My film mix is a little short of the target loudness

    Hello there,

I am nearly done mixing a feature film in 5.1 and have a little doubt regarding the target loudness. I'm well versed with most of the technical details regarding the mixing process, but this is my first feature film that might end up on Netflix.

So, as per Netflix spec, the integrated loudness should be -27 LUFS measured over the entire programme. My mix is hitting an integrated of -28.1 LUFS. It's a social drama kind of film, and it's all comprised of dialogue, and there's a long gaps between each dialogue.

If I try and increase the loudness of one of the acts in the film, that act sounds way to loud compared to the other acts. I mixed the first few lines of the film keeping in mind the target level and have kept that as my anchor point. But doing that causes my mix to be just short of the target loudness.

What are the ways in which I can fix this? Any help would be appreciated.

Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on any details.

    Thanks!

    -9173 Errors out of nowhere

Hi everyone, I have a decent windows computer, albeit pretty old. i7 with heaps of RAM (32 GB). I have been able to run decent sessions for years 20-30 tracks loaded with plug ins (waves, helix, bias) and virtual instruments (native instruments kontakt, reason, Roland), using a RME UFXii at 128 sample buffer at 24bit 48khz. Running windows 10.

    Running pro tools 2020.3

Out of the blue I am getting repeated -9173 errors, even with a high buffer size. It will play on for about 4 seconds and then bang.

There were no significant program changes.

    My questions are:

    1. is there a way/techniques to diagnose what is actually causing it?

    2. is there a way to see if it's hardware related?

    3. would a clean install of windows be worth the massive amount of hassle?

The key to this issue is that the sessions ran fine until about 4 weeks ago. So increasing the buffer is not a fix.

Changing Key of Samples? Vocals? Plugin?

I am looking for advice on the best way to change the key of a sample (vocals/and non vocals)) in ProTools? I know I can use the Polyphonic Elastic Audio or Pitch II but was wondering if there's other plugins that I can just type in the key and it will switch the sample to that key.

Is Auto-Tune good for this or is that just vocals? When it comes to Auto-Tune is there a way to have it just change the key without giving that Auto-Tune sound?

    Also looking at this https://www.zynaptiq.com/pitchmap/

And I have Serato Pitch 'n' Time - thinking that could be good too?

    Thanks!

Can't edit or select MIDI notes

    Hi Pro Toolers,

Within 10 minutes of opening a session, I can't grab or move MIDI notes. The issue seems to happen with Kontakt using V7 or V6. Issue persists under both Rosetta and Silicon Native sessions. Have tried many of the suggestions over at the DUC to no avail. FWIW I've been using PT since 1999 and this is a new bug as far as I can tell.

The only solution I've found is to either create a new MIDI instrument channel or reboot. But this only buys me 10 minutes so it's not a real solution.

System: PT Artist version 2024.3, Apple M2 Pro, 32 GB, Apollo x6

Just figured out how to remove radio noise and felt like sharing

Literally just figured out that Isotope rx voice de-noise can remove radio noise from a guitar audio (or audio in general) with minimal quality loss. crank the threshold and reduction to near max and don’t over do the reduction, take it off adaptive then click learn on the spot with the noise then unclick learn and adjust the eq filter to taste. It typically looks like a larger reduction in the 1k below section with it slightly less above that but besure you raise it enough to get out radio noise in particular. Edit: I notice that it usually takes off to much so as a whole reduce the eq points then find which one’s (or one) make the most difference in the reduction of the undesired sound.

My Plugins Really Won’t Show Up

Windows 10 So I’ve been able to add my waves plugins and a few others, but a decent chunk of my other plugins(that are in the avid folder) don’t load. They show up when pro tools is loading and sorting files but when I actually open a project they don’t come up on the list. I’ve trashed my preference file in app data and I’ve also tried to turn read only off. Read only always gets turned back on(even though I have full control) , but even the ones that show up are in read only folders so I don’t even think that’s the case. Man I’m just tryna mix and master this project so please help y’all 😩

    8 channel circle setup panning

    Hi,

anybody has experience with using ProTools for an 8 channel equal speaker circle and panning for this system? For example Ableton has Surround Panner and Reaper has ReaSurround. Any alternatives for this in PT? I only found the panner working on the "standard" 5.1, 7.1 setups.

Aux I/o issues in PT Ultimate/Monterey

    Hey!
For about a year I've been using PT Ultimate and doing VO sessions where I would route a Teams call in/out of Pro Tools. The VO talent would be in the booth and could hear direction via Teams, the people could hear the talent in real time with the studio mic being used as the mic input in Teams etc. I had my Mac Output routed to AUX I/o, too. so I could stream music through my Matrix HDX

recently its become really glitchy. To the point where I can't even isolate the issue to begin trouble shooting further. I have since stopped taking remote work (via teams) for this reason. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to start looking.

Been away a long time and have a couple questions regarding PT10

    Hey guys,

Last time I used Pro tools was in 2012 with version 10 and I cannot find my ilok currently. Now on to the questions.

    1. Can I transfer my pt10 license to a new ilok easy?

    2. Can I still upgrade to 11 from 10 free? (If not, what are my options?)

    3. Does PT11 work with windows 10? (I know it’s not supported but I have seen a few working?)

    4. Is it more worth it to go with annual subscription? Tbh I’m not a huge fan of the idea.

I do not have the option of rolling back, but I do also have 2020 iMac if any of the compatibility works better that way. Really only as a last resort.

    Thanks for the help!

Audio editors, how many of you use cloud projects?

I’m part of a small studio, we mainly work on movies and TV series, sound design, dialogue editing, mixing.

