Trip to east coast of Vancouver island.

We are a family of five visiting in May and would love your advice. We have three children aged nearly 2, 4 and 6. We are coming to explore work opportunities but also to have a holiday at the same time. My wife has already scheduled interviews so this is not a concern.

We will be spending time in the Cowichan Valley, Nanaimo and the Comox Valley.

We are considering hiring an RV vs airbnbs. What are your thoughts? I think RV would be convenient as anything the kids need will be to hand including midday sleep for youngest, food, change of clothes etc. Will it be difficult to move around to check out the local areas? Would a smaller vehicle be better for this?

Any recommendations for things to do and places to see would be awesome. It's my wife's birthday while we're visiting, we'll be in the Cowichan area at the time so any stand out wonders there would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

EV Chargers?

We’re from Langford and I’m planning a trip to Tofino on May. Are there EV chargers in Tofino?

There’s one Supercharger in between the journey but I just want to be sure.

Thanks.

Funding for Adaptive Devices and physiotherapy?

Southern Vancouver Island- I've been on PWD benefits since 2010 and recently had two surgeries that left me with the complete loss of use of one hand and severe pain in my arm. I'm currently unable to care for myself at home and am living with and rely on others for assistance with daily tasks.

I need several months of physiotherapy, potential splinting, and adaptive devices/appliances for independent living, (especially in the kitchen) to go home. These devices will cost hundreds of dollars out-of-pocket.

I’ve already reached out to the Disability Resource Centre, but I’ve been told MSDPR doesn't provide funding for "aids." Since I can’t work ATM, I'm struggling to afford these necessary items. Does anyone know of private/municipal/provincial/federal grants or funding programs to help with cost of physiotherapy or assistive devices? I’d be very grateful for your advice!

Best clothing thrift stores?

Basically the title. Looking for good quality second hand clothes for adults. Preferably between Qualicum and Ladysmith, but will travel further for a really good one.

Explosion/Earthquake?

Curious about who felt it/where they are - it looks like in the Comox group people felt an explosion anywhere from Royston through Black Creek. Anyone farther feel the rumble?

July Trip - Tofino (2-3 nights)?

My husband, two kids (9 months, 6 years), MIL & FIL and I are going to visit BC for two weeks in mid-July. We plan on renting a car and splitting our time between Vancouver, Victoria and possibly Tofino. We love nature and being outdoors, but hiking will be limited due to young kids/ seniors. I am wondering if you have any advice on visiting Tofino (2-3 nights) -

(1) Fly into Vancouver, rent a car at airport and spend several days

(2a) Take car > ferry to Nanaimo and then drive to Tofino (I understand this might be a long drive; is it feasible with an infant and toddler?), OR

(2b) Fly from Vancouver to Tofino and rent a car. It seems like there are no car rentals available (I’ve only checked Budget), or most vehicles do not have capacity for 6 people, plus luggage.

(3) Drive from Tofino to Victoria and spend several nights, and then return car to airport

I would love to spend several nights in Tofino but I’m struggling on whether it makes sense logistically.

Thanks so much in advance!

Hotels with smart TVs

This may be an odd request, but does anyone know of any hotels on Vancouver Island with smart TVs? (That can stream Netflix, crave, paramount + etc.)

I know it'll be frowned upon to go away for the weekend and sit and watch tv, but my spouse and I live in a small apartment with his mom and have been thinking about going away for the weekend, do some stuff during the day and just spend the evenings together at the hotel and catch up on all our fav shows ❤️ nice relaxing weekend 😅

Please let me know of any!!

Mount Rainier?

Taken the other day from Mount Tzouhalem. You could just make out the outline and from what I could triangulate on Google Maps it looked to be what I was facing towards.

Vancouver Island home base ideas while traveling with toddlers

My husband (39m), two boys (18 months, 4 years) and I (39f) are going to Vancouver Island for two weeks in early May. Ideally, we'd like to split up accommodations to two to three home base locations so we can explore more of the island since it is our first time visiting. We'll be renting a car and bringing a hiking pack for the youngest. We love nature and being outdoors, but with the four year old's little legs, our hikes will probably be limited to easier/shorter ones.

I'm wondering if you have any advice on:

  1. Three home base locations (right now we are thinking that Victoria will be one of them, since we'll be flying into YYJ)

  2. Any recs for things to see or do with our little ones (toddler activities, beautiful nature, views, easier hikes, tasty cafes or bakeries, chill restaurants)

Thanks so much and happy travels!

