What's new in Southampton?

Just doing a roundup on what's new in the last 6 months.

Any new shops, restaurants, bars, cafes, bakeries, events, activities, club nights and things to do that have opened recently that you'd recommend?

Karaoke. Friday. Saturday.

Karaoke, Saturdays. Fridays. Hampton of the south. My misses can sing, and I wanna build her confidence and just have jokes with others and their song alongs. Seems Karaoke on a Saturday and Fridays is obscure but lil monkies (kids) inundate every other night
Anywhere?

International Students

I get that coming over to a new country must be a big thing but it seems that a lot of new students in the city spend the first few months, not realising they have to press a button at a crossing whilst they adjust. Also, if you're on the bus, watching super loud tiktoks, then please buy yourself some earphones and your fellow passengers won't hate you.

Best halal food?

Going out with my mate from work and he only eats halal, can someone recommend the best place to go?

My initial suggestion was portswood piri piri as I’ve always loved it there, but chicken isn’t his preference… he prefers beef.

Go…

Edit: thanks so much for all the recommendations, looks like we’ll be going on more than one outing! Appreciate it

Embarrassing video help?

I was walking up to Bargate earlier after getting off work and a couple of teenage gentlemen came up and asked to interview me about general knowledge, ostensibly for a college project?

I was really tired and walking with a cane because i recently hurt my ankle and was trying to keep my weight off it.

Anyway, I agreed because I only saw the guy's microphones, but then after he asked my name I noticed his friend filming on his phone and realised it was probably a tiktok. I'm very shy and didn't want to be on film so I probably came off super stilted and awkward.

They asked some basic maths questions but I had decided I wanted to leave so I tried to say "I'm tired and my head is fuzzy" but ended up saying "I'm fried", which set them off laughing. I tried to clarify my intended meaning. I can't recall how the interaction ended because I was panicking internally about my boss somehow seeing this or getting a twitter hate mob for walking with a cane when I'm just mildly injured and not disabled.

Anyway lads if you're reading this please don't post that video. If anyone sees it on tiktok can you DM me the link so I can ask the guy to take it down? They seemed nice enough to do that but I didn't ask them to.

Midday Football

I used to play a lot of football but now I work in hospitality I cannot play 5/11aside in the evenings or weekends. Wondering if anyone plays during the day midweek and would be happy for a rusty goalkeeper to join Matt

How do students afford to pay to live in a flat or student halls?

Genuinely curious I passed ‘Emily Davies’ student halls today and was curious what they are like TO MY SURPRISE….. they are wanting a starting price of £325 a week ( just the room/ flat) To my shock - I know some students don’t receive much financial help from the government/ don’t at all. And it got me asking the question - who can actually afford that in this day and age ? Especially students who are studying 24/7 and don’t have time for full time work.

Silverlake Stadium Parking

Due to go watch the football at Silverlake stadium tonight, but not sure what the parking situation is like as not been before. On the saints website it says can no longer book parking - where else is suitable to park?

Not really wanting to have a particularly long walk (short term mobility issues at the moment) or get there and find no place to park. Not sure what the public transport links are like either.

Any help / advice welcome!

General safety of Polygon area/Bedford place?

I am a student who has moved into a house share about 5 minutes walk from bedford place. I don’t know Southampton well, but I’m pretty worried about my car, which I have taken with me. I don’t know how true it is, but i’ve been told there a lot of vehicle theft around the city - how true is this? and am I in a high risk area? I don’t know many people actually from here so it’s hard to get knowledge from word of mouth.

In general the impression i’ve got is I won’t find trouble unless I look for it (pretty much a good rule of thumb for every city), but some advice or local knowledge on places to ‘avoid’ or what not to do would be much appreciated as an anxiety ridden autistic

Parking university

Hey, I need to attend the Highfield campus for a few lectures and am struggling with getting there. No good public transport options that don't include a 30 mins + walk each side. Also struggling to find a car park. Happy to have to walk 20-30 mins at one end only and it's just for another 4 visits so don't mind paying over the odds for parking...if I can just get there!!!

Moving to Southampton?

Hi guys I’m 18M, taking a gap year and planning on moving out of my parents’ house soon due to increasingly negative home environment.

I did a lot of research and so far Southampton has best fit my criteria of affordable rents, good job opportunities and young population.

I’m thinking of working there as a real estate agent and working a hospitality/retail job on the side, and doing house sharing for my rent to save money.

Anyone have any recommendations for good areas I should be looking for to live in? (I don’t mind paying a bit extra if the area is close to a university, and has good amenities).

Just for context, I’m currently living in North-West London with my parents, and have a few thousand quid saved up.

Any input/recommendation/stories from locals will be much appreciated!

Southern Water direct debit

I'm currently paying my water bill by direct debit, however the monthly bill is way too high so there's quite some balance in the account. Do I get the refund when I move out of this property or what's gonna happen otherwise?
