval Process (AAP) for these by laws as they have a significant impact on taxes and long term financial obligations of the municipality.

(The unified AAP brings together various initiatives during the same time period to gauge public opinion on bylaws requiring elector approval, including long-term borrowing, establishing new services, or significant changes to existing services.)

If you are against any of these you have to fill out the related form and email/mail/drop it off.

Cumberland trails for trikes?

We took our recumbent trikes around a bit of the Cumberland trails today staying on the access roads. There is lots more to explore now we have our heads around it a little bit just staying on the doubletrack but we met somebody on a handcycle going the other way. I didn't think to ask them what trails they use until it was too late . Does anyone have any idea how you could find out what trails would be OK for trikes? We rode out to the lake to eat some lunch too, beautiful day!

Hey everyone I have a child about to go into school and I just have some questions

It looks like our catchment is going to be Courtenay Elementary and I just wanted to hear from other parents what they think of the school? We were really hoping to get our child into a school up in comox but doesn't seem like requesting schools is a thing anymore.

Any info about courtenay elementary ir possibly getting a different catchment would be awesome thanks!

Tutoring Space? Orton-Gillingham Instructor

Thank you in advance for your help.
After taking a break from tutoring students, my wife would like to back into assisting children with reading problems/ dyslexia. She is a certified Orton-Gillingham instructor, and hopefully there is a demand in the Valley.
With that being said, previously she had just tutored out of our home, or that of the student she was assisting. Is anyone aware of space outside of homes and in the community that is convenient? I've contacted the Comox Rec Centre and they appear to be a good option, but availability seems inconsistent (looking at Monday and Wednesday afternoons).
Appreciated.

Winter wedding

My fiance and I are planning a wedding for the end of January next year, and just wondering if anyone knows of good winter venues for a smaller wedding (under 50 people). I'm thinking about restaurants so bonus if those are options.

Locked Out

Fishermans wharf now looks like a military special ops lock up ...all new security. What happened to friendly tie your dingy up. Apparently these were all taxpayer built facilities to SERVE the people of Canada for all types of watercraft. Then all of them on this coast seemingly weaseled out by the fed given to profitable enterprises and office admin salaries. Never found such hostility and anti citizen attitudes as experienced increasingly over the years at this place. Little empire mentality has destroyed a once cherished, conversational, welcoming place for boaters and towns folk out for a stroll and perhaps some friendly conversation dockside. The issue on theft of course is ever present in our society and can be dealt with. Giving up what has been so coastal Canadian as open public dockage is joke. Those of us over the years have always looked out for each other and we found no need to Americanize our culture with tall gates and locks and to boot pay for bureaucrats. Nobody is getting into boating these days except for commercial harvesters and wealthy folk. Taking back these facilities is a voter issue. We been robbed and private marina dockage on public leased land is extortion. The average Canadian family is denied what Canada has the most of ... lakes and oceans.

In-demand trades in the valley?

I’ve been a farm manager for 10 years and am thinking of switching into a trade, leaning towards electrician. I don’t see many trades jobs posted so I assume you have to know people or reach out to companies to find work. Which trades are/are going to be in high demand in the valley? Thanks team!!

Best plain/greek yogurt? The thicker and more sour, the better.

Anywhere in the valley to get really good plain yogurt? I'm specifically after sour thick yogurt like they have in Greece or other mediterranean countries. Everything I've tried from a few grocery stores doesn't quite do it (greek yogurt or otherwise).

Avalon Plain - good flavour, but could be more sour. Not thick. Nice that it's available in large tubs.

Astro Balkan Style - also decent good flavour, but not thick either. Usually pretty expensive.

Shepherd Gourmet Dairy Skyr Plain 0% - Super thick! Not bad flavour, but I want it more sour! Most expensive option so far.

A bunch of greek yogurts I've tried I didn't like the flavour of, so not mentioned here.

Comox Valley Pinball Club

Monday nights at Ace Brewing in Courtenay! Folks will be meeting to informally play pinball and socialize.

There will be more to be announced regarding scheduled events, pinball league, and tournaments.

Ace Brewing currently has 3 brand-new Stern pinball machines:

Godzilla

Jaws

Dr. No

These machines are very highly rated, excellent quality, and the gameplay is much deeper than you might think. If you aren't up to date on pinball tech, these machines are impressive. At the very least, it's a loonie to learn about a world you may have passed by. Try not to flip out.

Come by Monday nights to have a few games, get involved, and test your might! Games are coin-op, and $1 gets you 3 balls.

That's 33 cents a ball, cheapest action you can find nowadays. Tune in for more details.

Bagpiper?

I’m hoping someone will have a lead on a big piper in the Comox Valley. We will be having an entombment in a columbaria for my grandparents in Courtenay, next month. I’ve been on the mainland for the last decade, but the Valley is still home.

If someone could point me in the right direction, I would be really grateful.

Fun thing to do - $600 budget

Hi all, I am visiting for the second time my best friend who lives in the Comox Valley in early April. I had a blast visiting in October and appreciated everyone's suggestions of places to check out in the area.

In October, I treated my friend and I to a whale watching tour in Campbell River - it was awesome! I want to do another "adventure" type thing in April, with a budget of $300 (possibly more if worth it) per person. What would you do or suggest? TIA!

Edit to add: we are somewhat/moderately active/fit, we can typically do a 5-7k hike. I have intermittent chronic pain that sometimes limits my mobility but have this managed pretty well.