P.S. After years of lurking, this is my first time posting to Reddit so bear with me if I screwed this up somehow ;-)

Douglas fir removal

I have a Douglas fir that is too close to my house and the roots are causing my patio to lift and crack. It is maybe 50-60' high. I've got a quote from an arborist to limb it, mulch the limbs and haul the mulch away, cut the trunk into firewood size logs and leave them (I don't have a wood fireplace so I want that gone too), and leave me a stump. Is there any cheaper way to get rid of this tree. Would anyone/company pay for any of the wood if it was left full size?

Does Ash Main FSR stay open in June?

Trying to plan a try that involves some car camping on the way to Tofino. Ash main FSR looks like a good option. Is there a gate there in the summer (end of June)?

Camping advice

Hello all! I am currently planning a road trip to Vancouver island and then down through the Oregon coast and planning to stay in my car.

Is there any thing similar to crown land camping on the island, or does anyone have some advice or recommendations for cheaper campsites to stay at? I want to be able to go to the Tofino area for possibly a couple of days so possibly places that are generally a close drive to get there would be fantastic! Just trying to look at my options as a lot of the campsites and places to stay that I have found are super pricey.

If anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated!

EDIT:

For more context I’m not too particular about it specifically being Tofino we might just do a day out there. Id be open to staying in other places as I know it will likely be super busy in the summer.

We have accommodation for a day or so on Thetis island but I would really love to make it further west to the coast so looking for some places to go! I wouldn’t mind going up further north just not sure if we will have time, (thinking about 5 days on the island) I might be able to stay longer, but I wanted to make sure we were able to make it to Oregon as well.

I would love to be able to do some easy to moderate hiking and hopefully be able to find some waterfalls and places to go swimming, and explore some of the beaches. I love adventuring and being outdoors. Some ppl have said Sombrio beach is nice so maybe planning on registering online and staying a night there? Im not too picky about food because we are planning to do a lot of the cooking to cut some costs. If that gives any more ideas. Im open to anything! Just trying to sort out where to stay while being on the island!

Travel to Namu

Hi all, I've been researching how to get to Namu and coming up short. It looks like like it'd be great for photography and is an amazing area historically. Google Maps shows a ferry stopping there, but I haven't found any actual sailings that make a stop there. I don't think BC Ferries stops there anymore en route to Bella Coola, nor the Queen of Chilliwack (although it looks like they did historically?). I've also looked at the west coast ferry forum but all posts for Namu are from 2011 or before. Is this a situation where I need to charter a private sailing? Or is there a road in from a nearby port?

Can anyone offer some advice, or point me to a more appropriate sub?

Edit: Thanks for the guidance! I'm well aware it's derelict - I'm not going for the nature photography. Will try a few of the avenues suggested!

Maple Tree Removal

I have a 50-60ft maple Tree, or so I think approximately 60m away from the house, kinda in the open with small trees around it so no risk of damage. I live out in a rural area. What is the cost to remove such a tree? Would anyone do it in return for all the wood? Obviously the best time is before spring. Maybe i take care of the small branches that nobody wants. Just looking for advice.

**Correction, not that broccoli type maple tree. It's 60ft center with branches out about 6ft in an upward manner but consistent from top to bottom in size. Diameter is maybe 2ft. Looses leaves in winter. Tried to post a photo but won't let me

What cool places can you recommend between Langford and Nanaimo for my birthday?

Planning on doing a dinner type thing on my bday, interested in what this amazing island has to offer me :-)

Things that I like: cats, animals, waterfalls, rivers, unique food (ethnic cuisine or trendy things), gimmicky attractions etc., butterflies, gardens, bougie hippie/hipster shit

Of course the suggested attractions/ restaurants don’t have to have all of those features but just to give an idea of what I might enjoy :-) thanks in advance yall 🫶🏻

Owls

I'm a photographer living in the Victoria area. I'm trying to locate some larger birds to photograph - mostly owls but raptors are also of interest.

Does anyone know of any publicly accessible locations where I might expect to find owls. Panama flats has been good for a variety of ducks, turkey vultures, eagles, osprey and a few other birds but I've been stumped in the owl department.

Thanks in advance and if you feel more comfortable answering in DM so as not to publicly announce areas that you know of which you would prefer not get flooded by people with cameras then that's cool too. I try to always be respectful of private property and be considerate of all animal habitats

moving for the season for a job!

hey everyone! I’m moving to Tofino on staff acom in two months - what do I need to know/be aware of, be respectful of, and what do you think are necessities I should bring? I’m so excited, and putting together a list of things to buy and pack and things to buy there, as well as trying to research to get a rough estimate of a grocery budget.

thanks everyone!
