I’d never read the books or seen any information on the show so I didn’t have many expectations. But man the narrative and acting is so bad. It’s like I have no idea what the hell is going on and not in the good way. I hope later seasons are better because I’ve only watched two episodes and it’s pretty bad. I know a lot of people have already said this but I want reassurance that sticking through this will be worth it.
I honestly really disliked the Thule plot line. It was too similar to the CoHF trope where they go into another dimension and that’s the key to defeating the villain. Same thing (sort of) happened in Chain of Thorns… I just don’t enjoy the use of another dimension as a way to resolve a complex plot, it leaves too many plot holes and possibilities open. I think that Ash’ introduction would have worked without needing to dive into Thule and Janus to me seems so irrelevant… yet another evil version of Jace. I think this definitely cheapened the ending to TDA which was shaping up to be amazing.
I’ve read every main series in the TSC except for the eldest curses (it thew me off that it was cowritten and each book is set in a different point in time), however, I want to start a reread of the entire TSC universe to prepare for TWP. Is TEC required reading? Is there anything in those books that significantly adds to the lore, or foreshadows Wicked Powers in any way?
So, I just started watching the show. And I have a question.
DOES IT GET BETTER? I mean, the acting is really, really tragic right now and I just 3 episodes in. Please tell they get better!!!
Hey, guys. I've been reading 2 to 3 books of The Shadowhunters Chronicles since 2018ish in release order and I was set to read The Red Scrolls of Magic this year. After doing it in July, I was underwhelmed by it, which was the first time happening to me after a Cassandra Clare book (including the novella collections). I was thinking that maybe I outgrew her books (I'm 32M), but I decided to give them another try and read Ghosts of the Shadow Market. To my surprise, I'm loved it, despite that awful first novella (Cast Long Shadows).
Now, looking back, TEC1 shows a shallow Magnus (which wasn't present in The Bane Chronicles), I could tell who was the Big Bad (which says a lot, since I'm usually oblivious to this type of reveal), there's a lot of brand names, the dialogs are ordinary for the lack of a better word (and Cassie gives anything but ordinary in her books), and the books feels too silly and YA-ish. There are some great moments in it, like the portrayal of early Malec relationship and Alec's insecurities with it.
Am I alone in this or anyone else felt the same? Does TEC2 (The Lost Books of the White) gives the same vibes or Cassie and Wesley Chu make things right? I fully intend to keep reading everything, but I want to adjust my expectations.
Hello! Christmas is coming and I looking for a gift for my girlfriend. Is there any gadgets or merch from Cassandra Clare? I think she already have all books from her.
Many people hate Sebastian Morgenstern, and I believe one of the main reasons is that he is a very complex character, and understanding such characters is really difficult. We tend to hate them because it’s the simplest route; we don’t really understand how they can commit certain actions that seem inhumane and unjustifiable to us. Since we hate what he has done, we choose to hate him. However, I believe I understand him. Yes, he has committed atrocities and caused a lot of harm, but I don’t think the blame lies with him; rather, I think it lies with Valentine. He made him this way, and I’m not saying this to justify him, but because it is literally true. Valentine poisoned him with demonic blood and regarded him as a pawn even before he was born, like an experiment, not as a person, not as a child, but simply as a piece to manipulate for his own purposes. He knew that the blood would harm him, that it would make him inhuman, that nothing good would remain in him. Despite this, he chose to give it to him.
Some argue that the Downworlders, even though they have demonic blood, can be good, while Sebastian, having the same type of blood, is evil. This implies that he asked for it, that he was evil because he wanted to be. However, it’s not that simple. If Downworlders can have demonic blood and still be good, then Sebastian should be able to be good too. But the reality is different: he is a Shadowhunter, and there has never been a Shadowhunter with demonic blood. The forces at play are incompatible; a Shadowhunter cannot have both. Their nature requires only angelic blood. When demonic blood mixes with angelic blood, the result is devastating: Sebastian goes insane, loses the ability to have genuine thoughts, and becomes inhuman. For Downworlders, however, demonic blood is part of their essence; it is in their DNA, and it doesn’t automatically make them evil.
When Sebastian was born, even his mother hated him, believing that there was nothing good in him, considering him a monster. She couldn’t see him as her son, only as an abomination, something unworthy of life. I can understand Jocelyn’s pain, but I don’t understand how she could view her son that way. When a child has problems, you don’t abandon them and hope for their death; you help them. If they have a disability or a problem, you support them, not hate them.
Sebastian grew up with Valentine in a small cottage in Idris. He never had the chance to know anyone his age or to make friends. Valentine psychologically tortured him, telling him that his mother abandoned him because there was something wrong with him, that he was a monster and that no one would ever love him. In response, little Jonathan asked, “can you fix me?” Imagine a child asking his own father something like that. When I read that scene, I burst into tears. I don’t understand how Valentine could say something like that when it was entirely his fault. He also punished him with demon metal; his back was covered in scars. When something went wrong, he hurt him. Who knows how many other things he did to him, but we don’t know because we only know 1% of what Sebastian endured for 17 years. He had to endure psychological and physical torture from his own father, who was also his abuser. He could never have human contact with anyone, and as if that weren’t enough, Valentine left Sebastian alone to go to Jace, abandoning him for days and months—a child. Frankly, I can’t blame Sebastian for hating Jace so much. I’m not saying it’s right, but I can understand it. Imagine if your father preferred someone else to you, his own child, and constantly compared you to him.
