We are rapidly being priced out of our home because of the insane property taxes. This year in particular we had an escrow shortage of 1200. What is odd is that our assessed value didn't really increase by that much. Went from 340k > 370k. Roughly an 9% increase. But our tax bill went from 3200>4200. Roughly a 31% increase.... How does this happen? Anyone else having the same experience?
Edit: See this comment by u/make_fast_ for the actual answer which I verified by talking to the appraiser's office. Doesn't make the situation any easier, but at least it makes logical sense.
Does the water here cause anyone else's skin to get incredibly dry?
Sitting on both sides of the Loop around Chase street exits.
Anyone have an extra ticket or two to the GGT at Winterville auditorium tn?
Breaking news from the scene: DA Yalamanchili was just sworn in as Western Circuit DA. Packed courtroom, good mix of prosecutors, judges, and the defense bar.
My roommate and I have been thinking about going to a coffee shop on weekend evenings so I can work on my writing and he can do art outside of the apartment.
We’re looking for somewhere that’s open pretty late and serves savory foods, not just sweet bakery items. We’ve been to Jittery Joe’s and Hendershot’s but would like some other options.
I don't know if anyone is following the news on the massive drone sightings over US cities at the moment but as of recently they've also been spotted over Atlanta, Georgia. I'm very very curious if this is isolated to major metropolitan areas but don't have the constant sky space to monitor Athens.
The drones in question are definitely lit up. Some all red, some white red and green lights. They're for the most part very visible. The size and brightness are a definite give away for these unmanned vehicles.
I'm putting all theories aside here, and just looking for it at face-value.
Edit: Don't call anybody, just document if you can. I'm simply looking for stationary drone locations in Athens, that's it. Yes, they're legal to fly. 10+ states are having weird sightings, just trying to see if it's around/in our area. Ty for the actual responses ahead of time.
I need to make some money but due to lack of childcare I can only work on the weekends. Is there anywhere that would hire me that anyone knows of?
I don't frequently attend events at large arenas, so maybe I'm just not used to the extra fees that they tack on. But is it normal for them to add on an additional $35 in fees for two $30 tickets? I considered buying tickets for a few different events but the fees increase the price so much! Am I just naive or is this kind of insane?
Events I considered include The Nutcracker, Rock Lobster games, and Frozen and Encanto on Ice.
Anybody else's at&t cell service completely down? Mine keeps bouncing to t-mobile towers but not with enough strength to actually make a phone call

Hi! I’m looking for someone who does fine line and tiny tattoos in Athens that is also willing to tattoo on the inner ear. TIA!
Where is the best place in town for shirts and stuff that has Athens memorabilia on it. Not UGA but Athens centric. Thanks
Edit: Thank you for all these suggestions this will help.
I'm a homeless mom who left my abusive baby daddy and ever since I broke up with him I've become homeless I've recieved so much unsolicited advice from strangers and one person threatened to call the cops on me cause I'm homeless and another person actually called CPS on me cause they thought we were sleeping outside when we aren't.
Now I've had multiple COMPLETE strangers stalking me. Some of them make it really obvious that they are stalking me and some of them are subtle but they don't realize I can see them. I'm really tired of it. I'm tired of being treated like a criminal just because I thought I did the right thing by leaving an abusive man who made sure I would have nothing if I leave.
I even recently had a woman who was a complete stranger who was clearly under the influence of drugs or alcohol try to "approach me" when she tried grabbing my son's stroller while I was still pushing the stroller. She didn't even say what she was about to do she just randomly reached out to us without saying anything and she tried to stop the stroller and didn't explain herself until I moved me and my son out of the way and told her "Don't touch my kid!" (I have a separate post about that)
My social anxiety has gotten worse since I've become homeless because I am tired of Karens not minding their own business and accusing me of being a horrible mom when I go out in public.
They either yell at me when my baby is loud or they don't respect boundaries or they falsely accuse me of neglect. I also have some people accuse me of being a teen mom or young mom because I don't look my age. I'm 29 but a lot of people tell me that they thought I was either a teenager or a person in their early 20's.
I've never been on drugs. I don't drink alcohol. And I don't hit/spank my child.
I'm at a point where I'm either constantly worried about people calling CPS because of a false assumption or worried about someone trying to steal my child after that drunk lady tried to grab my kid.
Went to the B-52s concert last night and wanted to share some thoughts on the Arena and our overall experience.
First, there are no bad seats in the house. We were about as far away from the stage as you can get (rear corner) and were perfectly happy with your seats. If you're ever getting tickets for an event and want to save money by getting the "cheap" seats, go for it!
State Farm Arena in Atlanta is fairly cavernous. Gas South Arena in Duluth feels more intimate than that. And our arena is even more intimate!
For hockey games, I bet all the seats feel pretty close to the ice with nice sight lines.
Fun to think that the fancy big-dollar Suites up top are the farthest from the action/entertainment!
The seats themselves were very comfortable, and all have convenient cup holders. They are "raked" nicely, so you can see over the person in front of you without staring at the back of their head or looking between folks. I'm 6'2" and was glad to be on the aisle to extend my legs occasionally. That was our only issue with seating; a little tight on leg space for tall folks.
Our seats had great proximity to concessions, bathrooms and the exits. Super convenient. One thing not convenient: the men's bathroom near us was tiny and had three urinals and two stalls. It was very small and quite the traffic jam. The adjoining ladies room had about ten stalls, according to my wife who was waiting for me since she breezed right outta there.
Only comment on concessions was that you can get fountain drinks or bottled drinks. I vastly prefer fountain Coke and was happy to have that option. Even if it was five bucks... Didn't try any other food but it looked like a lot of people defaulted to the pretzels. The popcorn smelled good...
Overall, the arena felt fairly utilitarian and basic, but not in a bad way. White walls. Concrete floors. Just not a ton of personality. Maybe as more of the murals and stuff inside gets finished it will have more pizazz. Not that it needs to be fancy or anything.
Getting into the arena was interesting. We walked around the Classic Center Parking Deck side and were waiting at a bank of three elevators to go down to the Arena entry level. They never arrived. This felt like a bottleneck and the elevators were very slow. Many folks were randomly looking for stairs and found some, and many of us went that way. (Those poor souls might still be waiting for the elevator this morning)
I was surprised there weren't many staff at all areas around the Classic Center trying to herd folks and help them find their way into the arena. Or at least better signage. But we all figured it out. Just give yourself a little extra time on your first visit.
The staff we did engage with at security, ticketing, concessions, etc were super friendly and eagerly trying to help folks get where they wanted to be.
Leaving was a breeze. Can't speak to parking at the Arena because we are parked over near The National and enjoyed the walk back to our car instead of waiting in a parking garage.
Bonus: while dining at the bar at The National, we were near Fred Schneider who was enjoying his pre-show meal! Nice way to kick off the evening and felt like a very "Athens" moment. He was wearing a "Weekly World News" ball cap which was perfectly in character for him.
Hope any of this is helpful as you plan a visit to future events. We enjoyed our experience at the new arena, and are excited about the many concerts and events to come, along with their positive impact on the local economy.
The new arena is quite nice and the team is pretty good too.
What are some good restaurants with outdoor seating and heaters?
Any cool shows next weekend? Rock shows any genre.
Yet another wreck at the Oconee connector just past the Starbucks. Big truck involved. Traffic is backed up all the way down to Kohls.
Tonight in Athens GA, where it all began!
Looking for painters that painting for apartments. I have a rental house that I usually do the painting but need to get this one done quickly. Just need them to spray one color on the walls. Thanks!
