Rules:
Flairs Required - Every post has to have a correct flair. Report posts with incorrect flairs and we’ll fix the flair. Correct flair helps with searching/sorting/only seeing the kinds of posts you are interested in.
Use the Megathreads - We have megathreads for Self-promotion/Reccomendations, Invite requests, and sometimes other special topics or events. Please keep these topics to their respective megathreads. We won't be allowing individual posts on these topics.
Personally Identifying Information - Please do not include personally identifying information (usernames, titles, photos of a person's face, etc) in your posts or comments outside of a work finding request or recommendation.
Don't search for works from here - Please do not try to find works mentioned in the subreddit (outside of work search posts of course) using the limited details in the posts. This is a form of brigading and keeps causing harassment issues and/or mass reporting problems. If someone breaks this rule by commenting on the work on AO3, please report it via modmail, not by reporting the post that lead to it with the report system. (We won't ask how you found out about said comment) Obviously doesn't apply to promo/exchange threads.
Commercial Promotion/Solicitation Rule - It's generally not allowed but some kinds of discussions are. See this post for the actual details.
Fic/Work Search Rule - Please make your own post to look for a fic/work. Do not comment to ask people to help you find a fic/work on another person's post. It clutters things and makes it harder for everyone.
Spam Comment/Webnovel Posts Moratorium We are imposing a ban on making posts sharing that you got one of the webnovel spam comments. We are not banning posts asking about them though. This is just a ban on the posts where the OP clearly knows about the issue already and is just posting that they got one.
Moratorium on AI posts/comments - Only posts about actual updates related to AI (either affecting AO3 or things like copyright law) and posts about novel subjects that we haven't seen in the subreddit before will be allowed for the time being. Please search the subreddit before posting anything related to AI.
Have you checked the pinned posts? - If you can't make a post, check the pinned posts before sending us modmail. We aren't going to enforce this 'rule', it's just informational to help direct people to the likely relevant information without having to go through modmail and wait for one of us to respond.
Don't fake report things that should be modmail - Don't report something to make a suggestion or a complaint about the sub on a sub-wide scale. Don't report something to ask us to change things. The correct thing to do in those situations is to send us modmail. If you don't know how to do that, please check this mod post for instructions.
Research Studies are allowed - Research Studies are allowed to be posted here and you do not need to ask prior to posting. All posts are subject to normal sub rules. Please use the 'Research Studies' flair for all studies and/or results. Studies must be related to something fandom, literature, or sexuality/gender, etc. in some way. If you have questions, feel free to send modmail.
Moderator Discretion - We are very open to what kinds of things can be posted here but we leave most things up to moderator discretion. The mod team discusses most changes and moderating decisions and ultimately everything is on a case-by-case basis. There are too many edge-cases to account for every situation. If something becomes a continual issue we will make a written rule about it.

I recently got that as a part of a comment in one of my ficlets. I've only seen/used this particular phrasing ironically, in a meme kind of way but I could tell this reader had used it sincerely.
I realized they probably said crumbs because people usually say "thank you for the food" or something similar on fics they enjoy but this was a little ficlet, so not exactly "food" 😂
I'm not built for writing 50k feasts but I CAN give you little 500-word treats to nibble on and I'm glad this reader enjoyed it <3
(and yes, I realize 50k may not look like a big number but it is huge for me to even read and absolutely unthinkable to write. Massive respect to writers who put out that much.)
Pretty much the title. I'm writing a fic at the moment, and MC's dad feeds the family dog human meat. I tried a few Google searches, but I'm not so keen on having different variations of "Can you feed a dog human meat" in my search history, lol.
While on the topic, though, he also feeds MC human meat, I'm fairly sure that it is illegal, but unsure about the dog.
(Please correct me if I'm not using the correct flair.)

Hello!! Usually when I write I write a chapter at a time, posting once I finished the next chapter. I got really into an idea and finished my fic after 2 weeks of writing. It’s close to 15 chapters long.
I was wondering- should I just post it all at once or space it out? Like a chapter a day? Im not sure the pros and cons to either, if there are any at all.
Context: Recieved this comment on my long fic (182k words), which I finished posting more than a month ago and unexpectedly I recieve soem of the best comments on it. Like .. I thought it's done .. gone ... Forgotten amongst the thousands of fics in the fandom and nobody would be able to land on it now .. but today I saw this comment which made me rejoice ❤️ Awww... People are reading it😍 and most importantly, loving it!!
Just had to share this with someone!!
Within the last year, I read a fanfic based on the events of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. I’ve been trying to find said fanfic, but I’ve been unsuccessful thus far.
It fleshes out some of the events that occur during the story, while also introducing 2 new characters by the cover names Ghost and Spirit.
The fic is rather lengthy, with a healthy amount of chapters if I remember correctly. Fairly sure it’s a Link/Zelda relationship tag.
