This is a subreddit for fans of older anime and manga. It doesn't matter if you're a classic Toonami kid, a Usenet hero, or someone simply interested in the history of anime, everyone is welcome here. The focus should be on series and titles that were broadcast, or published before 2000, where older fans can gather and discuss the Usenet/BBS days, old school conventions, fan clubs, or whatever, and new fans can ask about those days as well as discussing anime itself.
Welcome to Retro Anime, the place to talk about classic anime and manga of the 90s, 80s, or even older. It doesn't matter if you're a Toonami kid, a Usenet hero, or someone simply interested in the history of anime, all kinds are welcome here.
Quick Rules - PLEASE READ!
Keep links, content, and discussions related to anime and manga series broadcasted or published before 2000.
Fan works are acceptable, so feel free to link to your fan art, fan fiction, cosplay, memes, wallpapers, AMVs, reviews, etc.
Regarding piracy: Do not post any links for illegal streams or downloads of any of the series that are legally available. Check the The Library first, if you're not sure. For series that are provably more difficult to access, do not submit it as a link, but instead make a self-post and link it in the text. Read a fuller version of the rules over in the wiki.
Asking for suggestions or making lists that could include newer and older anime mixed together is fine.
Feel free to link to episodes or sales on websites like Hulu, Crunchyroll, RightStuf, Discotek, Amazon, etc. For YouTube videos, make sure that it is from an official YouTube channel.
NSFW needs to be tagged, as this is a SFW subreddit. No pornographic material is allowed; take it to /r/hentai or other relevant subreddits.
The CSS of this subreddit is still a work in progress, if you find something broken, please let us know.

Does anyone else maintain a list of anime from this era? I'd be so keen to see them. I keep one going on Letterboxd. A lot of the newer additions have come from here. Thanks, pals. Let's see even moooorrre
Hi im new here and would like some help identifying an old anime, here what I can remember a high school girl who did archery is gifted with a jewel ( very similar to the ones in Blue Seed ) that grants her power to kill monsters that are hell bent on destroying the planet, the government is involved and so is someone I think is her crush. The dvd was gift from a friend but my roommate stole it a bunch of other stuff when I was in the hospital, I've tried multiple times to find it so any help would be awesome
Here’s the updated translation with your addition:
There is one cartoon that left a mark on my psyche and memory. I had a DVD with cartoons from the “Gora Samotsvetov” studio on one side, and a collection of strange cartoons on the other. One of them I remember well, including the music and approximate animation style. I still dream of finding it and watching it again. It was very strange. It started with a pink elephant, and then the camera zoomed in on its small, bristly head. The shot got closer and eventually showed a louse/bug biting its scalp. The elephant starts scratching, and with each new bite, it becomes more intense, and it hits itself on the head. As the lice multiply with each bite, the elephant changes color from pink to blue, then purple, and finally green, and you can see that it is in distress. The animation style was odd, flat, with vibrant colors, but not 3D or deep. This cartoon reminded me in style of “FRU-79.” I’m really hoping to find this cartoon because I’m very curious about it.
Some of you may have heard of (or remember) It's Garry Shandling's Show. 80s American sitcom, incredibly meta in the way Garry talked to the audience and used the TV studio itself as part of the set. Way ahead of its time. The theme tune is a song about how the guy is singing the theme tune, with lyrics focusing on how much of the song he's sung so far. I saw repeats of it in the 90s as a young teenager, and I absolutely loved it. Easily one of my favourite shows when I was younger, and probably still today.
Anyway: last night, watching the special features on the Project A-Ko blu-ray (which, by the way, are worth the purchase alone, let alone the ridiculously high effort they put into the remaster), I'm reminded that the entire soundtrack was made by two people, Richie Zito and Joey Carbone. I saw these names on the credits back in the day, but they weren't names I recognised.
It turns out that Joey is now prolific in the J-Pop industry. He's produced over 1,000 songs, including for Smap and Arashi. That in itself is pretty interesting, but it doesn't end there.
Before he started working in Japan, in his early days based in the USA... he composed the theme tune to It's Garry Shandling's show.
What an unexpected way for two separate worlds to collide!!
I know Prime has a lot, and I've been watching a lot of anime on there. I found this app on it called Retrocrush, which seems pretty cool for old anime. I watched a lot of anime as a kid, but I'm fairly new to streaming it now, which is probably obvious. Where do you guys watch it? Any suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks.
Which character is your favorite?
I was born in the Philippines and in my childhood, I have seen animes that were dubbed in English that were only available in my country or only within Southeast Asia.
Yaiba: The Legend of the Master Swordsman - the early anime of Gosho Aoyama before he made Detective Conan. I watched it on Skycable in the 90s, English dubbed, and it would come out in the afternoons during school days, so this was my afterschool show. If you try looking for this online, it's only available subbed. Oh I just found out that this is getting a remake, I'm so excited, I hope this one gets an English dub.
Cyborg Kurochan - in the 2000s, Animax Asia debuted on Skycable and one of the first animes I've seen was Cyborg Kurochan, dubbed in English and very funny, I finished the entire show and have fond memories of this. Like Yaiba, if you look for this online, you'll only find the subbed version.
Yu-Gi-Oh! - the English dub I've seen of this in the 90s aired on RPN-9 and it was vastly different from the 4Kids dubbed version. This was the Singaporean-English dub, much better in my opinion than the 4Kids version because it follows the original script and uses the original Japanese intros and music.
Digimon Adventure, Digimon 0-2, Digimon Tamers, Digimon Frontier - just like Yu-Gi-Oh, the dub of this I've seen is vastly different from the 4Kids Fox Kids version since it uses the original scripts, intros and music. This is the dub shown on Cartoon Network Asia and is known online as the Filipino-English dub, as in, it's Filipino voice actors speaking English, and it's very good, and Digimon Tamers was the best dub.
Ghosts at School - I've seen this anime on Animax Asia and it was dubbed in English by Animax. Unlike the English dub released years later in America, this dub isn't a abridged or parody dub, it was a serious dub, it used the original scripts, intros and music, very creepy since it introduced me to Japanese folklore, ghosts and demons.
Cooking Master Boy - I've seen this English dubbed on AXN and I have fond memories of this, the story and the cooking battles were amazing. Like the earlier dubs I've mentioned, if you try looking for this online, it's only available subbed.
Grander Musashi - another anime I've seen English dubbed on AXN that I have fond memories of, very good anime about kids going fishing, learning fishing techniques and competing in fishing competitions. If you look for this online, you'll only find the subbed version.
Detective School Q - I've seen this on Animax Asia, dubbed in English. Very good detective, murder mystery anime very similar to Detective Conan. Again, if you try looking for this online, you'll only find the subbed version.
