This subreddit helps users identify animal species from pictures, videos, audio or calls, tracks, dens, scat, etc. All ID requests should include the animal's LOCATION (country, state, city, name of ocean or coast). This sub is NOT for identifying breed info for cats/dogs or identifying insects/parasites. Comments should be helpful or educational only, and advice should be legal and humane. Welcome!

Have a picture of an animal you need identified? Post it here and let the collective consciousness of reddit ID it for you!

It is best if you have a picture, if not, a good description. Provide a location if you have a picture or not.

Found an animal in trouble? Follow this link for instructions!

Rules

1. ID Posts Only

The primary purpose of all posts should be to identify the species of animal in a photo, video, or audio file. Other posts with no ID request will be removed.

2. Posts must have a location provided in the title!

State or province at least, or country if it's small enough to provide a similar level of geographic precision. It is also helpful to include the type of environment your animal is in; forest, suburb, near a lake or river, etc.

3. No "Bugs"

"Bug" in the colloquial sense of "terrestrial arthropod" - insects, arachnids, and other creepy crawlies. While these are animals, they're very abundant and require specialized knowledge. Post them in /r/whatsthisbug for better ID!

4. No Breed Requests

This group is for identifying an animal's species. Breed ID requests for domestic animals will be removed. Post them in /r/cats, /r/DoggyDNA, /r/IDmydog, or a subreddit dedicated to your animal's species.

5. No Violence or Animal Abuse

This group believes in respecting the dignity of nonhuman animals. Violent or abusive comments are not tolerated. In the event dispatching an animal is warranted a poster may be tactfully encouraged to seek a professional for humane euthanasia. Subsistence hunters are welcome here, but refrain from making comments that would be more appropriate for /r/hunting.

Included in this rule are posts with animals stuck in sticky traps or killed by your unsupervised outdoor pet (does not apply to barn cats or livestock guardian dogs).

6. Low-effort and sensationalist comments will be removed at moderator discretion.

This is primarily an educational subreddit. If your comment is a joke, meme, or includes words like "vicious" or "bloodthirsty" it is likely to be removed.

What kind of salamander is this?

Seen in central WV today. It had a long, slender body with extremely tiny legs. It looked like a snake at first before I noticed the small legs on it.

Connecticut Backyard: White chest and line between eyes

My mother saw this animal in our backyard eating another small animal. She claims it had a fluffy tail. Bear cub? Wolverine? Gray Wolf? Or maybe just a neighborโ€™s dog/cat?

I need help identifying monkey from an old photograph

https://preview.redd.it/sxq7qgyd141e1.jpg?width=1211&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b9c7fdb2aa63a33675df4cc8532430b8db1015ac

Folk on the zoology sub suggested I post here as well

This is the only surviving photograph of my grandpa's pet monkey. my grandpa is unfortunately not with us anymore so I can't ask him what species it was. I'm trying to restore the full photo but I need a reference to what the monkey might've looked like, the picture isn't good enough quality for me to recognize.

Monkeys are not native here so I'm not sure how helpful location can be, but just in case this is Israel in the mid 1960s

my dad can't remember much (understandable since this photo is 60 years old lol) but he remembers he was really small, around the size of a house cat, and had light brown to grey fur. Any thoughts?

What's this clam like animal?

What's this animal dug up from the shores of Devgad in Maharashtra, India?

The long appendage is I guess for breathing when burrowed under the sand.

Called Chirpula in the local language Marathi.

They cook it and eat it like clams.

TIA

Cat print?

My cat died recently and today I got the tile with his paw prints back. They really donโ€™t look like cat paw prints to me much less my catโ€™s paw prints. The nails are so long and wide. I know the chance they mixed up somehow is very very small but I just need someone to tell me for sure so I can stop overthinking. Are these cat paws?

what type of bird is this? (Central Florida)

the only reason I know itโ€™s a bird is because it flew from one tree top to another; Merlin didnโ€™t even register it as a bird at all

What animal is leaving these holes? Utah

I heard rustling in my garden and when I followed the noise it led me to this hole. Itโ€™s about 3โ€ wide all around and itโ€™s long. I have a snake camera that I put down there and I have yet to find the end of this tunnel. Any idea what made this? I also found a giant pile of dirt near by that Iโ€™m assuming is from this creature.

Anyone know what's making this sound in the woods near my house? (Near Manchester, UK)

I hear this sound often throughout the year, never been able to get a recording until now because it usually stops after just a few times.

ID animal that is burrowing under a neighborhood concrete pool perimeter, Ardeche, France

Location, Southern France, Ardeche department

Signs of the animal (which we are not sure to have seen physically):

  • This burrow (two openings 35-50cm in diameter) is located on our property to the south of the pool under a hedge. The soil is rocky with a bit of loam.
  • Small pile of poop placed in an orderly way within a hole about 10m from the main burrow entrance (pictured - the chain link fence and water pipe (2.5cm diameter) can provide scale).
  • I filled in one burrow entrance and the animal quickly dug a new entrance
  • We have had to do some repairs to the pool pipes as the animal caused some leaks underground.
  • I closed all the holes in the property chain link fence, and the animal stretched/bent open a new one under the fence about 25cm high. There is a faint track that leads to this hole which suggests that it is used daily.
  • Some rooting in the grass opening small holes along the fence (5cm deep x 30cm long) looking for grubs?
  • One day, last year, I saw a long, gray/brown weasel/stoat type animal passing the house in the morning twilight - 95% sure it was not the neighbor's cat. :)