At this point, I don’t know if the fic got taken down or maybe I’m just not looking in the right spot. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
SPOILERS PAST HERE
Ghost and Spirit are revealed to be Link and Zelda of the canon BOTW timeline, who came back in time to find where the 4 new champions disappeared to. Ghost and Spirit were basically adopted by Teba, even being made bird masks by his wife that many people find unnerving. They wield shiekah weapons, Ghost using a sword and Spirit wielding an axe. They try to keep a low profile, with only Purah and the new champions knowing of their presence in the past (Age of Calamity timeline). Eventually, the rest of the champions discover their real identity.
ruined for me, not for anyone else whose positive or neutral to parent issues kink. so many fics that happened to me sigh 🥹

GOLLY!
I'm literally typing this bc this JUST happened to me. I cannot stand it when ppl don't tag something that happens in the fic, especially as it pertains to kinks.
I have all of my "exclude" tags down to a SCIENCE, everytime I search for something I have 20 tags with all of their variations locked and loaded so I don't see certain things I'm not into.
I was just scrolling through a ship I really like, saw a fic I'd maybe be into, kink I do not like ISN'T tagged but as I click in it's literally listed in the beginning authors note.
Like, maybe I'm just petty or maybe they could have forgot, but also it just frustrates me sometimes. Especially when all other kinks/situations were tagged.
There's a lot of discourse on this sub that revolves around commenting. From what I've seen, people generally don't comment for two reasons: (1) they're afraid of getting a negative response from the author, or (2) they don't know what to say or how to word a comment.
In response, authors tend to reassure readers that any kind of comment is welcome. Even if it's just a "I loved it." And they're right! Sure, a kudos says that someone liked your fic, but there's something that hits different about a comment. Even a short one.
But comments that provide some meaningful, specific compliment? That's holy grail of comments.
Personally, a comment that contains some kind of specific compliment are the comments that I keep in my email inbox and continually open again and again throughout the workday fawning over and blushing at. They're the comments that I reread constantly, whenever I need a little pick me up, whenever I'm lacking in writing inspiration, whenever I'm feeling like "why do I even bother writing at all?" They're the comments that stick with me and make me feel like I did something special.
But I know that these kinds of comments can be intimidating to write and that, if one is not used to leaving this type of comment, that one might be wondering what that comment looks like and what it might even mean?
So,
A Quick Guide to Writing Complimentary Comments
Step 1: Thank the author for writing (can be at the beginning or end)
Step 2: Say 2 - 3 specific things that you liked about the fic.
BONUS! Step 3: 1 - 2 specific reactions that you had when reading.
What "specific" things might you have liked?
What does this look like in practice?
Example 1:
Thank you so much for writing this! I absolutely loved this fic. John's relationship with Eve was so cute! I particularly liked when he brought her flowers when she got sick. To say nothing of how John tripping on the sidewalk made me both cringe and laugh at the same time. (So like him!) Thanks again!
Example 2:
Oh man, this was a great fic! I adore AU's, and you did an absolutely amazing job turning this into a science fiction! Giving Brently her own ship and having her be captain was so neat! I loved seeing her taking leadership like that, even while you kept her naturally quiet and somewhat shy characteristics that define her. Thank you so much for writing and sharing this!
Example 3:
This was absolutely amazing! I am such a fan of [genre] fics. Harvey seeing Dave through the window of the laundry mat but not stopping or saying anything? Walking away and just... looking at his phone at the old photos of them together?! I had to get up and walk away from my computer. But then finally got together and Dave kisses him?! OMG. Absolute love! Thank you for writing such an amazing fic.

I've been thinking about Podficing recently but idk how to get started so if you have any tips can you share them? Does it make an income at all? Does anyone have any fix recs to podfic for MHA, HH, or HB?
Hey all! Currently working on 2 fics as a full-time college student + employment. My time to write is limited and I'm finding it hard to find a groove and make the most of it. Do yall have warmup exercises that help get the creative juices flowing? I know part of the first draft is just sitting down to do it and all that jazz, but is there anything you guys do to help start the actual flow of ideas before you start drafting. Thanks in advance!
I was going to ask what fanfic was your fav, but I think people need this one more, so…
What was the fanfic that was an absolute 11/10 but was never finished?
Hello, I’m on chapter 22 of one of my fanfic and this chapter is smutty but it’s starting to get kinda lengthy it’s porn with plot and it carries with quite a bit of emotions. Is it ok for it to be a little longer? Like 11k-12k works?
Y'all pls recommend me some fics that give off very angsty vibes that leave you miserable and longing for a week after reading, but also breath taken because of how beautiful the romance and intimacy was written, kinda like how it feels when you finish watching Banana Fish. I'd love mlm fics with characters I'm familar with (klance, mikayuu, stsg, kurokenma, ivantill) idc if they're ooc like FTS(bkdk) I just wanna read something that would demolish me 😔
Heres mine
So, I’m thinking of writing a fic where one of the characters who didn’t die in canon is already dead at the start of the fic. I don’t have to tag that as major character death, right? Of course, I would put in the other tags that this is an alternate universe where that specific character is dead, and the fact that they’d died would also be obvious from the beginning of the story, so no one would be surprised mid story. Would this method of tagging be appropriate?
