Grab your ARC before Wednesday! Monster hunting and magic.

The Begotten and Blessed: Book 1 of the Revival of the Fall series by Stella Hope

    Blurb:

Slinging drinks, breaking up bar fights with smelly conjured trolls, spying—it’s all in a day’s work for Esme Turner.

But finding out that the bloodthirsty creatures of legend were returning wasn’t what Esme anticipated during her interrogation of a fiery-tempered leprechaun.

In over her head against the burgeoning threat, Esme faces buried secrets, a leprechaun with too many tricks, and an alluring doctor who just might be a thousand-year-old Welsh demigod.

When a man-eating pishacha captures her friends, Esme is pushed to her breaking point, awakening infernal powers and a new source of fear equal to the malevolent threat: herself.

Failure is not an option. If she can’t learn to control her inner demon, those she loves will be the next casualties amidst the surge of monsters.

For fans of mythology retold, magical societies, found family, humor, and a sprinkling of spice.

Triggers: Violence, Sex (closed door - this is an action/plot first title, but romance is a subplot), Death, and Profanity, 18+ audience

Do you want to read an ARC of a standalone UF set in Las Vegas?

    Hey there!

I'm a longtime follower of this subreddit, where I've gotten many a great reading rec.

Recently I finished writing my own Urban Fantasy novel for the first time. It's basically just a checklist of the stuff I like and want more of from our genre: (1) It's got a female MC but it's romance-free. (2) It's set in a city I don't see getting much UF love (Las Vegas!). (3) It's got a unique legal thriller angle. (4) It's a standalone story, just because I want there to be more standalones in our genre. (Why does every UF have to be, like, 10 books long?)

Anyway, I'm looking for ARC readers, if anybody's interested. You can get an ARC copy on booksprout or on booksirens — or if that's too tricky to figure out, you can DM me and I'll get you a copy personally. Due date for a review's December 6.

Here's the blurb of the book (and you can see the cover at that booksprouts link):

I dropped out of law school to help Dad survive his gambling addiction. But his demons caught up with him. Literally.

Last night he had a heart attack in front of a slot machine. Now there's a demon sitting by his hospital bed, claiming it won his soul at poker.

I'm shocked that demons are even real, but I didn't promise my dying mom I'd take care of the old man just to let him go to hell. I'm not the kind of girl to accept that.

Fortunately, I can challenge the demon in court—if I can prove the heart attack was no accident. I'll have to sleuth my way across the supernatural underbelly of Las Vegas, where souls are table stakes and losing my case could mean losing my life.

Too bad I dropped out of law school.

Ace of Demons is a high-stakes, standalone urban fantasy novel featuring demons, fae, and shifters, a seedy noir setting, and a smart heroine struggling against the odds.

    Thanks guys!

American South Urban Fantasy book series w/ female MC

EDIT: preferably novels set in the real world, 1970’s to present (prefer current era/our mundane world and not futuristic/apocalyptic settings)

Hi! First time poster. Always loved UF and November through March is when I read it the period I devour it the most (the other 7 months I gravitate mostly toward horror and thriller).

    I prefer stuff that has:

-American South, Midwest, or North West setting

    -female protagonist(s)

    -mystery elements

-small town feel, but extra points for NOLA or Savannah

-adults as target audience (real picky about my YA)

-folklore creatures (vamps, weres, fae, witches etc) and not alien/intergalactic creatures

    -PLOT BEFORE ROMANCE

-don’t mind spice that isn’t at Laurel K. Hamilton’s level, but honestly prefer minimal spice

    Series I’ve LOVED:

Charlaine Harris novels; Midnight, Sookie, Harper, Gunnie Rose

Anne Rice novels; Vampire Chronicles, Mayfair Witches, Wolf Gift

Ilona Andrews novels; Clean Sweep, Magic Bites

Faith Hunter novels; Jane Yellowrock, Soulwood

Patricia Briggs novels; Mercy Thompson, Alpha and Omega

Seanan McGuire novels; October Daye, Ghost Roads

Maggie Steifvater novels; Raven Cycle, Wolves of Mercy Falls

    Holly Black; Modern Faerie Tales

Looking for "Good Girls Go to Heaven" by Seanan McGuire

The website where this short story is supposed to be available (according to the author's official website) doesn't seem to have been updated for years and any direct links I've been able to find are dead now.

