Ever take this place for granted?

I don’t love living on the island, I often feel isolated, I miss the amenities and the culture of the mainland etc but yesterday I was driving to work and it was like something out of a music video.

The leaves are gorgeous shades of gold red and orange, reflected in the ocean, and as I’m driving on the highway I happen to see a fish jump in the almost still water in the bay out of my peripheral vision. A few minutes later an eagle flies over the highway carrying a stick for building a nest. Then the sun comes out and the sky is brilliant blue and a rainbow appears. I was like wow this is really beautiful!

Of course my inner trauma response was then on high alert thinking this is going to be like the movies where the main character finds inner peace and happy music plays and then they unexpectedly just die, but that’s just me 🤣 still alive! 🤟🏻

ISO dog to adopt

I’ve looked at SPCA and rescues but can’t find much out there right now.

I just recently moved to the island and am looking for a furry friend. I live on the beach with rivers and trails in my backyard, any dog would have a heyday here. Pls dm me if you need or know of someone who needs to re-home their pup

❗️Must be good with cats ❗️

Bamfield

Driving from Nanaimo to Bamfield through Port tomorrow and was wondering how that road is especially when it’s been raining? Also I’d love to check out Pachena Bay beach. Can we drive straight in the campsite there or is it a hike?

Weather & Time change

For those of you that have lived elsewhere in Canada and now live on the Island, how do you compare your experience with the time change during the fall months (fog/rain)? Do you dail up your outdoor recreation, go into cocoon mode or no difference compared to where you used to live in Canada? I lived in Ontario 20 years and now on Vancouver Island for 30 years. I was wondering if people found they changed their habits much during the time change/adjustment period compared to where they used to live in Canada.

Edited for clarity.

Environment Canada says an island in the Johnstone Strait is -38˚C right now. That seems like an error.

Summer jobs/internships that relate to biology/land stewardship?

Wondering if anyone has some good leads on entry-level positions in the biology field. I’m planning on going to post secondary for conservation biology/indigenous land stewardship but I want to spend a little more time seeing what the day to day of certain positions could entail, so in the future I can make better educated decisions regarding my career. I’ve always been passionate about science and the outdoors, I’m athletic and a keen learner. I’m also not against moving for a temporary position. I live in the mid-central region on Vancouver Island. Thanks in advance for any Leads!

Toddlers at Mt. Washington

I really wanna get my little into skiing this year but I'm a little confused trying to get info from Mt. Washington's website, so I have questions:

  • Seems they only do lessons for 4+ (mine will be 4 in the spring), except for the 'Tiny Tots' program but that's a weekly thing we won't be able to make work (live in Vic). How 'strict' are they on age? Seems most other resorts will take 3 year olds (even if only in private lessons).
  • If we just hang out near the carpets/beginner area does they need a ticket? (doesn't look like it) Do I need a ticket?
  • Any top tips from parents who've started their littles at a similar age? Anything we should avoid doing? Prep before hand? I have boots/skis/snowsuit/helmet for them, but are harnesses or tip connectors a thing/good idea? Any reviews on the daycare facility (do they do ins/outs if I can't get lessons and want to get them on the snow for a bit but also want to ski myself too)? Grateful for any advice!

Lost Board and wing

Hey everyone I lost my red and white formula windsurf board and an orange and black 6m wing off of Willow Point in Campbell River. Last I saw the wing it was heading south east and I spoke to someone south of town that said the wing was still traveling southeast around 1:00pm.

The coast guard is aware that they are out there. If you happen to find either one please let me know.

Question for those in the pipe trades and or 324 UA

So I want to live in Courtney and apply to the union once I'm done my foundations course.

Question 1; does local 324 serve the whole island (for example can you be a member while living and working in Courtney) or, must you stay local to Vic.

2; Does anyone know if they have a preference for what school you take your foundations course at or if either is better between Camosun or NIC?

Any other information would be greatly appreciated. Right now I'm trying to figure out if it would be necessary for me to move to Victoria.

Does anyone else love this wet weather during the fall?

I am seeing so many posts about the “dreary” weather but I personally love it. I love the rain during autumn and id much prefer it to the sun. Is it just me, I was born and raised here if that makes a difference!

Really defeated by the cost of housing…

I’m sure I’m not the only one, but I’ve gotten serious about buying lately. Well, guess I should have gotten serious 5 years ago because everything that was 300k back then is 600+ now for some reason. I’ve been priced out of the market. Even combining my income with another person won’t get me much… and I make 88k gross a year!

How are regular people supposed to afford to live here? So much of Canadian financial society is built around being a homeowner but a huge chunk of us are being left behind.

I’m located in the Victoria area, but as far as I’m aware, this is now an issue anywhere within a 5 hour drive of here. The lower mainland and the interior are also off the table for me, and any random small town up north may be affordable but doesn’t have any work. I don’t even want a house, I’ll take a condo, but everything in my budget has ridiculous strata fees, are small and cramped, are located on noisy 6-lane roads, built in 1977.

It really does feel like the previous generations of Canadians intentionally fucked over mine.

I’m so defeated. I’m paying so much in rent and I don’t want to play this dumb game anymore.

Best fishing lodges on the island - recommendations?

My husband turns 40 this year, and I'm looking to surprise him with special fishing trip. Wondering if anyone on this sub has all-inclusive lodges they'd recommend for a guided, 3-4 night stay. Willing to spend in or around 5k per person, and open to any location on the island.

Looking to target salmon and halibut, but a lodge that offers freshwater guiding too would be a bonus. Time of year would likely be August.

I'd definitely classify ourselves as low-key, and not necessarily looking for a luxury experience. A place that's more authentic, locally/Indigenous-run and down-to-earth would definitely be more our vibe. Extra points if it's not massive guest capacity.

Thanks!
