Rules

  1. Be nice- We know this is reddit, but this fandom hobby is hard enough, let's create a nice community.

  2. No harassment- No harassment, bullying, personal attacks, stalking, or doxxing. Such behavior is a banable offense

  3. Posting of Exchanges- Exchanges are free to organize by anyone at anytime. There is a template together with an explanation of what REs are, as a pinned post. If you don't use the template, the rules concerning requirements and deadlines have to be clear.

  4. Deletion of Posted Exchanges- If you post an exchange, please be aware that if anyone besides you signs up for the exchange prior to the deadline for entry that you are committed to managing it through completion. If you cannot fulfill this duty due to unforeseen circumstances, please contact the mods about a reassignment of management of the exchange. Deleting a posted RE without warning may result in action from the mod team.

  5. Management of Exchanges- For exchange hosts, if the deadline of an exchange has passed, send reminders to those who haven't done their reviews. If after 24 hours you receive no reply and the reviews aren't done, message the mods to let them know the status of the exchange.

  6. Exchange deadlines and obligations- Please complete your required reviews within the deadline. Being late in REs isn't a bannable offense. But you have to fulfill outstanding obligations before participating further. If the mods have communicated with you about clearing up obligations and you would like to participate in future exchanges, it behooves you to communicate with the mods regarding completion of your outstanding reviews.

  7. Feedback & Concrit- Please make your feedback on others' fics genuine and thoughtful. If comments you receive in exchanges are too low effort to be considered a review or if you suspect the user hasn't even read your fic, message the mods who will take further action. Concrit is always opt-in. Ie if a user doesn't specifically request concrit, don't offer it unsolicited.

  8. Contact the mods- Please contact the mods via modmail for any questions or concerns. If you are contacted by the mods about any issues, please do your best to reply if needed.

  9. Topics, flairs, and user flair- You can make posts on non-RE topics, hence the existence of flairs like "fic general," "venting," or "writing advice." Note that the use of flairs is mandatory. If the topic isn't at all fanfic-related, please post in discussion threads. For user flair, there is only one flair and it's editable, you can write whatever you want. But please don't be offensive in the flair.

  10. Respect the concept- Don't bash REs or any participants. When organizing REs, try to upvote the post and everyone's contribution. Don't get discouraged by lurker of spam bot downvotes. Focus on the lovely community and friendship.

  11. Safe space- All fandoms, ships, genres, and ratings welcome. Do not complain about any fictional content shared here. KINKTOMATO, ship and let ship, don't like:don't read, etc. Shaming anyone for what they choose to write is a banable offense. Go clutch pearls somewhere else

  12. Original works- Fanfiction writers who also have OG works on a ff platform like ao3 may submit their OG for REs. You may also choose to review OG in a profile RE. However, if most or all of your work is OG, you are a lost redditor

  13. Triggering and explicit content- See rule 11. We welcome creativity and do not tolerate censorship when it comes to fictional content created by our writers. However, please spoiler triggering content when quoting direct excerpts or adding warnings to entries. Explicit content can go in a NSFW post without spoilers.

  14. No individual self-promo posts- Self-promo is all we do on this sub via REs. You can also mention your fic as much as you want in activities, discussions, etc. But no individual self-promo posts requesting reviews without giving anything back to the community please.

Eyes On This Review Exchange šŸ‘€ šŸ‘€

Hey lovely sub peeps,

While the Fate and Luck festers are having fun over at their RE, I thought we'd have some fun of our own, for those who haven't signed up for the fest!

This RE is open to everyone. Fate and Luck participants can enter too, including with their fest fic. However no double dipping is allowed. Don't review someone's fest fic here to count it for the fest RE. Keep things separate

All riiiiight. And now for this RE:

Do you have anything you'd want eyes on? šŸ‘€ A new fic, fresh out of the oven? An old fic that needs more love? A recently posted chap? Look no further than this awesome RE

Post a link to a one-shot or a chapter of a long fic. If you sign up, you must review 3 chaps/one-shots from 3 different writers. Include information about fandom, summary, ship, rating, warnings, etc

As per sub rule 8, your review should be genuine and thoughtful. The writer should be able to tell that you read their story and what your thoughts are. Concrit is opt-in. Please consider leaving a kudo too if you enjoyed the story, you might make someone's day. And you might discover awesome new writers you vibe with if you read someone who is new to you

