Seriously, I rarely see any folks talking about Chairmen Of The Board’s music outside of their most well known single ‘Give Me Just A little More Time’ which it seems everyone knows but nobody’s cares about the wider band. I however have my entire playlist filled with Chairmen Of The Board bops from their original 70’s hits to their most recent revival work.
For context, if anyone doesn’t know who Chairmen Of The Board are, they were a soul group that was popular right at start of the 1970’s and stayed there for awhile but quickly fell out of the public interest despite still making good music for many years after. They eventually disbanded but came back later to revive the band and create new songs in the modern day. Although General Johnson (my hero btw. I wish I had the pipes this man was packing when it comes to singing so well) passed away in 2010 the same year that the group released their beach music album, the group continued to go strong even after all original members have passed or retired. Although they still aren’t mainstream, I’m fairly certain they still continue to chart in the soul subgenre fairly frequently.
Anyway yeah I’m just sad that their music is almost never discussed outside of ‘Give Me Just A Little More Time’ because by golly do they have some absolutely terrific masterpieces that are just waiting to become mainstream. My particular favorites are “Everything Is Tuesday” and “The Twelfth Of Never” from their album ‘In Session’ released 1970, and “Summer Love” and “Elmo James” from their album ‘Treasure Chest Volume 1’ and their album ‘Gold’ respectively. God those songs give me goosebumps whenever I hear them because they are just flawless in every way from the vocals to the instrumental work to the message being portrayed. You can tell I’m the biggest nerd when it comes to these guys and honestly I’m very proud of it. I just wish more people would share my same love for this incredible group!
What are the best Rap/Hip Hop/R&B/Soul songs with a Halloween vibe?
Every time I listen to this song, I listen to it a second time. It’s fabulous.
