En stash eller ett stash?

Vi har en pågående diskussion om huruvida det heter "EN stash och stashEN" eller "ETT stash och stashET". Frågan uppstod i en handarbetesförening på ett campus i Sverige under en konversation om en samling garn eller en så kallad "yarn stash" på engelska. Någon med språkvetenskaplig kunskap som kan lista ut den korrekta formen?

Känner v Känner till v Vet

In the phrase "I don't know enough Swedish words", I can sort of justify each of them and translator programs give me different answers.

So just wondering which would be correct

Förkortningar på svenska

Hej allihopa!

Finns det en ordlist någonstans som har alla, eller den mest användade, förkortningar på svenska? Jag hittade en på svenska.se, men det hade alla förkortningar, innehåller förkortningar som används bara i ordboken.

Jag känner "osv, iaf, pga" t.ex., men jag tror att jag missar någonting, speciellt när jag skriver, men också när jag läser.

Would you use the term "bistånd" to refer only to financial aid?

Ive heard the term used as financial support and then in more poetic settings like "Guds bistånd", Im just wondering if it extends to any sort of help in modern swedish?

I need more learning ideas

I really want to become fluent in Swedish. So far I'm taking it on Duolingo and watching a lot of courses on YouTube and note taking, as well as quizlet's for vocabulary and I also am listening to Swedish music.

What should I do to help more? I would prefer not to spend any money on courses, but like textbooks are fine.

any recommendations for online swedish courses?

im not sure where else to put this question but i figured here's the best place to do it. my girlfriends birthday is coming up. shes swedish and speaks the language, but im not and dont and i think it'd be cool to learn it for her. ive never taken an online language class before, so im wondering if anyone has any recommendations? preferably not super expensive, but i'd obviously be willing to pay for it. im looking for a class thats thorough and extensive, not like duolingo or smth. thanks so much! :)

But theres already the word "flamma", and if its a small fire "glöd"?

Swedish spelling consistency

I'm currently thinking about learning Swedish, but I am a little worried about Swedish spelling. My rule is that I don't mind when a language has complicated spelling rules as long as I can easily predict the pronunciation of the word when I know all of them. I can accept a few irregural words. I read an article about Swedish ortography on Wikipedia and from what I understand it usually works this way, but not always. So my question is: when I learn a new Swedish word without hearing the pronounciation, how probable it is that I will predict it wrong?

Bogefors betyder...?

Hej! I John Ajvide Lindqvists novell "Pappersväggar" finns det namnet "Bogefors". Min fråga är om det är ett ortnamn eller ett efternamn. Och vad är namnets betydelse? Tack på förhand!

Language learning advice

Hello

I started learning with Duolingo a month ago. I can understand very very basic sentences and phrases. I’ve watched a couple of shows in Swedish with Swedish subtitles, but it’s tricky to follow along and quite tiresome at times.

My goal for the year was to achieve conversational level of fluency in another language, and I’m hoping my Swedish can improve enough by the end of the year to achieve this. Thanks.

Borsta Tandtrollen bort

Song lyrics (taken from an online source)

Bland alla troll som finns här ute i Sveriges långa land

Är säkert Bosse tandtroll värst som bor ut i din tand

Han gnager och han gnager ofta med sin fru i par

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1a9CcMDM7FI

(first 20 seconds)

A few questions...

  1. In line one it sounds like she just says ut (rather than ute - which would be the grammatically correct word to say - and is what they have in the online lyrics). Am I right, is she just saying ut? And if so maybe that could be a dialectical thing? Or maybe she is saying ute, or just being a bit lazy/creative with the pronunciation for the sake of the rhyme...
  2. My main question - bor ut i din tand - again makes no grammatic sense due to the use of ut. But I am wondering, is she actually saying borr ut i din tand? I think maybe she is.... I think maybe she is cos she rolls the R. But I am not certain...
  3. Lastly - Han gnager och han gnager ofta med sin fru i par - i know what she means essentially. But just wonder if the literal translation is with his wife 'in a pair' or could it be understood more as with his wife 'along with him', sort of like his wife sometimes comes along for the days outing. The focus being more on 'as a companion for the day' rather than strictly literally 'a pair'.

Försvenskning av engelska låneord

I svenskan så försvenskar vi många ensgelska låneord, och det ser ofta ut likanande ut. Ex. date - Dejt, mail - mejl, etc. Varför andvänder vi oss av bokstaven J så ofta? Ska göra en presenation på detta i svenskan så någon källa till det du säger hade varit bra men ändå helt ok.

Swedish movie or video game recommendations

Do you have recommendations of films spoken in Svenska, I mainly love fantasy, adventure, historical fiction, so something from those gernes would be great! Only one I can think of is Ronja Rövardotter.

Then also video games that are spoken in Swedish, and anything goes. Mainly why I ask is because large part of my English skills come from those medias, so I guess it would help with Swedish too. Tack så mycket!

What's the difference between "koppla av" and "slappna av"?

I got a message "Hoppas du kan koppla av", but I usually always used "slappna av" to say "relax".

Understanding "jag hälsar på vänner"

Hi guys. I'm a few weeks into learning Swedish. I use Babble and they have the above as one of their sentences. They say that it translates to "I visit my friends", but when I look up the meaning of "vänner", it says that it just means "friendless." Is there another meaning for "vänner" that the dictionary doesn't include?

Tongue position with the letter I

Seeking advice/opinions on tongue position when saying the letter I

Watching Swedish Linguist

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agGvWgXNprE

he places the tip of the tongue at the front/centre of the mouth (touching the front teeth) and (with regards to height) kind of half way up the front lower teeth touching the back of them (and this seems to create a space between the flat of the tongue and the floor of the mouth).

However watching Swedish Made Easy

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gxXOWJGRPI

she places the tip of the tongue slightly off to the side of the mouth (in her case to her left side) touching the teeth there. She really highlights the need to do this in her video (at approx the 1 minute point). In all other regards she seems to be doing it similarly to Swedish Linguist.

I think I have seen (in their facial expressions) that some people do do this SIDE positioning.

I am wondering what peoples opinions on this are... in terms of side vs front centre.

Also wondering if the SIDE tongue postion is done on the RIGHT side by some people (as I think I may have seen this), and if that is just a matter of personal choice...

She can't buy milk OK

Men jag förstår inte hur jag skulle säga olika saker :

  1. She can stop to buy something but not milk (probably there is no milk left, milk shop is far away,...) --> "Anna sa att hon kan köpa inte milk."?

  2. Eller: She can buy milk but is not necessary ---> "Hanna säger att hon kan inte köpa mjölk"?

Men, om INTE måste vara före verbet, är 2) och 3) ok? Hur kan jag annars säga det?

Learning Swedish- if I have the equivalent of a 3-4 year old Swedish kid, what do you think are the best TV shows for kids I could watch to start learning more by watching? (Open to reading books, too)

For instance, I grew up in the United States. If the same question were posed to me for English, off the top of my head, I'd probably say: Sesame Street and Blue's Clue's, and probably some others I can't think about right now. Shows maybe centered around children's learning, basic education-type entertainment.

Ideally, I'd be able to stream the shows (or read the books) online, but if that's not possible, it's all good.

Tack så mycket!

---

EDIT: As one user was kind enough to point out, I rewrote my question in the Title a few times and it looks like I deleted the word "vocabulary" by mistake at some point.

I was going for "a 3-year-old Swedish kid's grasp of the Swedish language" or something like that.

---

EDIT 2: Peppa Pig (aka. Greta Gris) was my favorite recommendation from this thread, and it's conveniently available on YouTube. Thanks for all the recommendations!