Deadline for signing up: Sunday, May 5th, 12 pm EST

Deadline for reviews: Wednesday, May 8th, 12 pm EST

Have fun!! šŸ‘€

Fate and Luck Fest Discussion Thread

The fest RE is now open! As we want to keep the RE thread uncluttered, I will open this discussion thread for fest-related discussions. All the yelling about the amazing fics goes here! Along with discussions, questions, and all-around fest gushing. And once more, I will remind everyone not to talk about dislikes and reasons for possibly opting out of reading a given fic. Thereā€™s absolutely no reason to mention any of it, as weā€™re being kind and considerate towards writers of all types of content. And hereā€™s another reminder: thereā€™s also a fests channel on our Discord server, so if youā€™re not there already, feel free to hop in to talk about the fest!

Fate and Luck Fest Review Exchange

The Fandom Diversity Fest ā€“ Fate and Luck is here! Note: this exchange is only open to those who have previously signed up for the fest and posted their fics in the fest collection on ao3. Anyone else please feel free to check out the fics as a reader.

Please read the rules carefully this time since the format will differ from usual REs

In our collection on ao3 you will find all the posted fics. 25 in total. However, they will be displayed in random order every time we access the collection. Hence, please also sign-up for this RE to make it easier for us to read all fics.

Post your fic link with the title and, this time optional, other information. It can be something very short like genre, rating, and an explanation about any warnings, if you want.

In this RE, each participant will read everyone else's entry. There will be an opt-out for a maximum of three fics in case of squicks, no justification needed as to why you opted out. That will bring the total number of fics each participant is required to read to 21ā€“24. Despite the opt-out possibility, please try to be supportive of everyone to the best of your abilities!

To make it more interesting, you can aim to refer to the theme and prompt in your comment. The last time around, I found it very interesting to reflect upon how differently each participant had approached the theme, and I predict this round will have an equally amazing array of different approaches to fate and luck.

Because we are reading everyone anyway, thereā€™s no need to reply to other people's comments this time. When you are done reading everything, or everything that you can, simply update your own comment. For example: Read 24/24. Done If you had to skip a fic due to a squick, no problem! Just write Read 21/24. Done. As said above, you do not need to motivate why. Also, please don't mention which fic(s) you didn't read.

One of the rules of the fest was that participation in the RE is compulsory. Those who are no-shows will have their works removed from the collection because they aren't participating all the way in the fest. Because of this, the RE has a sign-up period. One week to sign-up. Sign-ups close on May 7th, after which those who haven't shown up yet will have their fics removed. Let's hope everyone shows up though, to make this a big, interesting event.

Because of this no-show rule, we recommend reading fics of people who have already signed up first.

Other sub members who haven't submitted are welcome to participate and show their support! It would mean the world to us. And the fest participants are welcome to enter their fest fics in other REs during the fest, but please bear in mind not to ā€œdouble dipā€, meaning a fest participant reviewing another participantā€™s fest fic in a profile RE, for instance. A fest fic review should count only once, in this fest RE.

We have two months to review everyone's fics. The RE will close on June 30th. Because of the long deadline, I will send a reminder to everyone who hasnā€™t completed a couple of weeks prior to the date.

General discussions concerning the fest should go in this thread. We should try to keep the RE itself as clean as possible since it's long running with lots of participants.

As a final note, if youā€™re wondering, the deadline is slightly shorter and the number of oup-outs smaller than we discussed before, because the final number of finished fics was significantly smaller than the number of sign-ups.

And now, have fun!

āœØļø Word/Excerpt Game āœ’ļø

While waiting for the Fate and Luck collection to open, let's play a little excerpt game!

Comment a word, and reply to another post with an excerpt that contains that posts' word.

Only there is a twist!

Your word must start with the last letter of the word you commented on. For example:

šŸ…°ļø > car

šŸ…±ļø > "Loki was driving a car through downtown Chicago."

So your word needs to start with "r"

šŸ…±ļø > rain

There is no limit on how many words or excerpts you can share, just make sure to comment on other people's posts too :)

Your Characters Have To Fight

The last two stories that you updated or postedā€¦ All the main characters from one fight all the main characters in the otherā€¦

Who is fighting, and who wins? You can include OCs.

Is it a fight to the death or just a spar? Lighthearted or might bones break?