We often have some problems when exchanging projects, as we usually work in different places and sometimes end up with many different save copy in and it can get difficult to remember which one is the most recent etc.

We thought of using cloud to tackle this sort of confusion issue. How many of you use it? Do you think it would be useful in our case?

    Thanks!

    EdiLoad doesn't maintain original fades

Is it possible to maintain original fades between clips that are in the AAF files? I managed to relink all dialogue audio files and get a Pro Tools session, but all fades are not there anymore.

Restricting automation to a narrow range

Not sure if this is an option in any other DAWs but I would find it really useful if there was a way to essentially ‘zoom in’ automation tracks to a narrower set of values than the default 0-100%.

For example, instead of automating the filter cuttoff of a synth from 0-100%, i could have an option to restrict the automation to go from 0-20%.

Most of the time I don’t find myself using the vast majority of the range, and it would be nice to get better resolution so that I don’t have to make the automation track huge in order to make fine adjustments of the maybe 10% range which I’m actually using.

In some plugins I can do this by setting the range of a macro control, but it would be really nice if there was a way to do this for every plugin.

Probably not on avid’s ist of priorities but just a thought!

Pro Tools Intro on MAC not working with M-Audio M-Track Solo

    Hi all,

This question has been asked before but, as far as I can see, not answered.

I bought a friend an M-Audio M-Track Solo audio interface. He hasn’t used one before, or a DAW, so I was helping him set it up over the weekend.

The problem is Pro Tools Intro will not recognise the M-Audio M-Track Solo on a iMac 27” with 3.3 GHz Quad Core i5, 8GB RAM, Radeon R9 M395 2GB graphics, running Mojave 10.14 OS.

This Mac has standard USB type A inputs on the back so the M-Audio M-Track unit plugs straight in.

The iMac OS sees the unit as an ASIO AUDIO CODEC IN and OUT and shows, and is selected in the ENGINE setting.

It will work okay with other software, watching a YouTube video for instance, we can hear the output through the M-Audio interface. But when we open Pro Tools Intro and go to the I/O settings it doesn’t show as an input device, the table is empty.

We’ve tried disconnecting and reconnecting the interface. We’ve tried saving a session and reopening it.

We then tried it on a MacBook Pro 2.9 GHz Quad core i7, Intel HD Graphics 630 1536MB, 16GB RAM running Ventura 13.6.3

This only has thunderbolt inputs, so we had to use a USB A to Thunderbolt adaptor. The Mac Book sees the M-Audio interface in the OS as an ASIO AUDIO CODEC as before, but the same thing happens in Pro Tools Intro – It doesn’t show as input device under I/O. The AUDIO CODEC is selected in the ENGINE setting.

We then tried GarageBand and everything worked fine. Input and output. So, the problem seems to be with Pro Tools Intro on Mac, not the Mac itself or the Audio interface.

I also tried the interface on my Windows 10 laptop also running Pro Tools Intro and that also worked fine.

Can anyone suggest why this isn't working?

    THANKS!

How to make markers go on top of clips?

When I recently updated pro tools to a new version, I noticed some UI changes, one of them makes the markers go behind clips in the tracks.

How to revert this effect and make the markers lay ontop of the clips again, so that they are visible.

My main workflow is referencing these markers, but now it is extra work to be able to see where they line up.

    Cheers

From Pro Tools 12 HD to 2024 Ultimate

Finally let go of my 2012 Mac Pro and installed 2024 Ultimate on a new machine.

I had been running Pro Tools 12 HD. Was honestly quite happy in 12 but unrelated software and hardware issues forced my hand.

Any of you have advice on which new features I should read up on first? Anything that’s going to blow me away? I’m pretty sure I’ve missed some big developments over the years.

    I do mainly post work.

How do I split a midi note with the mouse cursor (not playback cursor)

How do I simply click a midi note in the middle where I want to split it? There must be some split key command? As of right now, I have to select the note, place the playback cursor on the note, and then right click to then select the option to split it.

    Crackling on varispeed playback

Hey all, thank you for your time. I just recorded some dialogue and I made a mistake. Apparently there’s a shortcut to record at half speed. Now that I have taken that audio and used varispeed to make it sound like normal speed, there are occasional crackles in the dialogue. Is there a better way to solve this? Please let me know thank you.

Hello - Question about Pro Tools interface

Hello - I used Pro Tools on a Mac when I was still in college, then I got the program myself on my Windows computer and noticed these ugly old window bars around the windows. Is this because I am on Pro Tools intro? Or is there some way to fix this? Usually it doesn't have it.

And I'm talking about the windows bars right below File, Edit, View, etc. Thanks!

I'm trying to install it on my 2022 mac and after installing when trying to open the application it crashes and won't open.

Anyone had the same issue and solved it? Is this version not supported on my computer? do you know of a specific version of 11 that will work for me?

Best Pro Tools Keyboard for a Newbie

Hey guys! Just realized watching a Pro Tools YouTube video that folks have a Pro Tools Keyboard for their DAW.

So, is there a recommendation for the more reliable and shortcut functional wireless KB with backlit keys?

    Any to stay away from?

EDIT: Forgot to mention my DAW is a Windows 11 PC. 😬

Anyone else finding 2024.3.1 way less stable than 2023.9?

On M1 Mac Ventura 13.6.6, which the compatibility chart claims 2024.3.1 is stable with, but I'm having frequent crashes and system hangs when adding plugins. Didn't have any of these issues, at least not so frequent, on 2023.9. It's a real shame because I'd like to use the new features, but it's way too buggy and inconsistent to use in any sort of professional setting. Any advice or insight is appreciated!
