/r/Tantra
Tantra is the physical, mental, and spiritual path that connects all paths. Think of it as a systems approach to spiritual science.
Compared with most spiritual traditions, most forms of tantra are notable for being primarily focused on personal growth and empowerment and less interested in soteriological concerns like mokṣa, salvation, karma, or the afterlife.
There are many tantric traditions from both Asian and Western communities. All are welcome here as long as they abide by our rules.
Tantra: from the Sanskrit tantram, literally "loom, warp," hence "groundwork, system, doctrine," from tan "to stretch, extend," from PIE root *ten- "to stretch, extend" (see tenet). Online Etymology Dictionary
The path that connects all paths.
Esoteric paths of transformation.
One meaning of "tantric" is "based on the tantras," a variety of traditional texts and teachings mostly concerned with ritual technique. In many ways, looking at original texts from the First Millennium, tantra was thought of as a kind of practical spiritual technology, not as a religion, which explains why it was adopted by so many different religions.
In Hinduism, the opposite of "tantric" is "vedic," referring to the mainstream Hindu traditions that are based on the great sagas known as the Vedas and the later scriptures in the same tradition. Vedic traditions emphasize caste and purity, while many tantric traditions were open to all castes, even those considered "unclean," and practiced rituals that involved "impure" substances and actions.
In Vajrayana (or "Tantric") Buddhism, the opposite of "tantric" is "sutric," referring to the texts and teachings known as the Sutras, most of which were written in the 1st through 5th centuries, before most of the tantras were written. However, this distinction is not clearcut and often leads to some confusion, because the Tibetan monastic traditions, in particular, are heavily sutric, but still claim to be tantric for historical and traditional reasons.
Most vedic and sutric sects and religions are ascetic, aimed at escaping from this world and from what they believe is the illusion of reality that chains us to samsara, the endless cycle of rebirth. They aim to do this through purity, self-denial, proper ritual and behavior, and the annihilation of fear, desire, pleasure, and all other emotions.
Tibetan monastic Buddhism is one example of this. These sects claim to be tantric, but they are in fact mostly sutric. They typically restrict tantra to a tiny elite who have spent decades as celibate monks mastering the sutras. Only then do they have access to tantric rituals and "secret knowledge," which has been repurposed as a way to achieve "enlightenment" and become a Bodhisattva or Buddha.
Similarly, Vedic religions generally teach that asceticism and self-denial are necessary for spiritual progress, and that the ultimate goal of spiritual progress is achieving "liberation," which means liberation from the cycle of life itself. Even if they claim to be "tantric," or to incorporate tantric elements, the tantric rituals they use have been entirely transformed and repurposed toward this goal of abstinence and "liberation."
By contrast, most tantric traditions with authentic roots are simply not interested in liberation, Buddhahood, or the afterlife. They are focused instead on personal growth and empowerment and on creating a better life in this world.
As part of of the focus on personal growth and empowerment, many tantric sects believe that sensory pleasure is not something intrinsically bad, but can instead be a source of energy and motivation that, if properly channeled, can make us stronger and more effective in our lives. In classical terms, most tantric traditions are Dionysian, not Apollonian or ascetic.
Also in contrast with many vedic and sutric traditions, most tantric sects believe that this world is real and that it's the only one we have. Theistic nondual tantric sects typically believe that the ultimate godhead IS the world and all living things, so you do not need to "seek" god or connect with god, you ARE god – and so is everyone and everything else.
Beyond these classifications, it's important to remember that although there are tantric religions – with theological beliefs that vary widely – tantra itself is not a religion. It is an approach to learning, understanding, and acting in this world and becoming a better, stronger, more effective person.
"A person who, irrespective of caste, creed or religion, aspires for spiritual expansion or does something concrete, is a Tantric. Tantra in itself is neither a religion nor an 'ism'. Tantra is a fundamental spiritual science. So wherever there is any spiritual practice it should be taken for granted that it stands on the Tantric cult." Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar

I have a cousin brother, he grew up like a normal person to be around 5'4 - 5'5. But his family wasn't happy. They are big in tantra saadhna etc, spirituality etc. IDK the exact deity they worship. So, his height grew around 5'11 - 6'0. It's not surgery, enhancements chemicals, also not coincidental or some medical condition. He literally told me they are getting something done from their tantrik etc.