Also, please reply to others.

Reacting on others' showcased art isn't a requirement, but it's encouraged. Let's show each other some love, yeah?

Sunday Check-in and Upcoming Events

Hey there sub peeps,

It's Sunday evening here, and I'm on a āœØļøwriting vacationāœØļø. Initially it was just a vacation but I decided to not go anywhere and use it for writing. I love this decision. Best decision of my life!

How are things with you? Writing and/or experiencing anything exciting?

Also, the Fate and Luck Fest Reveal is approaching. Are you excited for the big unveiling and the RE? I sure am šŸ˜ˆ

There are also a few days left to sign up for the streaming event so you can showcase your awesome fandom to your fellow community members on discord. Or if you're only interested in watching streams, that can be exciting too

One Word Prompt Game

Hey there, folks!

Letā€™s get those creative juices flowing and play a round of the one-word prompt game!

For this game, everyone comments one word as a prompt and then writes or shares an excerpt from their own work as a response to someone else's word prompt. You can submit one or two prompts and respond to as many as you want. Try to make the excerpt between 3 and 10 sentences long. All genres are welcome, but please put NSFW and violent content in spoilers.

Donā€™t forget to comment on the excerpts of others, and most importantly, have fun! šŸ„°šŸ’žšŸ„³šŸŽ‰

Countdown to the Fate and Luck Fest

Friends, itā€™s almost time! The Fate and Luck Fest will begin in five days! Those of you who havenā€™t posted yet, you can do it here. The deadline for posting is Tuesday April 30th. The collection will be revealed around 10 AM EEST on May 1st. The same day, I will open the fest RE here on Reddit. Please remember that you will have to sign up for the RE to participate in the fest.

As the highlight of the fest is that everyone reads and comments on everyone elseā€™s story (with an opt-out for max. four stories in case of squicks), I wanted to remind you all of our rules and guidelines concerning dislikes. There will be a fest discussion thread here on Reddit and thereā€™s also the fests channel on our Discord where everyone is welcome to gush about the amazing fics they have read. While youā€™re doing so, please remember not to flaunt possible dislikes or highlight which fics/tropes/ratings/etc. you have perhaps left unread. After all, we want to be kind towards each other, and all stories regardless of the type of content are equally welcome in the fest and our community in general.

Meanwhile, for the last few days before the fun begins, you can enjoy browsing the list of fandoms in the collection and marvel at the collection tags, guessing who wrote comedy and whose story is hurt no comfort. Who broke the fourth wall? And who wrote the mysterious story with not really character death? If guessing games are not your thing, you can just admire the versatility of our writers, the most popular tags ranging from angst, death, and violence to fluff and love. Itā€™s going to be an amazing fest!

Long Deadline Profile Exchange <3 :)

EDIT April 29: SUBMISSIONS ARE CLOSED! Reviews are due Sunday May 5 3pm AEST. Iā€™ll send reminders 48 hours before.

Have fun and happy reviewing!

**

It's back...

Here we go again, guys! It's the end of another week! So, welcome to the Long Deadline Profile Exchange version... actually, I don't know how many of these we've hosted now. :P

HOW IT WORKS: This is a subreddit event where everyone posts their AO3 (or FFN) profile with some information about the kind of fics they write. Then, the other participants will look through their profiles, read a one-shot or chapter by the author, and then leave a comment on one of their works. (A kudos would be nice too!)

DEADLINE FOR ENTRY is Monday April 29 3pm AEST. (Should equal to about 1am EST if my time zone converter is correct.)

DEADLINE FOR COMPLETION is Sunday May 5 3pm AEST. (Like I said above, should equal to 1am EST if my time zone converter is correct.)

Like I say anytime I host this weekly exchange, I am a permanently exhausted pigeon from the Land Down Under, so please pay attention to the different timeframes for both entering and completing their reviews.

What Are the Rules?

Post your profile link and a short summary of the kind of stories that one might find there (fandom, genre, rating, etc.).

Once you enter, you will have to review at least 4 stories/chapters from 4 different profiles (one from each). Please include in your submission "Reviewed 0/4" so we can keep track.

Your reviews should be thoughtful. The writer should be able to tell that you read the story. Say what you like about the story. Was something funny? Did something touch you? Make you want to throat punch one of their characters? TELL THEM ABOUT IT! At least 50 words/3 sentences per review. ConCrit, as always, is opt-in only.