And despite everything he went through—all the pain inflicted by Valentine, the abandonment by Jocelyn, and the lack of anyone in his life fighting for him, someone to cling to—he managed to move forward, to live for 17 years in absolute pain. In the end, when the blade laced with heavenly fire pierced him, it destroyed his demonic side, and only then was he able to find peace. For the first time, he felt light, because damon blood has finally gone him down both physically and mentally. I found peace in death; I don’t believe there is anything sadder than this. He could not study, he could not grow, he could not live his life. He did not have a good adolescence; he never had anyone. Honestly, he is my favorite character in all of TSC. I loved him so much from beginning to end, and no one will ever make me hate him.
I'm rewatching Shadowhunters and plan to get the books soon I've gotten to the part where we found out "Sebastian" identify we know he spared Valentine and they become allies i don't really know Jonathan goal in all this but Valentine is obviously kill all demons and downworders my question is why would Jonathan actively allow Valentine to do this when if he did get his wish granted Jonathan would also die as he has demon blood and Valentine didn't actively say spare his son.
I tried reading it last year but just didnt like it. I kind of forgot what it was about, but I just want to know if it was significant to the story?
Does anyone have the pdf or screenshots of the Seelie Queen/Jonathan story?
I saw it circling on tumblr some snippets of it and I was wondering if it’s out anywhere?^^
In Chain of Iron, when reflecting on what her parents might think of her marriage, Cordelia thinks, "For Sona, and no doubt Elias, this outcome had been a dream. Not only had Cordelia gotten married, but she had married into a powerful and influential family (however Elias might have felt about the Herondales)."
To me, that read as implying Elias had something against the Herondales. But I thought he was neutral and didn't have much of an opinion on them, since he was never close to them. The only interaction I can remember Elias having with a Herondale is at the end of Clockwork Princess when he tries to give Cortana to Will, who gets upset and leaves the conversation. I didn't think Elias held that against Will, though, since Tessa was there to explain that Will didn't mean to be rude and that Elias should pass Cortana on to his kids. But is this what Cordelia is referring to in Chain of Iron, or something else that I'm missing that would make Elias feel a certain way about the Herondales?
I loved Robert Sheehan as Simon, and I understand why many people appreciated Alberto Rosende. However, I’ve always imagined Simon looking like Dylan O’Brien, who has always given me Simon vibes, especially when he played Stiles Stilinski in Teen Wolf. What do you all think?
I’ve been obsessed with the book series and have read the entire Mortal Instruments, Infernal Devices and am now on the final book of the Last Hours. Decided to give the movie a shot before watching the series and…. It’s good. Don’t get me wrong there. But there’s so much wrong with it.
First off, Clary is supposed to be 16, not 18.
They don’t even have the sensor that Clary killed the ravener demon with. Jace killed the demon in the movie.
Vampires are supposed to look like normal humans whereas they look like zombies when they’re at the Hotel DuMort.
Simon got turned into a rat in the book and instead got kidnapped.
Alec and Isabelle didn’t join Clary and Jace in saving Simon, but they do in the movie.
Raphael doesn’t even exist in the movie but plays such a huge part in helping them in the book.
Clary is supposed to throw a knife at Alaric but instead stabs Luke in the face.
Somehow Bach was a shadow hunter and made music that repelled demons? (What a stupid idea).
The portal was supposed to be at Madame Dorthea’s, not the institute.
Speaking of Madame Dorothea, she shouldn’t have been a Ravener Demon. Abaddon was supposed to possess her, then Simon was supposed to help kill Abaddon with Alec’s bow. Instead he charges at her and Jace just stabs her in the chest with a Seraph blade.
Minor complaint, but Luke’s pack is supposed to be at an abandoned police station, not a body shop.
Clary doesn’t learn about her rune making powers until City of Ashes, where here she just randomly draws a rune on her hand and stops demons in their tracks.
In the book we were lead to believe they were siblings for a while, but Hodge just tells Valentine to lie to them in the movie.
Her mom was held at the institute?!!??? (WTF?!?!) and Valentine just magically steps through the institute’s portal and summons a shit ton of demons apparently. Renwick’s isn’t even a thing which is where Jocelyn is supposed to be held and the big final fight is supposed to happen.
Also Hodge was supposed to leave and Clary follows him, to where he was killed by Luke.
Also, Clary just destroys the portal by slamming a stele into it?! WTF?!
Then she just randomly has a duplicate cup made to fool Valentine.