The only thing I could find was related to this entire scenario is Mahima siddhi, but afaik, if it was that, then the change should have been temporary, also he personally didn't do anything, so its probably not that.
How is this possible? Have you every seen such stuff happened?
Today, while doing my bhairav nama japa, I decided to play aigiri nandini in the background. when it got completed, jagajjalapalam strotam, started playing due to auto play, I thought it would just be vishnu's all encompassing cosmic form in the video, hence, decided to let it play. But when I opened my eyes after completing the naama japa, it was actually bhagwan narasimha's red eyes staring at me.
The context being, a few days back I was contemplating, whether I should stop bhairav sadhana because I am a vaishnav but then I discussed with my family elders and continued it. But today I had this experience, just while doing the bhairav sadhana. Does this mean something ? Is lord narasimha angry, is there any hint or I should ignore it ?
Hi all, I was performing Kali Pujo yesterday and I accidentally cut my finger. There was blood. I put a band aid and carried on.
However, my intuition says this is linked to Kali Ma.
I have been a devotee of Ma since childhood but recently I have felt closer to her even more. My practices combine a bit both Vamachara and mainstream.
I have been trying to clear some blockages around my manifestations for a while. I read somewhere that when such a thing happens, it usually is a sign from Ma or her dakinis/yoginis.
Can someone advise me on this? Has this happened to anyone before?
Like any breathing techniques, or hatha yoga, along with the daily mantra jaapa. For the uninitiated.
(om bhairvay Namah)
Currently, I am in a relationship with a girl, and we are both sexually active.
Can i do bhairav sadhana?
I have been interested in tantra and yog since long time, my household is very religious and i grew in a environment with bhakti and love. I am a devotee of both Shiva and Vishnu(Krishna in particular) and I am interested in sadhana and upasana of both of them, even though I have some surface level knowledge of working, dedication and devotion it requires and dangerous path of tantra and yog. But I am willing to take it on, how should and where should I start as I don't have any guru or any expert to guide me here.
Hi ,
I read that there are specific pujas to clear past life karma and ancestor karma .
Can anyone suggest tantric puja remedies ?
Thank you
Rarely I have seen a genuine senior person /guru from renowned parampara giving mantra diksha openly.
Just saw a post by atmanandnath of guhanandnath parampara of sri vidya (shakti school) giving mantra diksha.
It will be good idea to talk to him and ask your genuine que and if interested take mantra diksha. Take to him if u like some particular form of devi or wants to start in srividya with bala form of devi. One can/should also ask him about direct bhairva japa which has become popular on internet but is not a standard way to start for various tricky reasons.
Mantra diksha is initial step. Then if one practices sincerly and regularly guru gives gurupaduka diksha later. At a later stage comes poornabshiek, after that one should not change his guru.
Be respectful and always one should offer some donation. It's not just about tradition but any such meeting/interaction with any genuine lineage upasaka/guru is interacting with divine himself. An upasaka/gurus energy and intention gets divisined with decades of practice which flows to a people as per their sincerity n receptivity. This same energy when given with intention and mantra makes a mantra alive for the person (it does affect guru energy just to give initial mantra diksha and infact puts burden of disciples karma after higher level gurupaduka dikshas). So never be casual about meeting such people.

The last two to three months, I have become more and more obsessed with ma Kali spiritually. Whenever I am in front of her, I get very emotional.
It is very difficult for me to decide where to begin. I don’t know any guru.
I read on Reddit that start with bhairav sadhana first. After that you can do ma kali sadhana. Because bhairav sadhana makes us mentally and spiritually very strong.
But I'm very confused and I want to start asap. because I'm not able to focus on anything because of this.
Please help and guide me.
This can be chanted every day without guru or any thing with just Shraddha and what time is best to do this
Basically what the title says. I am looking for genuine seekers and practitioners and what's a better place than kumbha ? It's my first time going to kumbha, so I don't have much info. I researched online and got to know about specific akhadas, I am just thinking of visiting akhadas, who are mostly naga yogis, I couldn't find any akhadas specifically dedicated to tantra, so I am not very sure what to look for if I want a genuine experience or meet a genuine person.