I would like to continue to challenge folks to read at least one person who is new to them as possible.

If you enter the exchange, DO NOT delete your entry. You must complete the required reviews for the exchange. Please talk to the mods if something comes up and you have concerns about doing something timely.

Finally, as we are all aware, Reddit's been a bit hit and miss in terms of showing all the comments because of a glitch. (As shown by the number of times we've all cursed Reddit in the Discord.) Other reporters have reported that sorting comments by 'old' rather than 'new' has been helpful in getting all of the comments to load.

But above all, have fun and happy reading and reviewing!

If someone in this group has DMed me this past month, please let me know. [possible Reddit glitch]

Twice this month, Reddit has shown me DM notifications...but when I click on them, nothing is there. I don't really talk to anyone on Reddit outside this group, so I figured someone here was trying to get ahold of me. If you have DMed me recently, please let me know. I'm not ignoring anyone! šŸ™šŸ»

EDIT on 4/26: It appears that this is a Reddit glitch. All of the DMs I'm actually getting are coming through. So if someone does want to reach out to me by DM, I'm 99.9% sure I'll see it.

Your favorite ending (types and lines)

There are many good and compelling ways to end a story, and everyone has their own preferences. Perhaps you like cliffhangers? Fan of ambiguous or open endings? Or do you prefer an equivalent of the classic and they lived happily ever after? What's your favorite type of ending to write? And do you have a favorite ending line in a fic or chapter of yours you would like to flaunt? Now's the time! Feel also free to tell me what do you like about it the most, and to give compliments to the great ending lines of others!

Experimental review exchange: Lightning Round!

This works just like any other review exchangeā€¦ except for two things.

  1. There will be 48 hours to complete as many reviews as possible.
  2. The player who leaves the most (qualifying) reviews by the end of the exchange will receive 200 words of reviews on their works. This will be split across chapters and/or stories, with any of the winnerā€™s requests taken into account. (If more than five players participate, the prize total will increase by 200 words for every additional 5 players.) I will write the winnerā€™s reviews. Other players are strongly encouraged to review for the winner as well.

Leave a link to your profile and a recommendation for which fic you would most like reviewed. Usual rules for writing reviews apply. Include a count of how many reviews youā€™ve left.

Closes Wednesday (April 24) at 12:00 AM Central Time. Update your totals by then and Iā€™ll announce the leaderboard with the top 3 and the winner. I hope you all have fun!

EDIT: And timeā€™s up! Iā€™ll give you all a day to update your totals before I post the winner. Remember, reviews left after the deadline donā€™t count towards your total.

AND THE WINNER ISā€¦ ParadoxFirePixie with 61 qualifying reviews! Second place is Meushell with 55 and third place is Mystiquesword with 46. Congratulations to the winner and thank you all for playing! ParadoxFirePixie will receive 600 words of review and all players are strongly encouraged to leave additional comments in their work. I hope you all had fun!

Review Exchange: Hottest Kiss šŸ’‹ šŸ”„

UPDATE: CLOSED TO SUBMISSIONS AND ALL REVIEWS COMPLETE

I previous ran an exchange for best kiss, this time I would like your hottest kiss šŸ”„šŸ’‹

This is your chance to showcase what you would consider the hottest kiss you have written. Just whatever you'd consider your hottest. It's absolutely fine if it develops into more than a kiss as long as there is a good amount of kissing action included.

You have 48 hours from now to post up a one-shot or chapter that features what you'd consider your hottest written kiss. And then until the end of Tuesday 30th April to complete your reviews.

Some rules:

  • You can post one (1) fic in one post. It can be a one-shot or an individual chapter from a longer fic (if it's from a longer fic add any necessary context to your post).
  • Please include title | fandom | rating and warnings | word count | link. Include a short summary that explains why you think it is your hottest kiss.
  • Any rating allowed (including mature and explicit) but please indicate so and include any content warnings.
  • In return, everyone must review at least three (3) other fics from three (3) different authors. Reviews should show you have read the fic and be at least 3 sentences/50 words long and follow KISS:

Kind (don't give concrit unless it's requested and even then be nice).
Insightful (put thought into your comment).
Sincere (be genuine in what you write).
Specific (to the fic you are reviewing).