If anybody happens to have a working link or has this short story archived, please let me know. Thank you.

    • Eric Carter Series
    • Sandman Slim
    • Prof Croft
    • Junkyard Druid
    • Demon Accords
    • Daniel Faust
    • Harmony Black

I do also read traditional fantasy books as well, but my ‘to read’ list is pretty full on that genre.

Id love a horror shooter game about fighting tactical necromancers in rural America

I originally envisioned this as a F.E.A.R sequel so you’d be playing as a government agent with lethal drop kicks. Have the setting be inside of and in the forest around a mid size town in like West Virginia. Like you could have reanimated skeletons chained to an illegally converted machine gun. Make a boss section a necromancer militia group with a bunch of surplus tactical gear. Give slow zombies improvised explosives and Molotov’s, you could have them silhouetted against a full moon between the trees for a good visual sequence. A good miniboss could be a reanimated bear. I’m not sure what would be a good common undead gun wielding enemy that would fit with this theme so I’d love to hear any recommendations. Possibly have half the town taken over by the necromancers trying to take the other half with some towns people joining them and fighting along side the undead and the other half could be helping you fight them. Drones piloted by necromancers with lights to spot the player at night during an infiltration and call zombies could be a fun sequence or used in normal gameplay as like a commander for zombies where destroying it would sever the direct feed and make the zombies way less coordinated. The local police department could join the necromancers and they could be a comparatively elite infantry force or transporting small zombie hordes around in the back of MRAPs.

Shade and the Dual Hatchets of Darkness

A relatively new Urban Fantasy novel worth a read. If you like Percy Jackson, Artemis Fowl, or the Inheritance Cycle, check out Shade and the Dual Hatchets of Darkness.

Shade, a young Relicant in the mystical realm of Knarrmir, wields the Dual Hatchets of Darkness, relics passed down through his family since the reign of King Aristotle the Enchanter. In a world where ancient powers are all but forgotten, Shade's life takes a dramatic turn when he encounters Vali, a mysterious man who shares his quest to reunite the descendants of the Council of Eight.

    Books like Shadowrun

A while back I played the Shadowrun TTRPG (I think it was 5e) and I loved the setting.

Are any of the official Shadowrun novels any good?

If not, I'd love recommendations on books with a similar setting.

The only Urban Fantasy I've read is Jim Butcher's Dresden Files, but other series I've read and loved include the Cosmere, and some more grimdark titles as well.

The Courier – Urban Fantasy Adventure Concept

    https://preview.redd.it/hq0xygvtpqzd1.png?width=1792&format=png&auto=webp&s=d289e882131826e55320c543829ff5d3e2a706c3

    Hey, r/urbanfantasy!

I wanted to share an idea for a new urban fantasy story/game concept I'm working on called The Courier on our platform wyrds.ai. Imagine a sprawling metropolis, where a courier service operates for one purpose: delivering magical artifacts through hidden passages only known to a select few. This isn't your regular delivery job. Think midnight subway lines, rooftop bridges under the full moon, and eerie, silent alleys—all concealed from the everyday city-dwellers.

    • Premise: You're a new recruit in this mystical courier service, learning about the city's enchanted pathways and facing dangerous clients with secrets of their own. With each delivery, you encounter magical and often treacherous obstacles. Here’s a sneak peek into some of the challenges:
    • Initiation by Midnight Subway: Your first mission is guided by a veteran courier, Marcel LeRoux. He takes you to an ancient subway line that only appears at midnight. "The city will test you tonight," he warns, "don’t look back, no matter what you hear." As you step aboard, whispers echo around you, like ghosts from travelers long gone.

What do you think? Would you take the leap as a courier in a city brimming with magical secrets? And what kind of artifacts would you like to see transported (or smuggled!) in a story like this? Would love to hear your thoughts!

    Best couple in UF?

Who is your favorite couple in Urban Fantasy?

Any chance it’s a slow burn from a series? Maybe books written in Dual POV?

