Commute via car from NW London to Earley?

Hi,

I'm soon to be starting a new job near Earley station. I currently live in NW London near Watford. I'm wondering, what's the traffic situation like near Earley?

I've heard that traffic in Reading is pretty bad, but Earley is towards the outskirts, so will it be as bad during morning and evening rush hours?

Also how is the M4 heading towards Reading in the morning, and toward London in the evening? Waze is estimating my commute would be around 1hr 30mins - does that feel accurate?

Thanks for any info :)

how lenient is uni of reading with grades?

hello

so i got my results a month ago, and i didn’t really do as well as i had hoped to and achieved ABC.

the course i want to apply for is bsc architecture where the standard offer is ABB. i know that it’s in clearing right now for CCC, but i didn’t really plan to apply for this year as i initially wanted to do an art foundation anyway, and have already paid the fee for the course.

but i feel scared because what if that was my only chance in getting in?

i’ve heard that uni of reading can be generous with people below standard requirement and give them offers despite missing the grade requirements with their predicted, however since i’m literally applying with my grades which are already set in stone, i’m wondering whether i’ll be treated differently because of this? or will i still be able to apply to reading despite being one grade short? am i being too aspirational?

Any good independent bookshops in Reading/Caversham?

As above. Any recommendations would be appreciated, I support my local bookshops at home and would like to do the same when at Uni in Reading.

Hey, Just want to know, how’s the social life, rooms, and everything else at Wantage.

I heard it’s really old, so does it have lifts or not?

Thanks :)

Birthday banners!

Where in town can I find a place that sells happy birthday banners that closes like after 7pm? By the time I get to town some shops are closed hence why I need a shop that closes after 7

What is the rental market like in Reading?

Looking to move soon , anyone have an idea of what the market is like in and around Reading recently? I can’t see much rental stock, is it crazy competitive out there at the moment for a tenant? Anyone got first hand experience?

Co-working spaces in Reading

Any other self-employed/remote workers here? Now that the nights are getting longer, my cabin fever is starting to set in. Can anyone recommend a good co-working space in or around Reading? I've heard The Curious Lounge is good but wondered if there's anywhere else worth checking out.

Chess match?

Hey! I used to play chess when I was a kid and I recently bought a chess board hoping to practice and play it leisurely on the weekends. I was wondering if anyone would like to have a chess match? I don’t consider myself very good at chess so send me a text!

Any good garages around Caversham area?

Hi, Does anyone have recommendations for garages around Caversham. I think the tyre has a small puncture. I noted some recommendations from previous posts from other people but I was wondering if there might be a good place closer to where I live.

Thank you !

Local Investors.

Reading is an amazing town with a strong, supportive community that deserves more than the cheap, lifeless chain restaurants taking over and ruining the true spirit of dining out and community connection.

These big chains don’t care about the local impact or the people they serve they’re just here to make a quick buck.

We’ve been part of the Reading community for years, working alongside local businesses and getting to know the heart of this town. As independent business owners, we’ve seen firsthand how much this community values quality, local connections, and sustainability.

That’s why we’re transforming an outdated food spot into a modern pub restaurant business focused on local, fresh ingredients and countryside British cuisine with a creative twist. We’ll be working closely with transparent suppliers and local farmers, ensuring everything we serve is sourced with care.

Our focus is on creating a true rustic, home-like dining experience with a warm atmosphere perfect for families and friends. Offering locally crafted Berkshire drinks, supporting and empowering local breweries, all while delivering exceptional, non-robotic customer service. Our goal is to completely redefine what it means to eat out, giving Reading and Berkshire the top-notch dining experience they truly deserve.

With this opportunity, we’re looking to give back to the community, not line the pockets of big corporations. It’s time to bring something fresh to the table… literally! A place that puts Reading first, with real food, local ingredients, and a business that actually cares about its impact on the people and environment around it.

If you’re a local investor looking to support something that truly benefits the community or know who could be interested , let’s chat!

Asbestos removal company

Anyone have had to deal with getting rid of your old shed that had asbestos coating on the roof? I am trying to find companies that can help me (relatively at a low cost), so any lead would be appreciated. Thank you.

Wildlife in Prospect Park question

Has anyone here ever seen foxes, badgers or roe deer anywhere in Prospect Park?

I saw neither when I visited the park during my visit to Reading last summer, but then I didn't spend a great deal of time in that park due to it raining a lot.

Oxford Road - buying a house

Looking at buying a property in Reading (moving into the area) and seen several on streets that are just off Oxford Road which seem nice properties. Mentioned to someone who lives in Reading that we were looking at Oxford Road area to live and got the response “good luck with that, rather you than me”.

Is it a bad area to move to overall or just bad reputation that it can’t shake?

(Some of the properties were on Edinburgh Road, Albany Road and Richmond Road for example)

The Lyndhurst has the worst sunday roast ever… Actually shocked!

After reading many positive reviews about it in this subreddit and looking at google reviews (wish I did a deeper dive) it all looked very positive.

Went with family and wow... Actually speechless at how bad the food was. Wish Sweeney was open so we could've gone there instead.

Unseasoned. Small portions. Cold vegetables. Misleading menu. Said 'homemade' yorkshire puddings and when I inquired about allergens (dairy free) the waitress brought out a frozen bag of Aldi's own yorkshire pudding.

I also ordered the vegan roast and got given the choice between sausages or vegan burger. The website says 'nut roast'! I got given cauliflower cheese and yorkshire pudding on my plate!

Actually shocked by this. This was my first time going.

Restaurant recommendations

Hello! My partner & I just arrived at Reading for some work. We’re looking for good restaurants to eat or any sightseeing recommendations. We’ll leave in around 3 to 4 hours so anything in that time frame would be great!

Simple lunch recommendations

I work in the centre of Reading and have been going to either M&S or the ridiculously overpriced Itsu.

I’m not a fan of Pierre's at 16, cause I found it too salty.

Ideally need something I can grab quickly and take back to the office

TIA

Moving to Reading

Hello there! We decided to move to Reading this autumn. We have two children in primary school, and my partner will commute to Paddington once or twice a week. Other than Caversham and Emmer Green, which areas would you recommend as nice to live in? Is Tilehurst, the south part away from Oxford Road, a nice area?