  • Would be good to mention the kiss in the comment!
  • Please write your review count at the bottom of your post and comment on others posts to let them know you have written a review.

Searching for a beta: Harry Potter x Death Note crossover

Hello everyone!

As the title says, I'm in search of a beta reader for a nice project of mine that I started working on some time ago. It's a Harry Potter x Death Note story, an LxOC romance that deals with ethics, shinigami, yƵkai and the incompetence of the wizarding world in restraining threats that might breach the Status of Secrecy.

I'm not a native english speaker, so I'd appreciate having some help with structure and pacing.

--

To give a little more context:

This story still only has the prologue posted while I'm fixing the first chapter. I had to split them because 12k for a prologue might've been a bit daunting.

It starts with my OC, Anna Green, travelling to Japan for higher education and getting caught up in the Kira case by complete accident. This poses a huge problem because, being a witch, she has to do her best to keep her magic hidden, while being completely unaware of most Muggle conventions. She is fascinated with the Muggle world, sees them very much as a curiosity, and much like most of the half-bloods and purebloods in the wizarding world, has completely ludicrous ideas about their society. One such instance would be when she brings one of the first, mammoth sized, Macintosh Portable computers to university in 2004; wizards are silly and cannot fathom that bigger =/= better when it comes to technology.

At the same time, due to the Death Note's presence on Earth, along with the shinigami, the yokai in Japan are getting brazen and acting out. Just like in WW2, wizards are keeping their heads down and not dealing with the problem unless if affects them directly.

--

Let me know if you're interested. Thank you all in advance!

Your biggest strengths as a writer

Every day is a writing positivity day around this sub, and today, I thought we could try to identify our own writing superpowers! It's all too easy for us writers to be critical of our own work while clearly identifying the strengths in the writing of others. But you know what? We're all good at something. Each and every one of us has a thing we're good at. And identifying our own strengths is a key to improvement as well if you'd rather think about it like that. So what's your writing superpower? Madly good dialogue? Killer pacing? Best jokes ever? Originality of your concepts? Now it's your time to shine and let everyone know how good you are at that thing āœØāœØ And extra points if can identify several things you're good at!

Hey there! It's time for the Profile Exchange! Yes, itā€™s Friday again and Iā€™m posting our weekly profile RE to keep you all entertained over the weekend.

A profile exchange is a subreddit event during which everyone posts their AO3 (or FFN) Profile with some information about the kind of fics they write and then the other participants will look through the profiles, read a one-shot or chapter by the author and then leave a comment on one of the works. A kudos would be nice, too!

Deadline for entry is Sunday, April 21st at 12 PM EST.

Deadline for completion of reviews is Saturday, April 27th at 12 PM EST. Reminders to complete the reviews will be send about 48 hours prior to the deadline.

Once you enter, you will have to review at least 4 stories/chapters from 4 different profiles (one from each).

As you complete the reviews, please respond to the comments of others to indicate that you have completed, and add the number of reviewed fics to your post (e.g. ā€œreviewed 4/4ā€).

And finally, it would be super nice if everyone read at least one person who is new to them šŸ„°

Reddit seems to be a bit glitchy at the moment, not showing all comments on sizeable exchanges. Other users have reported that sorting comments by 'old' rather than 'new' has been helpful in getting all of the comments to load.

Have fun!ā˜€ļø

Late Night Check-In

Well, itā€™s approaching a late night for me. But we havenā€™t had one of these for a while. Soā€¦ letā€™s touch base.

On the writing front, Iā€™ve mentioned this before, but Iā€™ve decided to make Avery Samuels my main focus and update it with every second story. Because I nailed down the final chapter count (122) and thereā€™s no way Iā€™ll get it done otherwise. But Iā€™ll be back writing tomorrow, and hopefully have a new chapter of A Million Things over the weekend:

As for personallyā€¦ I wish that was going well. Iā€™m still job hunting. I just canā€™t get anyone to give me a go. I donā€™t hear back from prospective employers most of the time. Itā€™s gotten me pretty down. Iā€™m where Iā€™m starting to consider alternative career paths that are still in education.

But itā€™s not all doom and gloom. Iā€™m going to the gym. I can hold a plank for 40 seconds now. And Iā€™m going to a creative writing course at the local library this Saturday. Itā€™s about structuring narratives and that sounds exciting.

So, how about you guys? How are you going?