Bonus points for newer works, esp. since 2020.

New Audiobook Release! - My Boss is the Devil

    Hey folks,

I just wanted to share my excitement that my audiobook for my novel, My Boss is the Devil, is now available. It's "read by the author" (me!) and self produced. If there are any other authors here interested in chatting about the process, I'm happy to discuss!

    https://www.audible.com/pd/B0DLR6Q274/?source_code=AUDFPWS0223189MWT-BK-ACX0-419879&ref=acx_bty_BK_ACX0_419879_rh_us

Books 2 and 3 will be in the works, though they're available now in other formats.

    The blurb:

Finding the balance between good and evil is about to require a lot of coffee.

What’s better than being a college dropout twenty-something working as a barista in New Haven, CT? Just about anything.

Nick would give anything to escape the dead-end life he’s made for himself. He gets the offer of a lifetime from Lucifer himself, to trade his apron for a suit. Should he really consider becoming an agent of the Devil? With the way things are going for Nick, of course he should.

Lucifer wants to give Nick a chance to do what he always wanted, to help people, wielding power and influence to make their dreams come true. He would have to sell his soul, but the Devil is a gambling man and lets Nick experience his new life before he has to sign on the dotted line. Can he use the Devil’s power for good, and make his mark on the world, or will he fall victim to his own desires and lose his humanity?

As if that wasn’t enough, the very friend that made the meeting with Lucifer possible turns on Nick, and he needs to do some quick thinking to come out on top. Maybe the ends justify the means, but there are no easy answers.

    Urban Fantasy Meets Hallmark Movies

Over the weekend I helped the LadyWife decorate for christmas (we have a couple of busy months lined up and this was the one weekend we could dedicate to it). The tradition is decorating while watching Hallmark Christmas movies. Now, after binging three saccharine sweet movies back to back, I thought it would be hilarious to reimagine some iconic UF series with Hallmark movie plots. So whatcha got? Dresden learning to love christmas at the hands of a small town school teacher? Mercy running into some hidden prince and teaming up to save the town christmas festival?

The Book of Hastur (Books of Cthulhu #7) is available on Audible

    https://preview.redd.it/gqpmug28yqsd1.jpg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a038ea7aace5d05ff58c832a7865065cec4d7330

    Hey folks,

For those who are fans of the pulp horror anthology series, BOOKS OF CTHULHU, do I have good news for you! The BOOK OF HASTUR is now available for Kindle, Audible, and paperback. This is the seventh book of the series and, as the title indicates, is all about the King in Yellow and his many manifestations.

A bunch of short stories and novellas that will make you say HASTUR, HASTUR, HAST--

“Have you seen the Yellow Sign?”

Hastur was not a creation of H.P. Lovecraft but an adaptation of concepts created by Ambrose Bierce and Robert W. Chambers.

Nevertheless, Hastur, AKA The King in Yellow, has since gone on to become one of the most iconic Great Old Ones. Whether the mysterious Lord of Leng in the Dreamlands or Cthulhu’s alleged half-brother, he is a figure who haunts the dreams of those mortals who touch upon even the barest knowledge of his existence.

THE BOOK OF HASTUR is a collection of short stories and novellas depicting Hastur’s influence over a variety of individuals as well as those individuals affected by his presence. Some of them are horror, some of them are Pulp adventure, and some are a mixture of the two.

    Various Blue Moon Investigation series

    Greetings,

On Goodreads, I've seen various Blue Moon series by different authors: Steve Higgs, Barry Napier, Alex Gates so far. Higgs is listed as co-author of the first books in both Napier's and Gates's series so I'm guessing they took his idea and ran with it with his blessing.

Is there any kind of continuity between the series and so a Blue Moon universe with its chronology and suggested order of books or should I treat them as separate series and read them as such?

    Thanks for you help.

    Immortal Vices and Virtues Series

I’m working thru the immortal vices and virtues series. Each book in the series is a different author. However, for the life of me, I cannot find the 9th book Slay Me by Jessica Wayne in any version besides audible. I prefer to read with my eyes. I cannot figure out why this book has gone MIA. Her website (per Amazon) and Facebook are also missing. Does anyone know what’s going on?