And finally, there’s no mention of Parabatais at all in the movie! The hugest thing about Alec and Jace’s relationship. And another huge thing about Valentine and Luke too.
Like. It’s good. And conveys the idea of the book. But I can see why they didn’t make a sequel. Hopefully the series is a bit more true to the books.
I didn’t know there was a series until last month and was anyone who read the books massively disappointed with the entire first episode? It’s the furthest thing from canon and I don’t understand why.
Anyone here has any recs for me for books that the romance feels similar to the romance Cassie Clare does? I don’t know how the lady does it but the way she writes the love stories does it for me. I love the way she does yearning and the tension between characters.
I want to keep going but Clary's actress kills the entire seriousness of the show.
Just started to watch the series and I kinda like it especially Alec, but the reveal (spoilers) of Jace and Clary being siblings was a big letdown like wtf 😕 Also that Magnus is so clingy to Alec disturbs me like dude he’s not into you get it now stop and move tf on. I like Raphael though ☺️
4 years ago I got a puppy after I had just finished reading TID. I was OBSESSED to say the least, I was very into all of Cassandra’s books and I still am (currently rereading TDA because I have the English version and since it’s not my first language, it was hard for me to understand it at 15 yo). I decided to name her Tessa because she reminded me of her in a way and I wanted to keep a part of the shadowhunters universe with me in my day to day life, to feel more connected to it. I’ve been in LOVE with my Tessa ever since I got her and I’m unspeakably grateful to get to call her and be reminded of the Tessa Gray. Of course, my dog has her own personality and I have her picture in my head every time I hear her name, but it’s still nice to be reminded from time to time of the character she got named after. What annoys me is that when I tell people her name they always think I named her after Tessa from After… not really my cup of tea:)
I just got back into reading the series and I’m trying to get my hands on anything related to the Shadowhunter universe (my OCD is really kicking my ass this time around lol)
Am I correct in understanding that there’s now no way to get those books since the campaign is over? I found a pdf version of secrets of blackthorn hill on this page (thank you to the wonderful soul who uploaded a pdf version on here), but I can’t find any information about the other books. Can a kind soul explain this to me like I’m a 5 year old please lol? Are they even out there yet or still in progress of being written.
I appreciate any comment under this post! Thank you all in advance
Just Some Notes:
Christopher's actually dead... I'm actually really upset by this. I waited until the end of the book to believe it because I thought, "oh okay we have Lucie Herondale here, some weird stuff might happen and he might come back like Jesse Blackthorn... right?"
WRONG, I finished the book last night and he is very much dead, as of today I am now in grieving.
I also got thrown off because I obsessed over family trees prior to reading this book and I really thought Grace and Christopher were going to be together. Someone needs to make an updated one and explain how the heck Alec and Isabelle are alive, who they descend from.
I will say though that I like how it ended, I was sitting there cracking jokes as Cordelia was about to confront James/ Belial. Going "Let me guess, Cordelia ran... again??"
(My invisible audience that watches me when I read can confirm this.)
Ending it with "Side by side with James, Cordelia ran":
Made me feel bad about the jokes, obviously it was building to something.
Made my heart warm.
(I definitely hugged the book after)
(I need a life... lol)
Bro literally he’s just there for the whole series like he’s so cute and he’s also a nerdy dude so wtf and also he’s so supportive of clary and shit and i so get why izzy got with him cause who wouldn’t and when he became a vampire I was like GODDAMN like my 7th grade mind was like THATS HOT and I so agree with her because how did Cassie write such a good character? Why is Simon the best character? Why is he literally so hot I wish I was his bass so he could finger me also how did he summon a whole ass Angel? Like. Why is he so amazing. Why is he, like, the best character ever written in the history of literature? Also why is he just super OP and shit but he’s just there too like bro is is mundane but he’s like so amazing also he’s so loyal too because when george died and he chose his shadowhunter name he names himself after George. Like. Why is he so amazing but also so unaware that he’s amazing. how does he do it. I want Simon in my life. I love him so much. He’s so amazing. Like why can’t real boys be like him? I have to give myself schizophrenia he he can be real.
I’m rereading chain of iron and there seems to be a lot of foreshadowing that Cordelia’s necklace from James is special but didn’t it just turn out to be a normal necklace that he gifted to her because he loves her? Or am I remembering wrong?
Deciding to >! be a silent brother !< is kinda out of character ?
I only read the books once so maybe there were signs I missed. but after all the accepting of his fate, trying to live as much as possible before he died, loving his music, it seems weird to me that the whole reasoning he decided to do that was that he didn’t want to leave them behind. Even though by deciding to do that, he essentially had to leave everything he loved behind. At least that is what we are lead to believe before the Last Hours books comes out.
Not only that, but due to the yin fen in his body, he’s not even at full power.
Hi everybody! Anyone who has purchased the shadowhunters tarot cards can share a guide to them? I would love to buy them, but unfortunately I live very far away and shipping is not available. If you know where the full manual can be read freely available, I would appreciate it if you could share it. Thanks!
Not including villains