Extended: By genuine experience, what I want is to meet someone whom I can talk to, tell him about my own practices and stuff and then ask some questions, preferably they will give me some insights or guide me or give some practise which I can do at home.
I always find some oil remaining when I light the brass diya. I was searching for videos on how to make wicks for brass diyas so that they fully burn oil.
I found out this video on YouTube
Interesting idea of how to insert the wick in diya.
Do some of you guys do this?
Is Bhairava Sadhana standardized or is it subjective to each sadhaka?
Is the next step in the path revealed spontaneously or instructed by guru?
Is it one guru for the entire path or multiple gurus involving multiple initiations?
What does the actual sadhana involve? Is it just nama mantra japa all the way through? Will there be other complicated Sadhanas involving Homas, Purashcharana, on specific places like cremation grounds, forests, specific kshetra etc, in the advanced stages?
Is there a rule that once someone starts in Bhairava Sadhana, they have to complete the sadhana till success?
Are there any consequences for leaving the Bhairava Sadhana once started?
Does the Sadhana of Batuka Bhairav is also considered as Full Bhairava Sadhana?
I would be grateful for the answers and guidance. Thanks. 🙏🏻
Hi, I recently started going to Kadampa Tradition (Buddhism) and I understand it as a Vajrayogini practice that unites Sutra with Tantra. Anyone familiar with and what I could expect in terms of how do they approach Tantra?
The meditation is doing me very well and the subjects of meditation and reflections about life are doing me very well...
Coming from a "mutually exclusive " type of thinking (Roman Catholic) that has a "don't serve two masters" type of mentality, I wonder if my own studies of Tantra might clash somehow.
Should I be worried about that?
Does anyone had similar train of thought with other traditions?

Any books that classify and properly describe various evil things appear in Hindu mythology like bhoot, pret, pishacha, dakini and many more
In western countries they have proper grimoires and codex where they have properly described their evil things
So any books like this exists ?

Under the effects of ecstasy, sensuality becomes natural and free of taboos. Within this experiential framework, we feel liberated, in a state of ‘pure existence’, our sensory centers expand in such a way that everything is charged with intrinsic beauty. The physical experience loses its marked biological character to become a spiritual trance, while bodies intertwine in a spiral around the soul in a mystical embrace with tantric connotations, provoking the alchemy of lovers. However, one of the least exposed aspects regarding MDMA is the sexual potential that this substance offers.
I was doing surya kartik sadhana but in sankalpa I said i would start it before 8 am (to build a habit of waking up early) but unfortunately today i was unable to start it before 8. Is my sadhana compromised ?
I'm curious to hear how everyone deals with this. It's been a very intense issue for me, especially in relationships. I have a hard time letting go. Do you put faith in a certain deity, like Shiva? Chant a mantra? Meditate? Do you find anything particularly effective?
I know it won't disappear over night but I really need a good coping mechanism.
What material should the knife be made out of? I do know use of steel and plastic is prohibited.
My family member has been listening to the brahma Kavacham and reciting it. Just wondered what the difference is between the two and if it's ok for a householder to do it. Thank you.
I have had some really weird or idk but some sort of dreams which felt very real.
Let me get into its details, so since i was a kid I have been in awe of Maa Kali and I have adored her since childhood. So the dream was like this " I am in some sort of place, not really sure where it was but I could feel the presence of something fierce as if a big battle has been going on and the energy is really intense, then i see Maa kali in front of me and i cant really see but i know its her but then i see that maa durga has also appeared but she is mad at me for something which i cant really place, now I can see that Maa Kali and Maa Durga are in an intense fight where Kali ma is trying to save/defend me and Ma Durga is trying to destroy me or something. This dream was really weird but it made me feel an actual presence of something bigger than this world.
So the next dream was after few months of previous dream, it was about how I was in cremation ground near a temple of Lord Shiva and as I was circling the pyre, I could see some aghoris have started to chant some mantras and they have made a circle before me and i tried to ran from there and i saw a small kid trying to lift something it as like a clay mountain or something, i tried to help however as soon as the kid looked at me it was Kid Hanuman who just stared right at me then he just grabbed me and tried to pull me but the energy was so intense and fierce i couldnt bare it and i just woke up.