I’m a new author and have a few etiquette questions
I really want to do a little shout out to the people who have been following my fic as it’s updating, it means a lot to me to see people interested in my writing, but I don’t want to put anyone on the spot, It would just be a quick shoutout and I won’t mention specific usernames or anything, is that normal to do/acceptable?
I’ve been working out some plot points further down the line for my fic and realized I might want to kill off a couple characters I wasn’t going to originally, but I don’t have the major character death archive warning, if I do decide to kill off the characters how would I go about adding the warning? When I add the chapters where the characters die, or just as soon as I finalize the plot point?
This isn’t really an etiquette question, but how do you guys make your summaries sound interesting? Mine are kinda dry
Would it be bad of me to write a fic heavily inspired by another's? Because God, the plot was so good and has my mind excitedly going over so many ideas, but the writing itself was very surface level, and more fast paced than I tend to like. I want so badly to see a deeper dive behind the characters relationships and dynamics and the motives that are just never explained. But writing what I want to see would almost look like a rewrite in terms of the plot points I saw before I diverge into what I wanted to see.
So, overall question, would this be rude or disrespectful? I don't want to seem like I hated their work and just wanted to rewrite it "better" or something. Obviously if this is something that would be okay to do, they'd be credited as the inspiration and source.
I just ask because this feels different than an 'inspired by' fic. I'm inspired by it, yes, but I'd still be taking the same world, the same character relationships and then breaking them down heavily into the more familial intimate moments I wanted to see.
So I don't know how to feel about the scenes in this fic I'm writing. It goes like this. Act 1 -Set up and trauma scene -Trauma scene -Sex scene -Trauma scene -Trauma scene -Trauma scene -Cuddle scene
Act 2 -Cuddle scene -Sex scene -Therapy scene -Start of assassination missions I've been building up to scene -Cuddle scene -Cuddle scene -Trauma scene
Act 3 -Cuddle scene -Sex scene -Honestly still figuring out all of this acts scenes -Big finally scene -After story scene
So yeah it's super trauma heavy in the first act which provides the motivations for the characters actions, but man it's become a slog to even write
For example one early scene has the main character in a store reacting to different items while the reader and other characters are being clued in that things aren't okay with the mc. I actually don't know if this is one scene or three because it goes on for a while.
How does it sound so far? Sorry if I'm being vegue.
Pretty sure it was rated at least M.. Stiles keeps waking up in an unknown apartment, he leaves before seeing who it belongs to. Eventually he figure out he’s been having sex with Derek while asleep.
A relationship gets tagged, whether platonic or romantic, but it's a shortfic where the characters don't interact at all? The other characters in the relationship tag just get mentioned? Of course this just might be an entirely me-problem, which is fine lol. I dunno where else to complain where my 'struggle' might be understood
I don't mind shortfics! I love shortfics, but when it's a shortfic that has a relationship tagged but no interactions between the characters, and it has the character tags in it too despite only one actually appearing... it is a bit disappointing, especially when the other characters have like 50 works max they're included in.
Same goes for longfics too. What is the point of tagging characters and relationships if they are only mentioned and never appear, or if they never interact? This relationship tag has 8 works in it... and I would so love to fill it in myself but I only have two coherent ideas for it that I don't feel like writin' yet, lol.
Kay rant over! Not a big deal, really, just a bit annoying and disappointing
I happened to check my Ao3 stats for some of my fics and I happened to notice that I had gained 8 kudos, which is quite a lot considering I haven't uploaded that recently.
I looked at my fics and I noticed that the kudos came from the same 4 accounts kudoing two of my fics one after the other. What's weirder, however, is that all four accounts had also bookmarked the fics in the same order, and had bookmarked the same fics even before mine (in similar fandoms), with all four accounts having around the same number of total bookmarks as well (though not exactly the same).
Obviously, they're all registered accounts, though only one of them has a profile pic and none of them have any works or bios. One account is from 2015 while the other three are from varying months and dates in 2017.
Has anyone else experienced something like this?
My natural assumption is that they're just bots, but the accounts don't seem quite as sterile as I would expect from bot accounts. The only other alternatives I can think of, though, would be either a really dedicated reader group that reads the same fics, or someone who for some god-forsaken reason has three different alts, neither of which seems that probable either.
It's not big but my first!
i can always tell how close we are to the holiday season by how many kudos im getting on my christmas movie fic lol. really kickstarts the holiday cheer for me :)
(didn't know if it was appropriate to put the flair on this post that i did but better safe than sorry)
I'm asking this because I want to write a fanfic that has angst, but with a happy ending (somewhat) with a crossover pairing, but I forgot how to write angst now and I need help
