/r/animalid
This subreddit helps users identify animal species from pictures, videos, audio or calls, tracks, dens, scat, etc. All ID requests should include the animal's LOCATION (country, state, city, name of ocean or coast). This sub is NOT for identifying breed info for cats/dogs or identifying insects/parasites. Comments should be helpful or educational only, and advice should be legal and humane. Welcome!
Have a picture of an animal you need identified? Post it here and let the collective consciousness of reddit ID it for you!
It is best if you have a picture, if not, a good description. Provide a location if you have a picture or not.
1. ID Posts Only
The primary purpose of all posts should be to identify the species of animal in a photo, video, or audio file. Other posts with no ID request will be removed.
2. Posts must have a location provided in the title!
State or province at least, or country if it's small enough to provide a similar level of geographic precision. It is also helpful to include the type of environment your animal is in; forest, suburb, near a lake or river, etc.
3. No "Bugs"
"Bug" in the colloquial sense of "terrestrial arthropod" - insects, arachnids, and other creepy crawlies. While these are animals, they're very abundant and require specialized knowledge. Post them in /r/whatsthisbug for better ID!
4. No Breed Requests
This group is for identifying an animal's species. Breed ID requests for domestic animals will be removed. Post them in /r/cats, /r/DoggyDNA, /r/IDmydog, or a subreddit dedicated to your animal's species.
5. No Violence or Animal Abuse
This group believes in respecting the dignity of nonhuman animals. Violent or abusive comments are not tolerated. In the event dispatching an animal is warranted a poster may be tactfully encouraged to seek a professional for humane euthanasia. Subsistence hunters are welcome here, but refrain from making comments that would be more appropriate for /r/hunting.
Included in this rule are posts with animals stuck in sticky traps or killed by your unsupervised outdoor pet (does not apply to barn cats or livestock guardian dogs).
6. Low-effort and sensationalist comments will be removed at moderator discretion.
This is primarily an educational subreddit. If your comment is a joke, meme, or includes words like "vicious" or "bloodthirsty" it is likely to be removed.

Lego for scale. Thought it was mouse poop but it's weirdly in a pile in the middle of a room. I put it on paper for the picture
Found this guy swimming in our pool. Live in Fort Lauderdale. I have 2 toddlers that like running around the yard. Is he dangerous?
Saw this dog while golfing in SoCal.
Hi all, I was recently camping in rural Nova Scotia (near the Kennetcook river) when I was awoken by a terrifying sound in the night. This was around 1:30 AM if that's relevant. The animal could be heard walking thru the forest nearby, seemingly making slow, loping paces and breaking small branches occasionally, and every 30 seconds or so would make a loud call like a high-pitched wheezing; it sounded as if someone was forcefully exhaling with difficulty, or as if a power drill had started to turn and then seized on a stuck screw, and lasted about a second. We made some loud noises (yelling, banging pots) to try and deter it; it didn't run away but it definitely stopped coming nearer to us after this, but the animal continued its strange call (sneeze? hiccup?) for a good 20 minutes or so.
I think this is all the relevant information I have, but let me know if you have any other questions. Does anybody know what this animal might be?
This gray fox has been showing up on our trail cam a lot lately and yesterday it hopped up on our patio table carrying its prey. What is it?
found them while diving in Marmara Sea / TÞrkiye.
Pretty sure this is mountain lion, as itâs pretty big, but not sure what buddy ate. Any ideas?
What animal was making this noise? In ME
We captured this guy on our security camera the other night. Canât decide what it is. We originally thought fox but it appears to be too small. My wife thinks it may be an opossum. Any help would be appreciated!
I think it might be an owl but i don't know. It does sound a little funny sorry.
It only did it a few times so I couldnât record it. It sounded like WOOhu, and loud like a coyote. It couldâve been a coyote but it was just one of them and it didnât sound like the ones I usually hear. The âhuâ part of it was quieter âWOOhuâ is the only way I could describe it.
Found on facebook and Iâm confused
Sorry i know the audio is not great and the crickets are loud thanks in advance!
Fishing in the ocean off the coast of Vancouver Island and had this thing caught on my line. Tbh it might be more plant than animal I genuinely don't know. For context, it was all connected when I brought it in but taking it off my line it split in half. The longer section is about 1 cm long. My best guess is some sort of baby squid type thing? idk
I couldnât see anything from where I was sitting, but the sound is at the 17 second mark. I heard it repeatedly. Youâll hear my ducks in the background too, but this wasnât from any of our animals. They were all going into the coop for the night on the opposite side of the yard.
have been hearing this recently in the neighborhood. itâs only been happening at night.