Could anyone explain what this might be?
I am A Newbie so i want this certain information for things to go correctly, so i am seeking your advices and suggestions dear Senior Brother and Fellow Practiceners, i would highly appreciate your helps.( if by any chance i am doing some Dumb things then please tell me about it)
My Journey Started During Early Summer 2023 and after That i literally Got lost from the path of spiritual for 3 times and when i again return to the path of spiritual, i am more Stable and Determined in my Spiritual journey and I can say it's now unbreakable and unshakeable.
During Late Summer 2024, i started my meditation but no Mantra Japa only normal meditation till then and after that i started my japa on Krishna Janmastami then it went well but for some reason i stop my japa then again i started my Japa 4 or 5 days before Navaratri and it's going well till now, untill yesterday when for some reason i didn't able to do my mantra japa in a whole day but i do have some kind bad feeling about it.
(1) Don't know what is happening but after Doing Mantra jaap until now yesterday i didn't able to do my jaap for a whole day and for few days i was having some problems before doing my mantra jaap and i do have some bad feeling about it, Don't know what but i knew something is not right, may be i overthinking but what is your opinion about it?
(2) Which Deity Form Should i Worship Cause right Now I Am Worshipping 4 From Of The Deity which are(a) Lord Shiva for trying to controlling over senses and all, (b) Lord Vishnu For learning the Management and how things go/run according to his will, (c) Bhairav Baba for overcoming my fear and (d) Lord Krishna For his Will of Dharma like teaching me the Bhagavad Gita. Well I know that They are The Reflection of The Parmatma Yet it's Getting difficult for me to leave them and worship only one form of the deity. On earlier One Point( Before worshipping Four forms)
-> i was only Worshipping Lord Shiva( Getting control over my Senses and The deattachmet) ->then Lord Shiva show me to Lord Vishnu( To Learn How to Manage and Run Things) and then Lord Vishnu again show me to Lord Shiva and ->then Lord Shiva Show me to Lord Ram(To Learn Respect and Not to cross my limits) and Then Lord Ram show me to Lord Shiva and ->then again Lord Shiva show me to Lord Krishna( To Learn Dharma in my Life)
and then I want to Worship Lord HariHara form ( a symbolism form That They are one) of the deity but i didn't get any proper information about them so i have to worship them in two different forms(Shiva and Vishnu) but then at one of the Bramhamuhurata before doing my japa i felt a Sudden Fear it's too fierceful it's literally scared me and because of that i stopped my japa until i added Bhairav Baba naam japa and then the fear gone but i still lack one thing and it's the way of a dharma which i get after i added Lord Krishna from and That's how i got to worship four form of Deity. But then others saying i should worship one deity form and i don't know what to do right now, but still i am Worshipping four right now. What do you think about it?
(3) Should i only mantra jaap on Bramhamuhurata or can i chant it during day and night also? Currently i doing 3 mala jaap of each four deity form which is total 12 mala jaap and yep no sankalpa taken. What is your advice about it?
(4) I would like to know the basic rule and regulations of doing mantra jaap in case i am doing anything wrong or i left anything unknowingly?
I still have more questions but i would ask about it later cause it would too overwhelming for you guys and please enlighten me. (In Case if you think i am being crazy for doing this much for a newbie please tell me about it)
Currently I am listening Kala Bhairav ashtakam and Bhairav chalisa I don’t lamp Diya or bhog it’s okay to just listen Kala Bhairav ashtakam and Bhairav chalisa
I am a very bad student i have adhd cannot focus nor do i have the will to sit down to study even if i do sit down and start study i have a hard time understanding the concepts even if i do understand something i cannot remember anything after 2 days so basically i lack the will, understanding, memory and focus and it is exausting.
I initially wanted to do saraswati sadhna but then figured i will be needing deeksha or at least an updesh but with Ganapati thats not the case i think.
So someone who has been doing ganpati upasna please suggest some sadhna for me which can help me with the problems mentioned above also please tell what asan, mala, if to use oil/ ghee and most importantly the mantra.
Please guide.
